Nancy Pelosi may be celebrating today because her House version of health care reform was rammed through her House of Representatives.

But, the fact is San Fran Nan may have killed the Obama Presidency and her own Democrat majority in Congress.

The issue of public funding for abortion via the Stupak amendment for health care reform is NOT over and simply moves over to the U.S. Senate and any conference committee.

With ONLY one Republican voting for Obamacare in the House and NO GOP Senators (including a few Democrat Senators like Joe Lieberman) favoring this House version with a public option, the President may have to resort to the nuclear option of “reconciliation” in order for this legislation to pass. These kind of strong arm tactics and lack of bipartisanship WILL be used against Obama and his party in 2010 and 2012.

President Obama and Nancy Pelosi may have won the battle but lost the war.

Previous:
The Day By Day Archive

California U.S. Senate candidate Carly Fiorina at Goal Line Productions in Pleasanton, Califonia, November 6, 2009.

An interesting piece about Carly Fiorina and her fight with cancer.

Tough-as-nails former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina kicked off her U.S. Senate campaign this week with defiant words for a ruthless opponent – her cancer.

“Let me start with the most obvious question: What’s with the hair?” she asked a crowd in Orange County, motioning to the graying buzz cut that replaced her auburn wigs of recent months.

“I’m happy to tell you that having been through surgery and chemotherapy and radiation, breast cancer is officially behind me. I feel absolutely great and I am raring to go.”

In California, where politics and drama are wedded, the Republican candidate’s public embrace of a disease that has ravaged millions of American women could resonate with women, who comprise the majority of the state’s 17 million voters and traditionally have been willing to cross party lines for candidates they like, experts said.

Will this translate into votes as she runs against Senator Barbara Boxer? Who knows and I know Carly does not care.

Carly has told me that she has seen the good, the bad and the ugly over the past year in the American health care system. This background can only help in crafting any reform of health care delivery.

And, the message that anyone can come back from cancer and run a vigorous Senate campaign is a inspiring life lesson for all of us.

I mean what do you expect from a Chicago POL with no military experience that voted “Present” most of his life.

Of course, Obama’s conduct is condemnable and today his Obamacare bill in the House will likely pass with its concomitant abortion funding by taxpayers.

The Winds of Change will be blowing in DC in preparation to the 2010 midterm Congressional elections as Obama’s poll numbers plummet.

Senate Democrats Force Climate Bill Through Committee Despite Republican Boycott
Democratic senators on the Environment and Public Works Committee dismissed a Republican boycott of the panel's markup session and passed a climate change bill 11-1, with only Sen. Max Baucus of Montana opposing. When Republicans refused to attend markup sessions, committee chairwoman Sen. Barbara Boxer of California used an obscure procedure that allows a bill to be voted out of committee by a simple majority without considering amendments. The bill would mandate a 20 percent reduction in the United States' carbon emissions by the end of the next decade.

Carly Fiorina: Reagan Republican
It seems some conservative bloggers are so devoted to defeat the more establishment Republicans in the race that they assume all contests on the right are between a “stimulus” supporters like Charlie Crist and Marco Rubio or Dede Scozzafava and Doug Hoffman. Here, in the Golden State, some of my fellows in the rightosphere, including some very good bloggers are committed to Assemblyman Chuck DeVore in the race to replace our big-spending, California citizens-avoiding junior Senator Ma’am Barbara Boxer.

And because his opponent Carly Fiorina is backed by many establishment figures, they figure she’s not different than Dede.

CA-Sen: Barbara Boxer votes to allow 9/11 terrorists to possibly relocate to California
California has problems, higher than average unemployment, a budget that’s bust and a man-made drought, however that is nothing compared to what California Barbara Boxer has planned – housing the 9/11 terrorists somewhere in the golden state.

Yes, move over Alcatraz, Boxer would like to see the 9/11 terrorists tried in federal civilian courts instead of traditional military commissions.

The same dirt bags that were responsible for killing more than 3,000 innocent Americans in 2001, may be transferred to California soil and join the ranks of Charles Manson, Hillside Strangler and O.J. Simpson.

Amendment 2669 in the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2010 was written by Sen. Lindsey Graham-R S.C.; the amendment would have prevented those responsible for the 9/11 attacks any funds for prosecution.

California’s other Senator Diane Feinstein-D joined her partner in crime in voting to allow the terrorists to be tried in federal court.

Illegal Immigration may threaten Obamacare vote
The illegal immigration issue is emerging as the biggest threat to passing healthcare reform in the House.

Congressional Hispanics have threatened to vote against the bill because of a last-minute threat from within the Democratic Caucus to bolster the House bill’s immigration restrictions to match those included in the Senate Finance bill.
And they’re also fighting President Barack Obama, the original sponsor of the language prohibiting illegal immigrants from accessing the public health insurance exchange.

On Thursday afternoon, four leaders of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) traveled to the White House to meet with Obama on behalf of the entire group.

CA-Sen: Golden State Showdown
Earlier today, Brian noted the endorsement race between former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina and California Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, but I thought I'd add a few broader points about the sure-to be contentious California Senate primary.

It's pretty clear that DeVore, who has less built-in fundraising advantages and lacks institutional support, will try to Scozzafava-ize Fiorina. Essentially, his best bet is to portray her as a liberal who is being thrust upon voters by the establishment, while he tries to galvanize grassroots activists -- and grab the online donations that go along with it. This much was pretty clear when DeVore spoke at a Spectator Newsmaker Breakfast in August. At the time, Fiorina wasn't even running yet, but he blasted her as a "rich moderate" and "self-funded dilettante."

In addition to fiscal discipline, however, DeVore's closet includes some weird and potentially damaging associations. As pointed out by a Republican source, the assemblyman is connected to noted birther Floyd Brown. Brown, who is famous for creating the 1988 Willie Horton ad and, more recently, pushing an effort to impeach Barack Obama, was supported by DeVore in his efforts to attack Democratic candidates in the 2008 presidential primary.

"Poll after poll shows it works," DeVore said of Brown's deeply controversial product.

All of which is not to say that associations like these -- and his relative obscurity -- will trip DeVore up in a primary race. Indeed, he likely relishes his current frame as a man of the conservative fringe.

It's pretty clear that DeVore, who has less built-in fundraising advantages and lacks institutional support, will try to Scozzafava-ize Fiorina. Essentially, his best bet is to portray her as a liberal who is being thrust upon voters by the establishment, while he tries to galvanize grassroots activists — and grab the online donations that go along with it.
Carla Fiorina's been (officially) on the campaign trail for, what, three days and it's like she's already wearing the GOP Senate crown. Boxer, Boxer, Boxer, Boxer, Boxer. That's the only opponent she can talk about.

Hey Carly, where's the respect for Chuck D from the OC, aka her GOP primary opponent Orange County Assemblyman Chuck DeVore? At her Pleasanton stop Friday, C-Fi was asked why she keeps talking about Boxer and not Chuck:

"She is the opponent," Carly said and laughed.

A key U.S. Senate environment committee approved a Democratic climate change bill on Thursday that would require industry to cut emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases 20 percent by 2020 from 2005 levels.

The bill approved by the Environment and Public Works Committee will now become one of several initiatives in the Senate aimed at attacking global warming. But they are unlikely to produce legislation that would be voted on by the full Senate until next year at the earliest.

With Republicans boycotting the environment panel's measure, saying more analysis of the legislation was needed, 10 Democrats approved the bill and one Democrat, Senator Max Baucus, voted against it.

Senator John Kerry, who co-authored the bill with fellow Democrat Barbara Boxer, is leading an effort with some Republicans and the White House to draft a compromise.

Poll Watch: Meg Whitman lead growing in California Governor's Race
Former eBay executive Meg Whitman has opened up a wide lead in the Republican race for governor, according to the latest Capitol Weekly/Probolsky Research poll.

About a third of Republicans and decline-to-state voters who said they intend to vote Republican said they favor Whitman, who has a 3-to-1 edge over rival contender Tom Campbell, Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner remains stuck in a distant third, with 5.5 percent of Republican support.

The numbers show a significant increase in recent weeks for Whitman that reflects her prodigious spending. Already, seven months before the primary and full year before the general election, Whitman has spent more than $19 million. The level of spending is remarkable, even in a state accustomed to multimillion-dollar campaigns.

Carly Fiorina's record at HP will be key to Senate race
Carly Fiorina's claim to fame — her five-and-a-half years as chief executive at Hewlett-Packard Co. — could also be her greatest vulnerability in next year's U.S. Senate race in California.

Hours before Fiorina made her candidacy official on Wednesday, her campaign aides sent reporters an 11-page report touting her record at HP. At the same time, Boxer's team was portraying Fiorina as an insensitive CEO who oversaw the firing of thousands of workers and a then-controversial merger with Compaq Computer Corp.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi Breaks Pledge to Put Final Health Care Bill Online for 72 Hours Before Vote
Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office tells THE WEEKLY STANDARD that the speaker will not allow the final language of the health care to be posted online for 72 hours before bringing the bill to a vote on the House floor, despite her September 24 statement that she was "absolutely" committed to doing so.

House members are still negotiating important issues in the bill--whether it will provide taxpayer-funding for abortions, for example. Pelosi is pushing for a Saturday House vote, and a number of big changes will be introduced, likely less than 24 hours before the vote takes place (if in fact it does). The Rules Committee hasn't yet released its resolution, or rule, that must be passed before the bill can move from committee to the floor. The rule will set the terms of debate and determine what amendments are in order.

Carly Fiorina announcement is imminent, setting up an intriguing Senate race against Barbara Boxer
After months of hints and trial balloons, one of Silicon Valley's most recognizable and controversial figures has finally decided to take the plunge into politics, and California could be in for a roller-coaster ride of a political race over the next year.

Republican Carly Fiorina, the dynamic former CEO of Hewlett-Packard, is expected to launch her bid for the U.S. Senate this week, possibly at an appearance today in Orange County. Assuming she wins the primary, political analysts say she could give three-term Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer the run of her life.

A Fiorina-Boxer race would offer no shortage of rich story lines — corporate heavyweight vs. Washington insider, a woman recovering from breast cancer vs. one known for women's issues, an aggressive business executive vs. a combative politician.

Meg Whitman's campaign spending is causing a stir
The Republican gubernatorial candidate in California has spent $19 million so far, with the election still seven months away. Her pace is called 'unprecedented' by one campaign veteran.
Whitman's pace is "unprecedented spending for a California gubernatorial race," said Jude Barry, campaign manager for the last mega-rich candidate to run for governor, Steve Westly.

She spent almost as much on chartered jets ($111,706) as Campbell spent in total ($147,030) from January through June, the latest financial reporting period. Her Internet operation cost nearly $1 million. "Nowhere near that has been spent in the past in any campaign that I've ever seen," veteran GOP consultant Richard Temple said of Whitman's Web platform.

The Poizner campaign, in comparison, spent $106,000 on technology.

Carly Fiorina: Why I'm running for Senate
This is what motivates me to run for the U.S. Senate. And so today I am announcing my candidacy to serve the people of California as your next U.S. senator.

Throughout my career I've brought people together, and I've solved problems. And that is what is needed in our government today. People who are willing to set aside ego and partisanship and instead work to develop solutions to our problems.

Our most pressing problems today are too few jobs for Americans and too much spending in Washington. As California's senator, economic recovery and fiscal accountability will be my priorities. I will not settle for a jobless recovery. And we can start the important work of getting our financial house back in order by demanding to know where our money is being spent. Let's put every government budget and every government bill on the Internet for every citizen to see.

LA Times, USC to launch new political poll
The Los Angeles Times and the University of Southern California announced today that they will co-sponsor six statewide public opinion polls leading up to the 2010 election.

"In a state as large and diverse as California, accurate and timely polling is a key tool to allow people to learn what their fellow Californians think about major issues. Making that sort of information available is a central part of our journalistic mission," Times editor Russ Stanton said in a statement.

The polls, which will ask Californians about a variety of political, social and cultural issues, will be released over the next 14 months. Professors from the USC Department of Political Science will work with the Times on the project, and discussions on methodology and analysis of the poll results will be incorporated into graduate and undergraduate classes at USC, according to a press release.

The results of the first poll are set to be released in Sunday's Los Angeles Times.

GOP warns Sen. Barbara Boxer on climate bill
The top Republicans on six committees with jurisdiction over the Senate climate bill have sent a letter to Environment and Public Works committee Chairman Barbara Boxer urging her to back off of her decision to force the bill through the committee without Republican participation.

Democrats will need bipartisan support to overcome a possible filibuster of the legislation when it reaches the full Senate. Sen. John Kerry, (D-Mass.), and Lindsay Graham, (R-S.C.) have been working to build GOP support for the bill.

But Boxer’s push to pass the bill out of committee, warn Republicans, could backfire.

California Sen. Barbara Boxer considers climate power play - Poisons the Waters
Barbara Boxer may not only force her climate bill through the Environment and Public Works Committee without any Republican votes; aides say she could also do it without any Republicans in the room at all.

Boxer (D-Calif.) could exploit a loophole in committee rules that will allow her to approve the bill with a simple majority of the 12 Democrats on the committee, even if no Republicans are present. Republicans have vowed to boycott the proceeding.

This end run around Republicans — ignoring the usual rules that require at least two Republicans to be present for a quorum — could further hinder the chances for an already troubled cap-and-trade bill.

“From our viewpoint, such an approach would severely damage, rather than help, the chances of enacting changes to our nation’s climate and energy policies,” wrote the top GOP senators on the six committees with jurisdiction over climate change legislation.

Sen. Barbara Boxer Presses Ahead With Climate Change Markup - Despite GOP Boycott
The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee went ahead and launched its markup of Chairman Barbara Boxer’s (D-Calif.) climate change legislation Tuesday morning, despite a boycott by a majority of the panel’s Republicans.

Where’s Mitt Romney in NY-23?
In October, everybody seemed to be doing it — getting into the campaign in New York’s 23rd Congressional District, that is. It was a three-way race among Republican Deirdre Scozzafava, Democrat Bill Owens, and Conservative Doug Hoffman to fill the seat that had been left vacant when President Obama tapped Republican John McHugh as secretary of the Army. Endorsements became such a popular sport for out-of-state Republicans that the special election came to seem a litmus test for conservatives looking at the 2012 presidential race.

Senate Republicans boycott climate meeting -- Shun Sen Barbara Boxer
German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday urged Congress to take dramatic action to stop climate change, but the political difficulties were evident as Republicans boycotted a Senate committee meeting on a global warming bill.

"We cannot afford missing the objectives in climate protection," Merkel said at a joint session of Congress. "The world will look to us, to the Europeans and to the Americans."

Just before Merkel's speech, Republicans shunned the meeting of the Environment and Public Works Committee to protest the refusal of Chairwoman Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) to order a full new analysis of the legislation. The walkout stalled action on the 959-page bill.

Senate climate bill faces challenges - Democrats Deeply Split
The climate-change bill that has been moving slowly through the Senate will face a stark political reality when it emerges for committee debate on Tuesday: With Democrats deeply divided on the issue, unless some Republican lawmakers risk the backlash for signing on to the legislation, there is almost no hope for passage.
"I think at the end of the day, the people who turn the switch on at home will be disadvantaged," Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) told CNBC on Friday, explaining why he did not think the bill Kerry had sponsored along with Environment and Public Works Chairman Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) could pass.

So Democratic leaders, with the support of the Obama administration, are trying to sway at least half a dozen Republicans by offering amendments to speed along their top priority: building nuclear power plants.

Nancy Pelosi's New Health-Care Bill - The Worst Bill Ever
Speaker Nancy Pelosi has reportedly told fellow Democrats that she's prepared to lose seats in 2010 if that's what it takes to pass ObamaCare, and little wonder. The health bill she unwrapped last Thursday, which President Obama hailed as a "critical milestone," may well be the worst piece of post-New Deal legislation ever introduced.

In a rational political world, this 1,990-page runaway train would have been derailed months ago. With spending and debt already at record peacetime levels, the bill creates a new and probably unrepealable middle-class entitlement that is designed to expand over time. Taxes will need to rise precipitously, even as ObamaCare so dramatically expands government control of health care that eventually all medicine will be rationed via politics.

With election looming, Harry Reid boosts his standing among liberals in Nevada
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has taken several steps in recent months that have bolstered his popularity among liberal Democrats back home.

Most prominently, Reid this past week announced his intention to include a government-run health insurance plan in the Senate healthcare reform bill, winning plaudits from prominent liberals in D.C. and Nevada.

New Jersey Poll Watch: Gov Race Tips To Republican Christie
n the see-saw New Jersey Governor's race, Republican challenger Christopher Christie has 42 percent to Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine's 40 points, with 12 percent for independent candidate Christopher Daggett, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Six percent remain undecided.

This compares to a 43 - 38 percent Gov. Corzine lead, with 13 percent for Daggett, in an October 28 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

Among Daggett supporters, 38 percent say they might change their mind: 39 percent say Corzine is their second choice, while 29 percent say Christie is number two.

Only 10 percent of Christie voters and 13 percent of Corzine backers say they might change their mind

New Jersey Democrats Paying for Independent Candidate Dagggett's RoboCalls
New Jersey political blogs MoreMonmouthMusings and Save Jersey have been all over this story, which we mentioned last night. The first clue was that the number used to make the robocalls had also been used for robocalls for Maryland Democrat Governor candidate Martin O’Malley in 2006. Of course, the Daggett campaign could have just hired a Democrat firm to make the calls, Today, however, we have definitive proof that the New Jersey Democratic State Committee is paying for ads attacking GOP candidate Chris Christie and promoting Independent candidate Chris Daggett.

Senator Orrin Hatch: Healthcare reform bills threaten survival of two-party system
The healthcare reform proposals before Congress threaten the existence of the two-party system, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) alleged Monday morning.

Hatch asserted that the health bills, which he believes represent a "step-by-step approach to socialized medicine," will lead to Americans' dependence on Democrats for their health and other issues.

"And if they get there, of course, you're going to have a very rough time having a two-party system in this country, because almost everybody's going to say, 'All we ever were, all we ever are, all we ever hope to be depends on the Democratic Party,' " Hatch said during an interview with the conservative CNSNews.com.

"That's their goal," Hatch added. "That's what keeps Democrats in power."

California Dem. Sen. Barbara Boxer pushes ahead with climate bill
Senate Environment and Public Works committee chairwoman Barbara Boxer (D-Ca.) said that she plans to mark-up her climate bill on Tuesday, moving forward despite Republican concerns about the pace of the legislation.

"There objections don't pass the smell test," she said. "It seems to me they just want to delay this and delay it, so we don't make progress on this crucial issue."

All the Republicans on the committee are expected to vote against the legislation.

Nevertheless, Republicans have said that they would like more time to review the chairman's mark up, and to see a Congressional Budget Office score for the bill and a more throughout analysis by the Environmental Protection Agency before a vote by the committee.

“Why are we trying to jam down this legislation now?” asked Ohio Republican Sen. George Voinovich. “Wouldn’t it be smarter to take our time and do it right like we didn’t last year.”

Poll Watch: Republican Christie Beating Democrat Governor Corzine in New Jersey
Republican Chris Christie continues to hold a three-point advantage over incumbent Democrat Jon Corzine in New Jersey's down-to-the-wire race for governor.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state, conducted Thursday night, shows Christie with 46% of the vote and Corzine with 43%. Those numbers are unchanged from earlier in the week and little changed from polling conducted the week before.

Seven members of House defense subcommittee scrutinized by ethics investigators
The investigations by two separate ethics offices include an examination of the chairman of the Appropriations subcommittee on defense, John P. Murtha (D-Pa.), as well as others who helped steer federal funds to clients of the PMA Group. The lawmakers received campaign contributions from the firm and its clients. A document obtained by The Washington Post shows that the subcommittee members under scrutiny also include Peter J. Visclosky (D-Ind.), James P. Moran Jr. (D-Va.), Norm Dicks (D-Wash.), Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) , C.W. Bill Young (R-Fla.) and Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.).

Mike Huckabee hearts no one in New York's 23rd district - No Endorsement for Doug Hoffman
One name is notably absent from the list of prominent conservatives who have lined up against the GOP nominee in the Nov. 3 New York special election: former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

Even as other past and prospective Republican presidential candidates have offered their endorsements, Huckabee has conspicuously declined to officially support Conservative Party nominee Doug Hoffman, a decision that has left bewildered many of the social conservatives whom he assiduously courted in his 2008 bid.

“It’s very disappointing,” said Tom McClusky, vice president for government affairs at the Family Research Council. “You have names out there like Sarah Palin, Fred Thompson and Tim Pawlenty who are willing to take a stand. You’d think that would have pushed him to make a decision.”
++++++
Same with Mitt Romney.

Obamacare: Calorie counts for Big Macs, vending machines = The Nanny State
Democrats want you to know that your McDonald's Angus Burger meal has about 1,500 calories -- before you buy and burp.

Buried deep in the House health care bill is a provision, likely to raise nanny-state hackles, requiring fast-food chains and vending machine owners to notify customers of calorie counts -- by conspicuously posting nutritional information on menus or machines.

The provision -- Section 2572 -- requires retail food establishments "part of a chain with 20 or more locations" to list calorie counts "on the menu board including a drive-through board," as is currently required in New York City and other localities.

A "vending machine operator shall provide a sign in close proximity to each article of food or the selection button" that includes similar data.

New York, California and 13 other states filed suit against Amgen Inc. today, alleging that the Thousand Oaks biotech company offered kickbacks to medical providers to boost sales of its anemia drug, Aranesp.

The suit, filed in federal court in Massachusetts, also alleges that Amgen and two other defendants -- a group drug-purchasing network and the drug wholesaler ASD Healthcare -- "would encourage medical providers to bill third party payers such as Medicaid for free Aranesp that were provided at no cost," according to a statement issued by New York Atty. Gen. Andrew Cuomo.

In a statement, Amgen said, "We believe that the allegations are without merit, and we look forward to the opportunity to examine these matters with the states before the court."

The company said it would not comment further because the case is in litigation.
