Took a look at my site and noticed I hadn’t posted anything in pert near 2 months. Saw that I’ve only tweeted about twice in the past month, too. Busy guy. Or has it lost some of it’s luster?

I did land a new job, started on July 31. And I absolutely love it so far. Great group of people with a very solid product. The company is Virid, and we build eCommerce sites on a platform they developed. It’s a much better atmosphere for me, and for once they found me through Dice.com. I can’t tell you how many countless searches I did on there while my resume was posted and searchable, but it finally paid off. I missed the eCommerce game, it’s like, I guess, building sites that actually mean something. Not just brochure sites, and not those awful data-driven-number-crunching-web applications some schmuck is forced to sit down and wade through every day. I’m thrilled to be back, and I hope I can stay excited about it. Being in the position I’m in, not working for an online retailer, I have the bonus of not having to concern myself with online marketing, which really isn’t my thing and drove me away before. Seems like I found a great fit for me personally and professionally, I hope it lasts a long time!

I love web development. I like using new technologies, especially when it makes my job go more smoothly and produces better looking and functioning web sites. I did a little test of CSS3, just to see what all the buzz was about. Overall, I like where it’s headed, but it’s not ready for prime time yet. I will be happy when it is! Most of my observations are written up on the page, so check it out. Feel free to comment here and let me know your thoughts. Are you using it yet? Why or why not?

I caught a hawg! I love fishing top water, and I’m fortunate that my parents have a nice pond with lots of vegetation and fish in it. Everything came together on 6/13 for this pig to get hauled in. I didn’t have a scale, and I didn’t measure it, but I’m guessing it’s in the 6-7 pound range and about 22 inches. She was really long, but not too thick since it’s after the spawn. Cocoa the dog was not harmed in the fishing expedition, but she loves to get a close up look when a fish is landed.

I caught this puppy on my favorite lure – the Scum Frog. I caught it on the color shown here, but I’m convinced the bass don’t care what color it is. I’ve caught keepers on chartruese, black, orange, green, and the white. I’m not saying you should go out and buy one, but I’m saying they catch fish. They’re totally weedless (as close to “totally” as possible), so I like to drag them across the pads kinda slow, then let it stop when I hit an opening. It’s fun to see the 12-14 inch bass come up and whack it, but the real beauty is when a big one takes it. It’s a slurp and a swirl. Count: 1-one-thousand, 2-one-thousand; then BLAM-O set the hook. Good times, good times.

I love tweaking stuff, playing with it, tinkering. Not “real” stuff that you can touch and feel, like car engines or mechanical things, but stuff on the computer. More specifically stuff involving the interwebs. So when I discovered Firefox Personas, I was thrilled. If you haven’t tried it give it a whirl!

Of course, I had to make my own, just to see what it took, and I think I did a bang-up job. It’s really just a matter of creating two images, specifying a text color, and specifying a “highlight” color, so I plan to release more. I love the idea, but I’m really disappointed in the execution of the page – it needs a lot of help with organization. I’d love to be able to search/sort by color(s), better defined categories, and even release date could be useful. That being said, they did a great job, and knowing Mozilla it will continue to improve. Let me know what you think of it, and keep an eye out for more (maybe starring Buford the Bass from the footer below…)

I’m trying to build a network. A group of people I like to follow online. People I trust and respect. People I would want to work with one day. I want to have meaningful dialog with people, across lots of web sites. I read some ungodly number of blogs daily. I contribute via the comments when I think I can help. And now that’s frustrating me.

It’s impossible for me to remember from day to day where I have left comments. Why don’t more people have the option to subscribe to a feed of comments on a post? How did this become not a best practice? Am I the only one frustrated? I use Netvibes religiously, I even have a tab dedicated to comments feeds where I have posted. I just don’t understand why that tab always has to be empty. It’s easy to implement, why don’t people do it?

I want people to interact with me on this blog. If some one makes a comment, and asks a question, I want to answer it. If they bring up an interesting point, I want to reply to it. I need to keep the conversation going. Without having a feed for the comments, how does dialog occur? Can every other blog reader really remember where they’ve left comments and just check in every few hours or days?

What do you do when they don’t have a feed? How do you remember to check back in on posts where you’ve commented? Leave a comment, help me out!

I didn’t think this up myself, but I just learned it, and it seems terrifically useful. I run into this problem regularly: I have a containing element (div usually) with a few floating elements inside of it. I like to use this technique when splitting an element in half – a left half and a right half. I’ll float the left half to the left, give it a width that’s a little less than half of the outer container, float the right half to the right with the same width.

“Great,” I think to myself. Let’s ctrl+s then refresh the browser to check this pig out. Then there’s the problem…

If you’ve done something along these lines you’ve seen this mess before:

YIKES! My belly is hanging out of the bottom of my shirt! The container doesn’t expand to contain the inner floated elements. Here’s the simple solution: float the container element. Why didn’t I think of that?

Here’s what the solution looks like:

Seems too easy? Check out the working demo here. Many thanks to Steve Smith for his post documenting the technique.

My 3rd child, first daughter, was born 4/14 and mom and baby are happy and healthy. I was thrilled with having 2 boys, but wife really wanted to have a girl, so we tried one last time and got lucky. She’s a beautiful baby, and the tiniest little thing you ever saw; I’ve caught bass as big as she is!

The way it has worked out, my wife is “in charge” of the baby, and I get to handle the boys. They’re good kids, and it’s not too bad, but it’s certainly taking up a lot of my time. Or all of it. We got the boys a wii to try to appease them, but they’re a little too young to handle it on their own, so daddy gets paged frequently for help. They do love it and they are thankful, so that makes me feel good as a parent.

Not sure who she looks like yet, but at times she looks like both of her brothers. I’m sure I’m jinxing this, but so far she’s a good sleeper. She doesn’t have a standard sleep schedule yet, but she does sleep a few solid hours at a time.

Returning to work this week, hopefully that will get me back close to a regular schedule, and posting more here!

I’ve been uninspired by the traditional blog interface, and I have been meaning to check out a desktop blogging unit. Today, by forces in the universe, Tweetdeck passed me a good link. Based on the advice of a tweep, I downloaded and installed BlogDesk. So far, it’s been straightforward and easy to use.

Downloading and installing was totally easy, as expected: go to the site, click download, run the installer, hooray.

Setting up the connection to my blog – again very straightforward. It was a little tricky to figure out how to add the blog at first – but I just right clicked on the right side of the interface and selected “Create new blog”.

I really dig the way BlogDesk fetched my already existing categories. Would have loved to see it fetch tags, I don’t see any place for me to enter tags for this post?

It’s not intuitive at all how to get the “read the rest of this article” break/link. I added it in the source of this post, we’ll see how that goes…

The editor seems decent so far, very uncluttered and streamlined, I like that.

Here goes adding a picture to the post…

<del>That was pretty cool, lots of fun options of things to do with the image, we’ll see how it looks in the post…</del>

OK, adding the border wasn’t a great idea, it made the background white which didn’t work for me. We’ll try again without adding a border…

Saving is easy, and publishing looks like just the click of a button.

That concludes my first trial run, so “Hello, world!” Let’s check this thing out on the site…

Editing an existing post was not much fun at all from a total n00b perspective. It wasn’t too harsh because I am comfortable with the “view source” mode, but I could see it being intimidating for people that are just bloggers and not developers. All in all I’d say the BlogDesk is pretty decent, I will try to continue using it and hone my skills with it.
