The Shrouded Strangers have no pedigree. They are part east cost (DC, PA, VA), part west coast (CA) and their shelf of influences blends that nomadic vibe: equal parts psychedelic, freak-folk, garage-trip, with plenty of sing-a-longs. Some people say Gun Club, some say Link Wray. The dropped a cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Run Run Run” toward the end of their set and I believe they played Sonic Youth’s “Washing Machine” earlier on.

Their own catalogue is just as solid, from the over-tanned hum of “Featherbed” to the last-call shanty “Black Tie/White Atlas Shrugged”, to the endlessly strung out “(Don’t Look at The) Pink Lightning”.

In Buenos Aires, Argentina, a couple of lovers of dark and psychedelic rock ‘n roll and punk-rock, decided to form a band that, in a few years, has become one of the most active spanish rock acts. They left their hometown Buenos Aires to set their headquarters in Bilbao, Spain, from where they have developed an intense and prolific career.

So they have toured three continents, playing five tours in the UK, France, germany (including a perfromance at Popkomm ’08 that made us know them and sign them), Ireland, Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, South America and a USA tour (where they perfromed at Austin’s SXSW ’08).

After their debut “Songs & Circuits” (Liliput, ’07), this “Rising Mountains” confirms what that record already showed: the feeling of being in front of a true rock ‘n roll band, where attitude and lifestyle are the main points along with passion for their music beyond hypes and trends and devotion for the good job done, with the urgency of living fast and exploring all the corners before it’s too late.

Their musical influences, The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, early David Bowie or Television are what make their live perfromances a true parade of sweat and adrenaline. To pack this energy onto the album, they have made it their own way, recording at home, Bilbao, and mixing at New York’s NYHed Studios, where artists like Jon Spencer Blues Explosion have left an imprint, by the nads of Ivan Julian, guitarist of Richard hell and The Voidoids, and the man behind the sound of The Fleshtones, Heavy Trash or James Chance & The Contortions.

Their live set includes visuals and a technological twist that makes them a unique case of futurist garage-rock also influenced by the southamerican underground rock. A second starting point for a band that will give no quarter.

Fronted by indiepop blonde bombshell Tracy Tracy, The Primitives emerged from the independent scene of the mid-80s that spawned The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, The Wedding Present and Primal Scream. Their sound distilled the shimmering guitar jangle of the Byrds, the buzzsaw style of The Ramones and 60′s girl group melodies into two and a half minute pop gems. Regular session guests on John Peel’s radio show, with many an appearance in his Festive Fifty, their career was boosted / hindered when Morrissey named them as one of his favourite bands.

A widely acclaimed first album, Lovely, made them the UK’s indie darlings, while the huge success of the single ‘Crash’ saw them cross over to a mass audience. Further chart success followed, along with two more studio albums, Pure and Galore, plus extensive tours of Europe and the US, before the band called it a day in 1992. Guitarist Paul Court and drummer Tig Williams continued to work together on various musical projects throughout most of 1990s, while Tracy contributed vocals to Band of Holy Joy amongst others, and also recorded with several outfits working in the dance music field. In 2008, Mojo Magazine voted the Primitives’ second single “Really Stupid” one of the Top 40 UK indie singles of all time.

The band were reunited in 2009 by the untimely passing of their original bass player Steve Dullaghan, reforming to play a show in his memory later that year in their home town of Coventry; their first show together for 17 years. Bolstered by its success they went on to tour the UK in April 2010, receiving a rapturous response, followed by a headline slot at the Indietracks festival and shows in the US and Spain.

Although Lee has been djing since his first high-school dance, his talents and accomplishments have reached beyond the scope of dance music. Lee Kalt is also a painter, and his pre 9/11 painting of two lightning bolts hitting the twin towers hung in the Norman Rockwell museum, in Stockbridge, MA.
Before finishing high school, Lee had written, produced, and starred in his own off-Broadway musical, called “Inappropriate.” The musical ran off-Broadway in New York City for 2 years and was also showcased in Los Angels, where it received rave reviews and the interest of several Hollywood producers for film options.

Lee stands out as an artist looking to bring the highest levels of production to his work, crediting Danny Tenaglia, Deep Dish, Loco Dice and Timo Mass, as the main influences for his musical style today. He is the driving force behind LK RECORDS and all of the artists it represents. In the the summer of 2007 Lee signed his vocal house classic ” Special K” feat. Missus M to Erick Morillo’s prestigious Subliminal Records. “Special K” proved to be one of the biggest records not only in Ibiza but in 2007- it was “Essential Tune of the Week” on Pete Tong’s BBC Radio 1 show The Essential Mix, and selected as “Tune of 2007” by Erick Morillo in DJ Mag’s Top 100 issue. This summer “Never Lose Control” proved to be one of the biggest records in Ibiza for the second time. Look out for his next hit record soon to be released.

Featured Track: Thee Oh Sees-AA Warm Breeze

Thee Oh Sees are the latest incarnation of songwriter, singer, and guitarist John Dwyer’s ever-evolving pop-folk psychedelic group. Dwyer, who hails from Providence, RI, has been active on the San Francisco indie scene since the late ’90s, working with several bands, and he formed OCS (which is an acronym for Orinoka Crash Suite, Orange County Sound, or whatever Dwyer decided it was on any given day) initially as a vehicle for the experimental instrumentals he was producing in his home studio.

In time OCS morphed into an actual band, and worked under the usual flurry of names, most notably as the Oh Sees or the Ohsees, and eventually as Thee Oh Sees, featuring Dwyer on guitar and vocals, Brigid Dawson on vocals and tambourine, Petey Dammit (sometimes listed as Petey Dammit!) on bass, and Mike Shoun on drums.

Sounding a bit like the Mamas & the Papas run through a seriously bent garage blender, the band signed with the German Tomlab label and released Sucks Blood in 2007 and The Master’s Bedroom Is Worth Spending a Night In in 2008.

Thee Oh Sees second full-length effort Help appeared in 2009 and featured a bit of a garage rock vibe mixed with the band’s psych-pop sound. The album Warm Slime followed in 2010.

Thee Oh Sees pulled double duty the following year, offering the pop-leaning Castlemania in June, followed in November by the heavier, wilder Carrion Crawler/The Dream, also the band’s first recording with second drummer Lars Finberg (The Intelligence).

Featured Track: The Beautiful View-The Horseman

Listening to the new songs from the San Diego based quartet The Beautiful View will make you think “sounds like this should be on the radio”, which isn’t a bad thing in this case. There’s a familiarity that the band brings to the table; an honesty; unpretentious, politically incorrect and (as a contrast to the current San Diego scene) they are as “un-indie” as a band can be —dressed in Gucci shoes, tailored clothes and their shows often end in a boisterous conversation at the back bar with a tab worth of shots as long as your arm.

The band blends traditional rock genres from Blondie and even Duran Duran with modern rock bands like The Killers and Franz Ferdinand and even Interpol. For some reason the band conjures up images from the Miami night club scene in Scarface and perhaps that’s because they grew up ten miles from the border in Chula Vista, a city close enough to the Tijuana headlines of cartel drug wars.

And Chula Vista (translation; Beautiful View) has a surprisingly rich tradition of successful artists in bands ranging from “indie” Black Heart Procession, “punk” The Zeros, and “rock” The Dragons and “hardcore” P.O.D. Those influences ring true beneath the rich vocals of Aaron Magnan, the tasteful leads of Adrienne Cordero and the masterful rhythm section of bassist Paul Rich and drummer Duane Allan. Each of them taking a prominent role in the group’s layered songwriting and performances.

Shawnee Taylor was born with music in her veins. A product of parents who each had their own successful music careers, Shawnee was surrounded by music from birth, and raised in a household that always had different genres of music playing within it.

At only sixteen years of age, it was a random meeting with DJ Romain that saw the beginning of Shawnee’s recording career, and it was through this initial set of collaborations, first with the RoMatt production team (DJ Romain and Matt Echols), as well as with Richard Grey, Kid Crème, DJ Todd Terry, and Sandy Rivera, that her voice first began to become recognized in House music.

“I think at the time, my voice was new, and as a singer-songwriter, when I sing there is an emotional connection that comes through because  those are my words, my feelings that I am singing. I also understood what the team was trying to create, which allowed me to bring more to the table than just my voice. Even after all of these years, I am still humbled by the amazing producers and artists who have reached out to work with me because of how much they value what I can offer to any collaboration.”

NY metropolitan area pop group Nova Social has been active in New York’s indie underground for over ten years. Helmed by singer/multi-instrumentalist David Nagler and guitarist/programmer Thom Soriano, the group solidifies the electronic and dance music-influenced sound of their 2009 self-titled EP on their new full-length, For Any Inconvenience, and takes it to another level courtesy of the duo’s ambitious and compelling pop songwriting.

For Any Inconvenience was produced by Nova Social. Strings and vocals were recorded in Brooklyn by Godfrey Diamond, who the band tracked down because of his classic disco-era productions (Bionic Boogie, Andrea True Connection’s “More, More, More”), and the album was mixed by long-time collaborator D. James Goodwin (Santigold, Devo, Norah Jones) at The Isokon in Woodstock, NY.

Singer David Nagler plays guitar and piano in John Wesley Harding & The English UK, where his involvement in the “Cabinet of Wonders” variety shows have led to him sharing the stage with Rosanne Cash, Andrew Bird, Ted Leo, A.C. Newman (of The New Pornographers), Andrew VanWyngarden (of MGMT), and more. He served as musical director and co-producer on Chris Mills’ acclaimed orchestral pop release The Wall to Wall Sessions (Ernest Jenning Record Co.), which led to his inclusion in The L Magazine’s “Ultimate Brooklyn Supergroup,” and he provided choral arrangements for the Mekons’ Jon Langford’s Skull Orchard Revisited (Verse Chorus Press/Bloodshot Records), with members of the Burlington Welsh Male Chorus.

Staedler & Waldorf are a squelchy Welshy drum ‘n’ breaks band with more styles than a Run Run Shaw flick. Rough in the jungle, the dancehall and the house, S&W growl from the stalls, making their namesake look like a rubbish salad and a biro that never works when you’re trying to write a ‘to do’ list. This is “music that messes you on the dancefloor” according to a post on their myspace. This is grimy, pulsating, electronica from the home of Clarke’s pies and Shirley Bassey.

Steve Jones has been producing music for more than 20 years, his first five releases as Groovy Onion all placed in the top 5 in the dance chart and secured remix projects for Lee Coombes.

Paul Smith and Steve Jones have worked together on various projects for over nine years. As DBOOGA, they played Glastonbury for 3 years running and now, as Staedler & Waldorf, they’ve teamed up with Lacey Chaiff, and performed for pigs all around space with the equivalent eclecticism of a George Clinton hairdo.

They’ve contributed to Flash Games, End of Nightmares and jingle ballistics, been commissioned by Hollyoaks In The City, O’Neil and Free Sport on 4 and recently signed to fair trade label aardvark records, and are ready to face the impending Jim Henson lawsuit

At the age of 5, Ammoye knew her calling was to perform music.

Ammoye’s musical style and song writing was deeply influenced by her upbringing. She was born and raised by her grandparents in Clarendon, Jamaica where life presented its own unique trials and tribulations. She found solace from a young age by singing in the church choir, as well as at the top of her favourite mango tree in the family backyard, where she made regular appearances on Sunday afternoons and regaled the neighbourhood with her latest songs and poems.

Jason Sloan is a new media artist working from Baltimore, Md. His work explores various aspects of spirituality and it’s connection to life, death, memory, religion and our transitory time on earth.

Through his performances, installations, audio environments, video work, network actions and sound recordings, he examines the need for transcendence beyond the body through a vehicle of visual ritual and aural stimulation. With this dialog, Sloan feels an urgency to evoke a collective experience between the viewer, listener and artist that can bridge the gap between the physical and non-physical world.

The focus of this transcendence is not to conform to any current religious trends or beliefs, but to take a non-dogmatic approach of artistic and intellectual inquiry that explores the basic human need for some type of spiritual alignment or wholeness.
