Kill It Kid

Formed for little over a year, Kill It Kid make for a stand-out proposition in today’s musical climate, drawing comparison at times to Mumford & Sons, Tom Waits, Frank Zappa and Zeppelin. Fronted by the gorgeous two-part vocal harmonies of lead singers Chris Turpin and Stephanie Ward, the intimate nature of the songs is rendered all the more powerful by the understated interplay between the pair. Buttressed with strings, keys and slide guitar, Kill It Kid blend delta blues, roots and blistering, unapologetic rock’n’roll to powerful effect, recalling Gomez and The Raconteurs while their diverse influences ensure they sound very much their own band. Aged between 20 and 22, the band are in possession of a musical wisdom beyond their years, and it’s a surprising and wonderful moment when one first hears Chris’ voice.

Forming at university, the seed of the band developed from vocalist Chris Turpin’s solo gigs, at which he was occasionally joined by drummer Marc Jones and bassist Adam Timmins. Over time, the band was expanded, settling on it’s current line up by February 2008, and, following a tip off John Parish (PJ Harvey, The Eels) was put in touch with the band electing to record a 4 track ep of songs with the band which became their debut.

The new single and forthcoming album is produced, mixed and recorded by Ryan Hadlock (Johnny Flynn, The Strokes, The Gossip) and was recorded in Seattle, at the same studio Fleet Foxes laid down their debut. Already they have supported Ipso Facto, The Virgins, Phoebe Killdear from Nouvelle Vague and Pete and the Pirates.

Victeam DJs and Simian Mobile Disco

Simian Mobile Disco are an English production and remix team that were formed from the ashes of Simian in 2005 its members are James Ford and Jas Shaw. In addition to his work with Simian Mobile Disco, James Ford is a producer and has worked bands such as the Arctic Monkeys, Peaches and Klaxons. Simian Mobile Disco are also part of the group of DJ's knwn as DJs Victeam who open Bugged Out parties in Italy. Victeam have also opened for Chemical Brothers and at Bugged Out Milan.

Bristol Streetart

In the area of St Werburghs in Bristol there is a tunnel that is used to show off the local talent of street artists. The tunnel is situated underneath the local rail lines and is the only way into this unusual and quirky area, with a pub, cafe, city farm and a load of self build houses this is a really interesting area. There is an ever changing cycle of artists spraying there latest pieces only for the next artist to come along and do his piece a couple of weeks later. Here is a snap shot of this tunnel at any particular moment, July 09.

Radio Clit

Euro beat doctors Radio Clit are Johan Karlberg and Etienne Tron, whose partnership first hatched into the world as an Internet radio show broadcasting out of London a couple of years back. Their mix of house, disco, B-club, grime and just about everything else. Later they made they name with podcasts, and DJing at club nights such as Hollertronix in Paris with Diplo and MIA and the Vice pub, The Old Blue Last in London.

Curently The Very Best (Esau Mwamwaya and Radio Clit) album is out in September and their single with Vampire Weekend is out in July in the US and a bit laters here in the UK.

Roots Manuva @ Gladstonbury

The vast and impressive structure of the Tempelhof Airport, Berlin gave a perfect backdrop for the Fly53 trade stand which made an impression on the Sport & Street Hall, Fly53 in our outspoken manner and made sure that no one missed us! The stand replicated the new Fly53 House Of Fraser ‘Shop in Shop’ fit and launched the campaign imagery. In true Fly53 style there was endless amounts of beer to feed the thirsty hoards melting in the sweltering heat and scantily clad models hanging out on the stand, leaving everybody in need of more beer!

Broken Records, consists of no less than seven multi-instrumentalists from Edinburgh, who have been enjoying copious amounts of praise and admiration over the past three years since their formation.

Devil’s Gun

They have been together for less than two years, but the twisted fusion of electro, breakbeat, house and sleazy synth-rock that Devil’s Gun produce in their underground East London lair, has already helped them secure a fierce reputation on the UK’s live circuit, as well as at national press and radio… And all this before releasing an album. Now, after a year of solid gigging and all-night studio sessions, the band is about to let fly with their debut album, backed up by tours and festival slots throughout 2009 and beyond that will see their music heard by a far larger audience. You have been warned.

The band’s life began after vocalist Jagga had been working with production cohorts Olly and Jay on separate projects, but the trio soon realised that their influences and styles would be put to better use working towards a common cause. After the introduction of drummer and Manumission resident percussionist Don Bastardo, and guitarist Adam Hyde, the set-up was complete and the tracks soon began to pile up on the hard drive. Not content with the confinements of dark studios and sweaty rehearsal rooms, they soon took their show on the road and the response they received couldn’t have been better. By the end of the summer they’d played all over the UK, their live following growing with each gig. To add to this, their demos were soon being played on national radio and the music press was comparing them to the likes of Prodigy and Basement Jaxx. Not a bad year for a band without a record deal.

In 2007 the band set up their own independent label, ‘Eat Electric Records, and their first release, ‘Raising The Beast’, sold out in weeks. Their second sinlge, ‘Gold Dust’, received support on Radio 1, Xfm, Kiss 100, Capital FM and Galaxy, and live sessions on Xfm and Kiss soon followed, all eventually culminating in a full album deal with Bodog Music, home to hip-hop legends DMX and Wu-Tang Clan amongst others. To support their following releases, the band have been touring the UK and Europe, playing at most major festivals, including Glastonbury, Isle Of Wight, V, Get Loaded In The Park and The Electric Gardens Festival, where they were hailed in the press as ‘arguably the best act of the weekend’ by the organisers. With an album due out soon, 2009 could well be the year of the Devil’s Gun…

Buraka Som Sistema

What can we expect from Buraka Som Sistema in 2009?
We’ve got tons of gigs, live shows and DJ sets that are going to take up almost all our time. We got some European shows - in the UK, Germany, Scandinavia, France and Belgium - then we’re going to SXSW, Japan and then back to the States to Coachella. We’re doing a three-week tour in America after Coachella that ends in New York at the Bowery Ballroom that we’re very excited about. That pretty much takes us into the festival season. I don’t think we’ll have any vacations until December. We’re also doing some remixes: a remix for Grayskul on a track that features Sizzla, and a remix that we’re just finishing for Brodinski and Yuksek for a joint project of theirs.

Who else do you think is going to be big in 2009 and why?
We’re working with a kid in Lisbon called DJ Marfox. He’s a really cool producer. Also, Afrikan Boy. We’re going to be doing some stuff with him for his album, to be released in 2009. On our own Lisbon label, Enfuchada, we’re releasing a series of 12”s and they will feature some great kuduro artists. The idea is to pick up some Angolan kuduro songs and collect remixes and re-edits for the releases, maybe leading up to a compilation.

What’s going to be the next exciting genre after kuduro?
I think one thing that’s interesting right now is all the Cumbia stuff from South America. It’s traditional music from Columbia and Argentina that kids are picking up and making into something electronic. At the moment, there are so many different musical reference points across the world that, eventually, major artists and pop artists are going to start picking up on them and doing something about it. So, I think that by the end of 2009, maybe we’ll have Nelly Furtado on a kuduro song. That’s something we want, and I keep mentioning it in interviews because I hope that she’ll read it and agree. “I think that by the end of 2009, maybe we’ll have Nelly Furtado on a kuduro song. What was your favourite memory of 2008?
When Kalaf got arrested in Norway, because he didn’t have his passport and visa straightened out. Eventually we had to get the lawyer involved from the Oya festival that we were playing at. Kalaf was released and we had a huge show at the festival in Olso. It was one of the best gigs we’ve played. It really felt good, after all that struggle, to go onstage and just perform for a huge crowd of people.

What are you enjoying doing the most at the moment?
Playing Wii. Mostly Wii Sports, just all those stupid games that you don’t have to think too much about. That’s been my favourite thing. DJ Riot, he just got a Blackberry last time he went to the States and he’s on a mission to try and get everyone on his Blackberry messenger service. He just talks about that shit every five minutes of his life. I think he’s got Diplo, his girlfriend and our manager, and those are the only three people.

Zombie Disco Squad

Lucas Hunter & Nat Self are Zombie Disco Squad the multi-talented production duo that are taking house music in a new direction. Taking influences from Balie Funk, African rhythms, Baltimore, Hip-Hop, the so-called fidget sound and making it sound fresh. You won’t find any cheesy gimmicks in their records but what you will find are tracks played by some of the most influential DJ’s and clubs around the globe.

Zombie Disco Squad started life in 2006 after putting on nights around London’s pivotal venues such as The Social and Catch. They made their name with regular mixtapes, which toured the globe via the internet and had a string of internet ‘hits’ with 10,000 downloads for the track ‘Straight Boy’.

Zombie Disco Squad have been named as “one of the most exciting prospects of 2009” – Jesse Rose so watch out.

The King Blues Take to the Streets

The King Blues members Jonny 'Itch' Fox, Jamie Jazz and Fruitbag have produced music that has defied convention. Unafraid to mix up dub bass lines, doo-wop a cappella songs, ska rhythms, Lonnie Donegan-styled skiffle, British folk and gritty poetry, theirs is a stripped-down, hot-wired one where ukuleles, acoustic guitars and melodicas feature heavily. It is punk music as it was intended – engaging, forward-thinking, all-encompassing.

28th March saw The King Blues take to the streets in G20 protests and Jonny was rocking the Fly53 Lost Soul t-shirt and it just so happened that there was a photographer around to capture the moment and it was published in Kerrang magazine.

British Sea Power

Kendal-via-Brighton four-piece British Sea Power released their career-best album, ‘Do You Like Rock Music’, in January last year, and then spent the rest of the yearpromoting it. Singer/guitarist Yan (AKA Scott Wilkinson) talks us through a busy 2008 and their plans for 2009…

What was your highlight of 2008?
Band-wise, we did like a really long tour of America - like three months around there – which was pretty interesting. I don’t think you’ll ever see all of America, but within three or four days, we drove from Canada snow down to Austin,Texas, where it was like, kinda through the deserts. We’ve been over quite a few times now - eight or nine times - but it’s definitely the longest we’ve ever toured in one go anywhere. It’s a quarter of a year in one country, its pretty long really. Imagine three months going around England, you know, you’d go to Birmingham like five times or something. I suppose you could do the Market towns or something, but…

Was it difficult being in each other’s pockets for so long?
No it wasn’t really, we were doing it in like a Splitter Van, kind of thing, so it was a cheaper do. Woody’s back caused his leg to give in - he got something like tendonitis down his shin, so he had to have all these cortisone injections. But you know, that’s a physical thing, rather than falling out. I think we missed two gigs and then he had to play three or four without like a kick drum…

What are you working on at the moment?
We’ve moved to the countryside, moved into a farmhouse, and we’re doing song writing and recording. I don’t want to jinx it or anything, but it [a new album] hopefully should be finished in, you know, six months or something. But you never know, do you? I mean the main thing is try and get… There’s a pheasant living in the garden, which makes a brilliant noise, you know, but he could be a temperamental vocalist, so we could be waiting a few months… It’s really in the early stages at the moment, so its impossible to say [how it will sound]. I’d like more hip-hop and dancing myself.

Who do you think is going to be big in 2009?
I’ve been noticing there are a few edgy girls around, so I’m hoping for a bigger rise in the girls in music. They’ve kind of come through a bit over the last couple of years, but they’re pretty ballad-y. I like these new edgy girls. I think it’s increasingly hard for an honest guitar band to do anything interesting.

Because so many other people have done it before?
It’s that, and also these schools, you know, like the Brighton Institute Of Music and stuff. It’s like teaching people who shouldn’t be given… It’s like giving keys to people who shouldn’t be allowed to drive. I don’t know, I like people who kind of learn on their own.

Did you make any New Year’s resolutions this year?
Err, what did I have? I had… Blimey, I’ve forgotten my New Year’s resolution already! I think staying away from drugs is a good one. I’m not like a druggy, but… I think they’re boring now. But I think that’s just like a psychological New Year’s hangover rather than a resolution - if I’d just had a big dinner, I would probably have said eat less…
