Menu Plan Monday

Did the beginning of the week sneak up on you and you haven't menu planned yet? If not, don't despair! Treat this week as your menu planning idea week and start gathering some recipes that sound good, then begin to make a list of ingredients you'll need and you will be ready for next week's Menu Plan Monday. Now that I have been back on the wagon for the last 3 weeks, the chore of menu planning has been cut down to minutes and setting recipes aside for the next week. It makes life so much less stressful when 6pm rolls around.

MY PLAN:

Monday: Turkey Croquettes (cooked a turkey last week, need to use it up!)

Tuesday: Cashew Tuna (didn't make it last week, now's the time), salad

Wednesday: Crockpot Pasta Fagioli, homemade bread

Thursday: Dinner at Friends

Friday: Crockpot Quinoa Casserole ( My husband is requesting more vegetarian. WHAT?!)

Saturday: Coconut Beef Crockpot, fried zuchinin w/mozzerella

Sunday: Leftovers

Want To Ride A Coupon Train?

Are you looking for different coupons to increase your savings? Would you like to trade coupons with others, but don't want to leave your home? Join a new Frugal Living NW Coupon Train!

Coupon trains are simply a way of exchanging coupons by mail. An envelope full of coupons (50-70) arrives in the mail, you take the ones you want, replace them with coupons from your stash and send the envelope along to the next person on the train. That's about it.

I am going to set up two trains right now: a beginning train and an advanced train.

The beginning train will consist of 4-6 people who have just started couponing and have primarily Sunday paper and printable coupons. To qualify for this train, you must have been collecting coupons for at least two months.

The advanced train will consist of 4-6 people who have been couponing for at least six months with a hefty supply of coupons consisting of more than just Sunday paper and printable coupons: blinkies, tearpads, rebate forms, home mailers, etc.

General Rules:

1. Expiration Date Rule: Coupons added by a member must not expire within 20 days of mailing. If you mail on November 1, the expiration dates on the coupons you added must be after November 20. You are welcome to add additional coupons with shorter expiration dates.

2. "Golden" Rule: Give coupons that you would like to receive. Add coupons to the mix that others will find valuable -- not just the junky ones you want out of your box. For example, don't add vitamin coupons, as most people don't use them. And don't "gut" the envelope of all the good coupons. If there are multiples of a great coupon, leave some for the next riders.

3. Shipping Rule: The envelope must be mailed from your home within 2 days of receiving it -- you receive it on Monday and send it out no later than Wednesday. If everyone follows this rule, a train with 4-6 people will go through the entire list within about a month. Don't join the train if you don't have the time to send it out in a timely manner.

4. Posting Rule: Each member will receive access to the Frugal Living NW Google Group and will be expected to post when you receive and mail your envelope. This will help the next riders know when to expect their coupons.

My Safeway Shopping Trip

The Whole Load

I did it! I spent $55.27 out of pocket, used $42.56 worth of coupons (manufacturer's & eCoupons) and used $63.67 in Club Card Savings.

Here are the details:

One $10 Kohl's cash printed
No matter how diligent I am in keeping track of my total, I'm always wrong. This time I was off by about $3, which is pretty good considering how many manufacturer's and eCoupons I used.
The Breyer's $2 catalina did not print
The Home For The Holiday's catalina did not print. This was my scenario:

5 Betty Crocker Frosting = $9.95
2 Progresso Broth = $6.50
1 Gold Medal Flour = $1.50
2 Breyer's Ice Cream = $5.98
1 Bisquick = $2.50
Total = $26.43

Total OOP = $9.51 after store sales, coupons & eCoupons

Totally sweet, if only it would have worked. Several possible reasons why the cat didn't print: only 2 out of 5 Betty Crocker Frostings counted towards the $25 and I counted on $9.95 applying; only 1 out of 2 Progresso Broth counted; the Breyer's doesn't count (it's not tagged at my store).

I used probably 20 internet printable coupons without any problems at all -- and several were identical (legit coupons, not copies) -- (5) $.50/1 Betty Crocker Frosting coupons, (2) $.50/1 Progresso Broth coupons. Those of you who are running into problems with your store accepting multiples and doubling IPs really need to find a more coupon-friendly store.

Close-ups

Despite my two catalinas not printing, I am happy with my purchase. I would have spent close to $40 just on the diapers at Costco and I scored a bunch of "real" food too. I will also get a $5 rebate from SC Johnson on the Glade candles & refills.

I'm planning to do another Home For The Holidays promo along with a Post Grape Nuts deal once my Grape Nuts coupons arrive in the mail. I need one more $10/$50 Safeway coupon, if any of my real-life-friends have one to spare!

And remember to buy The Sunday Oregonian if you need filler items to get to your target amount!

Safeway Shopping Strategy: Planning For This Weekend

Several people have commented in the past that they do not take advantage of the $10/$50 coupon or Super Coupon deals because they never spend that much money at Safeway. I totally understand, especially if you're used to shopping at WinCo for the bulk of your groceries.

Here are some ideas on what you can purchase to hit your target amount without being forced to pay more than you're used to:

Buy meat, dairy & produce -- Safeway's prices are pretty competitive on perishable items and many believe their selection to be of a higher quality. Look especially for clearanced meat. Freeze it if you're not planning to use it right away.
Do the Huggies diaper deal -- now you have almost $29 going towards your $50 total buying something many of you have to buy anyway:

Do a Home For The Holidays deal -- The $5 catalina and $10/$50 coupon should more than make up for the higher prices. You can also just buy the great deals, like the Betty Crocker Cake Mix & Frosting deal, Gold Medal Flour, Breyers and Progresso Broth. That's my plan.
Do a couple of Mix & Match Cereal deals (limit 20) -- this is a great opportunity to stock up on your favs!

My plan is to hit Safeway early tomorrow. I'll post my loot as soon as I can. I may need a wide-angle lens.

Safeway: Home For The Holidays Promo List

I just returned from Safeway and have a fairly comprehensive list of participating products with prices. Safeway is rolling out a new deal where they have lowered prices on almost every item in the store (more on that next week) so there are not "sale" prices right now, which means these prices should be consistent throughout the promotion (end of November).

I'm missing some items as not everything is tagged in the aisles. Be sure to look at the promo display at the front of your store for the best selection. See some coupon match-ups here.

One thing to note is that most of these prices are a bit higher than WinCo or Super Walmart. As you plan your trip, try to include items that are a good deal and remember that you will be using your $10/$50 coupon and getting a $5 catalina that you can roll to another HFTH transaction. Your promotion total needs to hit $25 before manufacturer's coupons & Safeway doubles.
