How to check if your printer is Chromebook compatible?

Update: After December 31, 2020, Google Cloud Print is deprecated.

Unfortunately, not all printers are compatible with Chromebook (running Chrome OS) unlike Windows and Mac operating systems that you only need to install a driver and voila you’re ready to print. There isn’t a thing like a Chromebook printer either. Until you get the printer, you probably won’t be able to know if it will work 100%.

However, there are certain things that make it likely for your printer to be Chromebook compatible. Namely, a wireless printer that supports Google Cloud Print is very likely to work with a Chromebook. Even an older printer will probably work with a Chromebook, although it’s less probable.

But again, if you are getting a modern printer, it’s very likely to work with your Chromebook.

Best Printers That are Compatible with Your Chromebook

Brother MFC-J995DW All-in-One Inkjet Printer

If you are ready to spend the money to get a good all-in-one inkjet printer, then maybe Brother MFC-J995DW is the right option for you. There are plenty of benefits in this printer to talk about, but we’ll try to keep it short.

The all-in-one functionality is also more or less the same, so you could still scan and copy documents with the TS5120 printer. But there are certain features that this printer lacks compared to the Canon TS9120 printer.

It’s not the fastest printer out there, and it also sacrifices some printing quality for the speed, but its print rate of 32 ppm is still very decent. And the recommended monthly volume of up to 2,000 pages and the maximum monthly duty cycle of 15,000 pages should be more than enough for most people.

And yeah, the paper input capacity of 250 sheets, as well as the 2-side printing really help with doing quick printing.

If you don’t need the speed of the Brother HL-2350DW for Chromebook printing, then we think that the Samsung M2020W printer is going to be a good option for you. This is a bit simpler printer, but there are some features that are better in it.

This printer isn’t as heavy-duty as Brother’s quick-printing printer. It prints with a speed of 21 ppm, as well as has a max monthly duty cycle of 10,000 sheets. The M2020W also accepts less paper in one go – 150 sheets to be precise. Thus, it is a suitable choice who need quick printing but whose tasks aren’t too high-volume.

On the other hand, the M2020W printer has an auto feeder system, which is going to make it a bit more convenient. However, it doesn’t have two-sided printing, which may be a downside for some people.

Back onto inkjet printers. This time, it is Epson Expressions ET-2650, which is similar to the Brother MFC-J995DW XL printer we reviewed in the very beginning. There are some similarities between these two printers, as well as a couple of notable differences.

In terms of printing quality, the two printers are pretty close to each other. The max print resolution in ET-2650 is 5760 x 1440 dpi, while the Brother printer had 6000 x 1200 dpi. So they are quite comparable.

This thing prints faster than any other printer on the list – up to 40 pages per minute, to be precise. In addition, it is made heavy-duty for high-volume tasks – namely, its recommended monthly print volume is 750-4,000 sheets, while the monthly duty cycle is 80,000 sheets.

And to make the printing process faster, this printer has a 50-sheet auto feeder, 2-side printing, as well as a 350-sheet input tray.

HP LaserJet Pro M203dw is a more down-to-earth printer than its higher-end brother. This printer still is a great office printer, but it is much less functional than the pricey M426fdw.

The M203dw printer has a printing speed of up to 30 ppm, which places it on the third place on our list after M426fdw and Brother HL-L2350DW. This printer’s duty cycle is quite nice as well – 30,000 pages per month. And its recommended monthly sheet volume is a decent 250-2500.

M203dw doesn’t have the auto feeding capacity of its elder brother, but it still has double-side printing. And the 250-sheet input tray capacity is very decent as well.

In terms of connectivity, the M203dw printer can do both wired and wireless printing. Needless to say, wired printing is done via Ethernet, while wireless printing is done via Wi-Fi and services like AirPrint or Google Cloud Print.

And yeah, what we also didn’t mention is that this printer isn’t an all-in-one printer like M426fdw. It’s just a monochrome laser printer, but quite a good one. And it costs not so much money.

How to print from Chromebooks?

Printing from a Chromebook is very often not as straightforward as from a Windows or Mac PC, but it isn’t too difficult to do either.

Today, we want to talk about two ways of printing via a Chromebook.

Chromebook printer standard setup

Most printers that have wired or wireless connection capability will work with Chromebook. If you have a modern printer with wireless connectivity, then you are likely to get it to work with your Chromebook.

Follow these steps in order to connect your printer to your Chromebook:

• Turn your printer on and connect it to a network. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions if necessary. If your printer doesn’t have wireless connection, just connect it to the Chromebook with a USB cable. This will also work if you don’t have internet access at the moment.

• Turn on your Chromebook, sign in to your account, and connect the Chromebook to the same network as the printer.
• At the bottom right, select the time and then
• Click on Advanced on the bottom of the Settings
• Go to the Printing section and select
• Click on Add Printer.
• Choose your printer from the list. If you don’t see your printer in the list, you can add it manually. We’ll describe how below.

If you see the “Select a printer manufacturer and model” prompt, choose your printer type.

• Press Ctrl + p on the page you wish to print.
• Go to the Destination menu and select
• Select your printer under Print Destinations or Recent destinations.

If you don’t see your printer in the Printers window, follow these steps to add the printer manually.

For this option, you will need a printer that has Wi-Fi connectivity, as well as a computer with the Chrome browser installed.

It may not be lightweight but it works best and it almost gives a professional quality scan that’s good enough for printing these digital copies.

What are Super 8 and 8mm films?

Super 8 and 8mm films were commonly used to record special events and memories from the ‘30s up to the ‘80s. Let’s clear some confusion on the names used in referring to film formats.  Videotape formats called 8mm, Hi8 and Digital 8 videotape were used in camcorders manufactured by major brands such as Sharp, Canon, and Sony. These camcorder videotapes are not the ones being referred to in this article.

In the same way, Super 8 and 8mm films are also subjects of confusion. Both of these films are wide from edge to edge, and at first glance, look quite similar to each other. Both 8mm and Super 8 films are used to record home movies, providing generations with cultural gems about real life with family and friends. However, the Super 8 film has smaller sprocket holes on the edge.

Super 8 films

The Super 8 format was introduced by Kodak in 1965. Along with the film, they also sold compatible cameras and projectors. It is easier to use than the 8mm film because the cartridge loader did not need reloading or re-threading halfway through, and it also had fewer jamming issues compared to other film formats.

This format was also very convenient because it was packaged in plastic cartridges. It also has smaller and more widely-spaced perforations.

Super 8 films have much smaller sprocket holes. The holes are aligned to the middle of the frame. This means that the image area is bigger, making it have more quality images.

Super 8 films also have up to 1000 lines of resolution. The width of each film, including the holes is 7.90mm.  The frame itself measures 5.79 mm in width and 4.01 mm in height. The size of the frame on a Super 8 is 50% bigger compared to the 8mm film, which leads to a sharper picture. In fact, the Super 8 film format is still being used in the art film community for commercials, short films and music videos as a cheaper alternative to high-definition video.

Super 8 films was a breakthrough when it was released because it removed the need to manually thread the film on the spool. This means that loading the camera required only two seconds, or even less.

Before the Super 8 film was released, the camera had to be opened and the spools flipped so that the unexposed film edge could be recorded on during the second pass through the camera. The Super 8 also revolutionized the amateur film genre because it provided great image quality.

The whole 50-foot cartridge could now be shot without interruption. Although the original movies made on Super 8 were silent, in 1973, the film began to be made with a magnetic strip, making it possible to record sound with the image. The Super 8 film began to wane in popularity in the 1980s when newer technologies such as the camcorder became the default method for creating home videos.

Nowadays, Super 8 films can still be purchased in some specialty stores.

8mm films

8mm films were released by the Eastman Kodak company in 1932. During that time, professional motion pictures were shot on 35 mm wide films, while semi-professional and amateur filmmakers were using film that was less than half as wide, at 16mm.

As film-making became more widespread, more and more people wanted to capture their personal memories on film.  However, the 16mm is still not a viable option for many because it could not capture sound. Eastman Kodak created a more affordable alternative, the 8mm, which became commercially available for widespread use.

Also called Regular 8mm film, it was retailed in spools with 16mm film. The 8mm is filmed on two separate edges to maximize time for filming.

The 8mm film passes through the cameras twice. On its first pass, the film is exposed on half its width, and on the second pass, it is flipped and exposed on its other side. When it is developed, the 16mm wide film is cut through in half, thus making it 8mm.

On a standard 8mm film, the holes are not aligned in the middle of each frame. The entire film including the holes measures 7.90 mm in width. The frame itself measures 4.5 mm in width and 3.3 mm in height. 8mm is usually measured per foot. The approximate footage of a reel can be obtained by first measuring the diameter of the reel. The 8mm film was not sold anymore in the 1990s, although there are still some specialty stores that still sell them.

Also, if there are splices in your home movies, you can’t leave the Wolverine unattended for long periods of time because aforesaid splices got caught up. However, this is attributed to the quality of the film rather than the product itself.

How to convert Super 8 and 8mm films to Digital

If you want to convert your Super 8 or 8mm to digital or DVD format, there are many processes and formats to choose from.

Here are some ways to convert 8mm and Super 8 films to digital.

1. Videotaping

Videotaping is the simplest way to transfer film.  The method is done by simply projecting the film onto a wall and recording the film using your camcorder or video camera. The best screening can be achieved if the film is projected on a white wall. Although it is a simple and straightforward method, you need to control the speed variable of the film and it sometimes results in distortion, resulting in trapezoid-shaped images. These distorted images will have to be edited. The recorded film can then be transferred to your laptop or desktop computer.

2. Telecine Method

The issue of being off-axis, which is usually created when film projection on a wall is employed, will be corrected with the telecine method. The telecine method uses a mirror, reflecting the images onto a back screen. The result is that it aligns the axis of the camcorder and the projector. Telecines generated real-time video at the expense of noisy and unstable images. For great results, you can also use a speed projector. It is possible to connect telecines to a camcorder or computer.

Here is the step-by-step process of this transfer method, transferring an 8mm film to DVD or other digital formats:

• Clean and repair every inch of the film. Depending on the damage, this could be a time-consuming process. Look for bad splices, which will be re-spliced to ensure a smooth transfer.
• Backlight the 8 mm film with diffused lighting. The light source should also have low wattage and it is not so hot. It will not scorch your film.
• Using a magnifying-glass-like device or a quality 3-CCD camera, the surface of the 8mm film is then reflected. In this process, it is important to check that nothing comes in between the film and the imaging equipment. This ensures an exact duplication of the film being copied.
• The 8mm movie reel that was transferred will be properly labelled on a DVD menu. It is best to use high-quality DVD brands, which could last for up to a hundred years or more.
• If your option is transferring the 8mm film to a digital file, you can create an .avi, .mov, or .mp4 file then copy it into a thumb drive.

3. Using a DSLR

Another alternative for transferring film to digital format is using a DSLR camera. A DSLR camera can usually shoot a video and it can also access manual shutter/aperture settings. With this method, you can actually capture the film images from the lens of the projector into the camera.  The film content can then be recorded straight into a memory card or it can be sent via live video stream to a USB.

4. Film Scanning

Film scanners capture images one frame at a time. They scan the film one line or a pixel at a time. The film should be scanned on a sprocket-less, roller-based film scanner. Most film scanners continuously advance the film and can register each frame without sprocket holes.

Knowing how to scan negatives is a big part of analogue photography. Some enthusiasts would love to scan their own film negatives or even photo prints but do not quite know how, but it’s not really a daunting task once you know the basics. Scanning your negatives puts you in control of the output.

Negative Film Formats

If you want to know how to scan negatives, you need to have some knowledge first about the types of film formats available. It will help you decide which is best to use in certain applications and it also makes a difference in the scanning process. Here are some of the most used formats.

Let’s start at the very beginning.

116 Film and 616 Film

If you’re interested in the very beginning of negative films, get to know the 116 and 616 film. Introduced in 1899, the 116 film format was widely used until 1932 when Kodak introduced the 620 along with the 616.

The 616 film was quite similar to the first 116 but its negative stocks were wound on smaller spools so that they fit smaller cameras. The 116 film format was discontinued in 1984.

120 Film

Moving forward to 1901, the 120 film took the previous formats’ place and grew in popularity. This medium-format film is used for a wide variety of photography and is still quite popular today especially with the launch of the Holga, a medium-format camera made in Hong Kong.

Introduced by Kodak, this is the main format that amateur photographers use with their beginner or box cameras. But it later became a preferred format for professional photographers. For more information about scanning 120 film, we put up a definitive guide here.

220 Film

We can now move to 1965 when the 220 film was introduced. It has the same width as the 120 but double its length. You’ll see that it has twice the number of exposures for each roll. Another difference of the 220 is that it does not have a backing paper like the 120 film.

This design allows a longer film on the same size of spool. However, you wouldn’t see a printed frame number, the ones that can be seen from the frame indicator of old cameras. The film is thinner than the 120 that has a backing paper and it required a pressure plate for optimal focus.

Some cameras can accommodate both 120 and 220 films. These cameras are designed with two-position adjustment of the pressure plate and would have a switch so you can adjust the winding.

620 Film

Going back around 1932, the 620 film came about around the same time as the 616. This is what replaced the first 116 film that we’ve mentioned above. It is basically a roll film similar to the 120 with the same width and length.

127 Film

The 127 film is another type of roll film that is paper-backed. It is 4.6m wide and was originally designed to stock 8 photos in 4 x 6.5cm format. Kodak made it for their Vest Pocket camera and the film was often called Vest Pocket film.

126 Film

If you’ve ever heard of the Kodapak 126, this was the 126 film introduced in 1963. Its cartridge is a roll film magazine that has a paper backing. Kodak created the film in response to customer complaints about the complicated process of loading and unloading roll film cameras.

With the 126 cartridge film, you didn’t have to attach the film leader to a spool. It simply drops into the camera. The film was designed so that it cannot be loaded incorrectly. You only needed to close the back then you wind and shoot.

126 cameras are designed with a small hole that shows the back of the cartridge where you can see the film details printed on the film. It also shows the frame number located on the backing paper.

135 Film (35mm film canister)

Perhaps, the most popular film format until today is the 35mm negative film which was originally known as the 135 film. It was first developed as an experiment by Thomas A. Edison’s laboratory in New Jersey. It was made by splitting a 70mm roll film.

It took several years before Kodak made it one of their regular products.

828 Film

Shortly after the 620 film, Kodak introduced the 828 film. It was an unperforated 35mm roll film with backing paper. It was designed to avoid some of the issues encountered with the early 35mm films. It has a smaller diameter spool and there was no need for a sprocket.

This designed allowed the film to fit smaller cameras. The 828 film was mostly used for Kodak’s Bantam camera series. Other variations of the 35mm film formats with paper backing include the Bolta and the Konishiroku which was made for the Konilette.

APS Film

In 1996, the APS film was introduced. It was an alternative to the 110 format and its cartridges were optimized for fully automatic film load. The cartridge enclosed the 24mm wide film when it is not in use.

Some cameras used for the APS had a light-proof door and a partially exposed film can that can be removed for later use. The film can be put back into the cartridge and the user can have it back after it has been developed.

APS stands for Advanced Photo System and it was mainly used for point and shoot cameras. It was also called the Advantix. It allowed 3 image formats including the panoramic format.

It had a lot of advantages compared to the 35mm film but did not get as popular because of the small film area that made it difficult to create large and detailed prints.

110 Film

The 110 film was introduced in 1972. Its cartridge was launched by Kodak to address similar user complaints about the complicated loading and unloading of roll film cameras, much like they did for the 126 film. They made it easier to load the film and it quickly became popular.

The film was smaller in size, half of the 35mm film. However, it was difficult to enlarge and achieve higher resolution scans. It is often associated with prints and scans that are rather dull and grainy.

Disc Film

Finally, there was the uniquely designed disc film, introduced by Kodak in 1982. It looked like a flat disc and was covered in a plastic cartridge. You could store 15 exposures in one disc and it rotated 24 degrees between each image.

These 15 images were arranged around the disc. However, its small size made it difficult to scan and it went out of production by 1999 and is no longer used.

Three Ways to Scan Film Negatives

You would need some special equipment to scan negatives, however, you can also use ordinary flatbed scanners as an alternative. It’s cheaper and if you’re not very particular about some details, it could still produce good output.

Today, there are specialized negative film scanners available. Some of them are compact and you can use them in your home office or studio. There is always the option to send your negatives to a professional lab but it’s more fun knowing how to scan negatives on your own.

Using a Flatbed Scanner

Let us take a look at this widely used technique. Using an ordinary scanner will not give you great results but there are things you can do to improve your scans. It only involves some materials that you may already have at home.

You would need a bright light source that is coming from behind the negative and most multipurpose scanners do not have this feature. Since negatives require to be backlit, you can use a bit of cardboard to redirect light and produce good quality scans.

Using a flatbed scanner is easy. Just place a negative on the adapter and place it on the scanner. However, I like how Andre Lewis scanned his old films with a flatbed scanner. I summarized it below.

Note: This technique can also be used with high end flatbed scanners like Epson Perfection V600 andCanon CanoScan 9000F MKII.

1. Find a thick silver card stock and cut it into this pattern.

2. Put it over the slide that you want to save so that when you scan it, the light from the flatbed would bounce up into the wedge. The light would then reflect down and provide a basic backlight.

3. Make necessary adjustments using your preferred software, like inverting colors and performing other corrections like dust removal. Most flatbed scanners have automatic dust and scratch removal technology.

The great thing about this technique is that you can teak the design so that it can fit other sizes of film that you have. It would not come out as perfectly as a specially designed film scanner but with a bit of work, you could achieve good quality results at a fraction of the price.

Using a Film Scanner

You can always use a dedicated film scanner, which is the easiest way and they come in different styles. Some allow multiple formats and are more versatile. It’s pretty easy to use and it’s normally just a matter of placing your film and the machine will do the rest.

Another advantage is that it’s very fast and efficient. You can get high-quality scans and they can perform up to 4,000 dpi or dots per inches optical resolution. This is a great choice if you’re an imaging professional but amateurs can also learn a lot using this equipment.

Scan times can be as fast as 3 seconds. Sometimes, these scanners can automatically correct your images like the color and contrast. They often come with a compatible software so you can do even more adjustments on your own.

The steps in scanning negatives using dedicated film scanners would vary. Different brands and models may have special instructions but you basically just have to lay out your negatives and letting the machine do the scanning.

What is a 120 Film?

A 120 film is a typical roll film format. It was called 120 because it is bigger than the 35mm film but smaller than a sheet film so the term medium format is often used interchangeably. But do not confuse the 120 film with being 120mm in size.

It comes wrapped around a spool which was originally made of wood. Later, manufacturers made spools out of metal and finally, plastic. A spool of 120 film can yield up to 16 images, depending on the type of camera and film masks that you use.

The film is always lightly wrapped in paper before you insert it into a camera or film back. This paper backing is blackened on one side so that it’s completely opaque. It used to have a red window that you can see from the camera back for exposure counting in the previous designs.

This type of film requires some special care because it needs to be processed and printed with some professional equipment. It was originally intended for amateurs and hobbyists and as it grew in popularity, it became the main format for box cameras.

120 Film Format and Frame Sizes

You can come up with several image formats using a 120 film. The most common format used with a 120 is the 6 x 6 or a 56 x 56mm square.
