The town of Bern is named after the first animal to be hunted in this area. So now they have a whole area dedicated to Bears along the waterfront. Chris and I enjoyed walking around the town, exploring the area, and heading out with his co-workers for dinner. I spent most of my days going for long walks along the river (discovering even more animals in this "natural" zoo setting) and wandering through the woods surrounding the area.

Unfortunately, I ended up getting sick and the weekend that we returned from Switzerland we just relaxed, listened to music, watched movies, and did puzzles while we house sat Shadow (Morag and David's dog). It was fun to spend the weekend in the countryside outside of Erlangen.

Zurich, Switzerland - November 14, 2009

Check out our photos at: ZURICH, SWITZERLAND

Chris and I headed out on Friday after work for Zurich, Switzerland. Some of our adventures during the drive were:

1. Finding out our GPS was not "finding" us and it was giving us false directions. We are glad that we figured that early on during the drive or else we wouldn't have gone on this adventure.

2. Our drive was very foggy. The weather forecast recently said FOG for 5 days straight. We didn't realize that could be a constant weather pattern until we moved here.

3. As luck would have it FOG - makes is hard to see border crossing signs. As we tried to drive into Switzerland we ended up in the wrong area and had to turn around - that caused us to get pulled over and checked by the guards. But we made it through :)

On Saturday, I went with Rebecca to the American Women's Club to make Christmas cards (Rebecca is so creative) and Chris got the grand tour of Zurich by Bill and Brady.

We knew Zurich was expensive, but Chris was shocked when pizza for lunch for 3 guys and 2 small kids came out to $130. That night Chris and I experienced Fondu. We had never done that before and enjoyed dipping and eating.

The next day we went to a really good brunch. Rebecca found this great brunch place located in a barn / farm. The food was great, we sat at long family style picnic tables, there were toys for kids outside, and live music. We really enjoyed this!

Thanks Rebecca, Bill, and Brady for a great trip to Zurich :)

Karlovy Vary - November 7, 2009

Check out our photos at: KARLOVY VARY, CZECH REPUBLIC

This weekend Chris planned a romantic spa weekend to Karlovy Vary. It is a spa town in the Czech Republic. The river that flows through the center of town is hot mineral spring water (that people like to drink, but more on that subject in the pictures). We stayed at the Hotel Promenada and ate dinner there both nights. We loved the food and really enjoyed eating Quail. We spent Saturday touring around the town and then about 4 hours at a spa swimming in the warm mineral water, taking a bubble bath, and getting aromatherapy massages. On Sunday we went to the town of Loket and toured the castle there. It had a very intense display of the dungeon and torture chambers. They made it pretty realistic (as possible) to experience what it might have been like back in those days. We had an amazing trip and now we have to watch the James Bond movie Casino Royal since they filmed part of the movie here. Enjoy the photos.

Making Dinner for Chris - October 30, 2009

Let's just say that cooking meals in Germany is interesting. But this evening was especially challenging. I set out this afternoon to make Chris Fajita's for dinner. We do this all the time back in the US and we have even done it here in Germany before and it turned out fairly well (but it never does taste 100% like Fajita's). But tonight was a different story.

1. I bought lettuce - nope it turned out it was cabbage

2. I bought Fajita mix - but it smelled funny - then I looked at the ingredient list - the first one should be chilli powder right? Nope the German Fajita mix had curry

3. Finally the salsa tasted like spaghetti sauce

So we had Fajita's with cabbage, curry chicken, and spaghetti sauce - That's how we do Mexican food in Germany :)

Wurzburg, Germany - October 17, 2009

Check out our photos at: WURZBURG GERMANY

We stay pretty busy on the weekends with our adventures. This weekend we went to Wurzburg and had a really good time. We started our trip just walking around town and then we ended up at a really nice cafe (one of my favorites). After that we ran (yes actually ran) up the hill to the palace at the top. We thought we might miss the tour, but it turns out you can pretty much tour the whole place without a guide. So we skipped the guided tour. After that we then ran (yes again) down to the residence because we realized if we got there fast we would make an English tour. We are so glad that we did because it turned out to be one of the best tours I have had in Germany. She was a really good guide that told fun stories and had a pretty good sense of humor. Overall it was a fun day to spend together :)

Mugendorf Pumpkin Festival - October 4, 2009

Check out our photos at: MUGENDORF PUMPKIN FESTIVAL

This is a continuation of our fun surprise weekend in Pottenstein, Germany. These towns are actually located really close to where we live, but it felt like we were so far away. (maybe because we are in Germany :)

We woke up and headed out for some adventures. We stopped by the town of Mugendorf around 10 am and we could see the festival being set up, but we had no idea what was in store. We left there and drove around and toured another castle and we met the current owner.

Then we decided to drive back to the pumpkin festival and we were shocked! The town had exploded with people. I think we were the very last car they let through into the parking lot. We got "rock star" parking and a great spot on the parade route. We got to enjoy all the decorated tractors and carved pumpkins. Now you can enjoy them too!

Frankenweg Hike - October 3, 2009

Check out our photos at: FRANKENWEG HIKE

Chris surprised me this weekend with a fun trip he planned for me. What a great husband. We drove to Pottenstein on Friday evening and ate dinner at a really good restaurant (horseshoe brewery) they actually had vegetables as possible sides (not just potatoes formed every possible way Germans can think of).

Then on Saturday we hoped on a local bus and road about 15 miles away and hiked back. It is so cool hiking here. We didn't have to drive at all.... we just leave in the morning - eat snacks - lunch - and dinner along the hike. The trail goes through castles, canyon areas, and even a cave. YES the hiking trail actually went inside a cave! We loved it! I really like hiking in Europe.

Then on Sunday we saw a pumpkin festival parade (see the next photo album I post :)

German Wedding - September 20, 2009

Check out our photos at: GERMAN WEDDING

We returned from Greece and went straight from Munich to a wedding in Magdeburg (near Berlin). We were excited to finally get our boxes from the US since we had been living out of our one suitcase for 20 days. Unfortunately, the customs office wouldn't release our belongings without more paperwork and all our nice clothing, computers, and belongings were in those boxes. So thanks to Karl and Claudia we had something nice to wear. It was a beautiful wedding, the food was great, and the games were so much fun (German weddings have games that they play after dinner instead of dancing).

Almond and Grape Picking - September 17, 2009

Check out our photos at: GREEK ALMOND AND GRAPE PICKING

This is our last post for Greece - the trip is almost over. The whole time during this trip our home base was Krini because we knew a family at Virginia Tech that is from this town. We were so blessed to get this opportunity to spend time with them at their house and learn more about the Greek culture and way of life than we would have learned otherwise. Plus we got some amazingly fresh meals and had a great time out in the orchards picking grapes and almonds. Chris and I were excited about almond picking. We learned that they have two outer shells and the trees are huge. The water was beautiful and we could see 3 different shades of blue. I loved driving to the beach and on the way we picked up fresh food and fruit and had a picnic on the beach.

I still think the water was too cold in September to go comfortably swimming unless the sun is shining and there is no wind. Our last day on the beach was wonderful!!! We found our own private cove - the roads pushed our rental car to the limit.

Here are some things we learned about Greek beaches:

1. Clothing is optional - and people will just take it all off and just stand right there. Just hanging around in the sun.

2. I liked eating fresh figs and feta cheese. Reminded me of Ratatouille and the different taste sensations.

3. After traveling in so many countries we have learned that Pringles are the safest chip to eat from country to country. They have different flavors, but there is always Original Pringles and they taste the same in each country. Not so with other brands.

3. Ok so those don't seem beach related, but we ate those foods on the beach.

4. The Adriatic Sea up north in Greece is mainly rocky with small pebbles for sand. Bring your water shoes. I wish I had my Keenes - Chris ;)

5. It seems that people spend a lot of time at the beach in Greece. Our host went everyday to the beach and encouraged us to go swimming and spend time on the beach. Greece was very relaxing :)

The best part was that one year ago we departed on our honeymoon and it was fitting that we found our selves in Greece lounging in the sun without a care in the world. Happy second honeymoon Chris :)

GREECE - Mt. OLYMPUS

It was a really cool adventure to climb Mt. Olympus, but tougher than I expected. We started in the evening around 6 PM and hauled as fast as we could go 3 hours straight up the mountain in the rain and dusk/dark.

We then spent the night at Refuge Hut A where there are bunk beds, food, cold showers, and a fire place. The bunk bed rooms are not heated and it gets pretty cold up there - plus we were soaked - so we didn't sleep very well.

The next day we got up early - ate breakfast and hit the vertical climb up the rest of the mountain. It is too dangerous to climb to the top of Mt. Olympus in the rain so we got within 50 meters and turned around at the top of another peak called Scyala (sp?). It was an amazing adventure.

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/FoxFamilyJournal/~3/_vN-3KDZQF4/greece-mt-olympus-september-13-2009.html" title="GREECE - Mt. There are so many old beautiful solidly built bridges that have survived the test of time. The scale of being inside this 3,000 foot deep gorge is breathtaking. There was no water flowing of course, but when the water is flowing it is beautiful and the water is aqua/green. It was a really warm beautiful day and we enjoyed the adventure before we drove to Mt. This was one of my favorite places. We ate dinner here and walked around town to the local monastery on the edge of the Vikos Gorge. The town is built with all the local stone - even the roofs.

Some of the things we learned about traveling in Greece:

1. People drive in the break down lane.

2. The GPS doesn't know about new roads that were built about 10 years ago.

3. The signs in Greece are communicated in both English and Greek - It seriously doesn't help. (see photo).

4. There is spray paint on almost every road sign. There were a lot of stop signs that were unreadable due to spray paint and they were placed too far forward of where you actually needed to stop.

5. We saw tractors parked everywhere. I thought maybe there was a big tractor sale going down and Chris and I could maybe shop around and invest in our own tractor. The dream has been squashed - it was a farmers protest.

6. Even the GPS gets confused while driving around Greece.

Vikos Gorge - Greece - September 12, 2009

Check out our photos at: VIKOS GORGE, GREECE

There is a huge gorge in the northern interior of Greece that we explored and hiked. The gorge is about 3,000 feet deep and 3,600 feet between the rims.We stayed at a great town (Monodhendhri, Greece) on the top of the rim and hiked paths that were right on the edge of the rim along the rock face. The buildings are completely made out of stone - even the roofs. We drove to another town for a nice earlier dinner because we are getting up early for our trip to Greece.

Bolzano, Italy - September 8, 2009

Check out our photos at: BOLZANO, ITALY

- Toured a bountiful street market. This put almost all the farmers markets in the US to shame.
- Visited a cathedral with art fresco's - these are amazing and sometimes a little graphic.
- Museum of the "ice" man and mummification - We saw a frozen man!
- Rented bikes and rode around the city - There was actually bike rush hour!
- Road our bikes to Castle Runkelstein - Castle bumpy rocks
- Ate our farmers market lunch in the courtyard - it was surreal to eat lunch in such an old castle.
- Toured castle Runkelstein that also had fresco's - these were more tasteful and the descriptions were good - there were good stories written in English.
- Biked even more and ate some apples from a tree - that was one of the best apples I have ever tasted. But we got some mean looks from the Italian's - I think we made a mistake thinking the tree was on public property.
- Biked to another set of ruin's made into a mountain art museum by Mesner. We didn't go inside - based on the art we saw. It was a little too modern art for us.
- Drove back to Austria on other incredibly twisty road rising ever higher and higher into barren and extremely steep mountains. These Via Feratta's are so amazing over here in Europe and they are everywhere. Basically it is like rock climbing, but you can clip in to a set route up an exposed rock face. There are some amazing places of exposure and it was awesome and breathtaking.

Sand in Taufers, Italy - September 6, 2009

Check out our photos at: SAND IN TAUFERS, ITALY

(Description by Joanne Fox) - We are bidding our beautiful B&B and our fine hostess goodbye and drove into Italy. At the border we had to wait a ½ hour because it was a one lane road for several miles and the other cars were coming up.

Finally our light was green and we twisted and I mean TWISTED our way down. At the bottom was a lake of emerald color. We arrived in Sand in Taufers to see Castle Taufers. The castle was started in the 12th century and restoration begun just after the 1900's. We walked around the town, first up higher to get a view, and then in the town where there was a fair (great Italian band) and then had some ice cream. The drive to the Dolomites took a bit longer because our GPS gave us a bum steer and we had to go 21 km on a tollway the wrong way before we could turn around. Our B&B is less homey with many rooms but very fine. Our 500 games were fiercely fought and Judi and I are learning to be more aggressive in our bidding. The Italian Dolomites await us tomorrow and are very dramatic!

National Park Hohen Tauern, September 5, 2009

Check out our photos at: NATIONAL PARK HOHEN TAUERN, SEPTEMBER 5, 2009

We then drove up into a ever narrowing valley through one little town after another with their picture perfect Austrian homes hanging with flowers. The incredible waterfalls we saw in the park are a result of melting waters from glaciers. One of my favorite things was a small house someone built under this huge rock - I went up and knocked on the window/door, but no one was home.

We then ate at the same restaurant with the same great food. I think this was my favorite place to eat along the whole trip. The meal I got both nights was served in a wheelbarrow (you can see a picture in the above link).

In the evenings we have been playing several games of 500. It is normally Jason and me/mom (we are a team since I am new to 500) against Chris and dad. It is a fun way to end each evening.

Matrei, Austria - September 4-5, 2009

Check out our photos at: MATREI, AUSTRIA - SEPTEMBER 4-5, 2009

We stayed at a really nice B&B high up on the mountain side outside of Matrei, Austria. After a really great breakfast we drove into Matrei and took a gondola up into the Alps.

It had snowed the night before so we were excited to see the fresh snow and enjoy the wonderful sunshine. I really enjoyed the raspberry picking - Chris and Jason ventured over the barbed wire, the crisp blue skies, the mountain restaurants where you can have sausage, soup, and beer, and time spent hiking with the Fox Family. On the way down we met two really nice women who told us about a beautiful waterfall in the National Park Hohen. So we headed there on our next adventure that day.

Salzburg, Austria September 3-4, 2009

Check out our photos at: SALZBURG, AUSTRIA SEPTEMBER 4, 2009

It was really great how Chris coordinated all the flights. We all got into Munich around noon the next day and it was time for our Fox Family European Adventures to begin (right after we spend an hour working out the GPS situation).

On Friday, September 4th we took the bus into Salzburg and toured a cathedral and castle. Then we drove to Hellbrunn for a water fountain surprise tour. I thought I had escaped the whole tour without getting hit with water and then..... when I had gone under the archway of water and I was watching everyone else go through (and laughing at people using their umbrella's) - I got HIT. The tour guide turned on the spray nozzle right behind me and all the water went squirting up my jacket getting the seat of my pants wet. It was a fun tour and it would be a lot more fun in the heat of the summer and not while it was raining :)

Then we were off to the salt mine tour. The best parts were the rail car transportation into the tunnels, a boat ride across a lake that dissolved the salt so it can be "mined", and then slides that the employees of the mine used to get from one level to the other. It was so much fun to ride those slides - we rode them either two at a time or three at a time. It rained the entire day, but I didn't really notice it since we were having so much fun.

Appalachian Trail Hike - Virginia to Pennsylvania (June 15-19, 2009)

The hike on the AT (Appalachian Trail) from Virginia to Pennsylvania is called the "4 State Challenge". People who are thru-hiking the AT challenge themselves to do it in ONE day. However, I was just out for a week so I did it in 4 days. I started at Keys Gap, VA on Route 9 early on Monday morning when Chris dropped me off before work and hiked to Ed Garvey Shelter in Maryland. It was a 12.8 mile hike on the first day. I loved it. It is so refreshing being out in the woods and enjoying the sun, wind, the smell of the trees, and sounds of nature all around you as you walk through the woods. Since there are a lot of other people thru-hiking the trail right now, there were a lot of friendships to be created along the way. Plus on the very first day I was out on the trail I ran into a couple of guys from NPR that interviewed me for a story they were doing on the AT. Who knows I might get on the "air".

The next day was sunny and beautiful. I hiked 10.9 miles to Dahlgren Campground, where they have hot showers and a restaurant really close by. I had some chicken and the other groups ordered a pizza. We ended up having a bear visit the campground, but no one lost their food or a limb, so it was a good day overall.

On Wednesday, it was rainy and cloudy, but that didn't dampen my spirit just my socks. I hiked to Ensign Cowall Shelter. That was the hardest day yet because the trail got rocky and tough and doing that in the rain and wind was pretty tough. But I pushed through and didn't fall. We were lucky and got to sleep in the shelter that night with the dogs up in the loft. Harlee was a very muddy tick infested mess, but I still love her and let her share my sleeping pad with me.

Thursday was not as wet and we enjoyed the rocky hike towards Pen-Mar Park. The night before a Southbounder (Traveler) kept warning us of all the rocks and how tough it was to hike. I was picturing the Devil's Marble Yard type tough rocks. So when I got there, I was like "these rocks are not tough at all - in comparison". It is all about your expectations.

I split ways with Boone, Blaise, and Sierra (their dog) at Pen-Mar Park. They needed to go into town and I was headed on to the next shelter. I went to Deer Lick Shelters, but it was empty and seemed kind of buggy so I pushed on to the next one called Antietam Shelter. Unfortunately, it was empty too and night was coming on so I had to settle down at this shelter. This was the only night I was on my own. It was a beautiful spot and the sound of tumbling water was soothing and beautiful to sleep to, but I got a spook when a woman with two dogs (that wanted to attack my tent) came around 10:30 pm and told me I couldn't camp there.

In Pennsylvania, there are signs saying that people who are car camping are not allowed, but backpack camping is allowed. Unfortunately, she thought that my car was parked out on the road and that I was a car camper. I had to convince her that I did not have a car and all I had was what was in my backpack. It was a nerve racking experience due to the dogs and her attitude was very abrasive. But we worked through it and I ended up having a wonderful night's sleep anyways to the soothing sound of the creek.

The next day, Friday was my last day hiking. I had a slow relaxing hike to Caledonia State Park where Chris was coming to pick us up after work. We ran into a lot of people that we had met along the trail and talked to more through hikers. It was such a great community of people out there on the trail doing the thru-hikes and they all have such positive wonderful attitudes. I am blessed to have met them all and I am inspired by their ability to push themselves and continue with this endeavor.

We got to Caledonia State Park and relaxed and put our feet in the water and Harlee took a long deserved nap. The views were AMAZING. This mountain is 2,502 meters (8,208 feet) and you can see 6 countries from this mountain. This mountain area is only 1.5 hours outside of Zurich, Switzerland. The gondola ride up to the top was smooth and the facilities were really nice at the top. Although the structure looks very 70's ish era. We brought our own lunch and made a picnic out of the trip.

We decided to put down roots in Switzerland :)

See all our photos and captions from this trip on facebook.

Castles of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany

This weekend we decided to explore small towns and castles in the Saxony-Anhalt region of Germany between Hannover and Magdeburg. I wanted to start off our tour the old fashioned way, driving around and exploring without using the GPS navigator.

Our first adventure was when we tried to drive through the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide area. It was outlined on our map with a dotted red line, but we thought we could drive through the area. I looked it up on google when we got back and it turns out the area is used by the German army. Probably a good idea that we turned around.

We finally found our way to our first castle town, Hundisburg. It was fun driving through backroads and small towns, but the roads were sometimes not clearly marked and after a couple u-turns, I was now convinced that we would use the GPS navigator for the rest of the trip.

HUNDISBURG - I loved the gardens and the beautiful building facade. Behind the palace was an older fortress built 300 years earlier, during the 16th century. The juxtaposition of fortress and palace sections made for such a stark contrast that it didn't seem like they were actually both part of the same complex. After the palace we drove to the outskirts of the town to the ruines of an old church that was built in the 1100's.

FLECHTIGEN - Right before we left on our driving tour of castles the Strobel's recommended that was visit this town. This castle turned out to be pretty cool. They call it the "water castle" because it is built on an island in the lake. Basically it has a really impressive moat for protection (even Chris and I could not storm the Castle).

WALBECK - We had assumed based on our first two castles that we could just drive into town and find this one easily, however, we drove in every direction out from the center of town and could not find it (I even had an old man skowl at me because we were strangers in this small town). Finally Chris stopped and asked directions (it is fun to hear him converse so easily in German). Turns out that we never looked up. The old castle ruine sits on top of a hill overlooking the entire town! The ladies that gave us directions told us to park at the bottom of the hill and walk up to the ruines. The funny thing is that we walked the entire way up on a road that we could have driven and parked at the top. But it was an adventure!

I loved this castle ruine. They have the place set up to host weddings and even yoga classes. How neat would it be to sun salulations in the center of an old church ruine dating back to the 900's.

ALTENHAUSEN - The was last stop on our castle tour. We walked right into the courtyard and entered the castle. It looks like it is being run as a youth hostel/hotel and an orphanage, but no one was at the reception desk. We decided to wandered around inside the castle by ourselves. It felt kind of creepy to be in this huge old building and it felt strange that we never saw anyone. Now it was back home to the Strobel's in Zielitz for a good homemade meal by Fredrich.
