This podcast is a result of that journey and offers a refreshed perception of the South African music scene, with new voices and perspectives.

Discover the new sounds of South Africa’s thriving and diverse music scene, from electro and jazz to post rock and futuristic hip hop.

Connect ZA is a cross-artform project taking place in 2014 and led by the British Council, connecting young people aged between 18 and 35 in the UK and South Africa through creativity.

Flomotion loves KanZeOn – a brilliant and beautiful film revolving around the subjects of music and religion in Japan which explores the nature and essence of sound. The film focuses on three particular musicians on the island of Kyushu; Eri Fujii, who plays the sho, a rare and ancient Chinese bamboo wind instrument evoking the cry of the phoenix; Akihiro Iitomi, a performer and teacher of Noh theatre and a kotsuzumi drum player whose love of jazz almost matches his passion for Japan’s traditional performing arts; and, Akinobu Tatsumi, a young Buddhist priest and custodian of a temple outside of Kumamoto City who moonlights as a hip-hop DJ and indulges his love of beat boxing in remote forests.

KanZeOn ReInspirations features remixes of tracks featured in the film – which has just been released on DVD with a CD of highlights from the soundtrack.

About Lucas Santtana
Equal parts Thom Yorke and Tom Ze, Lucas Santtana is one of Brazil’s most interesting, dynamic and experimental singer-songwriter-producers from the new generation of Brazilian musicians. On `Sem Nostalgia’ Lucas used only voices, acoustic guitars, ambient sound and samplers to create a textured, haunting, disorientating and forward thinking soundscape. Lucas will recreate the album live with the Sem Nostalgia duo of Bruno Buarque (percussion, samplers) and Regis Damasceno (bass, guitar). Drawing influences from dub, bossa nova and folktronica, expect to hear the band move from haunting reverb-soaked ballads to glitchy percussive workouts that showcase Lucas’s potent songwriting and the musicians’ unique re-imagination of space, texture and rhythm. What interests and inspires Santtana “are musicians that do not think of harmony, melody or rhythm but of layers of sound. I am not interested in the specific guitar chord, but in it’s texture – and overdubbing these layers, these musical textures, is what inspires me.” Santtana adds “Our music has international influences as much as Brazilian: it does not fit into any pre-disposed clichés of tropical, colourful music.”

Deadstock 33s & Stopmakingme Mix

We’re delighted to bring you this Deadstock 33s & Stopmakingme Mix! Their new 4 track EP, ‘Gravity’, is out now on Tigersushi and it’s awesome…

The latest release from Joakim’s Tigersushi record label sees The Deadstocks 33s collaborating with Stopmakingme for an EP of 4 lush, sometimes Balearic sounding slabs of proto House dance music. Straight off the back of Crackboy’s EP, and Joakim’s debut single from the new album, ‘Gravity’ compounds the summer mood of Dance Music, joining the ranks of artist Gatto Fritto and Soulclap.

For the very few of us in the world that don’t live in London this might be a good moment to talk a little about our artists. Deadstock 33s is the brainchild of Justin Robertson, possibly a living legend in British Dance music. Of his credentials we can find a long serving residency at the Hacienda alongside Sasha and Mike Pickering. Outside of the Hacienda, you could find him doing his bit for Balearic with Most Excellent, a club night that the Chemical Brother’s often cite as their classroom and Justin as their mentor. Never one to stay still Justin formed the group Lionrock combining house music and dub sensibilities, scoring several chart hits, but more importantly remaining at the forefront of what is now known as Progressive House whilst often being cited as an architect of the sound. It is these credentials that justify any-bodies adulation for this artist, let alone Dan from Stopmakingme:

“Justin Robertson was a name I had heard loads about growing up. His name was always cited next to some of my heroes, like Weatherall, who had made names for themselves since the early days of Acid House by playing amazing music from the dustiest corners of their record collection in big clubs. The more I learned about him, the more I realized this guy was the real deal. Skip forward a few years and his Deadstock 33s records are a major staple in my sets. A message from the man himself saying he liked a remix of mine was enough to make me smile for about a week. We got talking and soon realized our tastes crossed over in so many different places. Hawkwind and New Order mean as much to us as Carl Craig or The Emperor Machine. This is what we really wanted to push with the music we started to make together and it is with much excitement that I can play this EP to my friends from home.”

Stopmakingme aka Dan Avery is not as green as it might appear when greeted with the fresh-faced young lad that stares back at you from his website. Having started one of London’s most influential Indie-Dance cross over clubs Kill Em All, Let God Sort Them Out and a record label Kill Em All with partners the Filthy Dukes, it is fair to say Dan has cut his teeth with some of the bigger and more respected names in the UK scene. Djing helped inform the art of the remix with Hercules & Love Affair, DFA 1979, Metronomy, Black Devil Disco Club, In Flagranti and Munk some of the artists he has had the opportunity to re-imagine. Dan’s own releases Rattle Gang 12’s and Kill Em All helped catch the attention of some of his piers, not least partner Justin: “one of the best producers around, an adventurer with an open mind. Dan has no qualms in mixing the influences he loves into something beguiling and new, his sound is fresh and yet instantly classic, our times in the studio are frantic with enthusiasm for sounds from psych to elongated electronica , we’ve tried to capture that joy here, hope you dig”

If all of this seems to be rather grandeurs for a debut PR then simply turn to the music. With the ‘Heavy’ EP this is something that we are not shy on, with 4 tracks of original music, culminating in over 24 minutes of forward-thinking Dance music.

Alan Starck made his storming live debut last Saturday, 11th June, at Ginglik in West London, and we’ve got an exclusive recording of his set, courtesy of the man himself. He also took the time to answer some pressing questions we had about his music. Check out Alan’s website for more…

How long have you been making music?
I started as a classically trained musician, learning about music performance and composing early in my life. Over the years I have dabbled with technology based music production on and off for relaxation but have been seriously interested in it since Ominim Records became interested in my work last year. Since then, I have been beavering away in the studio whenever I get a scrap of time and continually strive to make better tunes to bring me further forward in this little adventure.

Who currently inspires you musically, and who have done so in the past?
I’ve always been heavily interested in music from a broad range of genres. Classical, Jazz, Electronica, Pop… there is always something special to find in all types of music. I generally like music that has some sort of quirky deviation from normal conventions. I like music that provokes unusual emotions that you don’t normally get to experience in real life. I’m often drawn into just a few moments of a track or song and can spend a lot of time listening to and appreciating a few chords or melodic patterns. In terms of electronica, I was heavily into the Detroit techno era that started in the 90s and still enjoy the music that has spawned from this particular sub-genre.

What are your releases to date?
My first relatively down tempo ‘Farrago’ LP 2010 (cover image above). The electric ‘Electrica’ EP 2010. The not necessarily gooder, but more funner ‘Funner’ EP 2011. I’m almost ready to release a new faster tempo album. I played a number of these new tracks at my first live performance at Ginglik earlier this month and they seemed to go down well.

If you could collaborate with anyone – living or dead – who would you chose?
I’d love to write some music with beats by 808state, decorated with lyrics and haunting backing vocals by Kate bush, some orchestral punches scored by Stravinsky, a bit of moody trumpet from Miles Davis as well as some sweeping synthy strings/80s nostalgiation from Prince.

Tell us about your studio set up?
Your typical home studio setup with a mishmash of hardware and software that I have collected over the years. I also use guitars, 50p drums from a boot sale, children, perished balloons, polyester shirt collars, various parts of my anatomy and anything else that makes a noise to make my tunes.

What do you use when you perform live?
I will be using the same as above. I hope to increase the live component of performance now that I have got my first gig under my belt. The first one was about getting a feel for the whole process and avoiding technical chaos. I was just relieved to get through a glitch free set, keeping the revelers relatively revelous. Next time I hope to develop more of a presence and involvement and focus on the fun.

What are your musical hopes and plans?
I am due to release a new album, which i think is different and a step forward from my previous releases. I continue to strive to produce music that someone, somewhere will appreciate. I would like to play more gigs and develop this aspect. Most importantly, I want to continue enjoying what I do. I will only carry on if it stays fun.

Nick spoke to the band recently and asked them some questions about their very fine music…

What is Splashgirl?
Splashgirl is a band consisting of three young, Norwegian musicians playing piano, double bass and drums. The band was formed in 2004, and sweet music ,occurred almost instantly. We released our first record (Doors. Keys.) in 2007, on AIM Records, an album very much inspired by the likes of Paul Bley and Christian Wallumrød, with a form of jazz music with a distinct classical chamber music sound to it. On this record, the trio was reinforced with additional instruments; saxophone, bass clarinet and violin, creating the aforementioned chamber music touch, and also linking it more to jazz music then what has been the case on the later records.

Sometime during 2008 the music started changing, much of our improvisations started to be based on repetition and a strong attention to detail. The music was unraveling slowly, turning in to a suggestive drone-based form of music, a kind of improvisation that didn’t necessarily sound improvised. Our second album Arbor was recorded in this period, using simple recording tools in a small, wooden house in Oslo. On this album, we got help from a couple of guitar players; Lasse Passage on acoustic guitar and tape machines, and Anders Hofstad Sørås on pedal steel guitar.

Splashgirl’s third album will be released in august, and the music has now taken a turn towards more concise compositions and a clearer sound. The subtle use of electronics from the last records has been taken a step further, and the reference to drone music is a lot more obvious, to the point that we had the drone music guru Randall Dunn (Earth, Sunn 0))), Jesse Sykes) mixing our album.

Who are their biggest musical influences and musical heroes?
Earth, Oren Ambarchi, Christian Wallumrød, John Tilbury, Sunn 0))) etc…

Is their sound “Norwegian”?
It may be hard to tell for us on “the inside”, being Norwegians ourselves, but the aesthetics may be perceived as “Norwegian-sounding” because of the clear tonality (you won´t find the broad jazz-type harmonies in Splashgirl’s music, rather there is a reference to modern classical music and composers like Shostakovich and Arvo Pärt, as well as experimental rock), but at the same time, Splashgirl’s sound is quite warm, unlike what´s initially been known as a Norwegian sound. The sound of our new record Pressure (release on Hubro in august) is far away from the cool, distant sound of the ECM-records that started the notion of a Norwegian/Scandinavian sound. If there is something intrinsically Norwegian about our music, it’s maybe the openness and willingness to concentrate on very few musical elements at the time.

How do they describe their music and what can people expect from their upcoming live show in London?
Our music is open, honest and mostly slow moving, giving the audience a chance to take part in our sonic landscape and hopefully find it a nice place to be. People can expect a dynamic show, ranging from low-key drone textures to intense walls of sound, all within the context of an instrumental, acoustic trio.

Exclusive Paul White interview

Paul White is one of our favourite producers here at Flomotion Radio. His imaginative and often cinematic productions fuse psychedelia with hip hop, funk and jazz.

Following a string of releases for One Handed Music, including the genre twisting classic debut “The Strange Dreams of Paul White”, he has also been responsible for a number of remixes for the likes of Mr. Beatnick, Natural Self, Mux Mool and Bullion.

2010 saw the release of his second album featuring Paul’s re-interpretations of original music by Swedish Pysche-rock guru S.T Mikael titled “Paul White and the Purple Brain”.

Nick Luscombe caught up with Paul to discuss this incredible piece of work on London’s sunny Southbank earlier this month.

Nick Luscombe on Late Junction, BBC Radio 3, 06/07/10

From Tuesday 6th July at 11:15pm on BBC Radio 3, Nick Luscombe hosts Late Junction, presenting an eclectic selection of sounds from around the globe including Afro Colombian champeta from the 1970s, electronica from Manchester’s Illum Sphere, a live recording by British bassist Dave Holland and a new album of remixes by Japanese producer Cornelius.

Radio and club DJ Nick Luscombe begins a two week stint in the Late Junction studio, kicking off tonight with West African music from Cheikh Lo and Toumani Diabate, contemporary British jazz from Neil Cowley and Dave Holland, and electronic sounds new and old, from Bernard Parmegiani’s 1975 Etude Elastique to the latest dubstep-influenced electronica from Manchester’s Illum Spehere and American producer Lorn.

From the archive we have a 1976 classic from Brazilian maverick Tom Ze and vintage champeta from the Northern coasts of Colombia, a recent compilation from Miles Cleret’s Soundway label. We’ll also be hearing tracks this week from the new album of remixes by Japanese producer Cornelius beginning tonight with his take on “I’d Rather Dance With You” by Kings of Convenience.

Nick Luscombe’s Flomotion Live celebrates its third summer as part of the Voices Across The World Festival (the annual celebration of tradition, diversity and innovation in vocal music from across the globe) at London’s Royal Opera House, with very special live sets from three young, London based female performers, each pushing soul music to new heights in the capital and beyond.

As Nick puts it: “I’m very excited about the night – it’s a real all-star line up. Natalie Williams’ brilliant vocals on one of my favourite Drum & Bass tracks of the last 5 years (Nu:tone’s “System”) blew me away when I first heard it, and everything I’ve heard from Fatima and Stac to date have been super cool and very creative. We are in for a memorable one for sure!”

Nick Luscombe and special guests will also be on hand to DJ throughout the evening.

Natalie Williams
Born and raised in Berlin to a Hungarian mother and British father, Natalie Williams realised her love for music, in particular jazz, at the age of 15, discovering her Dad’s (the poet John Hartley Williams) immense record collection. Her early influences included singers Nancy Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Aretha Franklin, and these legends inspired Natalie to pursue a career in singing.

In 1997 she decided to take her passion further by moving to London to study at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music & Drama, becoming the first person to study both classical and jazz singing on the undergraduate course. She has gone on to tour extensively across the globe, whilst here in the UK has appeared as a featured artist with Goldie, Bugz In The Attic, The Heritage Orchestra, Shy FX and Nu:tone.

Natalie has released three albums to date, the last of which (”Secret Garden”) has so far achieved 80,000 downloads. The first single from her soon to be released fourth album has already received great support from BBC 1Xtra and Kiss 100.

Stac
The artist otherwise known as Stacey Dowdeswell, began her career at the infamous Brit School (the same institution that spawned Amy Winehouse, Nash and former Flomotion performer Jamie Woon).

Her first release, “Balls Bounce”, featured a stunning remix from Bonobo, and was followed up late last year with the anthemic “Glory”. Her debut album, “Same Old Thing” features cameos from young trumpet genius Matthew Halsall, label mate Scrimshire, The Heritage Orchestra string section and Stac’s very own 15 strong choir!

Stac’s biggest influences are Lewis Taylor, Erykah Badu and Jamie Lidell, but it’s Stac’s unique vocal style and song writing that makes her off-kilter and highly original soulful sound stand out.

Fatima
After featuring on many of last year’s biggest tracks including Shafiq Husayns ‘Lil Girl’, Floating Points ‘Peroration Five’, TettoryBad’s ‘Unite’ , FunkinEven’s ‘Kleer’ as well as live collaborations with I.G Culture’s Zen Badizm workshop, The Floating Points Ensemble and not to mentioned a recent live P.A with Slum Village, its plain to see why the Swedish born London resident is in such high demand! Enola: New Album & Exclusive Mix

Alone, the excellent debut album by Enola, is out now on Initial Cuts. To celebrate the release, we’ve got an exclusive mix set from the man himself!

Enola is the new project of French DJ Matthieu Monnin, who used to be part of techno outfit Noirdegout. As Noirdegout they were discovered by Initial Cuts, who released 2 superb EPs, Late Night Cities and A Frog On The Beach.

Now Matthieu is on his own, and he’s found his sound: melodious techno, with strong 90s techno influences, but with today’s production values.

The first EP extracted from the album, Words in a Bottle, features a wonderful remix by rising star Rodriguez Jr, and the second one, Lost in Shibuya, includes a remix by Swiss deep houser Quarion of Drumpoet Community.
