What is the Difference Between GSM and CDMA?

In cellular service there are two main competing network technologies: Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA). Cellular carriers including Sprint PCS, Cingular Wireless, Verizon and T-Mobile use one or the other. Understanding the difference between GSM and CDMA will allow you to choose a carrier that uses the preferable network technology for your needs.

The GSM Association is an international organization founded in 1987, dedicated to providing, developing, and overseeing the worldwide wireless standard of GSM. CDMA, a proprietary standard designed by Qualcomm in the United States, has been the dominant network standard for North America and parts of Asia. However, GSM networks continue to make inroads in the United States, as CDMA networks make progress in other parts of the world. There are camps on both sides that firmly believe either GSM or CDMA architecture is superior to the other. That said, to the non-invested consumer who simply wants bottom line information to make a choice, the following considerations may be helpful.

Coverage: The most important factor is getting service in the areas you will be using your phone. Upon viewing competitors' coverage maps you may discover that only GSM or CDMA carriers offer cellular service in your area. If so, there is no decision to be made, but most people will find that they do have a choice.

Data Transfer Speed: With the advent of cellular phones doing double and triple duty as streaming video devices, podcast receivers and email devices, speed is important to those who use the phone for more than making calls. CDMA has been traditionally faster than GSM, though both technologies continue to rapidly leapfrog along this path. Both boast "3G" standards, or 3rd generation technologies.

EVDO, also known as CDMA2000, is CDMA's answer to the need for speed with a downstream rate of about 2 megabits per second, though some reports suggest real world speeds are closer to 300-700 kilobits per second (kbps). This is comparable to basic DSL. As of fall 2005, EVDO is in the process of being deployed. It is not available everywhere and requires a phone that is CDMA2000 ready.

GSM's answer is EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution), which boasts data rates of up to 384 kbps with real world speeds reported closer to 70-140 kbps. With added technologies still in the works that include UMTS (Universal Mobile Telephone Standard) and HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access), speeds reportedly increase to about 275—380 kbps. This technology is also known as W-CDMA, but is incompatible with CDMA networks. An EDGE-ready phone is required.

In the case of EVDO, theoretical high traffic can degrade speed and performance, while the EDGE network is more susceptible to interference. Both require being within close range of a cell to get the best speeds, while performance decreases with distance.

Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards: In the United States only GSM phones use SIM cards. The removable SIM card allows phones to be instantly activated, interchanged, swapped out and upgraded, all without carrier intervention. The SIM itself is tied to the network, rather than the actual phone. Phones that are card-enabled can be used with any GSM carrier.

The CDMA equivalent, a R-UIM card, is only available in parts of Asia but remains on the horizon for the U.S. market. CDMA carriers in the U.S. require proprietary handsets that are linked to one carrier only and are not card-enabled. To upgrade a CDMA phone, the carrier must deactivate the old phone then activate the new one. The old phone becomes useless.

Roaming: For the most part, both networks have fairly concentrated coverage in major cities and along major highways. GSM carriers, however, have roaming contracts with other GSM carriers, allowing wider coverage of more rural areas, generally speaking, often without roaming charges to the customer. CDMA networks may not cover rural areas as well as GSM carriers, and though they may contract with GSM cells for roaming in more rural areas, the charge to the customer will generally be significantly higher.

International Roaming: If you need to make calls to other countries, a GSM carrier can offer international roaming, as GSM networks dominate the world market. If you travel to other countries you can even use your GSM cell phone abroad, providing it is a quad-band phone (850/900/1800/1900 MHz). By purchasing a SIM card with minutes and a local number in the country you are visiting, you can make calls against the card to save yourself international roaming charges from your carrier back home. CDMA phones that are not card-enabled do not have this capability, however there are several countries that use CDMA networks. Check with your CDMA provider for your specific requirements.

According CDG.org, CDMA networks support over 270 million subscribers worldwide, while GSM.org tallies up their score at over 1 billion. As CDMA phones become R-UIM enabled and roaming contracts between networks improve, integration of the standards might eventually make differences all but transparent to the consumer.

The chief GSM carriers in the United States are Cingular Wireless, recently merged with AT&T Wireless, and T-Mobile USA. Major CDMA carriers are Sprint PCS, Verizon and Virgin Mobile. There are also several smaller cellular companies on both networks.

FORMAT FOR PREPARATION OF PROJECT REPORT

ARRANGEMENT OF CONTENTS:

The sequence in which the project report material should be arranged and bound should be as follows:

The table and figures shall be introduced in the appropriate places.

PAGE DIMENSION AND BINDING SPECIFICATIONS:

The dimension of the project report should be in A4 size. The project report should be bound using light blue front cover (printed in black letters) and should be laminated.

PREPARATION FORMAT:

3.1 Cover Page & Title Page – A specimen copy of the Cover page & Title page of the project report are given in Appendix 1.

3.2 Bonafide Certificate – The Bonafide Certificate shall be in double line spacing using Font Style Times New Roman and Font Size 14, as per the format in Appendix 2.

The certificate shall carry the supervisor’s signature and shall be followed by the supervisor’s name, academic designation (not any other responsibilities of administrative nature), department and full address of the institution where the supervisor has guided the student. The term ‘SUPERVISOR’ must be typed in capital letters between the supervisor’s name and academic designation.

3.3 Abstract – Abstract should be one page synopsis of the project report typed double line spacing, Font Style Times New Roman and Font Size 12.

3.4 Table of Contents – The table of contents should list all material following it as well as any material which precedes it. The title page and Bonafide Certificate will not find a place among the items listed in the Table of Contents but the page numbers of which are in lower case Roman letters. One and a half spacing should be adopted for typing the matter under this head. A specimen copy of the Table of Contents of the project report is given in Appendix 3.

3.5 List of Tables – The list should use exactly the same captions as they appear above the tables in the text. One and a half spacing should be adopted for typing the matter under this head.

3.6 List of Figures – The list should use exactly the same captions as they appear below the figures in the text. One and a half spacing should be adopted for typing the matter under this head.

3.7 List of Symbols, Abbreviations and Nomenclature – One and a half spacing should be adopted or typing the matter under this head. Standard symbols, abbreviations etc. should be used.

3.8 Chapters – The chapters may be broadly divided into 3 parts (i) Introductory chapter, (ii) Chapters developing the main theme of the project work (iii) and Conclusions.

The main text will be divided into several chapters and each chapter may be further divided into several divisions and sub-divisions.

Each chapter should be given an appropriate title.
Tables and figures in a chapter should be placed in the immediate vicinity of the reference where they are cited.

Footnotes should be used sparingly. They should be typed single space and placed directly underneath in the very same page, which refers to the material they annotate.

3.9 Appendices – Appendices are provided to give supplementary information, which is included in the main text may serve as a distraction and cloud the central theme.

Appendices should be numbered using Arabic numerals, e.g. Appendix 1, Appendix 2, etc.
Appendices, Tables and References appearing in appendices should be numbered and referred to at appropriate places just as in the case of chapters.

Appendices shall carry the title of the work reported and the same title shall be made in the contents page also.

3.10 List of References –The listing of references should be typed 4 spaces below the heading “REFERENCES” in alphabetical order in single spacing left – justified. The reference material should be listed in the alphabetical order of the first author. The name of the author/authors should be immediately followed by the year and other details.

A typical illustrative list given below relates to the citation example quoted above.

Assuming you have a well-written and honest resume, review it often, especially before an interview. Many questions asked will be generated by the information in your resume. Question yourself about every item in it, and be ready to respond, preferably using concrete examples.

Candidates who arrive just in time are also generally flustered, which can hurt the interview. Get there early and use the cushion of time to gather your thoughts.

Choose the appropriate wardrobe and have it ready ahead of time. Arriving with a button missing or scuffed shoes doesn't make a good initial impression. Dress conservatively, even if the culture of the company with which you're interviewing is informal. You can always dress down once you've landed the job.

Leave any negative feelings at home; bring only your positive, upbeat self to the interview. Pledge to be friendly with everyone with whom you come in contact, including the receptionist, the interviewer's secretary, and everyone else introduced to you. Managers often ask others who come in contact with a candidate for their evaluation.

Be committed to speaking positively and kindly about other people, including fellow students, professors, and previous employers. If the interview has come through your college placement office, there is a good possibility you will know some other students with whom you are in competition. If their names come up, avoid the natural temptation to point out something negative. Rather than enhancing your own potential for getting the job, you diminish yourself in the interviewer's eyes.

Potential employers want "proof" of the things you say, so be ready to present examples of the skills and abilities attained in school and in previous jobs.

Be alert to your surroundings and listen carefully to what the interviewer says. Often, you'll learn what the interviewer likes and doesn't like in a candidate, as well as gain insight into what the job demands. A good listener is able to build upon that knowledge and come back with the sort of responses an interviewer wants to hear.

Remember that any answer you give to a question is likely to be followed by additional questions. If you're asked if you like to read, simply saying "yes" isn't sufficient when the interviewer follows up with, "What books have you read lately, and which have impressed you most?"

Avoid accepting offers of food or beverages during the interview. Also, decline the offer of alcoholic beverages.

Every interview should be followed with a short, courteous note thanking the interviewer. The note could indicate something positive in your favor that you forgot to bring up during the interview itself, as well as express your continued interest in the position.

WHEN TO STUDY

1. Study difficult or boring subjects first: Always make it a habit to study first a subject/topic that is difficult for you. If your maths problems put you to sleep get to them first, while you are fresh. Don’t try to avoid studying a subject no matter how difficult it is for you. In such cases, seek help from a teacher or even a friend to help you through the subject/topic.

2. Study at your best time: To some this may be early in the morning. To some it may be late night. To others it may be after lunch. Find out your preferred best time and study during that time.

3. Use your waiting time: Waiting for the bus, waiting at the canteen to get served, waiting for the teacher to arrive in the class etc. can be used to review learnt material. Carry 8x12 cm cards with formulas, facts or definitions and pull them out anywhere.

4. Use a regular convenient study area: Decide which is the best place for you to study. This may be a quiet independent room at home, a corner of the library, under a tree or in a park. When you arrive at that place, you can focus your attention more quickly.

5. Use the library of your college for study: Libraries are designed for learning. Reference books are available.Learn from the librarian or a teacher or a friend how to use library effectively for study. Most people can get more done in a shorter time in the library.

6.Study where you will be alert: You can study in a position where you will be alert , generally in a sitting position on a straight backed chair. Avoid sofa, bed or easy chairs where you will tend to sleep.

7. Pay attention to your study: Concentrate on what you study. When you get distracted by other thoughts, notice the thoughts and let them go out of your mind.

8. Agree with room-mates on study time: When sharing a room with other students, make sure that everyone in the room is clear about
your study schedule. Also make things clear to parents and other family members.

9. Learn to say NO: This is a time saver and valuable life skill for everyone. Most of us would not want to displease anybody by refusing to do some work for them. You must say “No” if it interferes with your study.

10. Hang a “Do not Disturb” sign on your door or in front of your table.

11. Plan for the next day before you go to bed: If you want to make some telephone calls in the morning, look up those numbers and note them down. If you want to meet someone next morning, locate the address correctly and note them down. Keep a note of all that you have to do next day.

12. Avoid noise distractions during study: To promote concentration avoid studying in front of a television. Majority of students prefers silence for study even though a few like carefully selected and controlled music.

13. Notice how others misuse your time: If there are certain friends or relatives who consistently interrupt your study time, avoid them or send them a clear message not to disrupt your studies.

14. Set a reasonable goal for every session of your study and try to stick to it without fail. This is a confidence builder for you.

15.Don’t task yourself too much: If you are bored of studying, switch over to drawing or writing. Develop an attitude of “ I can achieve and I will”. This can work wonders.

18.Ask; “ Could I find the time, if I really wanted to?” The next time when you are tempted to say “ I just don’t have time,” pause for a minute and question the truth of this statement. Could you find 4 more hours this week for study? Suppose that someone offered to pay RS.10,000 to you to find those 4 hours. Could you find time if vast sums of money are involved? Remember, when it comes to college education, large sums of money are involved. Promise can work wonders.

19. Ask: ”Can I delegate this?” You can delegate some tasks to friends or family members like going to a library for getting books, posting a letter, purchasing some standard stationery items etc. But you cannot delegate certain study tasks like writing an essay or working out an assignment.

20.Categorise the activities into 3 groups and give preference to important ones. List of activities of each day can be prepared the previous evening. Activities that are very important are marked A. These are the ones that you have to carry out immediately. B activities are those that are important but not important enough that they can be postponed slightly. All those activities which do not require immediate attention are marked C. C marked activities are also simple and easy to carry out. Most students have what is called C syndrome. They bestow their attention and energy on C- type activities. They postpone A- type activities because they are difficult. You may never do the A activities. When you are stuck with the C syndrome, ask yourself the question,” Is this activity necessary? Should I take it up?”

Get a normal night’s sleep before the examination date
Reach exam centre early and relax or discuss with close friends
Read the question paper and the instructions thoroughly. Mark the questions which you find you can answer.
Ask the invigilator for clarifications, if any.
Make a rough time scheme and decide how much time you should allot to each question.
Leave 15 minutes at the end to review the answers and make corrections, as needed.
Before you start on any particular question, make sure you understand it/interpret it correctly.
Answer the easiest and shortest question first.
Answers should be brief and conforming to what is asked in the question.
Clearly understand the difference between the usages Define, Distinguish, Compare, List, Enumerate, Explain, Write short notes on, Differentiate, Sketch and explain etc.
If you get stuck up , proceed to the next question and come back at the end if there is time.
Leave a margin of 3 cm at the left side of the answer sheet, if there is no printed margin.
Mark the question numbers clearly in the left margin.
ORGANISE YOUR ANSWER SHEET: write legibly; use reasonably large size letters; don’t cram; space the lines reasonably apart; use a lined sheet below the answer sheet to ensure steady writing; use pen or dot pen with reasonably thick writing point; use blue black ink; do not use washable ink; use pencil and instruments for drawing figures, tables etc.

INTRODUCTION

PHANToM, means Personal HAptic iNTerface Mechanism, was developed at MIT as a relatively low cost force feedback device for interacting with virtual objects. Phantom device is a robot arm that is attached to a computer and used as a pointer in three dimensions, like a mouse is used as a pointer in two dimensions.

ABOUT PHANTOM

The PHANToM interface's novelty lies in its small size, relatively low cost and its simplification of tactile information. Rather than displaying information from many different points, this haptic device provides high-fidelity feedback to simulate touching at a single point. It just like closing your eyes, holding a pen and touching everything in your office. You could actually tell a lot about those objects from that single point of contact. You'd recognize your computer keyboard, the monitor, the telephone, desktop and so on.

A Phantom device and the Phantom Force Feedback extension can also be used to trace paths and/or move models in the absence of volume data. Although there will not be force feedback in such cases, the increased degrees of freedom provided by the device as compared to a mouse can be very helpful. The Phantom Force Feedback extension of Chimera allows a Phantom device to be used to guide marker placement within volume data. It is generally used together with Volume Viewer and Volume Path Tracer. SensAble Technologies manufactures several models of the Phantom. The device is only supported on SGI and Windows platforms. SensAble Technologies has announced that in summer of 2002 it will add support for Linux and drop support for SGI. The least expensive model (about $10,000 in 2001), the Phantom Desktop, is described here.

To integrate the PHANToM with a projection screen virtual environment several obstacles need to be overcome. First, the PHANToM is essentially a desktop device. To use it in a larger environment the PHANToM must be made mobile and height adjustable to accommodate the user.

INTRODUCTION

The Haptics Laboratory works on the engineering and design of design of haptic interfaces, that is, of systems, which comprise software and hardware components that concern the sense of touch.

They work on on-line computational models of interaction between objects (deformation, friction, cutting, etc) which can provide high-fidelity simulations as needed, for example, in the construction of surgical simulators. They are also interested in construction of surgical simulators. They are also interested in the study of perpetual effects involving touch, and to take advantage of them to create devices, visualization methods and tactile displays.

The laboratory is involved in exciting applications including rehabilitation, operator assistance in space, medicine, and computer music performance. In the past ten years, a Varity of haptics devices were created, including the Pantograph and the Freedom-7.Other devices based on different principles are presently being developed Actuators and their methods of control, being at the source of movement, are also of great interest.

The laboratory has also made contributions in robot programming, trajectory generation, mechanism design and computational collision detection. The Haptics Laboratory is the center for Intelligent Machines at McGill University.

Increasing Internet Band-Width By 20%

Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes like Windows Updates and interrogating your PC etc. Click Start then Run and type gpedit.msc

This opens the group policy editor.

Then go to:

Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Network-->QoS Packet Scheduler

and then to LimitReservableBandwidth. Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e."By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default." So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.It works on Windows 2000 and XP as well....

Some times it becomes necessary to block a few websites on our Computers for one or other reason.You can easily and effectivily block access to a website by adding it to your Windows HOSTS file.

1.Go to your HOSTS file which is located at:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC for Vista and XP
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC for Win 2000
C:\WINDOWS for Windows 98 and ME

2. Open HOSTS with Notepad.

The default Windows HOSTS looks like this:

3. Directly under the line that says 127.0.0.1 Localhost, you will want to type:

127.0.0.1 name of the URL you want to block

For example to block the MySpace.com homepage (highly recommended!), simply type:

127.0.0.1 myspace.com
127.0.0.1 www.myspace.com

Other parts of MySpace could be blocked in a similar way:

127.0.0.1 search.myspace.com
127.0.0.1 profile.myspace.com
etc etc etc…

You may need to add sites with both with and without the "www.". Test after blocking to make sure you got it right.

You can add as many sites as you wish to block in this fashion. I, myself, have over 12000 undesireable and dangerous sites in my personal HOSTS file!

4. Close Notepad and answer "Yes" when prompted.

5. Reboot your computer and attempt to access your now blocked website. You should see a Cannot find server or DNS Error saying: "The page cannot be displayed".

Some people suggest that you add a website that you wish to block by adding it to Internet Explorer's Restricted Zone. This does NOT totally block a site. It will only RESTRICT a site from certain actions such as using javascript, Active-X and Java etc.

Some people suggest that your add a website to the Internet Explorer 'Privacy' settings. This does not block a site. It only stops that site from using cookies.

IMPS stands for "Instant Messaging Presence Services". Building on the popularity of SMS, this technology introduces one exciting aspect to the mobile phone which is Messaging and Presence.

If you are connected to the internet, you need to make sure you get your computer set up properly if you want to avoid problems down the road.
With all the viruses, spyware and other threats on the internet today, no computer should be set up without the proper protection.

And that protection needs to be in place as soon after you hook up your new machine as possible.
The following five steps will make your computer a much harder target for threats. You still won't be completely immune to problems, but 99% of the time the threat will pass you by, looking for the easy mark.

1. Running a Personal Firewall
A personal firewall is software that basically makes your computer invisible to hackers, worms and other threats that can infect your computer over the internet.
Setting up a firewall is the absolute first thing you should do if you're going to connect to the internet. Without a firewall, your computer could get infected in as little as one minute after connecting.
If you have a brand new computer running Windows XP Service Pack 2, there is a firewall built into Windows. It will already have been turned on when you first set up your computer.
If you're running an older version of Windows, even an earlier version of Windows XP, there is no firewall automatically set up for you. In this case there are two possibilities:
- Your computer came pre-loaded with a firewall such as Norton Internet Security or McAfee Internet Security- You have no firewall installed and should download one ASAP.
If you don't have any personal firewall software installed, you should do so right away. Zone Alarm is a very good firewall program that has a version that you can download and install for free.

If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 2, you can double-check that automatic updates are turned on by clicking Start, then click Control Panel, then double-click Security Center. The window that opens will tell you if automatic updates are turned on, and lets you turn them on if they're not.

To turn on automatic updates in earlier versions of Windows XP, click on the Start menu, click Control Panel and then double-click on System. On the "Automatic Updates" tab, click the option to "Automatically download the updates and install them on the schedule I specify."
To turn them on in Windows 2000, click on Start, click Control Panel and then double-click on Automatic Updates. Again, click the option to "automatically download the updates and install them on the schedule I specify."

Now when Microsoft releases updates, they will be downloaded for you automatically and Windows will tell you when they are ready to be installed.

3. Install & Update Antivirus Software
Most new computers come with antivirus software these days. You might have Norton, McAfee, PC-Cillin or another brand. No matter what program you have, you will need to update it when you get connected to the internet.
It doesn't matter how new your computer is - there will be new viruses, and new updates for the antivirus software, since it was loaded.
The exact process is different for each brand of antivirus program, but most of them will have an icon in the bottom right corner of your desktop, beside the time. The icon might be a picture of a shield (McAfee), a stethoscope (Norton) or something else.
In most cases, if you point to the icon for your antivirus and click the right mouse button, a menu will pop up with an update option. It could be simply called update or could be something like Live Update or Download Latest Updates. If you click on the update option (with the left button this time) it will install the newest updates for you.

If you're not sure which icon is for your antivirus software, just point to each one for a few seconds and a little title should pop up telling you what it is.

4. Install Anti-Spyware Software
Spyware - and other things known as adware and malware - is becoming as big a problem as viruses. Spyware programs can cause a lot of problems with your computer, not to mention they can track your personal information and you never know where it's being sent.
Some new computers might includes antispyware software, but most of them don't yet. There are quite a few anti-spyware programs available, some free and some not. The one I recommend is from Microsoft and is one of the free ones.
One of the reasons I like it is because it always runs in the background and will automatically catch a lot of spyware before it gets on your computer.
Many of the other programs don't catch it until you run a scan. Not only does this allow things to get on your computer, it also means you have to actually remember to run a scan.

5. Set up a Free Email Account
This last item is not as critical as the first four, but I would highly recommend you set up an email account with one of the free services like Hotmail or Gmail.
Once you're on the internet, you'll find a lot of useful information that you want that requires you to provide an email address. In some cases, these people will end up sending you a bunch of spam.
If you use a free email account to sign up for anything that you don't know for sure you can trust, it's not going to fill your main email with a bunch of junk.
This goes for anything really, not just online information. If you're entering a contest or signing up for anything offline and you don't know where your information could end up being used, I would suggest using your free email address.
If worse comes to worse, and your free email address gets inundated with spam, you can always just set up a new one and let the old one expire.

Some of the better free email services are www.hotmail.com, www.gmail.com and www.yahoomail.com.

If you've had your computer for a while and never done any of these things, you should still take these steps to get it set up properly. It will definitely save you a lot of time - and possibly money - as you use your system.
