Wedding Songs

We did not have a wedding song. I didn't want one, to my mother's disappointment. Our first dance as a married couple was to The Stylistics' "You're A Big Girl Now." Truth is I didn't want to do that either. I am not a romantic person. Not at all. I wanted to elope, but my parents would have been hurt if their eldest child deprived them of a wedding.

After the reception hubby and I stopped for a bite to eat. I changed from the dress, but kept the veil on (my friends' idea); in the parking lot of hubby serenaded me with "When I'm With You" by Tony Terry. Hubby is the romantic one. This is one of my favorite songs.

I'm truly at a loss for words. In total shock. Wow. Michael RIP.

I had the pleasure of seeing, no experiencing, MJ in concert. I was 13 years old and my parents gave me permission to attend on a week night with an older cousin. I had a blast seeing MJ and his brothers singing and dancing. It was one of the best concerts I've gone to.

My favorite video of all time is "Billy Jean." My favorite MJ album is "Off The Wall." I have a hard time choosing a favorite MJ song - ABC, I Want You Back, Got To Be There, Rock With You, Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, Man In The Mirror, You Are Not Alone...

Baby Brother called me over and over so that we could sing this one together:

It was just down right difficult to choose "the greatest." I want to pay homage to the creators, innovators, and architects of rock 'n roll. Here's a toast to Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Louis Jordan, Big Joe Turner, Big Mama Thorton, and the countless other Black musician I haven't named. Much respect to your art and your genius.

I've chosen Ike and Tina to represent Rock 'n Roll. Ike's musical genius and innovation is overshadowed by his demons. While I don't celebrate the man, the musician greatly influenced music and other musicians. Ike wrote, produced, sang background, and played piano on what has been deemed the first rock 'n roll hit record, "Rocket 88," earning $40 for his efforts. link (There was no rock'n roll charts then, so the song made the R&B chart). And where would Ike be with the voice of Anna Mae Bullock, The Empress of Rock 'n Roll.

One of the most memorable appearances on "Soul Train" had to be of Al Green wearing black vinyl hot pants, hot pink camisole, a man purse, boots, and a fuzzy hot pink hat. If you don't remember, don't believe, or just want to see for yourself here he is singing "So Tired of Being Alone."

Instead of showcasing Rev. Al in all his glory I am spotlighting a group whose members were actual "Soul Train" dancers (two of them), Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel. Although there were others before, most of us remember Howard Hewitt as the third member of the group.

Did you guys know that Jeffrey Daniel taught MJ, yes that MJ, to moonwalk. He has choreographed several videos for his highness, the King of Pop. (video) The moonwalk itself has an interesting history dating back to 1955 and dancer Bill Bailey; some say Cab Calloway did a very similar dance move as early as 1932.

There is always one in a family who gets stuck in an era. So when a certain relative enters my sis will start humming and on cue and in rhythm Bro Man starts and we all know that "Superfly" has arrived. I will not reveal names!

Besides that Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly" is just funky. Enjoy your weekend and Happy OSF!
