It's been another successful year of the 48 hour film project and it's time check them out and find a winner!

What is the 48 hour film project, you ask?

Each year, hundreds of locals get together to write, shoot, edit, and produce a 4 to 7 minute movie over well...48 hours. Teams gathered at Oviedo High School Friday night to get their film genre. It could be from anywhere to drama to thriller to comedy to mockumentary or even romance. From there they were off on a mad dash to meet the 7:30 PM deadline Sunday evening.

Please join us Thursday, August 26th at 6 PM at the Plaza Cinema Café in downtown Orlando to see all the fantastic films on the big screen!

There will be 3 judges there to pick the best and the winner will compete against the best films from other cities. From there, the grand-prize winner will be shown at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011.

So, come out and support our local filmmakers this Thursday!

BarCamp Tampa Bay is an unconference, which means that there are presentations throughout the day but they are done by willing attendees instead of pre-planned speakers.

The topics and the presenters are diverse, but will appeal to anyone who works (or has an interest) in technology and the internet. This is an event for web designers, developers, marketers, copy writers, SEOs, sys admins and anyone who operates a business with a web presence to get together and share their knowledge.

The schedule starts BLANK in the morning and is filled up by attendees that want to do a presentation.

Presenters choose their room and time and everyone else scours the board to choose the path that they will take for the day. At least, that’s the plan. The endearing quality of the unconference format is that you have options all day. If the presentation you choose isn’t what you were expecting, you can always jump over into another room and check out something else.

The day is what you make it, by choosing presentations to attend and deciding whether or not to present a topic yourself.

This is the best part of BarCamp. You can coast through the day sponging up information from your peers or you can actually present on a topic that you feel others may benefit from. While most presenters prepare topics beforehand, there are sometimes impromptu topics from passionate people inspired by the feel of the day.

This event is essentially a Jelly. Bring your laptop, or your homework (or whatever you need to work on). Meet some new people, most of whom work from home. There will be a lunch hour and a collaborative spirit. It's a bit like going to a traditional office, but in a non-traditional setting, and few if any of the attendees work for the same company.

The earliest Coworking meetups in Orlando actually pre-date Florida Creatives by a few weeks, I believe. At the time, they were "Coworking Fridays", and they were held at places like the Lake Eola Panera Bread and B&S Daily Market in Downtown Orlando. After B&S closed and Alex Rudloff moved out of Orlando, several places were tried, like the meeting room at CityView when Jason and Meagan lived there, Cafe Ritazza, Volcano's Coffee, and many others.

About three years ago (February 26th, 2008), Gavin, Chad, Chris, Phil and myself were hanging out at CopyNight Orlando, and we got to talking about Coworking. This is when we came up with Coworking Tuesdays. Gavin and I stayed at Stardust long after closing, and I decided to shoot some video.

A laser engraver is a cheaper solution to industrial fabrication than a full laser cutter or cnc router, and can be used to mass-produce cheap parts for MakerBots and RepRaps to precise measurements. it only takes $1600 to $1700 to afford one for our hackerspace open-to-the-public lab in Altamonte Springs.

FAMiLab is a profitless community-based art and technology collective running out of Orlando, Fl (i.e. a hackerspace). The ultimate goal of the FAMiLab is to provide a safe space where hackers, makers, and crafters can wield their imagination in any way they see fit. Think of the FAMiLab as a club for geeks! New Instrument: Dijbass

Seen on the Behringer blog:

an unlikely combination of didgeridoo and electric bass. Sporting a 24-inch hollow aluminum body, the instrument is able to produce tones in the same range as its traditional didgeridoo cousin, which can reach lengths of 8 feet or more. This is due to a complex system of internal baffles that "fold the air flow in half and direct it out the front." Not sure I follow the acoustics going on there, but it sounds great to me! A small condenser microphone is housed within the assembly to reproduce the didge-tones.
The electric bass elements of the instrument are fairly traditional; four strings, a pickup, and an output jack. There's also a switch that raises the middle two strings from the fingerboard, allowing the instrument to be played with a bow!

Hand-Drawn Holograms

Or get fancy and use a professional compass and black-painted polycarbonate. Or automate the process with a paperclip stuck into a motorized electric eraser, or a CNC mill with a drag-engraving tool.
For lots of hints, see http://amasci.com/amateur/holohint.html Best is to use a good $10 compass, soft plastic that's slightly greasy, and replace the extremely sharp compass needle with a small finishing nail. Clear plastic works fine, or place some dark paper behind it.

Are these genuine holograms? Abrasion holography or "Chatoyant holograms" employ the same physics as white-light or "rainbow" holograms invented by Benton at MIT. Benton holograms reflect light from a point source, and they do not require any interference pattern. This is why a Rainbow Hologram functions the same under any wavelength of illumination. The fringes of Benton holograms can have any spacing: much wider than wavelengths of light. My company, Gifts With Humanity, is hosting an art competition where we're going to pay for the winning artist's Christmas.

Gifts With Humanity is hosting a country wide Art Competition to celebrate the resourcefulness of fair trade producers who so often find a second use of anything and everything. Trash to Treasure is the theme and $500 is up for grabs!

All of the music is recorded, however, i lack the finances needed to complete the mixing, mastering and duplication processes of the album. We (S.K.I.P. & Swamburger) have self-funded the recording and promotional aspects of the album, bringing in musicians and instrumentalists such as Jimmy Seay, Kris Gruda, Sean Moore, Clay Watson, and Beef Wellington to make this record a unique and explosive musical experience.

Photowalking is the act of walking with a camera for the main purpose of taking pictures of things that the photographer may find interesting.

From Wikipedia:

It is usually a communal activity organised by camera clubs, online forums or commercial organisations, sometimes in the form of a walking tour. Often the aim is to practice and improve one's own photography skills rather than a specific focus on documentary photography.

While the camera need not be a digital camera, in practice the low cost of digital photography and the ease of digital photo processing and online photo sharing allow a casual approach in photowalking.

While related to street photography, photowalking is differentiated by its impetus to photograph things of interest rather than people specifically. As with any walking that may go a few miles or kilometers, photowalking can also promote physical fitness.

It's been almost a year since the last photowalk, at least that anyone wrote about on this site.

Photowalking (faux-toe-wha-keen), AKA the social act of taking pictures of things you probably walk past every day, but never take the time to really look at. More: http://www.photowalking.org/faq/

A few months ago, we took a photowalk around College Park. It was well attended, and there were lots of new people. We have also done photowalks around Lake Eola, in Winter Park, and Downtown Orlando. Check out our Orlando Photowalking Flickr pool for examples.

A bunch of folks will meet up at the Gazebo in downtown Winter Garden on Plant St and strike out from there by 4:30PM. This way it shouldn't be too hot or too dark once we get started.

Once we finish, we'll scope out a place to eat or drink. Downtown has at least a half-dozen spots that are great for just that.

Bring your camera and blank memory cards. Point-and-shoots as well as DSLRs, or the old-school kind are all welcome.

Likemind is before work (8AM), it happens downtown, and everyone is welcome. Bring a few friends, get some coffee, and tell us what's on your mind.

Groups in 60+ other cities all over the world will be getting together for conversations with their community - sure, they may not have 2+ years of these events behind them, but we do.

More than 3 years ago, I heard about these two marketing guys / geeks from New York who had started an event they held on Friday mornings for coffee and conversation. The first few were just the two of them, but as they invited people and the word got out, it grew until it started getting on the radar all over the world. Now Likemind happens in scores of cities on every continent, and Orlando has been on that list almost since the beginning.

Likemind in Orlando could be huge - in a different way than the Happy Hours and Coworking have been. The point of Likemind is the exchange of ideas - it's not a networking event, it's a discussion. There are tons of networking events. They suck. There are tons of user groups. Their format is generally a presentation. We all know from the Cluetrain Manifesto, and from events like BlogOrlando and BarCamp, that conversations are powerful things.

One of the first reasons we started Likemind was to encourage the coworking scene locally - that's grown up and there are now several healthy groups in town. Attendance to likemind has been poor, and sometimes even I forget when it's happening. Likemind is too cool an idea to have it fall by the side of the road. The events in New York and London are huge, with 50-100 attendees every month. When I went in London, they said 80% of the people were newcomers every month. If we can be half as successful, we'll have a huge impact.

You show up, I'll buy coffee and breakfast. Just like the old days.

The Drunken Monkey is a great place, and it's not right in the heart of downtown - I don't know if that fact will end up helping or hurting in the long run - we'll try it out for a few months. The coffee is great, the food is good, and the attitude is right. Plus, you can sometimes run into people from other circles there, which never happens at Panera or Starbuck's.

A great thing about Stardust, Dandelion, Austin's or Drunken Monkey are the people from the Film, Theatre, Music, and Art communities in town who call those places their "third place", where they go when it's not work or home. Cross-pollination is going to be important to an event like Likemind.

It's interesting to see how much of Orlando's Likemind is visible on the internet - Alex, Cory and Florida Creatives appear in the first 3 pages of google for "likemind", along with Piers and Noah (who started the event in New York), San Fran, Berlin, Italy, Austin, Milwaukee, Tokyo, and a few others. Orlando gets more hits on those 3 pages than the founders!

Please twitter about it, grow the community, talk it up, put it on your calendar, and help Orlando leave a wake on it's way sailing to the top of the world.

Someone told me about this site today - they provide a way for people who want to create products to sell online - through trusted sources. She is a mommy blogger, so she might want to list items other moms would be interested in. You share the profit between yourself (the seller) and Open Sky, and I imagine the manufacturer gets their cut as well.

This video chronicles my odyssey with replicating the iconic gold Daft Punk helmet worn by Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo. Over the process, I took hundreds of pictures, mostly because my crummy digital camera I shoot with has a bum autofocus. What you see are the collection of all of these images, and a little hint of video as well.

The Mission(s) of Social Media Club

In looking at what is most important to us, it would seem most appropriate to focus our efforts on the four areas of our core mission:

Media Literacy: Find and organize all the best Introduction to Social Media presentations, classes, discussions, cartoons, videos, blog posts etc… There are a lot of ‘here is what you need to know about social media‘ lists out there as well – where are they, which ones are the best. If you have some materials to submit, or if you run across some good material, can you please join this project by submitting your introduction to Social Media materials on the Social Media Club wiki.

Sharing Lessons Learned: We are building a section on Social Media Champions – the people inside of organizations who fought for engaging customers, employees and the broader market through Social Media. We are looking for champions to fill out an online interview form and will be publishing the findings on the Social Media Club blog and some of them in the book. In short, we want to discover how you overcame the objections of management, what worked for you and what didn’t. Or more simply, how did you go from weird outsider to welcomed champion? Go to the Champions project page on the wiki for more information.

Encourage Adoption of Industry Standards: Leverage our collective expertise to further promote key industry standards such as Creative Commons, Open ID, Data Portability, the Open Web Foundation and others. In principle it would be great if we could do work along the lines of what Chris Messina et al did with Spread Firefox – find ways to expand awareness and explain these key standards to more everyday folks, business decision makers and others.

Promote Ethical Behavior: This is tougher to get a project going in this area since it is more of a matter of discussion, but from that principle, comes the idea for our first project. We are starting a discussion about how membership in Social Media Club can serve as a ‘trusted mark’ for people to know that someone is ethical, understands social media and is committed to the advancement of the industry. There are more and more people claiming to be ’social media experts’ while more and more of us are shunning such titles, realizing we are merely practitioners who are learning more each day.

GOVERNOR’S OFFICE OF FILM & ENTERTAINMENT’S NEW PRODUCTION DIRECTORY OPEN FOR REGISTRATION!

Registration has begun for the Governor’s Office of Film and Entertainment’s new online production directory! Reel Crew, as the directory is known, will revolutionize the way that potential clients find the crew members and support services they need for their Florida projects! Reel-Crew is an expansion to the Reel-Scout system that will create a searchable, electronic database of Florida’s skilled workforce and available production resources.

The new directory will allow local crew and support services to register, create a profile with information on their work history and professional credits, and even upload their resume (brochure upload will be available for businesses). These profiles will be accessible by clients all over the world looking to bring their projects to Florida.

Clients will be able to create a customized directory of crew and support services for the area(s) they are looking to work in. Search for crew members and local business by category, region, union affiliation, and much more! Additionally, clients will have the ability to print their results (with just a click) in a variety of ways – e.g., by name, by category, will all credits listed, with just the most recent credits listed, etc.

Crew members and support services can register for the new directory at www.filminflorida.com. Stay tuned for more information on when the guide’s search feature will go live!

IADT Orlando will be hosting Moroccan Summer Nights (a festival and open house) on Saturday, June 26 from 4pm to 8pm.

Moroccan Summer Nights will transport you across the globe to a North African Moroccan market and festival. You will have the opportunity to enjoy authentic Moroccan food, belly dancing, a Henna tattoo artist, and explore student designed merchandise. You will also be able to attend one of our six design workshops and explore what IADT's career focused education is all about.

Children are also welcome and will have the opportunity to meet rare African animals, play in our castle bounce house, and enjoy hot dogs and hamburgers from the grill.

Hackathon: Building Apps for Charity

commandN is one of the premier video podcasts in the world, not to mention one of the longest-running. In a recent episode, they featured a short documentary about a Hackfest in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Held at a Coworking space in Halifax called The Hub, a group of designers, programmers and marketers gathered to create small applications for entertainment, social connections, and creativity. The apps are then sold on the iTunes store, with all benefits going to charity.

The segment, from commandN episode 214 is called "Spotlight", and it starts about 5 minutes in to the video:

ORLANDO SKETCH NIGHT is not a live event. It is a Sketch Video Event that shows off all of the cool sketch comedy videos from groups and individuals in Orlando and the surrounding areas. THIS EVENT WILL BEGIN PROMPTLY AT 8:30 PM.Park at the Library’s Garage downtown and enter Avalon Gallery from Pine Street where we’ll charge $4 admission.

In March of 2010, after eight years as a community bookstore in downtown Orlando and Thornton Park, the Urban Think! Bookstore closed its doors, leaving as its legacy the Urban Think! Foundation.

The Foundation believes that when creativity flourishes, the community benefits, and through its mission to enrich Orlando's cultural landscape the Foundation is working to re-think the bookstore space as a creative center serving the Orlando community.
