In addition to the Original Motion Picture Score reviewed yesterday, Black Dynamite also has an additional musical score, Black Dynamite (Motion Picture Soundtrack), compiled by the film’s Music Supervisor, David Hollander. The soundtrack, which accompanies Younge’s compositions but is compiled on a separate album, is also worth listening to. An album of library music, or incidental music, that’s ready-made for radio, film and television production, each of the 23 tracks included was hand-picked by Hollander from an extensive collection of 1970s British library music created for past television series and films.

Since 2001, ThinkGeek has made a tradition of posting fake products on April Fool’s Day which are not actually available for purchase. However, some of their ideas have been so awesome that, upon popular request, they’ve become reality. One example is 2007’s 8-bit Tie. This past April 1st, there was an even more amazing (at least for Star Wars geeks) faux product “announced” — the Tauntaun Sleeping Bag — and it, too, is now a reality.

Black Dynamite is being hailed as a modern-day Blaxploitation film and, based on a number of the film’s characteristics, it could feasibly fit the bill. There are, however, some significant differences between Black Dynamite and the Blaxploitation films of the 1970s and 1980s, including vastly different motivation, historical context and even, in some cases, reception. Among the similarities that exist between Black Dynamite and traditional Blaxploitation films like Shaft (1971), Super Fly (1972) and Coffy (1973) is the way the film was made, the type of storyline it employs, and, of course, its musical score and soundtrack.

When I was little, I would trot off to elementary school with my plastic lunchbox — Shirt Tales, MoonDreamers, Super Mario Bros. 2, or ALF, depending on the year — filled with the typical sandwich, some kind of leftover, and maybe a cookie. Sometimes, my mom would surprise me with a note tucked inside wishing me a great day or telling me she loved me.

In no way do I want to trivialize my mom’s sweet displays of affection — quite the opposite — but there’s a trend among Japanese mothers (and some fathers — one featured in the book) which goes far beyond that. Charaben are bento boxes inspired by, as the name suggests, characters from popular culture. I’ve featured charaben bento boxes here on Fandomestic before, so if you’ve been following along you know how amazing they can be, but perhaps, like me, you didn’t realize they constituted their own subset of the bento box art form.
