For many people “gas chambers” represent an awful, desensitized form of killing. Many do not realize that such organized killing still occurs today. Each year, millions of animals are euthanized through this brutal process. Rarely has anything breathing survived a gas chamber but in October 2011, this improbable survival story became a reality for Daniel the beagle in an Alabama gas chamber. Through improbable odds, Daniel was still wagging his tail after the gas chamber that he was locked in killed eighteen other dogs. The animal control officer, lacking the heart to make a second attempt, agreed to put Daniel up for adoption. Daniel was quickly spirited to a foster home in Tennessee where he was named after the Biblical survivor of the lion’s den. Next, with the help of Pilots and Paws, New Jersey based Eleventh Hour Rescue brought Daniel to New Jersey where the Dwyer Family of Nutley adopted him into a forever home. Daniel has taken nicely to the fun-loving life of a dog in a house with four other dogs. However, Daniel has also become quite the celebrity with appearances on local, national, and worldwide news outlets, highlighted by an exciting appearance on Anderson Cooper Live. Such renown has brought Daniel the opportunity to make a difference. Daniel’s adorable face and affable personality have made him a hero dog to thousands of his other canine brothers and sisters as he has become an advocate for shelter adoptions and anti-gassing laws in various state legislatures.

Paralyzed Dachshund Needs New Home – ASAP

I was recently contacted by Lisa from Home For Life Sanctuary which takes in special needs animals. They were contacted by Alex asking if she could take in their paralyzed dachshund. They are unable to at this time because they are full, so she contacted me to see if I knew of anyone who would take in this dachshund named Kilo. I offered to help by sharing on my blogs and Facebook in hopes of finding him a home. If he does not find a home by the end of the month the owners will be putting Kilo to sleep.

Here is what I know:

Kilo is in Minnesota, in a suburb near the Twin Cities. He is 6 years old and has been paralyzed since he was three years old. He is incontinent so he does need to be expressed. He was also badly bitten by another dog and had to have emergency surgery on his trachea (though not sure when this was). He is no spade. Alex, his owner says he is a dog that loves to sit on your lap and will be waiting for you at the door when you come home- happy to see you. He does have a wheelchair, which will go with him, as well as any medical records you may want.

I don’t know how he became paralyzed or why the owners are unable to care for him any longer.

Frankie the Walk N Roll Dog Notecards – We Need Your Help

We’re considering having note cards made up of me after her successful day at the Farmer’s Market late last summer. When I initially posted this on Facebook, etc. it was a big hit – some people even saying it would make a fun note card. So, if we were to offer these for sale, would this be something you’d be interested in? We’d like to gauge the interest and would really appreciate if you could leave a comment if this would be something you’d be interested in. Thank you so much for your help!

The Face Foundation – Financial Aid for Helping Your Pets

My mom and I recently discovered this resource, the Face Foundation and have added it to our resource page, but wanted to share it here too.

Face Foundation: Many sick and injured pets are abandoned or euthanized because their owners are unable to cover the cost of their emergency or critical care needs.

The FACE Foundation provides financial assistance to animal owners who are unable to cover the full cost of their pets’ critical or emergency veterinary care.

If Face Foundation is unable to help you they have also provided a download-able pdf of other financial resources.
