There was some crazy timing this past Saturday. I was a maid of honor in a wedding...out of town...the weekend right after the article in the Star ran! Arg. NOT good timing. Luckily I called upon my faithful and hardworking friends Jenn, Monina and Tate to run the snow cone trailer...and they did a bang up job.

I made almost two times the amount of syrup that I usually do, optimistically anticipating some new customers from the Star article...and sure enough! They came. In troves. Which is great...

What is not great, is that a handful of people were left out in the cold (er...heat) because we sold out of syrup within 4 hours due to the huge new crowd of people...and it started to rain. So my apologies to anyone who missed out on the snow cones this Saturday.

This event made me realize that I need to let people know that ALL THE SYRUPS ARE HOMEMADE AND FRESH. So the good part is that you get an all natural treat without the dyes and aftertaste...but due to them being homemade and perishable, once they are gone, they're gone. I keep making more and more to do my best to accomodate my customers, but I have to set limits in order to keep the quality of my product as high as possible.

The long and short of it? COME EARLY, COME OFTEN! Because we often sell out.

West Side Garden Tour: Saturday June 13th

Gardens By Design, the annual event benefitting DIFFA (Design Industry Foundations Fighting AIDS) is taking place this weekend.

The Garden Tour will be coming through the West Side Neighborhood on Saturday, June 13th. Brian Morley, owner of Bergamot and Ivy will speak on the subject of container gardening at 17th & Summit (NW corner) from 11 - 11:30 A.M.

Stick around for an all natural snow cone afterward! Fresher than Fresh will have extended hours for the garden tour: noon - 9 PM.

We are currently in our off season, but never fear...We'll be back in action in May of 2009! Subscribe to our blog below to receive a reminder when we're about to hit the streets again. In the meantime, have a happy winter and stay warm!

As the year closes, I just want to say thank you to all of the wonderful people who have supported Fresher than Fresh in our first season. In particular: Gordon & Jennifer Roe from Tastebud Magazine, Jenny Vergara from Tablehopping/the Making of a Foodie, Sara Farrar Photography, Ryan and Leah Gale at C&G Construction, Todd & Tracy Shulte at Happy Gillis, the really nice bartender guy who Snowie accidentally fell on...you handled it like a champ, and all of my true blue friends for assisting when I needed it: Catherine, Dierdre, Leah and Ai.

Traveling foodies from Wisconsin!

This is Lorna and Mary...self proclaimed traveling foodies from Wisconsin. I was shocked and honored to find out that this dynamic duo hopped in the car and found me using their navigation device (which they fondly named Greta Garmin!) We chatted for quite a while, took pictures together and I made them a list of all of my favorite places to eat around town...Lorna & Mary, if you happen to read this, report back on your culinary adventure in Kansas City. Would love to know where you ended up! These adventure seeking ladies are without a doubt Fresher than Fresh.

August First Friday at Hammerpress

First Friday was a huge success! We sold out of every last drop...including the Daredevil Special! (which happened to be Blueberry Sage, by the way)

My favorite moments of the night:

#1: A nice man and his family befriended the two young women that were standing in line behind them. Much to their surprise, he generously paid for their snowcones...just because! The young women happened to be identical twins, which made the whole scenario that much cuter (for whatever reason) See?!? Snow cones make people happier....and friendlier.

#2 Although I did not see it with my own eyes, a friend relayed the story that a little girl helped herself to a spoon straw and proceeded to "eat" imaginary snow off of my mascot's head. (which is actually made of thousands of clear beads...but it's pretty convincing...especially to a 5 year old.) Probably good that I didn't witness that one myself or I would have fainted from the cuteness and wouldn't have been able to sling all those snowcones!

A quick thank you to my trusty assistant of the evening, Dierdre Hanlon. Couldn't have done it without you. :)

1st official Daredevil Special was: Agave Hibiscus!

Our first night featuring the Daredevil Special was a success! People loved it!

AGAVE HIBISCUS is as lovely and exotic as it sounds...even though it contains absolutely NO SUGAR! This syrup is sweetened with all natural sweeteners like agave nectar and a pinch of pure honey...which means it is deliciously refreshing AND low(er) in calories. Good for those watching their caloric intake, but still want a frosty treat to cool them down on hot summer nights in Kansas City.

I might keep this flavor around for my uber-health-conscious customers. Feel free to leave me a comment if you think it should stay...always good to get customer feedback!

FASHION SHOW

The fashion show on 18th Street was our second outing and it was a big success! Favorite story of the evening came from a sweet, health conscious mom who thanked me for "making her son's year". She tries to keep her kids from eating anything containing corn syrup or food coloring and said that our all-natural snowcones were such a fun treat for them because it is so hard to find sweet treats that don't have all that yucky stuff in them. Fresher than Fresh: Making the world a better place...one snowcone at a time. :)
