My new group was doing hills tonight and with my Half Marathon a few days away I wanted to save my legs for it instead. I ran with some of my old group and we did a great pace and had fun running. It is interesting to see how much we have grown since we started and how much stronger we are when we run. I am now able to out of the gate run 2.4km in 12 minutes. I wasn’t even close to being able to do that 3 months ago.

With a week to the Green Thumb Half Marathon we were suppose to take it easy this weekend and according to our training schedule do nothing. I believe in Newton’s Law of Motion in regards to training “an object in motion will stay in motion”.
Do you take a week off before a race?
Today’s run was good. Large group of people and a new route. Started off good but I got winded going up the hill on 200 street. After all the hills I managed to fly down the long hill passing a few people. I was running with a friend from the previous group and we talked for the last 7k of the run. I still have not found my place in the new group but it will come with time.

Wow what a great run tonight. I always really enjoy my barefoot running more then other nights.
Prior to going out a friend said I was crossing my arms in front of me to much and to keep my arm motion to a minimum. I paid very close attention to my form and instead of wasting energy pumping my arms I saved it for my legs. I managed to shave 13 seconds off my pace which in a 5k is a lot.
The group was good. Lots of motivational people to keep you going. There is a variation on paces between the group so you can either go fast or slow based on how you feel.
Total Distance: 5.31 km
Total Time: 30:05
Avg Pace: 5:40 /km per minute
Avg Speed: 10.6 km/h

I went out with the new group tonight and off they went to Marathon Hill. They had a really face pace but I am use to that so I was able to keep up. The 5 hills went by quick and I was amazed at how many people were at the hill tonight. There had to be 40 or more people running up and down the hill. I would say I knew about half of them by first name. The only thing that worried me about the group is that they don’t follow the rules of cross walks very well where the last group were very structured when it came to lights and crossing the street.

Tonight was the last night for my first Half Marathon Clinic and reflecting back what a ride it has been. 3 months of intense training to get me where I am today. I am totally addicted to running! I count the minutes to when I can run again.
I want to thank my instructors Dennis and Ralf for doing a super job of motivating me, guiding me and being friends to commiserate with. I also want to thank my fellow runners who have taught me many lessons, been an inspiration and great friends. We all improved over the time and did it together. We should all be very proud of ourselves as we have done what most people do not or can not do.
I am eager to see what tomorrow’s group will be like and learning the subtle differences between my old group and new one.

This is my last week of my 1/2 marathon clinic which was preparing me for the Green Thumb Half Marathon. I do not have that race until March 13th but this week my group only does a 10k on Tuesday and a 6k on Wednesday. I think I will be joining a 1/2 marathon group already in progress and keep training for a half until later in the year when I will join the Marathon Group. In March I would have completed my goal of doing 2 half marathons this year and will only have one more goal of reaching a marathon. I have been considering doing the Royal Victorian Marathon as I have heard it is a great course and most people get their PB on it.

There are tons of caffeine added products on the market for runners and workouts in general that claim to give you a boost of energy. The danger with using caffeine is that it can cause you to be edgy, loose focus and max out your heart rate faster. The other disadvantage is caffeine is a stimulant which will cause you to experience a crash later. I do not believe in using caffeine for workouts what do you feel?

Instead of doing Fartlek’s tonight we voted to do hills. My calves were sensitivity from running with my Vibram’s from last night so I was able to do 4 hills. Our group has found that doing hills improves our pace and leg muscles more then Fartlek’s do. I am not sure if that is a phenomena everyone has but it seems to work for us. We did our hills back at Pain Hill so now my calves are even more sensitive.
Do you prefer hill training or Fartlek training?

Total Time: 57:13
Avg Pace: 8:22 /km per minute
