Despite some trepidation on author Patrick Rothfuss’ part, Lionsgate has optioned the rights to do a Kingkiller Chronicle series, following the expiration of the option that Fox previously held. The film company, judging by the author’s blog entry, seems serious about pulling it off and working with him to do something…different.

From Pat’s announcement, it’s clear that Rothfuss has something unconventional in mind. Some sort of hybrid story playing to the strength of cinema and television. The question is what the joint venture will come up with. A big-budget TV series or miniseries? A movie with an associated series? A serialized movie told in multiple parts, like The Hobbit and Harry Potter popularized?

When I met with Lionsgate, I said, “If you come at me with a movie offer, it’s going to be a hard sell. I’m not that excited about movies by themselves. But you guys are different from a lot of other studios. Those guys are huge. Monolithic. But you’re more agile and innovative. Your movie people and your TV people actually know each other. They could work together. Share resources.

I continued: “If you came at me with a pitch that involved a television show AND a movie, I’d listen to that. I’d listen really hard, because something like that would let us be big-budget while still giving my story room to breathe. It would give people the ability to spend more time in my world. I can’t think of anyone who has really done that, but it seems like we could have the best of both worlds that way. And it seems to me that you guys are one of the only places that could realistically pull something like that off.”

With the gap between books, I had forgotten just how epic Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive is. The perfect blend of world-building, drama, character development, and cinematic action sequences. It’s more than that, though. Words of Radiance, like its predecessor, is basically three full-length novels in one. And on top of that, it is also a collection of short stories and art pieces, which intersperse the story between chapters. This is all crammed into one volume that exceeds the 1,000 page barrier, and is technically the longest book Tor can bind with their current process and equipment.

For those of you who have already read the first installment: Things Happen. Plot twists abound, political intrigue is out in full force, and the story moves forward at a brisk pace. (Honestly, that seems a little strange for this genre…) Then the signature Sanderson Avalanche makes you curse the wait for the next book. (On the plus side, it should be a much shorter delay this time, since there’s no Wheel of Time left to distract Brandon from his own series.)

Words of Radiance advances the stories of Kaladin, Dalinar and Shallan by a far greater amount than I would ever have expected. Just…read it yourself and see. There’s not really much room to talk about it without bringing spoilers into it. Let’s just say the book deserves every one of its thousand-plus pages.

Patrick Rothfuss’s Kingkiller Chronicle (including all three books, from The Name of the Wind to the upcoming The Doors of Stone) has been optioned by New Regency Productions and Fox Television.

Who will play the twelfth incarnation of The Doctor? The BBC will be announcing it Sunday, August 4th in a show called Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor. It will air on BBC One at 7pm and on BBC America at 2pm Eastern.

The much belated Artemis Fowl movie seems to be happening again, as LeakyNews reports. There are names attached to it this time, which bodes well. Could it finally be pulling out of Development Hell after all these years? The movie is being produced by Harvey Weinstein, with Michael Goldenburg directing and Robert DeNiro and Jane Rosenthal as executive producers.

The CW’s superhero show factory is cranking out another program. A show centered around The Flash is currently being fast-tracked, with the Barry Allen character slated to be introduced during the second season of Arrow. The two shows are supposed to have a bit of overlap, so we may be seeing more of CW’s strange nightclub-filled parallel universe rather than the world of the earlier seasons of Smallville.

This just in from Terry Pratchett’s Twitter profile, a new Discworld novel by the name of Raising Steam is currently in the works.

There is some speculation as to whether this is the long-expected third book in the Moist von Lipwig character arc, which Pratchett had previously announced as being called Raising Taxes or if it features a completely new character, as other sources have reported.

The Wertzone author Adam Whitehead notes:

Pratchett had previously said that he was having difficulty making the tax-based book interesting. This is understandable, given that Making Money—Moist takes over the Ankh-Morpork Mint—was fairly close to being a retread of Going Postal—Moist takes over the Ankh-Morpork Postal Service—as it was. I would guess (and to stress this is guesswork) that Pratchett has taken Moist out of the tax office and put him in charge of the Undertaking, Ankh-Morpork’s under-construction subway system.

The end is finally here. Some of you have been waiting more than twenty years for this book, and others less. Either way, the fourteenth and final installment in The Wheel of Time has finally been released to the world.

The much-anticipated Last Battle certainly lives up to expectations, spanning the majority of the book, with nonstop action all the way up to the dramatic conclusion. Armies clash, plot lines are finished, and characters live or die. We finally get to see the main characters at top of their game.

Some questions are still left unanswered of course, though the things that didn’t make the final cut may yet be revealed in the upcoming encyclopedia that Harriet is supposed to be editing.

It’s hard to believe it’s all over. The Wheel of Time has been one of my absolute favorite series since I first picked up The Eye of the World in 2007, shortly after Robert Jordan’s passing. Thank you, Brandon Sanderson, for supplying an ending to one of the greatest fantasy epics of all time. Some may like it, others may not. But it is an ending. And a beginning.

Disney intends to release Star Wars: Episode 7 sometime in 2015, kicking off a new trilogy with a long term plan “to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years” beyond the initial trilogy. According to The Verge, Disney has purchased an “extensive and detailed” treatment for the trilogy, so they’re well on their way to making it happen. (The question is: when will it be set? Speculators predict either the earlier days of the Old Republic, like in the Bioware MMORPG, or during the New Republic of the Expanded Universe novels.)
