So why did Michelle Obama’s colorful and individual wardrobe for her European visit create such amazement and excitement? It is because the clothes she chose put an end to that most obnoxious of fashion non-statements: wife wear.
“Wives wear pink” was once a mantra for all those dutiful spouses standing by their men, whether as an appendix to a new role for the husband or as a unwilling partner to a confession of marital infidelity. Political wives in particular have had their parameters drawn around a smart suit and a tailored coat, a hat as an optional extra and nylons de rigeur (meaning rigorously applied).
Although Nancy Reagan famously wore red and Barbara Bush chose royal blue, the spirit has been the same since Jacqueline Kennedy set the gold standard of tailored coat and pillbox hat in 1961. That first lady may have looked her most glamorous in a silk headscarf, a pair of Capri pants, bare legs and ballerinas — but in public she was obliged to look “appropriate.” The ideological gulf between Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin in last year’s presidential election was reflected in their clothes: the trouser suit for the feminist Democrat; the suit, but mismatched for modernity, for the Republican vice-presidential hopeful.
At that point, no one looked much at Michelle Obama’s choice of clothes or read into it any message. Right up to that crowning moment of delirious joy on election night, when Mrs. Obama took to the stage with her family in a bright dress, half-covered with a cardigan, there were no expectations of her as a fashion icon. But with that woman-friendly “cardy,” turning her broad back on the mannish jacket, the future first lady was re-defining what was appropriate for the White House, for Buckingham Palace and for the daunting task of being photographed beside the former model and French presidential wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.
Whereas Mrs. Obama implied that the knit she pulled on over a scarlet and black Narciso Rodriguez dress in Chicago was merely to dispel the chill, her London appearances suggest otherwise. From a black cardigan with the British prime minister at 10 Downing Street to a sparkly knit from the sportswear brand J. Crew with his wife, the message was clear: not just that a White House wardrobe need not be expensive, but that it does not have to be formal. Only a string of pearls links Mrs. Obama with any kind of historic dressing up.
The cardigan — whether it was in black from the niche designer Azzedine Alaïa or in a bold plaid pattern from the Japanese Junya Watanabe — is a signal that powerful women no longer need to prove their strength by dressing shoulder to padded shoulder with men. The only jacket that the first lady wore in Europe was taut, short and again from Alaïa. For Mrs. Obama has broken with another cherished rule: that her wardrobe has to wave the national flag. Unlike Jacqueline Kennedy, who asked her sister Lee Radziwill to smuggle Givenchy gowns to New York and who had her milliner copy European styles, the New First Lady has embraced diversity. Her wardrobe has focused on Asian designers — often first-generation Americans — rather than the well-known names.
Thakoon Panichgul’s scarlet and black dress hit the headlines at the Democratic convention and the Thailand-born designer scored again in Strasbourg with the colorful coat and bow-necked dress that stood up defiantly against Mrs. Bruni-Sarkozy’s prim Dior outfit. Jason Wu, 26, born in Taiwan, was catapulted to fame when his one-shoulder white gown, embellished with organza flowers, was worn by the first lady at the inaugural balls. Where in the mix are Ralph Lauren or Calvin Klein — those pillars of American fashion, or Donna Karan, its female flag-waver? Only Michael Kors scored for the official first lady photograph, which caused controversy over Mrs. Obama’s bared arms (although Jacqueline Kennedy wore a similar dress).
Unlike Mrs. Sarkozy, whose natural style is streamlined and sporty but whose public wardrobe is built on France’s iconic fashion names, Mrs. Obama has eschewed the famous worldwide brands. Mr. Alaïa, who created the black dress with frothy frills that Mrs. Obama wore on Friday in Baden-Baden, is the ultimate insider’s designer. Etro and Moschino, the Italian labels that provided tops to go with pants, are also outside fashion’s “magic circle” of Armani, Gucci, Prada and Versace.
It is no secret where Mrs. Obama finds her wardrobe: via the Chicago boutique Ikram. But although she exudes pride both in being the wife of the first African-American president and as a mother of two girls, the only fashion message she seems eager to convey is that she is her own woman. Hats off (especially pill boxes and “My Fair Lady” millinery) to women who fought for equality by grabbing pantsuits from their male equals. But the first lady is making her own contribution to fashion history by dressing as a woman of strong character — rather than as a presidential wife.

Victoria's Secret Models at Fontainebleau Miami Beach

We just officially met spring a couple of weeks ago, but I'm already looking forward to summer! I don't know what it is, but my best memories always seem to be of summer days and nights. We delved into kaftans last week, but let's kick it up a notch with what's found under the kaftan more often than not — drum roll please — the swimsuit!
I am completely and totally against the whole going in the water in a tee shirt and shorts. That's a total fashion no-no, bow your head in shame if you're guilty. There are far too many flattering swimsuits for all body types to subject yourself to that type of punishment. I've been feverishly researching up-and-coming designer swimwear brands to find my perfect summer suit. But oddly enough, I didn't have to venture too far from home to find a line that was super "haute." If you're worried about your curves, or lack thereof, here's a crash course in finding a swimsuit to suit your figure: You don't have to be a size two to feel sexy and beach ready this summer — just pick a suit that plays up your assets.

If you're smaller on top, opt for the newly popular Brazilian bikini cuts as they tend to be smaller on top than traditional American brands. Bandeau styles and demi-bra underwire styles are also great. Those with fuller bust lines should opt for halter bikini styles which offer more support and have extra shelf bras. Stick to thicker, more comfortable straps. If you have a long torso, monokinis were made for you. The fabric cut-outs help to balance out your figure by visually breaking it up.

If you're shorter or have short legs, opt for mixing and matching fun separates. Wearing a bold-printed top with a plain solid bottom will draw the eye upward and help to visually lengthen your body. For fuller figures, tankinis with matching skirted bottoms are great. It offers you coverage while allowing you the freedom to wear a two-piece. One pieces are also great, but steer clear of frumpy ones with excess fabric. Opt for one with an interesting detail such as color blocking with dark, solid colors down each side of the torso and a bold color or pattern in the middle, or a deep V-neck with an interesting mesh inlay.

Now that you know what styles to wear for your body type, here are a few of the trends this season. As in dresses, one shoulder swimsuits and those with ruffle embellishments are all the rage. Monokinis are still on trend. Herve Leger's white monokini caught my eye. I'm not sure why but I am obsessed with white swimsuits this season! I wasn't wowed by the other styles in his line, but in this version I love the bodycon silhouette and tasteful cut-outs. Retro pieces, whether one pieces or bikinis are all the rage as well. I love the glamour of them and the throwback to pin-up fashion. Pictured above is a red bandeau cut, retro-style one piece. Showing you don't need to show a lot of skin to be uber sexy this summer.

Remember there are very few perfect bodies. Every woman has those parts of her body she wishes to conceal, but don't let that stop you from being comfortable and fashionable this summer season. Find a swimsuit that works for you, accessorize with lots of confidence and make it a summer to remember.

Michelle Obama's fashion gets criticized by the big timers

It was destined to happen. There are some people who are hatin' on Michelle Obama's fashion choices - who knew the haters would be within the fashion community?
From Jason Wu to Junya Watanabe, Michelle O has been donning designs by emerging designers and labels that only diehard fashionistas would know. But some people aren't to happy about that. According to our friends at the Huffington Post (via WWD), the big names in fashion are skeptical of her wardrobe - particularly the pieces she wore to her recent trip to Europe. Oscar de la Renta was at the front of the line when it came to the criticism:
"American fashion right now is struggling," says Oscar de la Renta. "I think I understand what [Obama and her advisers] are doing, but I don't think that is the right message at this particular point....I don't object to the fact that Mrs. Obama is wearing J. Crew to whatever because the diversity of America is what makes this country great. But there are a lot of great designers out there. I think it's wrong to go in one direction only."
Other big time designers like Vera Wang and Donna Karan also put their two cents in about Michelle, but they were more positive about it.
Wearing a gorgeous floral silk jacquard coat by Thakoon Michelle Obama (left) stands with fellow first lady fashionable counterpart, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, at Palais Rohan in Strasbourg, France, Friday, April 3, 2009. (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak)
My two cents? These big name designers are already accomplished and household names. Why not let the more obscure designers shine through? There's enough room in the fashion community for everyone to get a piece of the spotlight. The Obamas are all about change, so why not change the way the world thinks about fashion? Plus, Michelle is rockin' some serious luxury labels like Thakoon with the contemporary class of a in-vogue woman.
Under her Thakoon coat, Michelle donned a complimentary silk jacquard dress. Beautiful.

What are your thoughts? Do you think Michelle needs to start wearing less Wu and more Wang?
Credit: http://www.examiner.com/x-508-SF-Fashion-Examiner~y2009m4d6-Michelle-Obamas-fashion-gets-criticized-by-the-big-timers

Economic Hardships Extend To Modeling World

The seven young models never used to have this much time for the beach. They'd hop from cellphones to cabs to casting calls, posing and pouting for the catalogs during the height of Miami's modeling season. Times being what they are, they now soak the sorrow of an industry while lounging on beach towels in bikinis and board shorts, or playing volleyball. This game is informal, for not one but two of the annual local beach volleyball tournaments have been spiked. "Oh, the economy!" lamented 19-year-old Dani Dwyer, a wispy blond with a flat stomach in a black bikini.
Models, from left, Andrea Milner, Dani Dwyer and Eloisa Carvalho take a break in the South Beach, Florida sand as they ponder reduced demand for their services in mid-February 2009. (CHARLES TRAINOR JR./ MCT / February 19, 2009)

News that the Irene Marie Models agency was shutting its doors in South Beach only served to reaffirm that the nation's economic ugliness had tainted the world of glamour. Slumps in advertising have slashed revenue for newspapers and magazines, resulting in less work for agencies that book the models. Now, Irene Marie Models, which just two years ago had 850 full-time models, is considering filing for bankruptcy. For the working models, just like auto workers or bankers, the puncture of the boom times calls for these stunning bodies to lead more grounded lives. Truth be told, the models will admit, life is still pretty sweet.

The new economy means more walking and fewer cabs. Less time with waiters asking whether they prefer spring or tap, more times with a cashier asking whether they want paper or plastic. "Instead of having a $40 dinner, I'll get $100 worth of groceries to last me the week," Dwyer said. "And I'm not buying as much." "I am going shopping less, too!" said 22-year-old Andrea Milner. "I love shopping. This year, I've only gotten three pairs of shoes."

Behind them was the office of Irene Marie Models. From the street, it's easy to miss, particularly because tourists are devouring bacon cheeseburgers and strawberry shakes at the Johnny Rockets hamburger joint below. The few models still with the agency went through an alleyway to pick up their portfolios and try to find a new agent. Samuel Johnson, a Miami Beach resident who used to work for Irene Marie, headed to the beach to meet up with a group of models from New York, Brazil and Bulgaria.

This world is small and intimate. It is filled with twentysomething angst that could be fodder for TV — in fact, Dwyer has a coming MTV show, "

The economic effect can be seen at casting calls — much fewer now — where the models said they expected up to four times as many people trying out. Even more distressing, the department stores will likely take plus-size models, who charge less, to wear their clothing. "If people are still coming to Miami, they are also cutting their rates," said Eloisa Carvahlo, 5 feet 9 inches tall, 115 pounds, radiant black hair tied in a bun, in a flowery bikini. "Now, you just have to really take care of your money, and save it, because sometimes you don't know what is going to happen."

Credit By ROBERT SAMUELS McClatchy Newspapers
http://www.courant.com/features/hc-atworkmodelsapr06,0,3043608.story

Teens innovate to keep big night reasonable

There are many things that can ruin prom night -- rain, a curfew, bad dancing -- and the recession certainly doesn't help. Kayla Day, an 18-year-old senior at Riverside-Brookfield High School, found out three weeks ago that her mom lost her job at a non-profit agency. To say the least, it puts a damper on the big dance.
Kayla Day, 18, models her new prom dress for mom Cheryl at a fashion show earlier this month. The Riverside-Brookfield High School senior got the "gently used" gown for $55 in a silent auction. "It was a little miracle," Cheryl said.

"I'm still doing everything," she says, from hair to manicure to accessories, "but I'm looking for the cheapest way to get everything." Luckily, Kayla still has her part-time job as a restaurant hostess to help fund tickets to the dance. Even better, she found her dream dress at a fashion show and silent auction hosted by Paul Mitchell The School, 1225 S. Halsted, where students donated their "gently used" dresses. And Kayla paid just $55.

"It was a little miracle," says Kayla's mom Cheryl. Kayla wanted hot pink, and she found hot pink, with plenty of tulle. "I'm a single mom, trying to get Kayla through school and hold onto this house as long as I can," says Cheryl. At least Kayla won't have to worry about limo costs. Students will take the bus to prom, which is being held on a cruise ship downtown. It would be even cheaper to have the prom in the high school gym, but the deposit for the location was due more than a year ago.
Bailey Hadnott, 16 (from left), Lauren Holt, 18, and Bryne Hadnott, 17, try on dresses during the fashion show at Paul Mitchell The School. The three are students at Homewood-Flossmoor High School.

Pre-recession, a Seventeen magazine survey found that girls spent an average of nearly $800 on prom activities. "A lot of kids are thinking that it's really expensive," says Chrisse Neal, the faculty prom coordinator at Kenwood Academy, 5015 S. Blackstone. "And parents as well. In the next three months they have to turn around and send them to college." They're still having their big night at the Hyatt Regency on Wacker, and tickets are still typically priced at $95 each. But she does see students cutting back. Rather than each couple springing for a limo, five to six kids now share the ride. Students who aren't dating anyone special are saving the cost of a ticket by going to the dance solo, or in a group of friends.

And a dress is an easy way to skimp with style. Even Nordstrom sells prom dresses starting at $58. But savvy students are taking advantage of the recycled-dress movement, through organizations such as Cinderella's Closet and the Glass Slipper Project. "I think a lot of the young girls will be taking advantage of the Glass Slipper Project," says Neal. (The next "prom boutique date" for Glass Slipper is April 18 at Vernon Johns School, 6936 S. Hermitage.)

In Steger, three sisters who graduated from Bloom Trail High School organized their own "boutique" with donated dresses and menswear. There are other ways, too. Jones College Prep, 606 S. State, points students to the Barbara Bates Foundation. It was created by the Chicago-based designer, who was a teen mother but graduated from Marshall High School in 1972. She provides custom prom dresses to underprivileged or hard-to-fit young women, as well as formalwear for deserving young men.

Audrey Butterfuss is seeing more prom traffic at her high-end consignment shop My Favorite Things, 12 W. 63rd St. in Westmont. Most of the prom dresses there are no older than three years old, and go for $69-$110. "Yesterday we sold an absolute princess dress that would normally be $500," says Butterfuss. "It had layers and layers of bouffant lace. We sold it for $150." Other promgoers are having luck on craigslist.org and eBay.com, and one student newspaper recommended that girls "sample" makeup at cosmetics stores. "Have them do your makeup and buy a $10 lip gloss in return," advised one student in the Lane Tech Warrior.

The recession will really hit proms next year, predicts Shep Moyle, president of Stumps Inc., which supplies prom paraphernalia like favors. Schools started holding their proms in more exotic locations in the early '90s, he says, like upscale hotels, botanical gardens, and the tops of skyscrapers. But next year, he estimates that 75 percent of schools will return to campus for prom. "Schools and the students know that this is a very special event in their high school career, but they also know that times are tough and finding a way to stretch their dollar is even more important now than ever," Moyle says.
A model walks the runway while showing off one of the dresses up for auction at a fashion show and silent auction at Paul Mitchell The School, 1225 S. Moore, 46, is now married to actor Ashton Kutcher, who, at 31, is just four months older than Willis’s new wife.

Confused? Madonna was also reported to be there.
Kutcher even went so far as post a cheeky picture of his wife on the Twitter social networking website during his visit, although probably not the kind of photo that Moore, or Willis, for that matter, had imagined would be uploaded on the internet.
Under the headline: “Shh don't tell wifey”, Kutcher, the host of the prank show Punk’d and many a teen comedy movie, uploaded a photo of a barely dressed Moore bending over.

Kutcher, who recently caused an uproar over his Tweets about his noisy neighbours, wrote: "Watching my wife steam my suit while wearing a bikini. They appear before the public with no lens, or graphics company to airbrush a little beauty in. It’s a runway model’s job to put the clothing (no matter how crazy) in the best possible light. That job means getting those potential buyers off their seats and to the store as soon as the show is over.

It doesn’t matter that hardly any one will be near the same size as the elegant model, because the allure is so strong. That’s modeling. Rates for Runway vary depending on the client, ($200 - $500 per day), and day of week. The modeling agency will give you the rate at the time you are given the booking.

Runway modeling also known as "Catwalk Modeling" is displaying fashion, and is generally performed by "fashion models." "Glamour modeling" usually includes Black Models, Web Models and Internet Models of the International level. While "Adult Nude modeling" describes any kind of modeling that is performed without clothes.

Runway Models requirements are few. For female models, the perfect height range is 5’9”-6’0”. Hips preferably 33 ½ - 35”. For men it’s even tighter: 6’0 – 6’2” and able to wear a 40R suit coat. The model selection must match origination and intent of market, yet bottom line is designer’s subjective opinion.

You are required to be at Runway bookings 45 minutes prior the show time. This time is for the Client to decide what shoes go with which outfits, etc. so it is also used for you to read your line up so you will know in which order you go on stage and if you are doing single, double, triple, or a group run. Take a good assortment of shoes and accessories for runway. Two pairs each of black-sheer, off-white or cream, and nude colored hose are a must for every show. It is always better to take too many than to take too few.

How to become a Plus Size Model

Plus size modeling is the best modeling industry that is gaining more popularity and acceptance throughout the world. Because plus size models and modeling has gained popularity in the last ten years, the opportunities have broadened considerable, but all modeling shoots for a plus size model are not the same.

Plus size models will discover major differences between shoots, whether operating as a free agent or with representation and between different markets. A successful plus-size model embraces her unique figure and natural beauty. She consistently eats well, stays active in body and mind, and resists the downward spiral into crash dieting and yo-yo exercising.

Just as not everyone can be a regular model, not everyone can be a plus-size model. The modeling industry has very specific physical requirements that you must meet in order to be successful. Some you can change and others you can't. Even if you are beautiful and everyone in the world has told you that you should be a model does not automatically equate success. You can be the most gorgeous woman, but if you are under 5'8" or over 6'1" you are going to have a difficult time succeeding as a fashion model.

Size requirements also vary from city to city. Generally, most working plus-size models are a size 10 through a size 20. Plus-size models are expected to be in fairly good physical condition and somewhat toned so that modeling bathing suits and swimsuit model is a possibility. If you don't feel you are right for fashion modeling, Aaron Marcus provides wonderful info for aspiring commercial models.

While the top plus-size models make great money, most of us have to work a "regular" job in order to continue modeling. In fact, getting into modeling and maintaining your career can be expensive. Comp cards and test shoots will get your career going (and keep you working) but they are pricey! Be prepared to spend between $800 and $1500 just to launch your career.

If you want to be a plus size glamour model, you do need to consider that there are different kinds of plus size modeling and different markets for different sizes.

Fashion business is purely depends on glamour?

What does a professional female or a male model know that you don't?
