Small Scale Wind Projects

A study carried out by the Energy Saving Trust (EST) has suggested that more than 800,000 UK homes could be
powered by clean electricity.

In total 3.1% of the UK’s energy demand from homes could be supplied by small scale wind projects in domestic
projects.

It has identified that there are 450,000 suitable locations to site turbines across the UK. The report however has
advised that houses in dense urban areas are poor sites for turbines.

In order for the UK to cut its carbon emissions by 80% by 2050 it has to source 15% of its energy from renewable
sources like wind turbines.
currently around a quarter of the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions are produced by energy use in the home. The
government is keen to reduce this figure by improving energy efficiency within homes.

The study carried out by the EST is the first of its kind. For a year turbines from 500W to 6kW were monitored in
57 different urban and rural locations around the UK.

Exposed sites in rural Scotland gave the best results. These were from pole mounted turbines which had clean air
and unobstructed air flow. These site generated in excess of 18,000 kWh and saving 7,500kg of carbon dioxide a year.

New Feed in Tariffs for Small Wind Turbines

The Low Carbon transition plan announced by the government states that by 2020 almost half of the electricity used in the UK will be from low carbon sources, 30% from renewable sources such as wind, water and solar power and the remainder from Nuclear and Clean coal. The aim from the government is to try to eliminate all carbon emission by 2050.

Currently in the UK only 2.5% of electricity comes from renewable sources. There are proposals for 4000 new onshore wind turbines and 3000 offshore.

The government will be investing £11.2million into regional and local authorities to help speed up planning decisions on renewable and low carbon energy applications.

A new feed in tariff is also being planned. The key points of this being:

• 36.5p per kWh for small Solar photovoltaic systems up to 4kW and 28p per kWh for systems up to 10kW

• 23.0p per kWh for small wind turbines between 1.5kW and 15kW

• it will replace the current ROC system which pays 10p per kWh

• Effective as of 1st April 2010, although all systems commissioned from now on will qualify

• Systems installed from now until April 2010 will be eligible for both LCBP grants and the new tariff.

A 3kW home solar photovoltaic system that is generating 2,300kWh per year should earn roughly £1000 per year. This is £600 more than it would previously earn therefore reducing payback times.

The Evance Iskra R9000 wind turbine should earn £2,000 - £3,000 per year. This is an increase of £1,000 per year.

The Gaia-Wind 133-11kW turbine can earn £6,000 - £9,000 per year if it is installed on a moderately windy site. This is an increase of £3,000. This will reduce the payback period to below 5 years.

Gaia Wind turbine delivers outstanding NREL test results

The US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has released the interim results of their Independent Testing Program for Small Wind Turbines that began last year.  The results were presented by Amy Bowen, NREL Electrical Test Engineer, during WindPower 2009 in Chicago.  Four small wind turbines, including the Gaia-Wind 133-11kW, participated in this program conducted at the National Wind Technology Center (NWTC) in Boulder, CO.  The site is accredited by the American Association of Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA) to conduct power performance, power quality, noise, safety and function, and duration tests to International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards.

Three of the five tests have been completed to date: safety and function, duration and power performance.  The Gaia-Wind turbine met the pass requirements for all tests.  Moreover, in terms of estimated annual power production, it outperformed its nearest comparable peer by a factor of 2 to 1.  This result further validates the value proposition that Gaia-Wind is the ‘best performing small wind turbine in low to moderate wind speeds’.

Edinburgh School win top energy award

Currie High School in Edinburgh has won a nationwide top energy award and was the only entry from Scotland that
was recognised at the Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy 2009.

The awards were hosted by Prince Charles on 11th June. Currie High school won the Schools award category.

The school has been reducing their energy use over the past 10 years by installing a solar thermal system and a Gaia-Wind
11kW wind turbine. Pupils at the school are also learning about sustainable energy.

Other ways the school has been reducing their energy use have been to upgrade over 2000 lights to low energy use designs, all
doors have been replaced to try and help prevent heat loss and they have also had all of the windows re-sealed. The Schools
swimming pool is heated by solar thermal panels and the boiler is now switched off for several months of the year.
