Naga aka Balazs Fejer started his music career in the end-of-eighties’ alternative era, debuting at Nap-Nap fest with his group Ivan Lendül. He was co-founder of the famous hungarian pirate radio called Tilos.

In the mid nineties he edited the techno-related column of Törökfürdo magazine (Turkish bath), and around the same time graduated as cultural anthropologist. An essay on the acid age turned him towards electronic music. Naga has been on the dance scene as dj since 1994.

At the time he became a recognized dj in Budapest with his remarkable techno sets. While dub, breakbeat, tribal and deep proghouse have become part of his style in the past few years, “Naga-fans” weren’t disappointed by the eclectic sets he played.

Although generally lumped into the blues-rock arena, Tim “Too Slim” Langford and his band fall into whatever category a combination of Tom Petty, Creedence and ZZ Top would create.

Perhaps swampy Americana is closer to the trio’s sound, especially on this terrific album. Slim’s been at it for quite a while; nearly two decades, yielding a dozen or so releases when this disc appeared in 2007. But that hard work has paid off, big time.

Langford writes melodies and especially lyrics that show him to be an under the radar talent who has gone unnoticed for too long. Vocally his gruff voice is somewhat similar to Top’s Billy Gibbons and this album is a good example of what that Texas band might have sounded like if they hadn’t cheesed out with synths and dance pop in the ’80s.

Slim’s evocative words and distinctive growling vocals bring surprising introspective depth to music that could easily deteriorate to bar band grind status. This album is several levels above that. Even with all the miles already on Slim’s life odometer, there is plenty of gas left in his tank. His journeyman experience makes these songs resonate more passionately than what’s on the surface and connect on a deeper level.

Staedler & Waldorf are a squelchy Welshy drum ‘n’ breaks band with more styles than a Run Run Shaw flick. Rough in the jungle, the dancehall and the house, S&W growl from the stalls, making their namesake look like a rubbish salad and a biro that never works when you’re trying to write a ‘to do’ list. This is “music that f*cks you on the dancefloor” according to a post on their myspace. This is grimy, pulsating, electronica from the home of Clarke’s pies and Shirley Bassey.

Steve Jones has been producing music for more than 20 years, his first five releases as Groovy Onion all placed in the top 5 in the dance chart and secured remix projects for Lee Coombes.

Paul Smith and Steve Jones have worked together on various projects for over nine years. As DBOOGA, they played Glastonbury for 3 years running and now, as Staedler & Waldorf, they’ve teamed up with Lacey Chaiff, and performed for pigs all around space with the equivalent eclecticism of a George Clinton hairdo.

Kraak & Smaak formed in 2003 through a series of chance meetings, and have been winning over audiences all over Europe with their powerful debut album and energy-charged live shows.

Zito is that rare new artist who is completely in synch with the contemporary music scene, while at the same time having a lifetime’s worth of experience to draw from that informs his music with soul, depth and lasting appeal that grows with repeated listening.

This album is a dream come true for me. I’ve been writing songs, practicing guitar night and day and singing for most of my life. I’ve spent a lot of time in my mind, hoping for the day I would get the chance to record my songs with great musicians in a real studio with a real producer for a real record label. With all that, I couldn’t have been prepared for the magic that has taken place while making “Today.”

I love these songs. They’re my life, my feelings, my being and my craziness. But most of all they’re my awareness. I’m not sure where these songs come from, but I’m thrilled they came to me to write. From a young kid in St. Louis listening to everything I could find and later moving to Texas, music has been everything. My influences are so vast: the spirituality of Hendrix, the purism of Clapton, the passion of Stevie Ray Vaughan, the reckless abandon of Van Halen. I also love the singers and songwriters, the real voices: Johnny Cash, Neil Young, John Prine, Shelby Lynne, Lyle Lovett, Mick Jagger, Tina Turner and John Hiatt —there are so many.

All of it went into “Today.” It’s what I have sounded like in my mind forever. It’s a journey through a life that has just really begun. One of some bad choices, wrong thinking but then, thankfully, waking up. A time of love lost and love found inside myself. I have discovered that everything happens for a reason, and the trick is learning to trust the journey.

“Sunday Jazz”

Dee first became interested in guitar while in elementary school. One of his classmates could listen to a song on the radio and play it back on his guitar. Watching his classmate play fascinated Dee and he wanted to emulate his classmate and started taking lessons with the hopes of one day being able to play like B.B. King.

Dee continued to advance with his playing skills and while still in high school and after college, he decided to form a short lived R&B group before he decided he wanted create an album featuring him on guitar, and teamed up with saxophonist Gentry Shelby to form ’Shelby Brown’.

Since then he has moved on to his solo project ’No Time to Waste’ where his skills as a guitarist, composer, producer and arranger were showcased, for the first time. Brown’s long-time friend & producer Gerald Mitchell of Los Hermanos helped him achieve a sound targeted for Smooth Jazz listeners as guitar and saxophone leads were equally balanced. The Hermit’s story is one of musical evolution and creative growth. Three albums and multiple tours stretching across almost a decade for founder Hamish Thomson have seen The Hermit’s sound change and evolve, whilst bonds with trusted band-mates Jon Frederiksen (bass), Robert Mitchell (keyboards), and Duane Murrin (guitars) have been strengthened and new vocalist Red welcomed into the fold.

Founded in the year 2000 by Vancouver drummer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Thomson, The Hermit began life as a solo electronic project “Flying out of Solitude”. A successful independent release led to multiple West Coast Music Award nominations and a label deal with Nettwerk Records.

On the 2005 follow-up “Wonderment”, Thomson once again acted as Producer, but this time captured the essence of a diverse pool of musicians and vocalists, garnering The Hermit an Indie Award for “Favourite Electronica Artist” at Canadian Music Week 2006 and a #1 chart placing on Bravo TV’s Video Countdown with “Sir Real”

Building on the collaborative group dynamic that had grown out of touring “Wonderment”, the now five piece group began work on their third album in 2008 “Turn Up (The Stereo)” and 11 shimmering songs about twisted relationships, love, loss, dreams and desire was release in 2009.

“Senseless War”

Teshome Mitiku’s career stretches back to Addis Ababa, where he began performing at local schools and nightclubs when he was just a teenager.

In the late 60’s, Teshome (singer/keyboard), Theodros “Teddy” Mitiku (alto saxophone), Tamrat Ferendji (trumpet), Fekade Amde-Meskel (bass), Tesfaye Mekonnen (drums), Alula Yohannes (guitar) and Seifu Yohannes (singer) joined to form the influential Soul Ekos Band. The band released numerous songs, including 4 tracks written by Teshome like Gara Ser New Betesh, Yezemed Yebada, Mot Adeladlogn and Hasabe.

Teshome fled to Sweden at the peak of his musical career in 1969 after the government endorsed a strict, mandatory night curfew, which prevented him from performing at local venues, and enrolled at the Music Conservatory in Malmo and later received his Masters of Arts in Sociology, and later pursued a PhD in Sociology from Lund University.

During a brief visit in the 80’s to the United States, Teshome collaborated with the Admas Band and released “Teshome Mitiku and His Experience,” an album full of jazzy tracks like Mengezem Hulgezem and Almazeye, and in 1995, Teshome relocated to the United States and released the critically acclaimed album “Yegna Neger” with favorite tracks like Photoyen Ayechew and Che Belew.

In an industry where hype often covers artistic mediocrity, Noel “King Sporty” Williams is a rarity- an entertainer whose work is actually better known than his name. As a deejay his early recordings for legendary Jamaican label Studio One are some of the most sought after by collectors and lovers of reggae music’s golden era. His songwriting skills have landed him a place in pop music history as author of “Buffalo Soldier”, one of reggae icon Bob Marley’s biggest international hits. His innovation as a producer is part of the foundation of Miami’s signature bass and disco sounds. His business instinct has also served him well in an industry where the best known artists are often the last ones to be paid. King Sporty has been recording and releasing music on his own Konduko and Tashamba music labels for more than three decades allowing him to be one of the few longstanding entertainers to truly be master of his own artistry.

King Sporty’s multi-faceted skills were initially honed in his homeland of Jamaica. Born in small- town Port Antonio, Sporty developed his early sound by working the Kingston discos. His experiences there stood him in good stead once he came to Miami and founded International Sounds and Films Productions. King Sporty is a leader when it comes to club sounds, experimenting with electronica and vocoders a full decade before they hit the mainstream. He has recorded club hits under several aliases including Cybermon and the Extras. In addition, he lent his production talents to a variety of other artists like Ernest Ranglin, Anthony Watson, Connie Case, and his wife, r&b legend Betty Wright. He also continues to release his own reggae records as King Sporty, including the sought after 1976 classic Deep Reggae Roots.

Today, for the first time ever, the work of Noel “King Sporty” Williams, producer, writer, and entertainer will be available legally to digital consumers. His vast catalog of music from his two labels Konduko and Tashamba records is being released digitally via the Independent Online Distribution Alliance (IODA). Stephanie Cooke is a singer/songwriter whose roots are based in urban Newark, NJ. Born and raised there, she grew up in church like many in the music industry, and found her beginnings in the choir and in small groups as she developed her singing and arranging skills. She wrote her first song under pressure to impress a would be manager who told her that only the artists who could write these days would be successful. That song got recognition at ASCAP and was featured at a songwriter’s workshop where it received rave reviews. This was a stepping-stone in her career as all the publishers at the workshop became interested in hearing what she had to offer. Less that one year later she was writing, arranging and doing background vocals on many major projects and being called upon by many labels to offer songs.

Within eighteen months, she was flaunting a publishing deal that lead to her relationship with producers such as Jermaine Dupri, Soul Shock and Carlin, All-Star, DJ Enuff, and the list goes on. During this time she wrote for such artists as Aretha Franklin, Jody Watley, Tyrese and numerous new comers even rearranging song for remixes for the Braxtons and SWV.

For the last ten years she has made her home as an artist in dance music recording many songs on Kingstreet Sounds. This relationship yielded a full length album which was released in 2003. the album is a combination of many of the songs she recorded over the years along with a few new things.

These days, Stephanie is reaching new heights as an artist and has come into her own on the stage. New relationships and circles of producers, a new home label and extended family have taken her career as a writer and performer to another level. She’s currently working on a new album with West End Records with Blaze leading the list of great producers promised to appear on the project. To date, Luke Temple has been unconfined by genre. His full-length debut Hold a Match for a Gasoline World presented heartfelt folk tunes and expansive pop numbers filtered through a unique outsider perspective. Last year’s follow-up Snowbeast was an avant statement full of interwoven light and dark imagery recorded entirely in his Brooklyn bedroom.

Developed over a two-month period of stream-of-consciousness recording in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Luke’s self-titled debut under his new moniker Here We Go Magic is a remarkable departure from his signature singer-songwriter material. Luke recorded the album at home using analog synths, a cassette 4-track, and his trusty SM-57 mic, colouring the sound with warmth and creating textures you want to wrap yourself in.

The album opens with the trance-inducing polyrhythms and gorgeous multi-layered vocals of “Only Pieces. ” What follows is an album oozing with sounds maternal and subconscious…like floating in amniotic fluid, ripe, hiccup-y and desperate to emerge. Many of the songs pulse with infectious afro-beat and kraut-rock influenced grooves, calling to mind classic albums like Remain in Light and Graceland. In contrast, the instrumental tracks conjure mystical introspective landscapes reminiscent of Popol Vuh’s unforgettable ambiance.

Despite the album’s murky aquatic underpinnings it’s hard to resist shakin what you got to ebullient blissed-out tracks like “Fangala” and “Tunnelvision.” The album closes with “Everything’s Big”, a bleak commentary on weakness and fear birthed of opulence and gluttony. Luke’s fragile tenor delivers this absurd carnival waltz with the fervor and abandon of a teetotaler under the influence, never breaking the spell of the album’s mood of rejuvenation and release.

Like many bands before them, School of Seven Bells were born as the result of a late-night revelation. Benjamin Curtis connected with sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza in 2004 while their bands—Secret Machines and On-Air Library!, respectively—were on tour. While watching PBS at 3am, Alejandra caught a show about the School of Seven Bells: a mythical South American pickpocket academy that may or may not have existed in the ‘80s. The idea of seven minds working as one appealed to her, as did the phrase’s cryptic musicality, and a creative spark ignited.

By the end of 2006, Curtis and the Deheza sisters had completely disappeared into School of Seven Bells. From the outset, it was clear that the trio’s music transcended the usual genre restrictions. Early recordings popped up on Sonic Cathedral, Table of Elements, and Suicide Squeeze, then Blonde Redhead tapped School of Seven Bells for a tour. Remixes came from Cocteau Twins’ Robin Guthrie and Prefuse 73, whose “Class of 73 Bells,” a re-imagining of SVIIB’s “Iamundernodisguise,” ended up on his 2007 album Preparations (Warp).

School of Seven Bells’ music is full of tensions—Curtis’ gentle guitars wrap around jagged beats; silky vocals hide behind grumpy, alien synthesizers—but the resulting songs are effortlessly cohesive, and insidiously catchy. Elements of dream-pop, Afrobeat, IDM, and 4AD’s gauzier moments provide a constantly shifting frame for the Dehezas’ lyrics, which they write as mysterious missives between the School’s imaginary seven members. On their Ghostly debut, Alpinisms, we get the impression that the three seasoned musicians have taken up full-time residence in a dizzying fantasy world; they move freely within the realm of pickpockets and dreamers, composing a soundtrack according to their own odd, beautiful logic.

Basically Blue Tribe is two people; David Evans and Jimmy Waldo. We work with a lot of other talented people such as Don Jones, Hossam Ramzey, Judy Crescenzo, Steven Rosen, Star Nayea and Tamara Podemsky to name a few.

We have traveled thousands of miles to get some of these vocalists and musicians. We went to Nepal and recorded monks in monasteries at the foothills of the Himalayas and street musicians in Kathmandu. We recorded in the tombs and pryamids of Egypt (eventually thrown out by guards carrying machines guns!), in studios in Bangkok, London, Cairo, Sante Fe, New York and of course in our own studio in Los Angeles.

Since we create music using voices and instruments from around the world, I guess we fall into the “World Music” category. The name “Blue Tribe” represents our music, not us. Earth is known as “the blue planet”, so “Blue Tribe” would refer to all the peoples who reside here.

Those were the words that would start a young girl on her incredible journey into the then unknown world of DJing. Jackie Christie was a mere 16 years old when she first stepped behind the instruments that would take her around the world — the infamous two turntables.

DJ Jackie Christie has graced the pages of almost every major U.S. dance music magazine and was the first female DJ on the cover of DJ Times. “I produced and Andrew arranged,” Hughes recalls. “It was a fantastic experience recording these guys, and on the plane coming home we thought how great it would be to make an orchestral chill-out record with these players.”

NoiseTrade is an artist driven site seeking to bring musicians and fans together, and was founded by musician Derek Webb, along with help from several friends, in the musical and related fields.
