THE NEWS:

Hours after we "go to press" with this week's newsletter, the Session will receive the report of the Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC). They will learn the candidate's name and hear about the elements of the individual's biography, experience, and character which have led to the PNC's nomination. As well, the Session will confirm plans for introducing the candidate to the congregation, staff, and community and establish the call for the congregational meeting to vote on this nomination. These plans have been shared:

Two open houses in the Elliott Room of the church for all to meet the candidate: Friday, October 22, 6:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 23, 10 a.m. - Noon.
The candidate will lead in worship and deliver the sermon on Sunday, October 24^th .
The congregational meeting will follow the worship celebration immediately. This is when the people will act on the PNC's nomination of the candidate to serve First Church as its next installed senior pastor.

On Sunday, October 17^th, full details will be offered to the congregation during worship. A packet of information is being sent to all households as soon as possible, to include the candidate's biography and other important communications. Please make every effort to become informed and take part in these great moments of new life at First Church.

11:00 a.m. Worship Service:

Our Interim Pastor, Rev. Stephen H. Phelps will deliver the Sermon "Money Matters"

Ten O'Clock Hour: Throughout October, we will continue to explore the parables of Jesus. Join us for an hour of fellowship, spiritual reflection, education, and thoughtful discussion. No outside reading is required. All are welcome.

The nursery will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with Christina and Patty.

Kids Worship: This week, Jane Woland will continue to work with the 3s. The 4s - 10s will begin a study of daily life in the ancient Near East, beginning with a sampling of foods. The inbetweeners (11s/12s) will continue their lively discussion about what the Ten Commandments means in a modern world.

Other News:

On Saturday, October 23 at 2:00 p.m., an all-First Church cast will offer a dramatic reading of the librettos for two new operas written by Terry Quinn, called The Mark of Cain and The Birthmark. Also, Larry Picard and Frank Longino will each sing an aria from the work. In the Elliott Room of the church. The public is invited.

2011 Stewardship Emphasis begins October 31^st.

October 31^st is also Rev. Phelps' last Sunday serving as Interim Senior Pastor for First Church. His letter of farewell was sent out to the congregation last week. It is added at the end of this Newsletter Issue for those who may have missed it. A farewell luncheon is scheduled to follow the worship celebration on the 31^st. He and all the church will be glad if you can attend.

HYMNAL DRIVE: Thanks for the Hymnals! Your response was outstanding: we've more than doubled our original request! The African American Heritage Hymnal Drive is officially closed. More opportunity to place hymnals and Bibles coming in the near future.

Budget Saturday: All Session Members and Committee Chairs are strongly encouraged to attend the annual Budget Saturday meeting on Saturday, November 13, 2010 from 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. in the Elliott Room as we meet to create the preliminary church budget for 2011. Cuba Dinner: November 14 another one of our fabulous after-church feasts of Cuban inspired food, to benefit the Senior Meals program of La Fernanda, our sister church in Cuba. Put it on your calendar now. Eat in or take out.

Notice regarding Sunday Parking in the Henry Street Bike Lane

Effective October 10, 2010, parking on Henry Street will be available only between 10:30 AM and 1:00 PM. Church participants who must come early, such as choir members, will find that both sides of Clark Street are opened for legal Sunday morning parking. The 84^th Precinct has been under considerable pressure from some community members to open the bike lane at all times. We need to support them as they introduce this compromise to the Heights. Officers will be on hand on October 10 prior to 10:30 AM to guide drivers to the Clark Street spaces.

THIS FRIDAY October 8, 2010: marks the second concert of the fall season of MUSIC AT FIRST, the acclaimed new music series at First Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn Heights, and will feature exciting sets by bassist Eleonore Oppenheim and vocalist/sound artist Lesley Flanigan. Lesley will perform original music on instruments that she has designed and built herself, and Eleonore will perform a set of electro-acoustic pieces that will include works commissioned by and written specifically for her.

Please come out and enjoy. Music Starts at 7:30, and the show should be over around 9:30 with a short break between sets. Admission is $10. For more info go to www.musicatfirstsite.com

We grieve with Rev. Nancy Talbot upon the death of her father Phillips Talbot. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 15th at 6:00 p.m. in Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church located at 921 Madison (by 73rd Street). A reception will follow the Service. Please keep the Talbot family in your prayers.

PNC Update: Unanimous decision reached!

With great joy and excitement, the committee is pleased to announce a unanimous decision in identifying a candidate for Senior Pastor.

Since October 2009 the committee has proceeded to move in an expeditious and thoughtful manner with the duty we've been charged with. Our efforts were greatly aided by the prior PNC and the patience and understanding of the congregation.

Over the next few weeks we will be communicating process and timing leading up to the congregational vote. At this point, only limited information can be shared due to procedural events that must occur first. Once this has taken place the committee will reveal the name of the candidate, as well as the decision process. Our intent is to be as transparent as possible so that the congregation can make an informed decision.

As our work continues, we look forward to keeping you updated and will make ourselves available should you have any questions.

A Note from Elder Larry Picard: This Saturday I will be running in the Hamptons Marathon with Team in Training. This Sunday, I'll be recovering in my hotel room. Thanks to my First Church Family, I was able to exceed my goal of $3,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Thank you so much!

Worship Service, 11 a.m. our Associate Pastor, Rev. Beth Waltemath will preach her last sermon at First Church: "If You Remember One Thing, Remember This."

Special Congregational Meeting in the Sanctuary immediately following the worship celebration. The main business of the meeting will be to act on Rev. Beth's request to dissolve the pastoral relationship with the First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn. An election of nominees to fill vacancies on the Session will also take place.

Farewell Reception in the Elliott Room, immediately following the Congregational Meeting. An Appreciation Journal is in the Narthex (Henry St. foyer) to receive your notes of thanks, memories, and photographs of Rev. Beth. Hymnal Drive Update: Thank you very much to those early contributors to our First Hymnal Drive Ever! We've received funds to purchase 24 new African American Heritage Hymnals! Our goal is 50. Imagine how much easier life will be between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Sunday when you reach for a hymnal and it's right in front of you in whatever pew you choose. Place $20 in the envelope provided and let us know who you are and whom you want to honor and we'll do the rest.

It is much easier to stay calm during an emergency if you have a plan. Decide where your household will reunite after a disaster. Identify two places to meet: one right outside your home, and another outside your neighborhood, such as a library, community center, or place of worship - why not at First Church. Visit your meeting place with your family and discuss the alternative routes to reach it in case an emergency shuts down a piece of your neighborhood. About our Associate Pastor Rev. Beth Waltemath

With a mixture of sadness and gladness, we announce that our associate pastor Rev. Beth Waltemath will soon leave her labors in the fellowship of her beloved First Church. Beth and her husband David have been called as a clergy couple to serve the North Decatur Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Georgia, beginning October 1, 2010.

The Session has called a Special Congregational Meeting for Sunday, September 26, 2010, immediately following the worship celebration. The main business of the meeting will be to act on Rev. Beth's request to dissolve the pastoral relationship with the First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn. A Luncheon will follow in the Elliott Room honoring Rev. Beth's time at FPC Brooklyn.

NEW SEASON FOR CONCERT SERIES AT FIRST CHURCH

Please come out and celebrate the opening of the second season of MUSIC AT FIRST exciting new music concert series at First Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn Heights. We have an amazing line-up this season, the first concert of which features the DITHER electric guitar quartet and composer KYLE BOBBY DUNN with his ensemble. From the upstairs organ loft in the darkened space, Dither will be performing music by composers Ted Hearne, Josh Lopes, Lisa Coons, and Wil Smith, and their beautiful, engulfing, and often gloriously loud sound will provide an awesome complement to the music of Kyle Bobby Dunn, whose ambient and sweeping textures, produced by strings, horns, guitar, piano, and electronic laptop processing, sound like they were written specifically for the cavernous sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church.

Music Starts at 7:30 p.m., and the show should be over around 9:30 p.m. with a short break between sets. Admission is $10.

Ten O'Clock Hour: On Sunday, September 12 at 10:00, the Ten O'Clock Hour resumes in the Thurman Room with a study of two of Jesus' parables: "new cloth on an old garment/new wine in old skins" (Matthew 9:16-17, Mark 2:19-22, Luke 5:36-39) and "young leaves of the fig tree" (Matthew 24:32-36, Mark 13:28-32, Luke 21:29-33). Throughout September and October, we will continue to explore the parables of Jesus. Join us for an hour of fellowship, spiritual reflection, education, and thoughtful discussion. No outside reading is required. All are welcome.

The nursery will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with Christina and Patty.

A Note from Elder Larry Picard. In May, I signed up for Team In Training, a fundraising arm of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. As a team, we are training to run a marathon (yes, a marathon) and individually we are committed to raising thousands of dollars for LLS. Dr. Sam Murumba will deliver a sermon entitled: “About Time”

Sam is an Elder at FPC and a Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School which he joined in 1992 after having taught law in Australia for many years. He is a member of the American Law Institute and an adviser on the Institute’s Project on Intellectual Property. Professor Murumba is actively involved in the mission of several human rights organizations. In 2009 the Human Rights Watch board of directors honored him for his years of service to the organization, including as a board member. He also serves on the advisory boards of its Women’s Rights and Africa Divisions.

The nursery will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with Christina and Patty.

We grieve with Linton Stables and Greg Brown in the death of Linton's mom, Nancy L. Stables, passed away in VA, on Wednesday August 25, 2010 after a brief illness. She is survived by her four children, all of whom were with her in her final days and hours. Please keep Linton and Greg in your prayers.

A graduate of Union Theological Seminary and a board member of Presbyterian Welcome, Paul has received awards for preaching and promise in pastoral ministry.

Kids Worship: Join our teacher Laura Koenig and kids ages 4 and up for faith, fun and talking vegetables. After the passing of the peace, the children meet in the gym for a special Veggie Tales series about trusting God and discovering their inner gifts.

her medically fragile daughter Margaret Grace as she transitions home. She

a fundraising arm of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. As a team, we are
training to run a marathon (yes, a marathon) and individually we are

participating in the Hamptons Marathon. Right now, I am raising $3,000 for
the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I'm happy to report that my fundraising has

Our thanks and admiration to Jill Huguet and Lauren Mancia for their weeks of preparation, dedication and creativity with the Shakespeare Camp youth. How clearly we saw energy, intelligence, imagination, and love in bloom. Thank you!

White Rose Ministry: Thanks to all First Churchers for your warm welcome to Dania, the wife of Rev. Jose Padin -- pastor of our sister church La Fernanda. Her visit helped us form closer ties with our sisters and brothers there. We learned more about some of their activities -- not only the meal program for 12 seniors which we support through our Cuba dinners here at FPC, but more. They do weekly Bible study -- with 20-25 participants; and we'll be joining them in this -- by email across the miles. They have economic development projects which include both church and neighborhood: they raise vegetables and medicinal herbs, as well as chickens and rabbits to enhance food budgets. We heard about their "Saturday school" program (no space for Sunday School) and active youth group and choir. We also heard about their dream of raising their roof -- building a new sanctuary to provide badly needed new worship space on the second floor of their church; turning the first floor into meeting space and an apartment for a new pastor.
We hope to continue to build this connection, to know them better and better, and to share with them through prayer, Bible study, and accompanying them in their journey.

Summer Music Series: Hymn Sing on the front steps of the church at 7 p.m. Please join us for an evening of great music and fellowship to kick off our Summer series this year.

FPC and White Rose Ministry welcome Dania Padìn Cardenas to Brooklyn this weekend, July 16-18. Dania is the wife of Rev. Padin, Pastor of La Fernanda Reformed Presbyterian Church, and heads up the Children’s Ministry as well as the Childrens' Choir at La Fernanda. She is in the United States to participate in a Presbyterian Womens' Conference in San Antonio, Texas, through her role as Chairwoman of the Cuban Federation of Presbyterian Women. All FPCers are invited to meet Dania during her brief stay with us. She will be attending the Garden Party on Friday evening, will attend a dinner in her honor on Saturday at the lovely home of Diane and Richard Greene in Park Slope, and will participate in worship service on Sunday. Our Worship Celebration BEGINS at 10:00 a.m. this Sunday and will continue at that hour throughout July and August.

This Sunday, Rev. Phelps has invited friend and colleague Pastor Samir Selmanovic to deliver the sermon "God Our Stranger." Pastor Selmanovic is a pastor, activist, and author (www.samirselmanovic.com). After 12 years of pastoring in New York City and Los Angeles, he began to implement a vision here for FaithHouse, a "living room" in which people of all faiths--including "none of the above"--can gather to learn from one another. His book, It's Really All About God: Reflections of a Muslim Atheist Jewish Christian, was published by Jossey-Bass last year.

Rev. Phelps and Pastor Selmanovic will jointly celebrate the service of Holy Communion with the congregation. (Rev. Waltemath is on vacation this Sunday.)

We celebrate the arrival of Stella Faye Olson, who entered into this world on May 30, 2010! She is blessing her parents Diana Kim and Steig Olson and her big sister, Zoe.

On June 30, the Presbytery of New York City took two major actions. Elder Tony de la Rosa of Los Angeles, a seminary classmate of Rev. Phelps, was elected to serve as Interim Executive Presbyter for up to three years. Tony brings many gifts to this work. On page 12 of this PDF: http://nycpresbytery.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/2010-06.pdf you can read much more about him.

The second action the Presbytery took was to downsize staff in the offices at 475 Riverside Drive. The process the Personnel Committee engaged in, followed by the one that went past midnight on June 30, was exhausting, sad, painful, and necessary. To cope with vastly reduced income from churches, required annual savings exceeded cuts of 25%, more than $200,000. All staff positions except Mr. de la Rosa's are restructured, and although it is hoped that current employees will apply for the new positions, there are many fewer positions. You who have worked with Presbytery staff may wish to send words of thanks before the last day of employment under the old staffing plan, which is July 31.

The 219^th General Assembly convenes this Saturday for eight full days. The term (also "G.A.") refers to the bi-annual legislative assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Every one of the 170 presbyteries covering all the lands of the fifty states will be represented by equal numbers of lay and clergy commissioners as they gather in Minneapolis over the next week. Some major questions will be addressed. Along with several other presbyteries, NYC Presbytery is bringing a bill (called an "overture") to rescind the policy that has restricted the rights of gay and lesbian church members to seek ordination. Especially in the Northeast, churches and presbyteries have met this policy with firm disapproval for many years. Perhaps it will at last be lifted. Follow proceedings at http://ga219.pcusa.org.

The New Press, publisher of Michelle Alexander's The New Jim Crow, has asked Rev. Phelps to adapt his sermon of May 9, called Every Mother's Son, for a Father's Day audience. The New Press has placed the adapted sermon with Alternet (www.alternet.org) where, we are told, it be online beginning Friday, June 18.

Summer Worship Hours: The Summer Hour for the Worship Celebration moves to 10:00 a.m. on July 4. The usual hour will resume in September.

Kids Worship this summer: will start on June 27 and run through August 22. Join our teacher Laura Koenig and kids ages 4 and up for faith, fun and talking vegetables. We meet after the passing of the peace in the gym for a special Veggie Tales series about trusting God and discovering our inner gifts. No Kids Worship on July 4, August 29 & September 5. Our regular Sunday School Year begins on September 12.

Mid-Week Boost: As a follow-up to last month's screening of Pray the Devil Back to Hell, we will discuss how we might apply what the women did in Liberia to the challenges we face in this country. (Don't worry, we'll give a brief summary of the film if you haven't seen it.)

We will also introduce a discussion of Katherine Bushnell's book, God's Word to Women, published in 1923. Her book has a fascinating history: she was a pioneer to free women in ministry. A Greek and Hebrew scholar, she explains some of the confusing Biblical verses regarding women, such as 1 Corinthians 14:34-37. PNC Committee Report: We continue to make positive strides toward identifying a nominee for Senior Pastor.

Since April 2010 we have been able to accomplish the following:

· Members of the committee met with Rev. Phelps in an effort to bring more transparency and context to our search process

· We have asked Rev. Phelps to communicate in a letter on frequently asked questions that arise in the search process

· In an effort to engage increased participation the committee has established a question/suggestion box to elicit feedback from the congregation; the box will be located in the Narthex

· We have received and reviewed over 100 applications from a very diverse group of outstanding candidates representing gender, ethnic, and geographic diversity

· The committee continues to listen to moving sermons and identify distinguished candidates to interview

· We have nearly completed first round telephone and in-person interviews with a very select group

· The committee held an introductory meeting with the Presbytery Committee on Ministry in late-May

Next steps:

· We will hear prospective candidates preach in-person in June

In the weeks ahead the committee will continue to review applications and conduct outreach efforts. We believe this approach will identify the right nominee for our congregation. We look forward to keeping you updated will make ourselves available should you have any questions.

An introduction to the New Testament is underway at the Ten O'Clock Hour. You may have learned the order of these books of the Bible in Sunday School —Matthew, Mark, Luke and so forth—but the story behind their composition offers a very different kind of order and meaning. Who wrote? What were their sources? Whom did they write for? The classes are presented so that each session stands by itself, so you may come to one, or come to all. This introduction to the New Testament r will consider remaining books of the New Testament in this manner:

Once again First Church, along with other area churches, is co-sponsoring e-waste recycling at First Unitarian Church on Pierrepont Street on Saturday, June 5th from 10 am until 4 pm, and Sunday, June 6th from 12 noon until 2 pm. Residential-only items that will be accepted include air conditioners, computers, batteries, cables and wiring, CD players, cell phones DVD players, remote controls, printers, telephones, VCRs, and fax machines. In short, most items that are electronic and from your home. It is a great opportunity to preserve our beautiful environment. For more information, see the flyer on the fence.

Join Midweek Boost for a screening of the documentary "Pray the Devil Back to Hell". This acclaimed film won Best Documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival as well as many other film festival accolades. Recently the film was screened at the UN Headquarters in Geneva and was mentioned by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her speech at the 58th National Prayer Breakfast.
Pray the Devil Back to Hell chronicles the remarkable story of the courageous Liberian women who came together to end a bloody civil war and bring peace to their shattered country.
Thousands of women — ordinary mothers, grandmothers, aunts and daughters, both Christian and Muslim — came together to pray for peace and then staged a silent protest outside of the Presidential Palace. Armed only with white T-shirts and the courage of their convictions, they demanded a resolution to the country's civil war. Their actions were a critical element in bringing about a agreement during the stalled peace talks.
A story of sacrifice, unity and transcendence, Pray the Devil Back to Hell honors the strength and perseverance of the women of Liberia. This Sunday, First Church will joyfully celebrate the baptism of Camille Elizabeth Jefferson, daughter of Robert and Monique Jefferson.

Rev. Stephen H. Phelps will deliver the sermon "Cell the Church" ---an encouragement to the congregation to learn about and find out how their gifts and talents might be helpful to the committees of the church---all in the spirit of worship and Christian stewardship.

Rev. Phelps is leading an introduction to the New Testament at the Ten O'Clock Hour. You may have learned the order of these books of the Bible in Sunday School —Matthew, Mark, Luke and so forth—but the story behind their composition offers a very different kind of order and meaning. Who wrote? What were their sources? Whom did they write for? As with his survey of the Old Testament, Rev. Phelps will aim to make each session stand by itself, so you may come to one, or come to all. Rev. In a secure and caring environment, the group offers hope, faith, inspiration, coping skills and spiritual support to individuals seeking community while embracing the challenges that accompany job loss.
