I was on my way to deliver a seminar recently and came to a stop at a red light behind a truck. In very large letters on the back of the truck were the words “Do one thing really, really well”.

Do you know what that one thing is that you do extremely well and have a natural talent for? That thing that people say “How do you do that? You make it look so easy.”

You have a natural talent, ability and passion for that one thing – yet you may not recognize it in yourself. It’s the ability that seems to come so naturally to you, while others really struggle with it.

What is the one thing you do really, really well that no one else could do exactly the way you do? By promising to do one thing really well, you can gain an edge in your marketplace.

In this economy, it’s very important for your business to have a unique product or service niche. You need to be able to very clearly answer the question “what’s the specific advantage of your service, program or product” in ways that make people automatically want to buy.

You can leverage a specialized business in so many ways that you can’t for a general business. Offering a specific advantage to prospects and clients makes your marketing and selling so much easier.

Are you specialized enough?

By promising to do one thing extremely well for a very specific segment of your market, you’ll have a very good chance of gaining the increased credibility and trust that will lead to more sales. You’ll be able to add more value instead of just your time so you can make more money with fewer transactions.

Stake your claim in the niche you really want to serve, and do just one thing really, really well.

You may have noticed that the internet has sparked this trend called “Personal Branding“. Branding identifies and differentiates you, your business, and your products and services so you stand out from the crowd, get noticed – and get hired.

Personal Branding can be the most powerful tool for success in your self-marketing toolkit. It involves identifying your key strengths and expertise, identifying the real needs that you can meet for your ideal clients, and then communicating your message consistently in many different ways.

You can identify, package and market who you are to build a personal brand that leads to business growth, influence, and income.

Here are three key things you need to develop a strong personal brand:

1. A clear, unique strength, talent, or expertise.

Get clear on your personal strengths, talents, values, and core area of expertise. Understand how you connect best with people. Consider what your target audience needs and wants, and then identify the value and the experience that you can deliver to meet those needs and wants. Communicate in ways that reach into the hearts and minds of your target audience and connect with their core values and deepest desires.

2. An ability to clearly articulate that uniqueness.

The personal branding process is about having self-awareness of your strengths and talents, and then letting everyone know about your gifts, talents, and experience. It’s about giving a clear impression of who you are, what you value, what you’re committed to, and how you can be counted upon to act. It’s about having clear, key marketing messages to convey in all of your communications with prospects and clients.

Your branding statement must provide a clear, concise view of your unique set of strengths and tell why you can do it better than anyone else. You need to be able to state clearly and unequivocally why you are different than everyone else, and what services you offer that make you unique and set you ahead of your competition.

3. The persistence to communicate your brand consistently through many channels.

Consistency is one of the keys to building a strong personal brand. Be aware of being consistent in every interaction you have, both in what you say and how you respond.

Your brand is developed over time by all the associations made, the expectations met, the messages communicated, and the services delivered. A great way to deliver a consistent message is through an email newsletter that you send on a regular basis to clients and prospects. You can write articles in your area of expertise so that over time people come to know and trust you. They’ll know what you stand for, how knowledgeable you are, and how you work with clients.

Establishing a professional brand is absolutely critical to long term, sustainable business growth. Branding your products and services will give you an edge over your competition and enhance your value to your target market.

In an overcrowded marketplace, if you’re not standing out, then you’re invisible. Personal branding will differentiate you, your business, and your products and services so that you stand out from the crowd, get noticed – and get hired.

Putting it Into Practice

Personal Branding is about knowing what you have to offer to your marketplace and what makes you different from everyone else so that you can stand out and be recognized and remembered. It is having a reputation for delivering a product, program, or service that delivers extreme value to your target market.

I was at my regular Friday morning yoga class recently and had a flash of inspiration about applying practices from yoga into business. I have been taking yoga classes for many, many years – long before it was as popular as it is today. Some of you may not know that I am a certified yoga teacher as well as a certified business coach and professional accountant. I taught yoga for many years when I lived on the west coast, but stopped when I moved back home across the country a few years ago.

So I thought – what better than to mix the concepts of yoga and business together?

In yoga, we bring our attention and awareness to what already exists, but may be just outside of our awareness right now. For example, as a yoga teacher I used phrases like, “bring your attention to your breath” or “relax into the flow of your out breath” or “find your straight spine”.

It got me thinking about how these concepts from yoga philosophy could translate into business. I love taking ideas from one discipline and applying them to another. If we used our attention in a different way in our business to focus on what’s already there waiting for us to notice, rather than trying to force what’s no longer working, we would get a different result.

For example, you could apply these statements to your business and:

• breathe into your wealth and prosperity
• connect with existing channels of abundance in alignment with your soul’s purpose
• relax into the real, deep connection and flow with yourself and your clients
• bring your attention to the continual flow of abundance that is always coming your way, rather than looking at what’s lacking
• align with the perfect, abundant business model that already exists as a structure for you and the new direction your business is going

Thinking this way implies that these things already exist for you…the flow, abundance and deep connection with yourself and your clients, and the perfect, simple, abundant business model. All you have to do is to notice, and then allow them in.

Stop looking at what’s missing in your business, and start looking for what already exists for you. Stop trying to force what’s no longer working in your sales and marketing and notice the doors that are now opening for you to step into.

Abundance can be easy. Just breathe into your wealth and prosperity – what could be simpler than that? Let go of struggle and allow more abundance, flow and connection into your business.

I work with women to fulfill their purpose and potential through entrepreneurship. Yet many of these women lose sight of why they went business in the first place, and start to lose their passion and enthusiasm over time.

One client I’ll call Sharon, came to be because she was at her wits end drowning in paperwork, emails, and to-do lists. She felt drained, overworked, and uninspired. She was in a place of not remembering why she had started her business in the first place or what she felt called to do.

Her reason for going into business was because she felt a strong call to make a contribution in the world. She didn’t know exactly how to do that in the way she imagined, so she just started with what she knew. This is where most women start, but they often get lost along the way.

By the time Sharon came to me, she was exhausted, ready to give up, and had very limited financial resources remaining.

Here’s what I had her do to turn her situation around quickly – and you can too!

One: get clear on what you feel most called to do right now
It may be time to hone in on your true purpose and talents more narrowly. Get very specific on the exact value you bring to your clients and the key challenges you can help them solve.

Two: get support
Mary was running a one-woman show in trying to do everything herself. One of the first things we did was to get her some simple administrative support for a few hours a week.

Three: simplify and streamline
Look at your service and program offerings for the clients and the services you can let go of that are no longer a passion for you, for the things that take a lot of your time but don’t reward you financially, and for places where you have a long list of offerings but no clear specialty. Eliminate at least half of what you’re currently doing that no longer serves you so you can focus on the work that truly fulfills inspires you.

So what happened with my client Sharon?

She immediately brought on an assistant for several hours a month which grew over time. She simplified by dropping one of her service offerings that didn’t bring a good financial reward, and completed with several clients who were draining her energy. She was then in a position to step into her greatness. Now she’s thriving and very happy and more fulfilled in her work.

I notice many women are hiding out from their life purpose and bigger vision of what’s possible them and for the world. They’re shrinking back instead of being the voice of encouragement and change.

If you find you’ve been hiding out, feeling disconnected from your prospects and clients, and going to overwhelm and confusion about what to do next, here are five things you can do right now. These five things will call on you to step out of your comfort zone and be at your best.

• Have an opinion
  This is not the time to be sitting on the fence. Be opinionated. Be contrarian. Be controversial. Let your personality shine through as a people get to know the real you.
• Be visible
  This is not the time to be hiding out. You need to step out of your comfort zone and be seen and heard. Your ‘small mind’ may be telling you to play it safe, but your big mind knows it’s your time to shine. The world desperately needs more teachers, healers and leaders with a strong message of hope and change.
• Share your thoughts in various media
  There are so many ways to get your message out now that there’s no excuse not to. Speaking to a group of people is one of the more powerful ways to share your message. Publishing a blog or articles is another great way. Bring your message forward to heal the planet.
• Redefine your market
  You may have noticed that the marketplace is shifting. What you may not know is that this means it’s the perfect time to redefine who it is you’re meant to serve and what your product and service offerings are. We can no more treat our business like a hobby and expect a continual stream of ideal clients unless we have a tightly defined target audience, specialty and niche.
• Start or join a mastermind group and work with the coach
  No one can make it through challenging times on their own and come out ahead. The ones who reach out for support will be the ones who not only make it through, but come through stronger, more purposeful and more profitable than ever. You need someone to challenge and inspire you. You need someone who will hold the possibility of your big dream even when you lose sight of it. To grow and change, you need to be around people who have ambition and are playing a bigger game. People who will motivate you to do your best and be your best and will call you on your stuff so you don’t get away with hiding out.

Service providers who are complacent or have mediocre services that no longer meet a pressing need are the ones who may not survive the shift unless they are ready to make changes.

This is the perfect time to make a lot of money doing what you love. There’s really no lack of money out there. It’s time to dream bigger and stop hiding out. Be around people who have ambition and will inspire and support you, and you’ll come out ahead.

I hope your year has been going well so far. I have just returned from 5 weeks on the west coast. I was very productive and got a lot of writing done while I was away (as well as lots of social time with friends!). I’ve been busy getting ready to release a new online seminar series on signing up more clients as well as a new educational program and workshop very soon.

Some of the work I do with my clients involves mapping out their strategy to add information products to their existing services. If you provide professional services, did you know that it may be hard for you to achieve the kind of financial freedom you might want without having passive income in your business plan?

I have some tips for you today about how you can map out your strategy for a more leveraged business model. I have learned some very good strategies to build a profitable business that I’d like to share with you.

These are the steps I took and that you can too to grow your business and leverage your expertise into sources of passive income:

• First, determine your ideal clients and the area you would like to specialize in that you are most experienced and passionate about. Start to carve out a niche for yourself where you can stand out as being very knowledgeable and experienced. One of the best areas to specialize in is something you have experienced and overcome or learned how to manage yourself.
• Next, grow your list and community of people who would like to hear from you on a regular basis. If you have a purpose and passion for your work, you can develop a group of lifetime followers who will sustain your success for years to come.
• Then, map out your passive income marketing funnel. Plan to create several information products that will allow potential clients to get to know you with less work on your part and little risk or cost to them before they try your higher priced services.
• You’ll want to learn about content development to leverage the content you already have from your talks, articles and workshops. Learn the many ways to package your information and sell it online. You can still earn active revenue from delivering your services and offering workshops and seminars, but if you’re like me, the passive sources are a lot more appealing because you can maintain your ideal lifestyle without working so many hours one-on-one or traveling all the time.
• Get into the habit of blocking out time to capture your ideas and writing regularly to develop information products to position yourself as a credible expert.
• Think bigger about your business. Learn to delegate, systematize and automate. Build your team to help you create your ‘information empire’.
• Collaboration is the new business model. Approach joint venture partners and collaborate with others to leverage your expertise into products and programs beyond what you could do on your own.

In this web 2.0 marketing world, it has become almost essential to create information products and coaching programs so that you have sources of passive and leveraged income. That way, you’re selling your ideas, not just your time, and you’re able to make more money than you could charging by the hour. You can add value for your clients, but you don’t have to be doing it one client at a time.
