…Like many hidden object adventure games, you have an inventory that fills up with items you can later select to use on objects in the background. Mousing over the scene often reveals objects that can be interacted with, signalled by a change in the mouse pointer. A set of gears means the object can be manipulated somehow, a set of boots means it’s an exit, a mouth means it’s someone (or something) you can talk to, etc. Many, many miscellaneous and extraneous bits of scenery can be clicked on for a description, a neat effect that I wish many other games would copy…

…Elementals: The Magic Key is a gorgeous-looking game and I found its story and world to be very well thought out, but also unengaging and slow to get into. The game throws so many new fantasy elements at the player at once that it’s hard to care about all of them. In fact I didn’t even realize that Albert was actually in the Academy building (as opposed to his own home) until the game mentioned that the library we were about to enter was the Academy library. But I did eventually get into the story, to which I can only credit the excellent artwork.”

…On the plus side, the graphics aren’t bad. The locations are bright, and for the most part you won’t find yourself squinting trying to find items that are ridiculously small or blurry. But there’s nothing terribly unique about the nondescript ruins and generic jungles and temples. In truth, nothing about Alexandra Fortune really sets it apart from other similar games. It’s perfectly playable and not a frustrating game at all, but a lack of compelling story or unique puzzles means it’s not a title that you’re going to remember in a few weeks, or want to play a second time.”

They merely represent props needed for each of the magicians’ signature tricks. Notes about each magician and the Conjurer himself are saved in his own journal (written in invisible ink, of course!) that you quickly find in your investigation…

…The Conjurer is quite generous with hints, and would make an excellent first hidden object game for someone new to the genre. Clicking on any word in your grocery list of hidden objects reveals its silhouette - perfect if you want to know whether you’re looking for a baseball “bat” or flying mammal “bat” - or even just to see whether a spear is aligned horizontally or vertically. You also have a crystal ball that you can click on to show you the location of an object. This can be reused as often as you like, but it takes perhaps twenty seconds to recharge between uses. So-called “super hints” are also given out, one per magician suspect, that can tell you the exact location of a specific object. These don’t carry over into future magicians’ chapters, so use them while you’ve got them…

… Overall, I was very impressed with The Conjurer: A Magical Mystery. The hidden object scenes have been assembled well, with only a touch of clipartitis, and the story of Archibald, Adelaide, Alexandria, etc. actually really interested me. Perhaps it’s just my love of the “strangers invited to a secluded spot and one of them is a killer” genre… or the really exemplary chicken sandwich I had for lunch, but I enjoyed this game much more than I expected. Even though it’s not as clever as full-on inventory style object manipulation hidden object game adventures, the magic tricks are fun and I had a blast.”

After touring San Francisco and Sydney, your family has decided to take in the sights of New York City, hitting hot spots like Wall Street, Chinatown, Little Italy, and Harlem. At each stop, you’ll scan the area for a list of hidden items. At least two of the items will be hidden in special areas that you’ll have to zoom in on to search, but both the special spot and the objects are indicated in blue, so that you’re not left searching in vain. The items are well hidden, but never unfairly, so a keen eye and patience will spell success. Hint coins will help you through those moments when you’re just plain stumped; you can only hold five at a time, but when your supply drops, a fresh batch will be hidden in your next location…

…One feature that makes Big City Adventure: New York City particularly fun to play is its Quick Continue option, which lets you skip the tallying up of your end-of-level bonus and just get on with playing. If you want to take the moment to exult in your point-accruing success, you can, but if you’d rather just bank the points and get on with things, the Quick Continue option is a fantastic and welcome shortcut…

…The construction is repetitive (hidden object level, puzzle, hidden object level, puzzle), but there are so many levels that it’s a game you’re going to want to take your time with, anyway.
