"what they’re really fighting is the mundane, trying to create music and community that isn’t boring"

REVIEW: Foot Village’s “Anti-Magic”

The album cover consists of a naked man ramming a rocket through an alien that is wearing Earthly Nike tennis shoes, and close to the naked man is a naked woman awaiting the end to the battle. What battle of this is uncertain, but apparently when Sistah Souljah proclaimed “we are at war”, the collective that is Foot Village made it their own and decided to put it in music form.

Anti-Magic (Upset! The Rhythm) could be described as a cross between Parliament, Sun Ra, Pre and Boredoms, and together that creates a very tribal sound with a massive wall of percussion and feedback, mixed up with screaming at high levels that at first listen may sound incredibly chaotic. There is organization in that chaos, and that’s where one will find the genius in what they do, even if what they do comes off as spontaneous noise (there are some very progressive moments within the music, they seem to enhance the trippiness everyone knows and loves.) The inside of the gatefold cover shows various members of the Foot Village (could be two people, could be six, could be a thousand) battling for some kind of supremacy or territorial occupation, but I think with tracks like “Crybaby”, “Chicken And Cheese 2″, and “Death of The Endless”, what they’re really fighting is the mundane, trying to create music and community that isn’t boring. The cover also depicts a place of solace, one that offers Topless Coffee and Bottomless Pizza? Are these guys serious? Perhaps not, but what they appear to be is fun, having fun in their spontaneity that is sure to freak out a lot of people who dare be in their path.

This is what Anti-Magic sounds like, a freak out, so if you honor the unknown ways of Suzy Creamcheese, you will love to taste Foot Village’s flavor. It’s also safe to say this is more original than 99 percent of what you’ll hear on the radio at this very moment. Dig in their Splenda.

Operation: Restore Maximum Freedom IX
PHOTOS BY JULIA MARINO » Somewhere along the veteran biker routes of northern California pulses the thundering heart of the central valley’s DIY music crowd. Tucked loudly and proudly behind Plainfield Station, a random dive north of Davis in rural Yolo County, the local independent radio station KDVS 90.3FM hosts the biannual, non-profit music festival Operation: Restore Maximum Freedom (O:RMF).

Here, distortion pedals and anti-corporate ideals cut with the same edge as the bikers and brews that make the scene. Founded on a democratic and diverse approach to music, the festival has never featured the same band more than once since ORMF’s start in 2005. Quintessentially, the variety of artists include the Gamelan Ensemble, a group of drum, gong, metallophone and xylophone players that perform songs from the Sunda region of the island of Java; the Sacramento hip-hop collective, Delorean; and fathers of Australian punk, X.

Largely, the sound skews more toward punk and experimental, with the inclusion of many west coast bands rounding robin from stage to grassy horseshoe patch. Highlights include Davis’ Mucky the Ducky that combine unstructured high voltage instrumentation with sweat dripping percussion, and Los Angeles’ Foot Village, an audio colonoscopy created from four drum kits and one speakerphone.

Bobb Bruno, metal master and Best Coast memeber, makes one scary-axx remix of Foot Village!

From Einstein Music Journal

Brain Miller from Foot Village just sent me this brutal black metal remix of ‘Grace’s Death’, remixed by Best Coast’s Bobb Bruno. There’s no images to cause any madcap controversy, but if there was they’d probably broadcast Grace’s eyes being gouged out by a lonely night walker dressed in a long black trench coat, before raising a bayonet above his head and viciously slashing her to pieces like in a sadistic Chinese horror film. It’s even scarier than the original song, which appeared on Foot Village’s 2009 album Anti-Magic. On the original version Grace screams like a wilting flower dying a long agonising death. The boys add a Gothic chant and then the song turns celebratory, dishing up some heavy metal guitar riffs and the Village’s customary multi-percussive drum beats. Bruno’s mashed all that together and the result is pretty fucking devilish. You’ve been warned.

3 of the four citizen/drummers of Foot Village sent us these answers to our questions in this next installment of our q and also a series.

q: What is the last song you (really) heard?

CITIZEN ROWAN: My Bathroom is a Private Kind of Place by American Standards (wfmu link, follow it). It’s a wonderful song about a woman who can only be herself in the privacy of the bathroom. Ridiculously captivating.

CITIZEN LEE: Miley: Party in the USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CITIZEN KINSMAN: Bragging Party (mp3) by The Amps … although if people want to see just how silly my listening taste is, I am a last.fm addict.

q: What is your favorite food?

CITIZEN ROWAN: Cheeses, all of them.

CITIZEN LEE: Anything with the a pre-chewed consistency: Bean and Cheese burritos being number 1!

CITIZEN KINSMAN: A tuna melt, but it has to be perfect. I haven’t had
a perfect one since the 90s.

q: What is your favorite band to see live?

CITIZEN ROWAN: A++ (Grace’s other band) or Captain Ahab

CITIZEN LEE (aka Grace): Realicide and Captain Ahab for sure.

CITIZEN KINSMAN: Captain Ahab. Solid but still unpredictable. I also prefer my live music hyperactive and my home listening mellow.

q: What is your favorite venue in NYC (if applicable)?

CITIZEN LEE: Hmmm, only been to two and one i can remember the name: Death by Audio. I guess it’s favorite by default! Is it not cool to reference CBGBs? (ed. note: too soon).

CITIZEN KINSMAN: Death by Audio. The audience made me feel all metro.

q: OK, President Obama appoints you as the first Secretary of Culture, to whom do you give your first grant?

CITIZEN ROWAN: Jim Smith, so he can buy the building that houses The Smell from the owner that will surely sell it to some greedy developer in the next few years.

CITIZEN LEE: This is a really tough question. There are so many people doing amazing things, it’s hard to say just one group/person has priority over another. I think instead of one grant, I would create a collaborative made up of really rad and super smart people. Then I would create a list of priority actions like: environment (including environmental justice), social reform, urban planning, arts, FOOD!, and maybe a Crazy Idea category that could include stuff like wacky fringe science and space travel. And then I would build a totally earth friendly ship and once month outta the year, this collaborative would sail around the world and come up with really amazing solutions to some of our problems…maybe even silly things like whats going on the next stamp. By the time we docked at home, we would have all these great to-do lists, totally shovel ready. Of course, there would live webcams all over the ship so the world can witness the process.

CITIZEN KINSMAN: Myself, I’ve been waiting for this opportunity for years! Besides, I got to behave like a real politician or I might lose my job!

q: Anything we should know about your latest project (whatever that might be)?

CITIZEN ROWAN: I have a weekly radio show in Los Angeles that specializes in underground experimental music and surreal treasures from past eras and far-away lands. Archives found at: http://www.kxlu.com/blogs/voiceofreason.htm

CITIZEN LEE: I am going to make lounge pillows with all my leftover fabrics. MMM, and I am starting a new band with Kristy of Lil’ Pocketknife and K.I.T., and Margo of I.E. That’s going to rule so hard!

CITIZEN KINSMAN: We’re still doing tons of Foot Village stuff (and getting kinda soul inspired lately), but I’ve also been making super mellow drone music inspired by the cold tech-capitalist 80s…. that’s under the name Back To The Future The Ride and my first release is free online. BTW, Citizen Lee should call her new band THE BEACH GIRLS.
