Picture: MELVYN KNIPE

Futsal is a great sport because it is much faster than outdoor soccer, Rachel Watters says.

Playing for the Penrith-based West City Crusaders in the NSW Futsal Super League, Rachel, 14, of Londonderry, has progressed in leaps and bounds over the past year.

The latest Penrith Press Junior Sports Star nominee had an impressive 2009-10 season.

With a keen eye for goal, Rachel was asked to represent NSW in the Vikings national youth competition.

“My coach Craig Latham at the West City Crusaders took a few girls to the Vikings tournament in January at Windsor,” she said.

“I was 13 then and it was a ladies’ youth competition and we won against Victoria which was great.”

Rachel’s impressive displays led to her being invited to represent NSW for the Vikings national women’s tournament at Carrara on the Gold Coast last month.

“It was a shock to be selected in an open women’s team,” she said.

“I was scared and nervous playing against the older girls but I did enjoy the challenge. They had a lot more experience than me, so I thought their style of play was something I wasn’t used to.

“I got to score two goals in an 11-11 draw against a team with predominantly Australian players, which I was happy with.”

Rachel is now aiming to continue her journey to the top of futsal competitions.

But the Nepean High School student is aware she must take one step at a time.

“I’m aiming to continue playing for the West City Crusaders and want to learn new things in the game,” she said.

“One of my main priorities is to get faster, with and without the ball.”

* The Junior Sports Star program’s major sponsor is Rebel Sport and the Press’s local sponsor is Monkey Mania.

All Stars and Wunderslogs contested the women’s grand final, All Stars winning six to two. All Stars goal scorers for were Steph O’Brien (three), Tegan Young (two) and Karmel Parsons; Becky Whittaker kicked both goals for Wunderslogs. Tegan Young was best on court and won the best and fairest award.

The eagerly-awaited men’s grand final did not disappoint and a hard and fast game between Grumpy Old Men and Phoenix had scores at three-all at the full-time siren. This necessitated playing extra time under the “golden goal” rule, meaning the first side to kick a goal is the winner. At the 12 second mark of extra time, Grumpy Old Men’s Eric Adams kicked a goal, causing his team to erupt in excitement! Dillan Wallace from Warooka Strikers was named as best and fairest for the season in the men’s competition.

The grand final night capped off a successful season for YP Futsal, with the club also retaining the country shield after winning against Jamestown in the carnival in all divisions.

The coaches with their certificates

Four local coaches last Friday graduated with level zero futsal coaching certificates.

The certificates were presented to the coaches by Victor Wai’ia at the multipurpose hall.

The one day course basically taught the participants the much needed basics of futsal coaching.

Wai’ia said it was important that local coaches undergo such training because it would help them with the basics in futsal.

One of the participants told star sport last week that the one day course really helped broaden his understanding of futsal and it also gave him more knowledge of the game itself.

Meanwhile, Wai’ia said there will be another course coming up soon and that is the level one course.

The level one course can only be conducted by other Oceania Futsal Referees.

Wai’ia said he will try and arrange a date to continue with the level one course with the Oceania Futsal Federation.

The 8th part of the NSW Premier League Preview features the Under 12 Girls

The under 12 girls competition should be a head to head tussle between the Mascot Vipers and the Sydney City Eagles for the Premiership.

The Vipers under the leadership of Zvi Ben David will have Carla Trimboli leading the way whilst the signing of Georgia Plessas from Benfica will make for a deadly 1-2 combination add to that duo Emma Garlick who is now entering her 3rd season in the age group and that should see the Vipers in one of the top 2 positions.

The Eagles shouldn’t have any problems securing the other.

Danny Digiandomenico and the experienced Dave Saliba have the reigns of a team filled with talent. Led by Princess Ibini Isei, Danielle Francis and the tenacious Kaitlyn Saliba.

The Campbelltown City Quake shouldn’t be discounted though.

The youngest quake side won the double last season and all but 4 players have remained.

Led by goal scoring machine Laura Featherstone and goal keeper Melati Abdullah the youngest Quake Girls could trouble the top 2.

The last semi final position is a toss of the coin.

Newly promoted Enfield Rovers seem to be the best of the rest and shouldn’t be underestimated.

Shannon Thompson, Kathy Stavrakas and Sarah Urquhart remain from last seasons Super league Premiership winning team and could see the Rovers take that last semi final position.

The Inner West Allstars also fancy their chances to make the 4 with Angelique Dimitrakas and Georgia Koutzoumis leading their assault on the competition.
