The Asus Eee PC 1001PX netbook is one of the most popular netbooks around at the moment and fantastic value at around £200 to £230. This elegant little netbook is well designed, easy to use and has many of the features expected of higher priced netbooks.

We’ve long admired the budget Asus netbooks as they generally offer great value for money, giving you a usable netbook coupled with long battery life but in a compact and lightweight package.

Let’s have a look at the main features before we get into the video clip and price comparison.

The Toshiba NB550D is one of the first netbooks to use the dual-core AMD C-50 CPU and ATI Radeon HD 6250 graphics

Toshiba has an enviable reputation for releasing solid, well built netbooks with good battery life, keyboards and screens. Previous models including the NB205 and NB305 were lauded as dream machines for mobile workers. But what of the new range?

As per usual, all 3 of these netbooks have 10.1 inch displays, 1Gb RAM, a 250Gb hard drive, 1024 x 600 resolution and Windows 7 Starter Edition installed. It goes without saying that upgrading to 2Gb RAM will provide better performance no matter which of the 3 you pick.

Each netbook also has the same dimensions and is the same weight, around 1.32Kg, so it looks at first glance that differences in this comparison are going to be hard to come by.

But there are some interested points to be made in terms of processors, graphics cards, bluetooth and speakers.

The NB500 is one of a new range of netbooks from Toshiba

Renowned for build quality, Toshiba’s netbooks have been a favourite of mobile workers for several years. A new range has come to market and the one we’re focusing on today is the Toshiba NB500-10F. Let’s see if it is up to task.

First of all, the specification of the NB500 bears a striking similarity to many other netbooks currently available. This is the basic netbook of the new range whilst the NB520 has all the toys including a dual-core processor and Harmon Kardon speakers.

You can pick up the Toshiba NB500 netbook at major retailers such as Amazon and PC World for around £230 to £250, which puts it in the same price bracket as the Acer Aspire One D255 and Asus Eee PC 1005PX. See the current NB500 deals.

What this means is that with the NB500 you get the usual Intel Atom N455 processor, 1Gb and a 250Gb hard drive. The screen is 10.1 inches with a resolution of 1024 x 600, there are 3 USB ports, a 4 in 1 card reader and Draft N wireless.

Battery life is expected to be around the 8 hours mark but we have yet to see any reviews of the Toshiba NB500 and so can’t back that figure up yet with any real use figures.

There is no bluetooth on this budget netbook but expect traditional Toshiba build quality, a decent screen and a great keyboard as is the norm on previous models including the NB250, NB300 and NB305.

With the NB500 you also get a huge amount of software bundled with the Toshiba including useful utilities but also trialware such as McAfee® Internet Security and WildTangent Games you’ll probably want to uninstall.

Once we receive some reviews of the Toshiba NB500 we will add the netbook to our netbook rankings.

The Samsung NF210 netbook ranges in price from £280 to £350

The Samsung NF210 netbook is one of a new series released towards the end of 2010. It features a new rounded and curvy design, a dual-core processor and decent battery life. Let’s have a look at some features and the best prices currently available.

Samsung NF210 Features

• Better Performance – the NF210 uses the dual-core Intel Atom N550 processor, which offers an improved performance over the old single-core Atom N450 processor.
• Nice Design – a curvy design sets the latest set of Samsung netbooks apart from other manufacturers.
• Long Battery Life – whilst the quoted amount of battery life is over 10 hours, the reality is that you’ll get around 8 hours of normal use out of the NF210, which is better than the average netbook.
• Good Screen – is not glossy and so does not cause distracting reflections when used outdoors.
• Bluetooth 3.0 – the latest specification means that Bluetooth version 3.0 is fitted as standard, 8 times faster than v2.0.

The Samsung NF110 netbook is one of a new series from Samsung that includes the NF210 and NF310 models

Samsung have been releasing netbooks aplenty over the last 6 months or so but here are another 3 models, starting the new NF series of netbooks. Let’s have a look at all 3 side by side from the NF110, NF210 and top of the range NF310.

First of all, there are no budget models here. Each model in the NF series is going to cost towards £300 or more with the NF110 the cheapest of the 3, currently around £280 at PC World.

The NF210 is around the same price as the NF110, between £280 and £330, which is surprising in a way as there is a key difference between the 2 models, which you will see below. The NF310 or top of the range model is not currently available in the UK although we have found an Amazon seller listing one at around £430, which is pretty expensive for a netbook and we would hope that the price does come down to a more manageable level.

The Samsung NF310 features a dual-core Atom N550 processor and HD display

The Samsung NF310 is an interesting netbook in several ways, it offers better performance than many current netbooks plus it has a higher resolution display. All packed into the same size with a 10.1 inch screen. How does the specification shape up?

The Intel Atom N550 dual-core processor is the reason for the better performance, which instantly puts the NF310 a cut above other netbooks such as the Samsung N150 Plus or Asus 1015PE.

But that’s not all, the 10.1 inch LED display has a resolution of 1366 x 768, much better than most other netbooks that have a smaller resolution of 1024 x 600. The quality screen in NF310 is non glossy and so does not reflect sunlight when being used outdoors.

The svelte design is something to behold, with a curved lid and great keyboard with isolated keys. The touchpad has a slight lip around the edge so your finders will know if they stray outside of the touchpad area.

The NF310 comes with other latest specification features such as Bluetooth version 3 plus EDR, which is starting to make its way onto many new models but there is an omission in that there are no sleep and charge USB ports so you can’t charge any of your gadgets whilst the NF310 is off.

At 1.24Kg the Samsung NF310 is fairly light, even for a netbook and you’ll get 6.5 hours (actual use, not manufacturers quote) out of the 6 cell battery, perhaps a bit lower than previous Samsung models but still a good amount.

The Samsung NF310 is not yet available in the UK but the NF210 is, which is very similar in specification although the display is the standard resolution of 1024 x 600. You can buy the NF310 in the US however.

More reviews of the Samsung NF310 are floating in now and so we will add the netbook to our netbook rankings shortly.

The Acer 533 netbook uses the newer Atom N455 processor - no performance inscrease but the ability to use faster DDR3 memory

Our first update to the Netbook Rankings of 2011 brings the total number of netbooks included to over 75 models. Let’s have a look at which netbooks are worth considering.

Individual reviews of netbooks by technology journalists and well respected publications still vary massively and so it is important to get the full picture of how good a netbook really is.

An example of this is the Acer Aspire One 533 netbook, released in the 2nd half of last year and added to our netbook rankings today. The average score for the 533 was 73.4% gained from 7 reviews, the highest of which was 84% from Notebookcheck and the lowest was just 50% awarded by PC Pro. That’s a difference of 34% and if you read the PC Pro review you would probably not consider the Acer 533 but reading the Notebookcheck review you might.

Our netbook rankings help to keep everything in perspective, one reviewer may not like a netbook but another reviewer might think it is great, over the course of 5 or 8 reviews you can determine which netbooks are consistently getting the best scores.

The Asus 1015PEM is brand new and features the dual-core Atom N550 processor

Asus continue to churn out netbooks at all price points from budget models to premium netbooks with the latest specification. We compare 3 current models from the cash conscious R101PX through to the mid-range 1005PX and up to the newly released 1015PEM, which is best?

The Asus approach when it comes to releasing netbooks is to send lots of models to market, each with very similar names and specifications. Netbooks tend to have practically identical components in any case and so you end up with netbook after netbook with an Atom N450 processor, 1Gb RAM, a 10.1 inch screen with 1024 x 600 resolution.

The release of the dual-core 1.5Ghz Atom N550 processor does liven things up a bit and that processor is finding its way into many of the latest netbooks to be released. The N550 processor does offer a performance improvement over the N450 and this will be confirmed as we see reviews coming in for the 1015PEM and other netbooks with that chip.
