The Use of Flea Comb

I brush my dogs with a flea comb, but I have never caught any fleas with it. It picks up flea poop, and is great for combing out loose hair, even ticks, but never a flea. I KNOW my dog has fleas(note the flea poop), so that’s not it.

You who brush your dogs with a flea comb and actually catch fleas, what’s your technique? How do you do it? Do you do it in a definate pattern(e.g. head to tail).
Thanks in advance!

Effective flea comb

You might have to trim the fur to comb effectively for fleas:

http://www.fleascontrol.com/flea-combs.htm

Another thing you can do is to comb while you’re giving your dog a bath and dab some baby oil on the comb before you start combing through the fur. That will be sticky and make it harder for fleas to escape.

Flea Comb Advantage

However, combing is not a very effective way to get rid of fleas. It doesn’t get rid of the eggs or the larva, which live around your house and not on the dog. You can read about all kinds of ways to get rid of them at:

We adopted a cat, female, and she was born on April 10th. Is she old enough for flea treatment?

Yes, she is old enough. Be sure to get the flea meds that are recommended by your vet. Many of the over the counter flea products are ineffective and harmful. Hartz products are very bad and many animals have suffered and many have died.

Your cat should also be treated for tapeworms and your vet can provide the appropriate worming medicine.

good luck!

Dealing with Fleas

No pets now in home. Only two adults highly allergic to flea bites. The home is without fleas except for one room where we put diatomaceous earth and sprayed, but due to storage of furniture and boxes, we could not get the poison into all of the areas of the room. We will probably have to brave the fleas and go back in to spray, but how long will they live if we just leave the door closed?

Meptastic is right, is not the live ones, it is the eggs that hatch and the cycle does not need hosts to feed on to keep producing those fleas are prolly living in your boxes and fabric furniture.

The average life span of an adult flea is probably about 6 weeks – but fleas can live as long as a year under certain conditions. A female flea can lay 20 to 28 eggs a day. She may lay several hundred eggs over her life span. These eggs fall off the pet and develop where they land. They are small and can even develop in the cracks in wood floors or other small crevices. A larvae hatches from the flea egg. It takes as few as 9 days to as long as 200 days to go through its growth stages. At this time is forms a pupae and waits for the right time to hatch.

Environment of Fleas

Fleas prefer temperatures of 65 to 80 degrees and humidity of 75 to 85 per cent. This range determines the period of time that fleas are a problem in your particular area. For some areas of the country, this is all year. In others, the flea season is relatively short. It is estimated that for every adult flea found on the pet, there are about 10 developing fleas in the pet’s environment.

In other words, you need Orkin to come in a take care of this, and then come back every two weeks for a couple months to go ove the room again. If you vacum, you can get eggs in the works of your cleaner, emptying the bag wont help rid the fleas and then if you vacum into another room it just spreads them back into a new area.

My neighbor doesn’t give her indoor cats flea meds because they don’t go outside, but I’m thinking that they could probably get them anyway because we go outside. What’s your opinion? Thanks!
brutusmom – which flea med would you recommend?

You have the right idea……

Unless the animals live in a “bubble”, they’ll be subjected to whatever anyone or any animal brings into the house……..diseases ( need shots ), fleas ( need protection )……and once the fleas are IN the house, it’s very difficult to get rid of them. Much better to PREVENT them, than to have to “deal” with them later.

You may want to “discuss” this with your neighbor……..I have 11 indoor cats and they’ve all been “treated”……..I’ve been through the “flea eradication” process, and it’s not any fun……plus takes awhile to completely get rid of them, once they’ve “established” themselves.

It takes 3 WEEKS for an egg to become an “egg laying adult”, so it takes quite awhile to get rid of ALL OF THEM……..

Hope this helps……….Good luck.

You can also find cat flea medication or fleas control here.

Where Do Fleas Live?

Fleas live on their host, but eggs can be left both on the host and in the host’s bedding. The eggs that are left on the host will fall off and accumulate in beds, clothes, carpets, cars, and anyplace that the host visits. These eggs normally hatch in 1-2 weeks, after which the fleas emerge as larvae that can live in carpets (learn how to get rid of carpet fleas) and bedding for up to 200 days before transforming into legless pupae. If conditions are still not quite right, the pupae can sit dormant for over a year before transforming into an adult! This means that many generations of flea eggs can accumulate and lead to a mass-infestation! The first step after infestation is to clean everything that has come into contact with the infested persons or animals in order to remove as many eggs and larvae as possible. This section will walk you through this process.
