How did you know that the makeup industry was where you wanted to be?

I started working in the theater at a very early age. That's where I first learned theatrical makeup. It just came naturally to me. It doesn't feel like work.

What do you love about working in makeup?

I love working in an industry where i can express my creativity. Also, I work with the most amazing people, brilliant directors and actors. Each job is a whole new experience. I love the challenge.

What are the challenges you have to face working as a freelance artist?

You must be self-motivated. This is a very competitive industry, and no job is ever guaranteed. Also, shows get canceled, and start dates get pushed. You have to be very focused, and very driven. You also need to be thick-skinned and not easily discouraged.

What should someone who is looking to develop a career in makeup know before getting into the business?

It's very competitive, and overly-saturated with brilliant artists. One must really love it. Live it and breathe it!

What inspires you?

A challenging project. Working with brilliant directors and actors is also very inspiring.

What are the most important qualities that a makeup artist can have?

Dedication, flexibility, discipline, punctuality.

What makes you a good artist?

I'm always open to learning new techniques. I'm flexible, I'll do whatever it takes to keep my clients happy.

As Department Head for such films as Avatar, A Christmas Carol and the soon to be released Yellow Submarine and The Adventures of Tin Tin, Tegan Taylor has had to know more than just how to create a character. In the age of digital film and incredible character effects, Tegan has had to be a technical wizard of sorts, understanding not only makeup application, but the technology and skills needed to create digital makeup.

Our Online Editor Christina Farrell recently sat down with The Makeup Show Presenter Valerie Hernandez to discuss her recent photo shoot with Lindsey Lohan. Here is their interview, and the details of the shoot.

"The internet has been buzzing lately about the latest controversial photo shoot with Lindsey Lohan by famed photographer Tyler Shields. Whether or not you like the shots, you cannot disagree that Tyler Shields photographs are outstanding, and make people talk. These dark shoots of Ms. Lohan were taken for Tyler's new book "The Dirty Side of Glamor", and that is just what this is.

One of my dearest friends, Valerie Hernandez created Lindsey's look for the infamous shoot, and passed along the products she used to create the sultry vibe. I am crazy for the smokey eyes and sexy lips that Miss. Valerie did (although I am always impressed with her work, cause she is a brilliant artist!). Here are the details directly from Val:

FACE:

I used the Youngblood illuminator in Golden Sun on her cheekbones.
Topped it with Mary-Lou Manizer from The Balm "This duo product that can be used as a highlighter, shimmer, eyeshadow..etc. Its a perfect pearl shade that gives the skin just enough glow. Super rich in pigment so a little goes a long way. "
Then I used a MAC cream blush in Virgin Isle on the apple of her cheeks and topped that with YB Loose Blush in Sherbert.
I used the Warmth Hi-Def Powder by Youngblood to finish her off. "This powder is the best High Definition powder on the market!"

EYES:

Shiseido Cream Black Khol pot all over her lid and underneath, smudged it out with a bronze cream pot by MAC.
Set that with a dark velvet shimmer by Inglot.
Lots of Mascara called Blackout by Youngblood. "Im obsessed with the brush!"
Groomed her brows with Lorac brow wax in Brunette

LIPS:

Finally, I used OCC Lip Tars in Barely Beige and grand finale was Liptar NYFW. "Lindsey loved the lip tars so much that I let her take mine!"

My dear friend, Celeb Makeup Artist and MAKE UP FOR EVER ALLIANCE member James Vincent recently recreated Joan Jett’s sultry make up look for the New York premiere of “The Runaways” Keeping with her rock n’ roll roots, Joan wore a classic yet modern smoky eye. James used MAKE UP FOR EVER products to create Joan’s smoking hot red carpet look.

Of the look, James says this: “the perfect Joan Jett eye takes subtlety, persistence and an understanding of what’s sexy.” Below, my dearest James shares with ThisThatBeauty a breakdown of how to get your Joan Jett on. I suggest you hustle your tail into your local Sephora, gather a few MAKE UP FOR EVER products, and recreate the look for your next night out. Its a classic look that exudes subtle sex appeal!

Completion:

James kept the skin glowing and gorgeous with Make Up For Ever HD Elixir to add moisture to and perfect the skin.
He then applied a small amount of Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Foundation #117, which provided a great canvas, as well as the new HD Invisible Cover Concealer for light, luminous, natural coverage, and a touch of HD Microfinish Powder to keep Joan looking polished all night.

Eyes: “The eyes are Joan’s most famous feature and she knows exactly what she wants to do to draw attention but still keep the look modern and fashionable,” says Vincent.

Start with Make Up For Ever Eye Shadow #35 from brow to lash to create the perfect base.
Next, sweep Make Up For Ever Diamond Powder #11 gets across the brow bone for a beautiful highlight, and Make Up For Ever Eye Shadow #13 to bring depth to the crease.
Use the same shadow to line the top and bottom lashes for soft diffusion of the liner, which gives depth and drama and keeps the hard-edged liner look smoky and sexy.
MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Eyes #0L is the perfect black pencil to apply inside the eye and along the top and bottom lash lines.
Then, apply a bit of Aqua Eyes #2L to add a rich, brown warmth to the look and keep it from looking hard and typical.

The Powder Group founder Michael DeVellis took time out to answer a few questions about the Makeup Industry, On Makeup Magazine and The Makeup Show with Examiner Beauty Expert Candice Jackson. Here is a portion of their interview; the interview in its entirety can be viewed here.

CJ: How long have you been in the makeup industry?

MD: 18 years

CJ: That's great! What made you choose this industry as a profession?

MD: I was working with MAC Cosmetics in Retail Management and was asked to take on the project of developing the MAC PRO line which led to the development of the Artist Relations Dept at MAC. After nearly ten years, I wanted to expand the reach of the type of work I was doing to include the entire industry. That is when I started The Powder Group.

CJ: What made you start the Powder Group?

MD: The lack of a broader focus on the community of professional makeup artistry. There were so many options for those in the field of hair styling..and so little for makeup artists.

CJ: And how about On Makeup Magazine?

MD: The lack of a solid, artistry driven publication that focused on the art and career of makeup artistry. Other publications were either all Special FX, or hair and salon based. These didn’t appeal to me as a reader and I wanted to put out a publication that celebrated the beauty and art aspects of the industry.

CJ: That's awesome! Have you thought about starting your own product line?

MD: I’ve started a few for other companies, and yes have thought about starting one through The Powder Group. But with the selection of amazing brands that we have as our clients for The Makeup Show and On Makeup Magazine – I’m not sure the industry needs yet another line when there are so many great ones out there.

CJ: Who are some of your favorite makeup artists?

MD: There are so many amazing artists that we work with at The Powder Group and The Makeup Show and On Makeup Magazine, there is no way to choose one. Every artists that we work with has special things about them that stand out and inspire us.

CJ: What are some things that inspired you to be a part of the Makeup Artist Industry?

MD: The passion of the artist. The commitment of the professional makeup artist that it takes to decide to pursue a career where success is so relative and the struggle to make it so constant.
It is so gratifying to be able to play a small part in the growth and development of so many pros who are so driven by their craft.

CJ: What products are a must have for Professional Makeup Artists?

MD: There are many important products that every makeup artist should have in their kit. But more important that having the right product, is having the right reasons for being in the career, having the right attitude, having the support of a community and knowing where you want to end up so you can develop a strong path to get there.

CJ: Good advice. Do you have any recommendations or other advice for aspiring makeup artists?

MD: Yes absolutely. Don’t take any days off. Understand your entire industry with passion and commitment. Create a path for yourself that is always clear and in the back of your head as you make important decisions about the work you do and the direction your work takes. Attend every pro artist focused event that you can in order to stay on top of your industry and to create strong bonds to the global community. Don’t make excuses for not being able to be your best.

CJ: So, with no days off do you have any hobbies or interests other than your work in the makeup industry?

MD: Of course. There are the somewhat predictable ones of course like travel and art. Theater is a big interest as well, and photography has always been a passion. One of the best things about publishing On Makeup Magazine is that I can find ways of incorporating my other interests into the magazine and keeping me entertained along the way.

THE KELLY GLEASON SCHOLARSHIP

The Powder Group and Make-Up Designory are pleased to announce their co-sponsorship of The Kelly Gleason Scholarship for the Makeup Arts 2010.
The scholarship is an annual award presented by The Powder Group, and Make-Up Designory is proud to be the first partner of this very special program. The scholarship has been introduced to identify those who are dedicated and motivated to enhance their professional skills and become the next generation of professional makeup artists.

This scholarship has been created in honor of makeup artist and Local 798 President Kelly Gleason. Kelly was a talented and popular makeup artist who spent more than twenty years working on some of the most memorable television and film productions in recent history. She was also a teacher and mentor to many in the professional makeup artist industry. In 2007, her family and many fans lost Kelly after a long and courageous fight with cancer. The scholarship has been created to celebrate Kelly's life and her passion for her craft of makeup artistry.

The Kelly Gleason Scholarship for the Makeup Arts in its partnership with Make-Up Designory will consist of a $10,000 award to be applied toward any Make-Up Designory program at their New York or Burbank campus, and will be awarded to one person who is looking to further their education in the area of makeup artistry. The winner will be announced in the Fall issue of On Makeup Magazine and through the online and social networking resources of The Powder Group and Make-Up Designory.

To Enter: Entrance is open to anyone over the age of 18 with a high school completion or its equivalence. Entries will be reviewed by a panel of industry experts and members of the Make-Up Designory and The Powder Group executive teams.

Entries must be received no later than July 1, 2010, and may be received by email to register@thepowdergroup.com with the subject heading "Kelly Gleason Scholarship" or by regular mail to The Powder Group 315 Seventh Avenue 6B New York, NY 10001.

The entry must include a letter of introduction, all pertinent contact information including email, phone number, street address and social networking site details. Entries will also include a statement, limited to 500 words, of why the applicant wishes to receive the scholarship. Entrants will be judged solely on their written expression and no previous artistry experience will be required to receive the award.

Entries must follow the above guidelines or will not be considered for entry.

Legal: Entry into the competition will require meeting the enrollment pre-requisites for Make-Up Designory. Enrollment requirements: each individual must be over the age of 18 by the time they begin classes, and must have proof of high school completion or its equivalent. International students must meet the requirement of qualification for an M-1 Student Visa, under the regulations of the U.S. Department of State. The winner must be able to provide confirmation of requirements within 30 days of the announcement as the winner, or the Scholarship will go to the runner-up. The Scholarship may be used at either the Los Angeles or New York campuses, however the student must start classes by December 31, 2011, and may be used towards tuition and supplies for any Course or Program at Make-Up Designory - up to $10,000 USD. Louie Zakarian has helped to create some of the most memorable characters on Saturday Night Live (SNL) for over 16 years. As Department Head, Zakarian has worked with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry. For his first The Makeup Show event, Zakarian will discuss the inner workings of SNL and demonstrate some of the key techniques and some of pop cultures most memorable parodies.

How have you kept your career growing in a challenging economy?

What makes a good assistant?

Being tuned in to the artists needs, whatever they may be. Being aware of everything going on around you on set, while also staying on the sidelines. Your time will come (!) but this moment belongs to the person you are assisting.

Is there a project you have worked on that you are especially proud of?

I love my TV show, So You Think You Can Dance. The team of artists I get to work with are so amazing, they teach me something every day and constantly astonish me with their abilities. And they are hilarious.

What are you working on today?

A bunch of random, slightly absurd projects, as usual.

How did you get started in makeup?

I was the makeup crew chief for my high schools theater program. I wanted to do drama, but I always had a slight case of stage fright. This was the next best thing. And I loved it…. I think I took it a bit too seriously at times.

What is the biggest mistake a makeup artist can make?

I don’t know about anyone else, but I have a tendency to get ahead of myself. I always want the end results as fast as possible, when it’s really the journey that matters.

How did you know that you wanted to be a makeup artist?

After several years of a gypsy lifestyle, I woke up one day and said, “I want to be a makeup artist.” I packed my bags and moved to LA. I always knew if I were open to it, the universe would let me know what I should be doing.

What does "community" mean to you?

Community to me is a place where acceptance and support comes with no judgment or personal definition. Where we all realize there is enough for everyone if we live properly and give of ourselves freely.

Can you tell us about a change you have made in your career?

Lately I’ve been focusing on getting back to basics. A soft hand can make such a difference.

Is it important to do both hair and makeup in the industry?

I think it is, and I say this because I am totally lacking in hair skills. I have had short hair for the last 6 years, so even a blow out takes me longer than it should. I’m working on it ;)

You've got to work on your career every day...network, network, network. The jobs will not find you...you find the people who are hiring/booking and let them know how much they want you. It's a constant hustle, but the reward is a steady cash flow and exposure that leads to new and better work.

Is there a project you have worked on that you are especially proud of?

I designed makeup for many of the "challenges" on Season 2 of "She's Got The Look", the reality show that searches for the next supermodel over the age of 35.

What are you working on today?

I'm writing curriculum and a lesson plan for a new 30 hour (Beginner) Makeup Training format.

How did you get started in makeup?

I "painted' real makeup on mannequins for displays at Bloomingdale's NYC.

Arrogance. You might be a brilliant artist, but no one wants to work with a horrible attitude and drama.

How did you know that you wanted to be a makeup artist?

It challenged and satisfied my creative nature and offered instant gratification... a mighty potent benefit package for any artist.

What does "community" mean to you?

A group of people who share (share being the key word) a love and passion for their vocation.

Can you tell us about a change you have made in your career?

Going back to corporate cosmetics after being away for almost 20 years. After years of working on-set, being back in an office was quite a culture shock . I'm still adjusting..lol!

Is it important to do both hair and makeup in the industry?

Absolutely. Unless you're working on a union assignment, it's very possible you will be asked if you do both. Your answer will often decide whether or not you get the booking. You don't need to do cuts or chemical processes, but you definitely should be able to style hair, work with styling tools and create simple up-dos.

How have you kept your career growing in a challenging economy? Aside from owning my own business/ MKC Beauty Academy which keeps me busy and also consulting as a beauty consultant for many fortune 500 companies.As you can see I have always kept my hands in the cookie jar.. I always keep my eyes on the prize..

I was working with Mel Gibson a few years back and we had to do a MU test and we used the legendary MU Master, Robert Schiffer's Make up office at Paramount studios. I'll never forget what Mr.Schiffer said to me that really resonated even til this day. He said, Margaret do not get pigeon holed in this biz. Keep your horizon's open to different things and never fear to take risks.. In the long run you will not regret it..

What three traits does a great makeup artist need to have? The three most important traits a great make up artist must have are:

What makes a good assistant?
In my opinion the best assistants I've had are the ones that are extremely focused and can think for me on the spot when I am not there. Most importantly to get the work done above and beyond. Another important trait is that they need to show extreme effort of hunger and drive. Be there before anyone and wants to stay till the last person leaves the set..

Is there a project you have worked on that you are especially proud of?
I have to say I have been blessed with so many amazing projects I was able to be a part of in my 35 years years of doing Make Up.. But one that I can say is the most memorable and life changing one is when I worked with Audrey Hepburn for a Unicef tour.. We traveled for 3 days together and she was certainly one of my greatest teachers of life.. The best part of it was we all worked on the project for free.. It was amazing!!!

I also can not leave out when I saw my Asian Beauty book in the window of Barnes and Nobel for the very first time.. That was beyond one of my proudest moments.. You have no idea how many people told me that I could never get a book deal.. Thank God I never stop believing in myself...

What are you working on today?
I am the new Creative Director for i nuovi cosmetics. We are in the process of launching it in the US at the Makeup Show. We will also be launching in Europe very soon. Also I am about to release Asian Beauty as an e- book in the coming months.

How did you get started in makeup?
It's a very very long story, but in a nut shell I was 15 years old and I graduated high school. I made a deal with my parents and for some crazy reason they said OK. So off I went to Milan with my Guardian/ friend Douglas Keeve who was at that time a wonderful fashion photographer (who is now the award winning director of Unzipped/Seamless/ and Gramercy Park Hotel to name a few..)
I lived in Milan for 5 years, traveled the globe like crazy, lived 3 years in New York, and then back to LA... and the rest is history....

What is coming next for your line?
Launching it here in the US.. It is a full Professional spectrum color line.

Tell us about your newest product?
It is a full Professional spectrum color line. It is made of the highest quality. Amazing colors as well foundations etc..

Why do makeup artists love your line?
We have a cult following of amazing Pro Artist as well celebrities that loved i nuovi when it was here in the US 10 years ago.. Kevin Aucoin, Pat Magrath, Francesca Tolot, Joanne Gair and Sharon Gault, just to name a few. Also Christina Aguilera and Courtney Cox, Camron Diaz, Sandra Bullock all loved the line too.
They were all were constant users of the line.

What is the biggest mistake a makeup artist can make?
I am also a Life/Success Coach and one of things I teach my students at MKC on this particular issue are very obvious..
Not being on time and not being constant with their professionalism. And do average GREAT!!

What it comes down to is you have to be driven and work your butt off..

How did you know that you wanted to be a makeup artist?
I always knew since I was a little girl.. Both my parents were producers. My Dad was a music producer and my mom produced TV commercials.. I was always surrounded with fashion and beauty.. It was in my blood..

What does "community" mean to you?
You're only as good as the people around you.. A group of people living around you with common values..

Can you tell us about a change you have made in your career?
One of my greatest change I made in my career was when I decided to take some time off the set and open MKC Beauty Academy.. No matter what it takes as a business, in the long run it is all about paying it forward and helping others achieve their dreams..It was one of my best decisions I had ever made in addition to foster/adopting children..

I go to bed every night counting my blessings no matter how much hard work it takes..

Is it important to do both hair and makeup in the industry?
It does not hurt.. Your chances of getting the job is much greater than those who just does one or the other.. Also Airbrushing is another medium that I feel is essential to know.

How have you kept your career growing in a challenging economy?The economy is fine. Line's that weren't struggling before, aren't struggling now. Lines that were, are dying off or scrambling. This is prime time for emerging businesses to stake their claim in an industry that's looking for alternatives and fresh perspectives. At present, "sure bets" are losing their hold on the business, leaving opportunities for new competitive talent. Take advantage of that opportunity to create a presence.

humility, focus, perseverance

pay attention, anticipate, respect

Is there a project you have worked on that you are especially proud of?

i'm proud of every project that I work on, it's profile doesn't matter.

What are you working on today?

as always, I'm working on angles to promote the business of "Jon Hennessey-Makeup Artist" and NOBASURA Artist Management..in that order.

How did you get started in makeup?

a talented girlfriend, an article on Stephane Marais in Vogue, the introduction to M.A.C as a creative entity prior to it taking over the cosmetics industry....these things together I owe a great deal to.

Why did you start your makeup line?

This line is in existence because the demand was there, first and foremost. Artists and clients have been soliciting my advice in regards to narrowing the focus when it comes to the selection of product. Every individual has a unique identity and creative presence....it's time to explore and define it....and when necessary, assist in it's evolution.

What is the biggest mistake a makeup artist can make?

Confidence and arrogance lay together in the same bed. Don't wake up on the wrong side of that bed.

How did you know that you wanted to be a makeup artist?

I initiated a career in this industry when i was 19 years old. I liked the idea of working behind the scenes in the entertainment and visual communication industries because I was too shy to be in front of the camera...and to be honest, I needed to hustle to generate a revenue stream to support myself rather than patiently working toward an end-game.
As far as being a makeup artist is concerned, it came from watching a 17 year old girl (when I was 19) painting her face in a way that blew my mind....technical and transformative...I owe a lot to Stacey Thomas.

What does "community" mean to you?

Community is about acknowledging that none of us do this alone. This is not an isolated experience, it's a collaborative one. Big business or independent, we need each other to survive and to drive the industry forward. As independents, we need each other to share knowledge, create game plans and define the future of the industry.

Can you tell us about a change you have made in your career?

Every day is a change in my career. As artists unless we continue to evolve, we run the risk of becoming irrelevant. Embrace change.

Is it important to do both hair and makeup in the industry?

No. Ask Pat to do a finger wave. Ask Guido to create a smoky eye. As artists we need to have a perspective and opinion on the overall visual. If as a make up artist, you can't provide an opinion on styling or hair, you're not doing your job. Focus, specialize, raise the caliber of the work, but keep your eyes on the big picture.

The "recession" is a great opportunity for clients to try to package both disciplines into one rate, but as we all know, each is an unique art form. Painting and Sculpture are individual mediums.

Having said that, as a makeup artist, I'm capable of creating a few beautiful hairstyles, but I have too much respect for friends that are accomplished hairstylists to call myself one.

How have you kept your career growing in a challenging economy?
Despite the current state of the economy my brand continues to flourish. I have recently launched 13 new lip colors, 4 new glosses, a new concealer, and the core EVE PEARL TEAM is growing. I owe a great deal of my success to my ability to quickly adapt and adjust to the needs of my customer. My line is just that, "mine". It is not private label so I have total control over everything from formula, to texture, ingredients, color choices, etc. I am able to quickly adapt and implement changes to meet the needs of my customer base. The recent launch of my new Dual Salmon Concealer Treatment is a perfect example of a product that I was able to go into the lab and create in response to customer feedback. I am able to to deliver a product that satisfies the need of the customer who is in between two concealer shades.

I also owe a good deal of my succeeds to my ability to embrace social media (pretty early on) and use it to connect with my audience and advance the EVE PEARL brand. With over 19,000 subscribers and 84 videos, I have one of the most successful beauty brand channels on YouTube. I use YouTube and my website (evepearl.com) to demonstrate makeup looks, launch products, promote special offerings, etc. My website and YouTube give me direct access to my customer which allows me to act very quickly on their suggestions and feedback! I am also very active on Twitter. It is a great way to connect with and engage followers of my brand.

What three traits does a great makeup artist need to have?
In order to be a great makeup artist you need:

1) Skill - You must posses some degree of natural talent. In addition, you must constantly hone your skills through ongoing training and learning.
2) Passion/ Desire - You must have an intense love of your craft.
3) Business Acumen - If you are going to be a professional makeup artist, then you must treat your craft professionally....otherwise it's just a hobby. Always be professional. Arrive on time and complete the task at hand. Have a plan to grow your business/brand. Write a business plan. If you don't know where to start, take a beginner's business course to learn the fundamentals. Get a mentor or several mentors. Learn from vets in the industry. Take the business of makeup very seriously...Oh, and have fun!

“This year’s Golden Globes beauty was consistent with the stars showing a healthy, clean and pretty look. With the rain coming down most stars did not take a chance with the smokey eye and focused on spring fashion reflected in whimsical and fun colors for the lips and eyes.” For this year's show, celebrity makeup artist Joanna Schlip worked with Jillian Michaels from TV's The Biggest Loser. With the rain coming down, Joanna took no chances for streaked stars and used only waterproof make up.

Golden Globes 2010 Beauty Trends: From Expert James Vincent

Thanks to the wonderful interview by Charu Suri of the beauty blog Butterfly Diary, we are able to take a look at the makeup trends from this years Golden Globes. Here is her interview with Director of Artistry James Vincent:

We saw ruffles, lilac gowns, shimmery makeup and loose curls. The main trend takeaway from the Golden Globes is a focus on the romantics and hints of glint, not to mention the strong red/ coral lipstick.

James Vincent, Director of Artistry of The Powder Group and The Makeup Show says, “Celebrities seek out professional stylists to keep it safe and to avoid seeing themselves in the worst dressed section of the tabloids, but the lack of risk taking has made makeup seem almost mundane. Makeup artists have had to work harder to find colors, textures and applications that seem soft and natural and still stand out, separate their client from the pretty pack, and stand up to the scrutiny of the camera, the carpet, and media critique,”.

Fan favorites like Penelope Cruz, Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock make more natural makeup look modern with their use of blush and bronzer to bring a glow to the cheeks. Kate Hudson and Marion Cottilard were two exquisite examples of the natural look whose sixties inspired nude, camel colored lips were made seductively sexy when paired with a soft, subdued smokey eye.

The red lip was the scene stealer of the night with the regular red-carpet risk takers like Cameron Diaz and Maggie Gyllenhal making the scarlet lip a staple for fashion forward women and January Jones and Jennifer Morrison made the red lip look luscious and exciting.

“My favorite feature of the night was the comeback of the coral lip. Chloe Sevigny, Rose Byrne and Kate Winslet wore soft, creamy corals and created lip looks that were natural enough for everyday and at the same time both elegant and unexpectedly showing women that natural need not necessarily be boring.”

By now we have all heard of the devastating situation caused by the earthquake in Haiti.
We have also been tweeted and facebooked many times about how we can help.

We may also have - in the midst of our feelings of empathy and compassion for those effected by this unimaginable tragedy - felt that we are having a tough enough time ourselves right now and that as much as we'd like to help, we are unfortunately not in a position to do anything given our own personal financial situation right now.

We at The Powder Group understand how difficult this year has been financially for so many in our community - artists, brands, educators alike - and have also been working hard just to stay afloat.

That said - we hope that each and every one of us can take the time today to consider how lucky we are and how good we have it considering the difficult, insurmountable times that are ahead for the people of Haiti. We implore each of you in the Global Makeup Community to do whatever you can - as little or as much as that may be - to help the cause and make a difference today.

The proceeds of each text donation will support the ongoing efforts to serve the victims of the recent horrific earthquake that has left thousands dead and many more without adequate food, clean water or shelter.

-Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie donated $1 million to Doctors Without Borders to support

-Morgan Stanley gave $1 million to Red Cross
