My favourite part of the exhibition itself, and the thing I am most proud of, is the focus of Style Africa. We could have taken an exclusive look at the contemporary fashions of West Africa, but instead chose not only to emphasise the importance of current trends, but to also look deeper into the history and evolution of the production and consumption of West African textiles. I feel this gives visitors a well-rounded view of the subject, which coupled with the use of mannequins, floor-to-ceiling textiles, and a video featuring young people from the Drum Arts Centre, portrays West African style in an exciting and vibrant way.

Exhibition at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery 31st March 2012 - 2nd September 2012. Style Africa explores the rich textile heritage of West Africa. In this collaborative exhibition, curators from the museum have joined forces with young people to create new ways to present the significant West African textile collection from BMAG, the University of Birmingham and Craftspace. This free exhibition uses the changing traditions of woven, embroidered, printed and dyed clothing and textiles, and focuses on textiles produced from the early 20th century up to 2011.

Some 45,000 people, including Foppa, were disappeared, mostly in and around Guatemala City. Consider that the national population is only 8 million, and you start to get a sense of the scale of this trauma.

The Cool Hunter - Makoto Tojiki - Light Sculptures

Japanese artist Makoto Tojikil is fascinated by light. He uses it in ways that create amazing illusions and out-of-this-world experiences in a subtle, inquisitive way.

But what we love most is the way his No Shadow pieces – large animal and human sculptures made of strands of light - evoke a sense of playfulness, awe, possibility and wonder. We find ourselves unable to stop staring, unwilling to leave the area of influence of the magical, somehow celestial beings and creatures.

Tojiki was born in 1975 in Miyzaki, Japan, and graduated from Kinki University in 1998 as an industrial design engineer. After a stint designing home appliances, he launched his artistic career full-time in 2003. Of the No Shadow pieces, he says “An object is seen when our eyes capture light that is reflected from the object. If we extract just the light that is reflected from ‘something,’ are we still in the presence of that ‘something?’ Using contours of light, I try to express this ‘something.’” We envision all sorts of opportunities for brands to use this type of sculpture at events, launches, stores, showrooms… - Tuija Seipell.

Unless you’re an astronomer, kayaker or farmer, you might have missed that it’s the spring equinox. The duration of day and night are roughly the same, the magic moment occurring worldwide on 0514 Universal Time, March 20, 2012 (That’s 9:14 p.m. March 19th, here on the Pacific coast). From here on out, the days will be longer and the nights shorter in the Northern Hemisphere -- at least until the Earth’s wobble peaks its annual cycle on the summer solstice, June 20. Seem early this year? It is. Due to the counterintuitive nature of the Earth’s orbital dynamics and wobble, this is really the earliest arrival of spring since 1896. Climate-change deniers and other wackadoodles take note: the early chronological spring it unrelated to global warming and the unseasonably warm winter, which is occurring because of atmospheric carbon pollution and other human activity.
