Play readings are a great means to a theatrical social time without the stress of rehearsals three times a week. They enable people to get together with others in a relaxed environment to read through an old favourite or enjoy the excitement of a new play.

A play reading is also ideal for someone wanting to give theatre a go but too shy to audition or for an old hand who would like to try reading new roles without the pressure of auditions on their shoulders.

FAMDA is holding its next play reading at 2:00pm on Sunday 12 September at the Rhythm Café in Bridge Street, Foster.

On the menu is a delightful modern family comedy called Losing Louis by Simon Mendes da Costa.

This play had its Australian première in 2008 when it was staged by Peridot Theatre under the direction of Gaye Gay, just recently the adjudicator for the South Gippsland One Play Festival in Foster.

Commenting on directing this intriguing play with some unusual casting requirements, Gaye says,
“My husband, Grant, and I first saw Losing Louis in London in 2005, loved it and were determined to bring this play back to Australia.
Love comes in many forms and Losing Louis is a cleverly written love story about three generations (one unseen) of the Ellis family.
We find ourselves laughing at their everyday humour, crying with them when we witness their pain and gasping at the outrageous audacity that makes them, and us, the fractured human beings we are.
I hope you enjoy your first experience of Losing Louis as much as I did, and never forget, despite the ups and downs that life brings us, love usually makes the world go around.”

FAMDA is hosting a play reading of Losing Louis at the Rhythm Café in Bridge Street, Foster at 2:00pm on Sunday 12 September.

You don’t have to be a FAMDA member to come to the play reading so everyone is warmly invited to this most enjoyable social and theatrical event. It is not a rehearsed reading, people are free to volunteer to read on the day.

There is a $6.00 cover charge for afternoon tea with drinks and coffee available at bar prices.

For catering purposes FAMDA would appreciate an idea of the number of people likely to attend.
Mitch Mahoney: To be confirmed

Six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who have barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn’t everything and that loosing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser.
That’s the story line for The Twenty-Fifth Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a musical comedy conceived by Rebecca Feldman with music and lyrics by William Finn, a book by Rachel Sheinkin.
The show centres around a fictional spelling bee set in a geographically ambiguous American Putnam Valley Middle School where six quirky adolescents compete in the Bee, run by three equally-quirky grown-ups.
The 2005 Broadway production, directed by James Lapine, earned good reviews and box-office success and was nominated for six Tony Awards, winning two, including Best Book.

.

There are nine cast members.
The casting can be somewhat flexible – when Melbourne Theatre Company staged the Australian premiere of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee directed by Simon Phillips, Magda Szubanski played William Barfée.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

Rona Lisa Peretti: The #1 Realtor in Putnam County, a former Putnam County Spelling Bee Champ and returning moderator. She is a sweet woman who loves children but can be very stern when it comes to dealing with Principal Panch, who has feelings for her that she most likely does not return.

Vice Principal Douglas Panch: After five years’ absence from the Bee, Panch returns as judge. There was an “incident” at the 20th Annual Bee, but he claims to be in “a better place” now, thanks to a high-fiber diet and Jungian analysis.

Mitch Mahoney: The Official Comfort Counsellor. An ex-convict, Mitch is performing his community service with the Bee, and hands out juice boxes to losing students.

Olive Ostrovsky: A young newcomer to competitive spelling. Her mother is in an ashram in India, and her father is working late, as usual, but he is trying to come at some time during the bee. She made friends with her dictionary at a very young age, helping her make it to the competition.

William Barfée: A Putnam County Spelling Bee finalist last year, he was eliminated because of an allergic reaction to peanuts. His famous “Magic Foot” method of spelling has boosted him to spelling glory, even though he only has one working nostril and a touchy personality.

Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre: Logainne is the youngest and most politically aware speller, often making comments about current political figures, with two overbearing gay men as parents. She is a bit of a neat freak and speaks with a lisp.

Marcy Park : She is the poster child for the Over-Achieving Asian, and attends a Catholic school called “Our Lady of Intermittent Sorrows.” She is also not allowed to cry.

Leaf Coneybear: Leaf comes from a large family of former hippies and makes his own clothes. He spells words correctly while in a trance.

Chip Tolentino: A boy scout and champion of the 24th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, he returns to defend his title, but he finds puberty hitting at an inopportune moment.

Many Choir members thought “wouldn’t it be loverly” just to get together again in the Foster Anglican Church hall and to enjoy an informal evening singing familiar songs.

With the blessing of the Reverend Tim, rector of the Anglican Church, the singers resumed singing at 7:30pm on Tuesday 1 June 2010 with fortnightly sessions thereafter.

With an exciting project in the pipeline for 2011, Christmas carols and Andrew Jamieson taking the singers through their paces, it was decided that weekly practices would resume on Tuesday nights from 31st August.

Of course new members are always welcome to join the Singers. A fee, of $3.00 per evening for each singer, covers the cost of purchasing music and hall hire etc.

To join in the “Let’s get together and SING” program, or for further details, contact:

Congratulations to Larry Hills and the Bass Coast Chorale on their performance of the Miners’ Requiem in Wonthaggi on 19 & 20 June 2010.

A MESSAGE FROM LARRY HILLS

I’ve written the Miners’ Requiem specifically for the Wonthaggi Centenary celebrations. It is being performed by the Bass Coast Chorale accompanied by a full orchestra. It is a beautiful and moving work. There are only two performances: Saturday, 19 June at 8pm and Sunday, 20 June at 2pm. The performance will be of great significance to the citizens of the Wonthaggi area, but also of significance to other parts of the world due to recent mining tragedies in the US and in China.

15 February 1937, the day 20-Shaft blew up, was the blackest day in the history of Wonthaggi. The whole town rallied, united in their anguish, to save thirteen miners trapped behind thousands of tons of fallen rock, engulfed in plumes of black smoke and deadly gasses. The valiant attempt to rescue the miners captured the attention of a whole nation.

As we celebrate our centenary, we remember those men who lost their lives that day and all miners over 100 years who also lost their lives in the State Coal Mine at Wonthaggi.
Requiem (Rest in Peace)

GREAT ENTERTAINMENT

A one act play festival gives the chance for a friendly theatrical competition.

You can see new plays, support your friends, meet new people and be thoroughly entertained.

It’s an exciting prospect for many companies from all over Victoria to come together with the opportunity for you to showcase their talents to an audience not normally available to them and it’s also a marvellous opportunity for local people to see some wonderful theatrical talent close to home and without spending a fortune.

Despite the competitive element, the festival is always a very friendly and social occasion with audience members and companies being given the choice of concert style seating or sitting at tables with their own drinks and nibbles.

It’s all on the menu as FAMDA hosts the tenth annual South Gippsland One Act Play Festival at the FosterWar Memorial Arts Centre on the weekend of Saturday & Sunday, 21 & 22 August.

An engaging and entertaining production of a cute, fun show.

Fortunately this was the first time I had seen the piece and could not, therefore, bring any preconceptions from previous viewings.

For those who haven’t seen ‘Spelling Bee’ it concerns a group of quirky adolescents who are the finalists in one of those, typically American, spelling competitions. Three adults oversee the competition and members of the audience are brought on stage to compete.

Before looking further into this specific production I feel it necessary to look at the genesis of the show. It started life as an improvisational play (C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E) created by a New-York based improvisational comedy troupe. The resulting piece was ‘work-shopped’ and then developed, through the use of a script doctor and a composer-lyricist, into a fully scripted musical.

As with all such developments it is difficult to pin-point who did what and when, and this can lead to a hotchpotch end product. Fortunately, in the main, Bee has retained what must have been the original endearing charm and punch.

I cannot say that I find the music very memorable (much recitative, little aria). It is very derivative, doesn’t progress the plot and much of it seems to be ‘tacked on’. The only number with real impact is ‘The I Love You Song’. Whilst the whole cast were vocally strong, in this size of a venue amplification should not be necessary. Often the volume was too high and, as a result, some of the voices became shrill.

Of course this isn’t the first time that a musical has been developed in this way – probably the most famous example is ‘Chorus Line’. As in Chorus Line this piece has little development, being rather a series of cameos linked together by the original premise. Again as in ‘Chorus Line’ each character has ‘baggage’ to carry and the audience whilst appreciating the humour and expertise of each character is also being involved in their individual problems. The trick is to make sure that these characters are real and not stereotypes.

Comedy springs from realism, believability. If it is not real it is superficial and therefore less effective gaining less sympathy. Here we have a very diverse group of characters; the danger is to play their superficial quirks and turn them into caricatures – grotesques – which can lead to overacting. The audience continues to laugh but is less involved.

As I say, not having seen the piece before, one must make assumptions about what to attribute to the original script/score and what to this production. What are inherent in the script and what is down to this production.

In his programme note the director, Emil Freund, indicates that he adopted an Ensemble approach; as this was how the piece was originally developed this would seem a very logical starting point. However one of the dangers of this approach is that the end product can become so diverse that there isn’t a ‘through line’ and a consistent style. (One of the reasons why the original improvisatory play needed a script-doctor and a composer). Sooner or later the Director must make final decision and, if necessary, weald a heavy hand. In an otherwise splendid production I thought that there were times when this heavy hand had been needed.

This applied to some performances and some of the staging. During solo numbers the focal point must remain on the soloist without subsidiary characters distracting, and upstaging, with ‘demonstration’ acting.

Fortunately both the direction and choreography were seamless (nothing worse than seeing where either starts and finishes). The energy from all concerned was palpable and infectious whilst avoiding being too slick.

The advantage, for this type of production, of being in an intimate venue in a smallish community is that one can play the ‘Parochial’ card both in topical references and in the selection of audience participants. This was particularly well handled by the more mature and experienced members of the cast. However this very parochial nature can tend to encourage approbation for the performer rather than for their performance.

Great to see, and hear, both Maxine Montgomery (Peretti) and Andrew Seeary (Panch) back on this stage. Matt Faravoni (Mitch) brought both a powerful voice and warmth to his characters. I thought that the three younger ladies, Maddie Wooster, Allie Sutherland and Vanessa Sheehan (also choreographer) were particularly effective. Gareth Prosser has probably the most bizarre of the characters, Coneybear, and only just managed to avoid turning him into a ‘Stand-up’ routine. On the other hand Gareth Grainger (Barfee) managed to restrain his exuberance and deliver a very touching character.

Nathaniel Taylor led a tight band and it was great to see so many young local enthusiasts in the talented Production team. Over the last few years BLOC Music Theatre have started to branch out with this sort of ‘Boutique’ production which not only gives their performers a wider variety of opportunities but also the same for their audiences – I hope that it continues.

I really enjoyed my night out at The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a honey of a show and a marvellous production.

FAMDA’s Arty-Farty Trivia Party was a trivia night with a difference.

Quiz master, Andrew Oldroyd, really kept the night moving. Naturally there were lots of trivia questions, some related to visual and performing arts, music, stage and screen, plus more general knowledge topics of the history, geography, sport variety.

What made this night special was a Trivia Party with a very social aspect to it, lots of other games and prizes to be won plus some FAMDA “stars”, John Laurie and Josh Gardiner providing musical entertainment.

Leongatha Lyric Theatre and Wonthaggi Theatrical Group were well represented on the occasion.

SILENT AUCTION

Several local artists generously donated works to be sold. There are drawings, paintings, photography, sculpture and woodwork by such noted South Gippsland artists as Marilyn Ardley, Ann Parry, Jason Pell (South Coast Joinery), Elizabeth Richardson, Anne Roussac–Hoyne and Kerry Spokes.

The winning table was made up of Barbara Partridge, Arie Bos, Fleur & Graeme Wheeler, Llew, Jane & Tom Vale, Bev and Don Nicoll.

Congratulations to all who helped make the night such a huge success.

Tania Pell has become the young face of FAMDA when she was elected president of Foster Amateur Music & Drama Association at the Annual General Meeting on Thursday 11 March 2010.

Joining her on the committee is Andrew Oldroyd as secretary plus new members, Nicole Cooper, Louise Harfield, Amanda Mahomed, Jane Park and Peter Rushen.

The committee is now enriched with some vibrant and enthusiastic young blood, keen to take on the challenges ahead for FAMDA.

Dianne Paragreen, Norm Willoughby and Jennifer Paragreen remain on the committee as Vice President, Treasurer and Publicity Officer respectively with Linda Giddy and Barbara Partridge, giving the committee a good blend of youth and experience.

Outgoing chairman, Max Hastings, thanked the retiring members of the committee for their past efforts and expressed the hope that that they will continue their involvement with FAMDA.

Committee 2010 – 2011

President: Tania Pell
Vice President: Dianne Paragreen
Secretary: Andrew Oldroyd
Treasurer: Norm Willoughby
Publicity Officer: Jennifer Paragreen

General: Nicole Cooper, Linda Giddy, Louise Harfield, Amanda Mahomed, Jane Park, Barbara Partridge, Peter Rushen.

ACTIVITIES REPORT 2009 – 2010

Delivered by Max Hastings

RESIGNATION OF PRESIDENT

I would like to begin this report by acknowledging Max Adam’s term as President of FAMDA.

Max has been a member of FAMDA since 2001, served as president from 2006 – 2009 and has otherwise served on the committee since 2002 During his term as president the group has achieved great progress in organisation and success in engaging new members. His leadership style has encouraged members of the community to be involved with FAMDA on many differing levels and has contributed significantly to the group’s success.

Max directed the One Act Play Altered Egos in 2001. This was his first directorial involvement. He appeared in Guys and Dolls in 2002 and directed his first Music Hall in 2003.

He assumed the presidency following my resignation in May 2006. He was elected President at AGM 2007 and continued until October 2009.

It was with regret that the committee also accepted the resignations of LeeAnne Mitchell, Andrew Oldroyd, Trish O’Neill, Tania Pell, Dianne Frey, Genevieve Moore and Raymond Dunstan during the year. Their work on behalf of FAMDA is greatly appreciated.

CAPITAL WORK AND EQUIPMENT

We added to our lighting grid with the purchase of lighting equipment at a cost of $5000. A dollar for dollar Shire grant softened the impact of this purchase.

We purchased 14 new wireless microphones for our production of Into the Woods.

This decision was taken because the cost of purchase was not appreciably different from the cost of hire. While the outlay was a significant one, an opportunity to recoup costs exists in hiring the equipment to other companies.

WEBSITE

Elizabeth Richardson has established an informative attractive and user friendly website with links to many other like sites.

SPONSORSHIPS

We continue to sponsor an arts scholarship at South Gippsland Secondary College and two Gippsland Associated Theatre awards.

We also seek a major sponsor for FAMDA as identified through our Five Year Plan discussions.

On the other hand we thank the local businesses who have supported FAMDA, by sponsoring advertising and in kind, during 2009.

AFFILIATIONS

We continue to support Gippsland Associated Theatre, the Victorian Drama League and the Music Theatre Guild of Victoria through our membership and participation in their activities.

PLANNING AND PROTOCOLS

Work continues on planning processes, protocols and job descriptions.

Linda Giddy has been leading us through workshop sessions to help us clarify our goals and to better understand the most effective and efficient ways of communicating with our community, through the preparation of a five year action plan. We will continue to address the issues raised through her workshops, [organisational / promotional / financial / planning / facilities], under her guidance.

Refinement continues of the Standards and Expectations document presented in March 2009, providing a reference point for FAMDA activities that will be especially useful to new members.

FAMDA 2009 PROGRAM

Bush Magic - An Edwin Coad pantomime complete with puppets

Dinner at Hugo’s - An Edwin Coad drama directed by Raymond Dunstan

One Act Play Festival – Very high standards and increased entries

Into the Woods - A Sondheim classic

The Prom Coast Singers performed at Promontory Dreaming as part of Seachange Festival and also at the Anzac Day ceremony and Community Carols with Paddy Broberg as director.

FAMDA 2010 PROGRAM

Family films
These were screened over four days in January this year to very modest audiences but remain a possible service to the community in future years.

Speaking in Tongues
Scheduled for May 2010, this play by Andrew Bovell had to be abandoned because unfortunately, it failed to attract a cast.

The South Gippsland One Act Play Festival
This will continue on 21 & 22 August 2010.

We are endeavouring to make this festival a feature of the Victorian one act play circuit and the support and standard of entries last year encourages us in that goal.

Sponsorship from the Toora and District Branch of the Bendigo Bank also makes it a very enticing competition.

Cabaretro

A sophisticated cabaret reminiscent of Paris in the 1890’s and Berlin in the 1920’s is planned for September/October 2010. It will make use of the vast array of talent available in South Gippsland and promises to provide a diversity of entertainment, inviting atmosphere and quality dining.

AWARDS

Congratulations to FAMDA’s award winners of 2009.

Music Theatre Guild of Victoria – Louise Dower as Milky White in Into the Woods.

Victorian Drama League and Gippsland Associated Theatre – Rob Ellis, John Laurie and Jules Schmidt for composing, playing and recording the “dinner music” for Dinner at Hugo’s.

Gippsland Associated Theatre – Fiona Watts (Lead Female), Josh Gardiner (Junior Male), Louise Dower (Junior Female) and Andrew Oldroyd (Lighting Design) all for Into the Woods.

It was also pleasing to see John Laurie earn a Music Theatre Guild commendation for his direction of Into the Woods.

THE FAMDA FAMILY

The FAMDA family continues to flourish.

Into the Woods saw 8 performers new to the FAMDA stage.

The production included a new director, new set designers, a new choreographer and at least 10 new production crew helpers.

Dinner at Hugo’s also introduced 2 new performers to the FAMDA stage.

Bush Magic saw a large number of people join FAMDA.

As Max Adam noted in last year’s annual report, ‘Our door is always wide open to anyone who may consider getting involved in performance or production.’ And so it remains. FAMDA welcomes anyone who wishes to become involved with any aspect of the group’s activities.

GRANT APPLICATIONS

During the year we applied for a Regional Arts Fund grant to run workshops. This application was unfortunately unsuccessful.

We also made a successful application to Bendigo Bank – One Act Play Festival Sponsorship for 2010.

GIPPSLAND ASSOCIATED THEATRE REPRESENTATION

Norm Willoughby has continued to represent FAMDA on the Gippsland Associated Theatre Committee. He is also the G.A.T. treasurer.

Jennifer Paragreen’s knowledge of theatre and literary skills are invaluable assets in her continuing representation of FAMDA on the G.A.T. judging panel.

Andrew Oldroyd will serve as FAMDA’s G.A.T. judge for 2010.

Our thanks to Norm, Jennifer and Andrew.

THANKS

Thanks once again to everyone involved in FAMDA’s activities during 2009.

Finally, I would like to conclude by thanking FAMDA members, especially the FAMDA committee, for their continuing involvement and support of community theatre in Foster.

Max Hastings
Acting Chair

Certificates of appreciation were awarded to Max Adam and Raymond Dunstan.

MAX ADAM

in recognition of his enthusiastic involvement with FAMDA 2001 – 2009

Max offered to direct Altered Egos for FAMDA’s inaugural One Act Play Festival. He joined the committee in 2002, ultimately serving as president from 2006 – 2009.

During this time he produced, directed and chaired two Music Halls for FAMDA and took on the challenge of directing the world première of Stringlines.

As a representative of FAMDA, Max has sung, danced, acted, directed, produced, been an MC, public speaker and a diplomat. Always willing to take on new challenges, he even developed puppeteering skills put to use in Bush Magic.

While president, Max saw FAMDA achieve great progress in organisation and success in engaging new members and contributed significantly to the group’s success.

RAYMOND DUNSTAN

in recognition of the great contribution he has made to FAMDA to date

FAMDA appreciates Raymond’s fine efforts as a director, actor, committee member and a friend.

He has given us some inspirational experiences especially as director / designer for Oedipus Rex, Ebenezer’s Dream and Dinner at Hugo’s and encouraged us to embark on the One Act Play circuit.

We have admired his acting skills in productions such as Shadowlands and A Month of Sundays and appreciated Raymond’s willingness to take on daunting tasks and his meticulous attention to detail as a director and as our secretary.

FAMDA thanks him for the vision which has encouraged us to expand our theatrical horizons.

ENTERTAINMENT

After the formalities of the Annual General Meeting, Martin and Jack Chatfield provided some excellent musical entertainment which was followed by a tasty supper.

Musical Director wanted

The Prom Coast Singers is a Foster based choir whose members basically want to sing plus also to improve their voices and enjoy exploring and performing good music.

With the pending retirement of our founding Musical Director, Paddy Broberg, there is great enthusiasm from members to keep the choir active, taking on new challenges and at the same time sharing the cheerful company of other music lovers.

PCS needs a Director with sound choral and general musical skills to continue to inspire a disparate group of people with a common love of singing and a willingness to work hard to achieve their best.

The Choir

The Prom Coast Singers, now 30 to 40 strong, attracts singers of many and varied backgrounds from all over South Gippsland and is wholly unauditioned. Rehearsal is generally on Tuesday nights at Foster for two to four months before a performance, in the Anglican Church Hall. Other separate rooms are used for section rehearsals and choir members are available to conduct these.

PCS owns its own Yamaha Clavinova piano to ensure a high standard instrument is available for concerts and also rehearsal. Costs of music, copyright and insurance are covered by a small levy collected at each rehearsal from all members.

Members willingly accept responsibility for routine functions such as finance, maintaining the Music Library, photocopying, hall setup, publicity, ticket sales and piano moving. Close relations are maintained with FAMDA (Foster Amateur Music and Drama Association) to which PCS is affiliated. A small committee has been set up to oversee the day to day running of the choir and assist the Musical Director.

Musical Director

The Musical Director has the responsibility to plan the choir’s musical activities including the selection of music as well as the conduct of rehearsals and to direct the final performances. Local musicians have been very willing to perform with the PCS and the Director is expected to work with them when appropriate. The position is not salaried although travel expenses can be met.

Prom Coast Singers’ History

In November 1997, FAMDA staged a highly successful production of the Broadway musical, Annie, with Neil Goodwin as director and Paddy Broberg as the musical director. The next year several of the Annie cast members found they really missed the fun and camaraderie of the rehearsal and performance process. Their frustration got the better of them and they besieged Paddy with requests to let them sing again and, one evening in April 1998, eight former members of the Annie cast and crew met at Foster Primary School for the first sing-along of what was to become the Prom Coast Singers.

Under the umbrella of FAMDA with the guidance of Paddy Broberg, the Singers’ initial performances were in conjunction with community carols in Foster and Toora and singing for the residents of Banksia Lodge and Rose Lodge, Wonthaggi. It was not until Sunday 15 October 2000 that the choir presented its first paid performance in the form of a benefit concert held at the FWMAC in aid of the South Gippsland Hospital and Toora Nursing Home Auxiliaries.

The Singers’ December 2001 project was an impressive performance of Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols in Christ Church Foster.

In July 2003 the choir combined with the South Gippsland Wind Orchestra to present mid-winter concerts at the Dakers Centre in Leongatha as well as the Foster Arts Centre with PCS performing exerpts from Carmina Burana. This dramatic work was revisited in October when the South Gippsland Singers combined with PCS for a concert in Mesley Hall Leongatha as part of the world-wide choral phenomenon, Voices for Hospices and it was on the program again for the very special 10th Anniversary Concert – 17 August 2008.

Essence of Folk was the title for the program presented by the Singers in 2004. The choir performed in Poowong and Glen Alvie and the next week, on 27 June, they shared the stage with the Bec Bone Singers back in Foster at the FWMAC.

Fauré’s Requiem and Borodin’s Polovtsienne Dances were on the bill when PCS sang in the Foster Anglican Church on 15 May 2005. The following weekend they sang those works in concerts with the South Gippsland Singers and the Korumburra Primary School Choir at Mesley Hall and the Inverloch Community Centre.

The 2005 Voices for Hospices concert had Prom Coast Singers combining with the South Gippsland Singers and the Warragul Chorale for a concert showcasing each choir and featuring music specially composed by Larry Hills for all three choirs.

In the 2007 SeaChange Festival, the Prom Coast Singers demonstrated the diversity of their repertoire in a concert billed as From Pop to Op(era) and performed Paddy Broberg’s original music in the exciting multi-media Fire Up! project. The Singers also performed at the Mossvale Park Music for the People concert.

2008 saw members taking part in FAMDA’s widely acclaimed production of The Producers with Pam Coad as Chorus Mistress and other members providing the offstage chorus.

2009 projects included the multi-arts spectacular, Promontory Dreaming, contributing to FAMDA’s production of Into the Woods and in community carols at Christmas.

In between times there have been many happy nights of rehearsals with the challenge of learning to sing the right notes and the right words whether they be in English, African, French, German, Italian or Latin. PCS have sung at community carol services, funerals and in FAMDA musicals with performances in Foster, Glen Alvie, Inverloch, Korrumburra, Leongatha, Mossvale Park, Poowong, Toora, Warragul and Wonthaggi.

Expressions of Interest Wanted

To continue this rich music making history the Prom Coast Singers are now seeking a Director with sound choral and general musical skills to continue to inspire us by planning our musical activities, including the selection of music, as well as conducting rehearsals and directing the ultimate performances.

The position is not salaried although travel expenses can be met.

The Choir also wishes to hear from people willing to work as rehearsal pianists.

Anyone interested in working as either the choral director or rehearsal pianist for the Prom Coast Singers is invited to contact Andrew Jamieson 5683 2683 or acjammo {@] ozemail.com.au

Directed by Max Hastings to be staged 14 – 22 May 2010

Speaking in Tongues is an intriguing drama by the Australian playwright, Andrew Bovell, whose most recent play, When the Rain Stops Falling, was one of the hits of the 2009 Melbourne International Festival of the Arts, when staged by Brink Productions in association with the Melbourne Theatre Company.

In both Speaking in Tongues and When the Rain Stops Falling characters reappear, others disappear. Stories told in one part take on significance in another part.

The plays are driven by a sense of mystery. The answers are there but they are elusive.

The plot doesn’t always move forward – it leaps sideways and backwards, often travelling back to moments already seen but revealing them from a different angle.

Speaking in Tongues was written by Andrew Bovell and first staged in 1998.

Bovell later adapted his own storyline as the screenplay for the 2001 psychological thriller, Lantana, which starred Anthony LaPaglia and Kerry Armstrong with Rachel Blake, Geoffrey Rush, Leah Purcell and Barbara Hershey.

In Speaking in Tongues two married couples switch partners for the night. Who will have the courage for betrayal? Who will walk away?

A man weeps in the street after realising that his only love, long vanished, is alive and well – and has completely forgotten him.

A woman disappears on a lonely road, late at night, leaving ominous last words on her absent husband’s answering machine; at the same time, a man covered in blood comes home and throws a woman’s shoe into an adjacent empty lot.

There are nine characters in the storyline of Speaking in Tongues, but Bovell’s play dictates that they are played by four actors – two males and two females.

FAMDA is taking on the challenge of presenting this fascinating theatrical piece by staging Speaking in Tongues i14 – 22 May 2010 under the direction of Max Hastings.

The Gippsland Associated Theatre awards were announced in a glittering spectacle hosted by FAMDA at the Foster War Memorial Arts Centre on Saturday 12 December 2009.

Well over 200 theatre lovers flocked to the event, most of them really getting into the spirit of the evening by wearing colourful masks as the theme was masquerade.

Warragul Theatre Company’s version of the musical based on characters from Dr. Seuss’ stories, Seussical, was declared to be the most outstanding musical staged by a Gippsland company in 2009.

In the comedy and drama section Latrobe Theatre Company’s Who Goes Bare? was victorious.

FAMDA’s production of the Stephen Sondheim musical, ‘Into the Woods’, earned four major awards.

The most outstanding lighting award was won by Andrew Oldroyd.
It was the fourth consecutive occasion on which Andrew has won this trophy and no mean feat as, on this occasion, not only had he designed the lighting plot, he also had a major on stage role as the Baker.
In accepting the award on Andrew’s behalf, the show’s director, John Laurie, paid tribute to Jan Bull who actually operated the lights for the production.

Fiona Watts won the award for the most outstanding lead actress in a musical for her performance as the Baker’s Wife so her Gippsland Theatre award will be heading to Western Australia.

Louise Dower, followed up her success at the Victorian Music Theatre Guild awards by winning the most outstanding junior female award as Milky White, Jack’s cow in Into the Woods.
In her acceptance speech Louise acknowledged the remarkable work of Amanda and Chris Mahomed in creating the cow’s costume.

The most outstanding junior male award was won by Josh Gardiner for his performance as Jack.
Josh has had an extremely busy year theatrically as he earned a Music Theatre Guild nomination as a junior male performer for playing Michael Spofford inThe Witches of Eastwick with Leongatha Lyric Theatre and was also in the Victorian State Schools’ production of Barnum in Melbourne.

David Tattersall’s special Judge’s Award went to Rob Ellis, John Laurie and Jules Schmidt for their creativity in composing, playing and recording the “dinner music” for FAMDA’s play, Dinner at Hugo’s, which was staged in May.

Louise also received congratulations from Leongatha Lyric friends with whom she performed in ‘A Little Hotel on the Side’ and Wonthaggi friends who worked with her last year in ‘Les Misérables’.

It turned out to be an exciting night for South Gippsland theatre companies with four “Bruce Bricks” going to Leongatha Lyric Theatre for its production of ‘The Witches of Eastwick’.

Three of these were awarded to Colin Mitchell in the categories of Settings, Wardrobe and Design.

It’s time to face the music and find out what the Gippsland Associated Theatre judges thought of each company’s productions and star performers in 2009.

The theme is masquerade and it’s a celebration of all the good things that have happened on the Gippsland theatre scene during the past year.

Come along and support your local theatre group as well as having a great night of theatre as Gippsland’s drama companies strut their stuff.

The Music Theatre Guild of Victoria runs the Guild Awards for Excellence, an annual awards programme on behalf of the music theatre community.
Inaugurated in 1987, they reward excellence in a number of categories, and are designed to acknowledge the talent and expertise in the diverse productions of Guild member companies. They are not intended as a competition – to receive a nomination is an achievement in itself.
The nominees and award winners are selected by a panel of seven judges. Each judge also presents an individual award, usually for an achievement that has captured his/her notice but has not been nominated for a major award.
The annual Awards Night is held in December. As well as the presentation of the Awards, it features excerpts from selected shows in a celebration of Victorian non-professional musical theatre.

FAMDA’s ‘Into the Woods‘ has been nominated by the Music Theatre Guild judges for a Technical Achievement award.

FAMDA will also receive a special judge’s award to be announced at the presentation night.

John Laurie has earned a MTGV commendation for his direction of ‘Into the Woods‘.

MTGV awards presentation night Saturday 5 December 2009 at Frankston Arts Centre.
Hosted by PLOS. Directors Brad Fischer and Nathan Firman. Musical director: Bev Woodford.

CALLING PROM COAST SINGERS – Past, Present & Future
Having just emerged from the Woods, Paddy Broberg sends the following invitation:
We have decided to go ahead with a plan contemplated some months ago, but that for a while looked like an impossibility.
As time is short, and Christmas fast approaching, we will need to work hard, but the suggestion is that we give a performance at the Foster Carols by Candlelight service on Sunday evening 20 December. We will perform a few pieces from Handel’s ‘Messiah’, including the ‘Hallelujah Chorus’, plus some solo work.

Paddy has prepared a CD for each part (similar format to those for Prom Dreaming), a copy of which would be available for anyone requesting it.

Rehearsals will be principally on Tuesday evenings. Our first rehearsal is 7:30pm on Tuesday 3rd November at the Anglican Church Hall, Station Road, Foster.

The Prom Coast Singers subsequently performed at the Community Carols in Foster on Sunday 20 December 2009.
