Instead the students, guided by educator Kapua Kirkland created their own local water reclamation project that ultimately took them all the way to Hawai`iʻs legislature making a very public stand advocating for cleaner water for Nanakuliʻs farms. KE AUPUNI UPDATE - APRIL 2026

Iran and the Hawaiian Kingdom

How does the United States’ current aggressive actions in Iran compare to the USA’s invasion of Hawaii in 1893? When the smoke clears in a few days (weeks? months?), Iran will still be a sovereign country, while Hawaii? … well, it’s complicated.

Over the centuries, certain criteria have developed regarding the nature and character of nation-states*, so that once a nation-state has been lawfully established, it is difficult to extinguish.

There are only two ways a nation-state can be extinguished:
1) Conquest: the military defeat and subjugation of the people and physical seizure of the territory by the victor; or

2) Consent: the free-will choice of its leaders (and/or people) to surrender and merge their country’s sovereignty to another.

This standard became more firmly fixed by the UN’s decolonization activities during the mid-20th Century.

Even the unconditional surrender of Japan and Germany after World War II, did not extinguish their sovereignty. They became occupied states but still retained their national identity, and the occupying forces administered and enforced the laws of Japan and Germany respectively, until they were able to resume self-governance: Japan in 1952 and Germany in 1945.

The absoption of the Eastern European states into the Soviet Union after World War II did not extinguish their sovereignty. When the Soviet Union collapsed in the early 1990s, despite having been completely dominated by the USSR, states like Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Czechoslovakia, and so forth, reemerged as sovereign and independent countries in continuity.

The fact is, despite outward appearances and public ignorance, according to established international standards, the lawful, sovereign entity — the Hawaiian Kingdom — still exists!

That is because, technically even after the illegal seizure and fake annexation, the status of the Hawaiian Kingdom and the Hawaiian people (referring to Hawaiian nationals) remained unchanged.

At no time did the Hawaiian Kingdom or Hawaiian nationals surrender their sovereignty or give their consent to merge with the United States. On the contrary, they expressed staunch, vociferous opposition to both the initial seizure and the annexation, as evidenced by the massive petitions and the prodigious protests and resistance.

As for the Hawaii Statehood vote of 1959… Although it was a complete fraud, it succeeded in fooling the United Nations (and the rest of the world) into accepting the United States’ false narrative that Hawaiians had overwhelmingly consented to become the 50th State of the United States.

The Hawaiian Kingdom continues to exist. It did not expire. It survives even having been buried alive under the layers of U.S. deception and fraud. The unfolding of invasive actions by the US in places like Iran and Venezuela, the threats to annex Greenland and take over Cuba, etc. are helping to bring better understanding of the situation in Hawaii and support for our campaign to Free Hawaii.

Set in the mid-nineteenth century, the opera reveals the little-known history of the Hawaiian Kingdom and its early struggles to maintain independence.

The focus is Ha`alilio’s 1842-45 mission to the United States, Great Britain, Belgium, and France to secure treaties recognizing Hawai`i as a sovereign nation with the goal of protecting the kingdom from annexation by foreigners.

What Constitutes a Nation?
The outpouring of kōkua and aloha for those devastated by the recent floods has been truly inspiring. The first responders here in Hawaiʻi were not the government agencies, but neighbors, friends and even strangers, that just showed up to help in time of need. Like the response to other disasters (the Kapoho eruption, the Lāhaina fire, etc.) the epic flooding reveals the true essence of Hawai’i… people caring for one another… This is the fundamental character, the heart, of our Lāhui, our nation.

Too often when we hear people speak of a “nation” they are referring to a legal, political entity as defined by the Law of Nations, the Montevideo Convention and other key documents concerning forms of government.

But a nation is much more than a political grouping or a government or physical territory. It is the people living together in community, working together and having each other’s back.

So, when we talk of restoring the Hawaiian Kingdom as a sovereign nation, we are not just talking about restoring the government or a political body or the territorial place or some legal entity on paper. We are talking about the people, and everything that affects the people’s well-being.

There is a saying that I learned years ago from our cousins, the Maori of Aotearoa. It goes: the speaker asks, “He aha mea nui?” (What is the most important thing?) The people answer: “He Tangata, he Tangata, he Tangata!” (The People, the People, the People!) In ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, that would be, “He Kanaka, he Kanaka, he Kanaka!”

This concept is central to who we are.

In 1810, when King Kaumualiʻi of Kauai and Niʻihau pledged his fealty to Mōʻī Kamehameha (King Kamehameha the Great) the unification of all the islands was completed. The first edict Kamehameha proclaimed was Māmala Hoe Kānāwai (The Law of the Splintered Paddle) which guaranteed the safety of all, especially women, children, sick and aged… as they traveled throughout the Kingdom. The story of how this came about is fascinating. Google it.

His sons, Kamehameha II and Kamehameha III continued that tradition of the aliʻi’s (chief’s) respecting and protecting the rights of the people and the aliʻi’s responsibility to place the welfare of the people as their most important duty. This was not a novel concept. It is a fundamental part of the traditional duties of the aliʻi.

In 1839 Kamehameha III issued a Declaration of Rights which many think is simply a reiteration of the American Bill of Rights. On first glance they may seem the same, but if you take a better look, they are profoundly different. Just compare the opening foundational statement of each.

The American version says: “…all men are created equal…” The Hawaiian version says “…all men are of one blood…” The American says we are legally on the same level, equal… The Hawaiian says, We are family! We have a sacred familial responsibility for one another.

This is why, I have no doubts that as the political body, the Hawaiian Kingdom reemerges, our Lāhui, the people, he kanaka, will respond, and rise to the occasion, guided by the in-bred spirit of ʻOhana, Lōkahi, Kōkua and of course, Aloha.
