Arrest in Veno Leigertwood's Murder

There was has been an arrest this week in the Veno Leigertwood murder. Veno was murdered outside his home in the early morning hours of September 13, 2008.

Dateline did a story on the murder and interviewed Veno's wife, Raven. I thought she acted suspicious, though I said I needed to see more. You can read my original thoughts here.

Police are now saying that Raven, who was once a person of interest, is no longer so. She has been cleared.

It will be interesting to watch this case go to trial.

Obama and Arizona Gov. Brewer: Photo of the Day

This is a photo you have likely seen in the news. The day after President Obama's State of Union Address, he flew to Arizona and was greeted by Governor Jan Brewer. While I am not going to get into politics and will not tolerate a political debate here, I think this photo has some fascinating body language.

This photo clearly depicts a heated and emotional situation on the part of Governor Brewer.

Look at the close proximity of the two. Brewer is upright, stiff and lifting her finger -- either making a point or telling Obama off. When we look at Obama, we can see that he is actually leaning away. This is indicative that Brewer is the aggressor at this moment.

Brewer also appears she is talking quite aggressively at the President.

In contrast, Obama shows no stress in his forehead, on his face, or in his body.

There is a pulling back of Obama's lip on his left side, which could come from speech, could be a sign of disagreement ("I don't know about that") or it could be a mild form of contempt. We can't discern this from the photograph.

Obama has a slight squint, which could come from the sun in his face, or it could be a mild smile or smirk.

If you also look closely, Obama has lifted his right arm and hand, and could be possibly trying to soothe Brewer with an arm or hand touch.

If Brewer wanted to rattle Obama, I don't think she succeeded.

Ryan Widmer: 911 Call Analysis

First published February 2011 Ryan Widmer, 30, stood trial three times for the murder of his wife, Sarah, 24. On August 11, 2008, his wife was found unresponsive in their bathtub in Ohio. The first time Ryan was convicted, but that conviction was overturned. The second time, the jury was hung and now the third time, Widmer was convicted this month again, and he was sentenced to 15 years to life.

I have been asked to take a look at the 911 call.

Read moreWhen you listen to the 911 call, its interesting. Ryan says, "My wife, ah, fell asleep in the bathtub and I think she's dead."

How would he know that she fell asleep? Notice he doesn't speculate when he says it? I find that interesting. Second, he thinks she is dead? He didn't check--he doesn't know for sure? Last, notice his lack of interest to get an ambulance immediately to try to save her? That's a huge red flag.

A few seconds later, Ryan says, "Yeah, she fell asleep in the bathtub, I think. I was downstairs and I just came up here and found her and she was laying face down in the bathtub."

Notice the afterthought of the words, "I think"?

When people fall asleep in the tub, do they end up face down? That sounds weird to me. Furthermore, I would think if you fall asleep and breath in water, it would make you wake up and cough, as your body struggles to get oxygen. It would be an automatic response.

They way Ryan says, "24", is notable to me. There is no signs of fear, sadness, or distress in voice.

The dispatcher says, "She in the water right now?" Ryan says, "Yes, the water's draining right now...I tried to do it...everything."

The dispatcher continues, "Have you taken her out of the water now?" and Ryan says, "Yeah, the water's completely drained and she's just laying here unconscious."

The dispatcher asks again, "She's still in the bathtub?" Ryan says, "Yeah".

WHAT? He didn't take her out of the tub the instant he found her? That's what a loving husband would do unless she was so large that he couldn't lift her, but I would expect him to say that, and beg for help if that was the case, but he doesn't do that either.

Also, the second time he says she is "unconscious". I thought he thought she was dead. Why would he jump to the conclusion she is dead immediately?? Most people hold out hope they can revive a loved one and don't give up so quickly, but Ryan seems to have given up when he called 911. That's very notable.

Ryan is intently listening. You can just feel it.

The dispatcher asks, "Have you tried CPR?" Ryan says, "As much as I could...what little bit I know." How do you do CPR on a victim who is in a bathtub, supposedly face down? You either know CPR or you don't...

The dispatcher says, "There is no way you can get her out of the tub." Ryan says, "I'll try, but I have to put the phone down." Why wouldn't he have done this earlier?

"I'll try?"...Caring husband, isn't he?

Notice Ryan was able to get his wife out of the tub without much effort. Why didn't he do this instinctively?

The dispatcher tells Ryan to give Sarah CPR, and Ryan doesn't ask for directions. You would think if he wants to save her life, he'd ask, "How do I do it?! I need help." Afterall, he already admitted to not knowing much about CPR. He doesn't. There is also no urgency when it comes to Ryan's actions at all. That is flat out inconsistent, if you ask me.

Listen to how Ryan says in the calmest of calm voices, "Okay, they are unlocked now" and then "we're upstairs". People who are truly distraught don't shift emotions so quickly.

Listen to the breaths Ryan makes into the phone. It doesn't sound like it is going into his wife's chest, does it? If you've done CPR, even if only on a dummy, it doesn't sounds like this! Hello!

The dispatcher doesn't pick up on the fact Ryan was doing CPR just there with those breaths and says, "Ryan I need you to put down the phone for me and do CPR, okay?" Ryan responds, "Yes, I am."

Doing CPR and holding the phone are not very compatible. Ryan thought he was doing CPR...maybe to the phone he was, but not to his wife.

We then hear Ryan in the background going "Come on, man...come on..." and then the call ends. He must think CPR is two breaths and that's it. He couldn't be more against saving his wife than he displayed in this call. Something is very wrong.

I think the jury got it right. There are way too many red flags in this 911 call for me!!

ABC Cruise Confidential

Did you see ABC's 20/20 report this past weekend about cruise ships? In light of the Costa Concordia that hit rocks in Italy, ABC decided to look a little closer at cruising, and what they revealed is eye-opening.

Passengers who discovered their loved ones went over board on a cruise reported that the ship continues full steam ahead regardless of their missing family member. Sound horrifying?

Former employees dish on what its really like to work on a ship, and its not what you'd expect. Plus, a former ship officer tells the lies she was told to tell passengers!

While I am not surprised by the lies employees were told to say to passengers, I think many people will be.

ABC 20/20 Debra Roberts reported that "...passengers were kept deliberately in the dark about anything negative."

Former ship officer, Shari Cecil said to Debra Roberts, “We don’t tell them anything. If there is a mechanical breakdown, ah, we do not tell them. If there is an illness outbreak, we do not tell them. We are told to lie to them.”

I believe Cecil.

Newt and Marianne Gingrich

Marianne Gingrich has come out and said that Newt wanted her to be accepting of his affair with Callista, his now third wife, when they were married. Several of you have asked me if I believe Marianne. I do.

Marianne's emotions and responses when she tells this story are aligned. This is a highly emotional subject for both Marianne and Newt.

Please do not make this about politics. This is a discussion about truth and deception, and understanding human behavior.

Better Business Bureau

As many of you know I've had a bad customer experience, and I'm reaching out to organizations for help. Many of you have suggested that I contact the Better Business Bureau. I have done so in the past, and found that they were out to help the businesses -- not the customers, so when I saw this on ABC's 20/20 last year, I wasn't surprised. It fit with my experiences.

Have you seen this report?

Needless to say, I still will contact every organization that is out there that offers to help customers who have experienced bad business practices, but I do realize things are not always what they seem.

The Better Business Bureau seems to be related to Yelp, doesn't it? Look at this article: Lawsuits Target Yelp for Unfair Business Practices Hmmm....

There is nothing more frustrating than seeing a company mislead people, and that is exactly what I have seen Yelp do.

I had a bad experience with a company who did work for me this month, and hence I went to Yelp and gave this company a 1 star review. I did it professionally by sticking to the facts. I even uploaded 4 photos and gave a link to show people photos of my complaint so they could see for themselves what issues I had with the company.

I expected Yelp to be fair about things. I was the first customer to write anything about the company I complained about. Hence, on the side of the Yelp page where I complained about the business, I was listed as the first reviewer.

Once the business I complained about saw my complaint on Yelp, all of the sudden there were numerous people coming out of the woodwork writing about this company and giving them 5 stars. It didn't take a rocket scientist to guess that the owner called all his colleagues and they all vouched for him. Prior to my complaint, no one had anything to say about this company -- suddenly I write, and everyone comes out ot the woodwork.

Within a week, all the comments were filtered. It still showed that there were 19 comments (yes, they all came after my review) and showed the average score of our reviews. I was a bit annoyed, but if we are all filtered, so be it. But what I saw next outraged me. I find it to be deceptive and misleading.

Yesterday, a new reviewer came (without question sent by the company owner again) and suddenly the company profile no longer showed me as the first reviewer!!! The person who commented yesterday became the first reviewer!

How can Yelp do this? I was the first reviewer and to say differently is flat out deceptive.

Furthermore, if you look at the reviews today, it shows only 2 reviews with a perfect 5 star rating!!! This is a lie.

I can't believe what I am seeing. See an edited screenshot below to see for yourself from yesterday.

If you are new to Yelp, and don't know how it works, you have no idea that there is a little gray link way down at the bottom of the page that says "XX filtered". This is filtered reviews and apparently they don't count for anything. That is where my legitimate and honest complain is at. This is outrageous!

My complaint is now 2 pages out, and you can only find it if you know to look for filtered comments, click on it, fill in a CAPTCHA and go then to the second page link at the very bottom and scroll down!! Otherwise it looks like this business is rated perfectly.

This should not be allowed.

I also uploaded photos of the shoddy work as Yelp allows you to do -- and guess what? They were all deleted today. Yelp is sure doing something to help this business look good, aren't they?

Boycott Yelp. This is unacceptable.

Michael Peterson Gets New Trial

Michael Peterson was convicted in his wife Kathleen's death in 2003. She was found at the bottom of a staircase. Peterson, who was home at the time, said it was an accidental fall, but the coroner concluded that Kathleen was murdered.

Peterson had been married before and divorced, but his children stood steadfast by him during the trial. Dateline NBC covered the story in 2006 as Peterson prepared for trial and you could see his children fervently believed in him. You got to see him up close and personal.

I, however, did not believe Peterson's story.

Ironically, Peterson is also connected to another death. A close friend of his, Elizabeth Ratliff,
was also found at the bottom of a staircase deceased as well. What are the odds? At first her death was investigated as an accident, but after Kathleen's death, her case was looked at again, and now it too is believed to be a homicide as well. Guess who the last person was with Elizabeth? Michael Peterson. A neighbor in 2003 recalled seeing him leave the night Elizabeth died (read more).

According to Yahoo News, Peterson is getting a new trial in the Kathleen Peterson case because a witness mislead the jury about the strength of the bloodstain evidence. You can read more here. This will be interesting to watch develop.

Michael Peterson is currently out of jail on bond. Can you believe it? I wouldn't go near a staircase if you see him!

Kiesha Abrahams (Weippert) Case Update

Do you remember little Kiesha Abrahams?

I wrote about her in August of 2010 when her parents came out publicly to plea for their missing daughter's return. I knew something was off immediately. You can read my original thoughts back then here.

Sadly, in December, Kiesha's stepfather, Robert Smith, plead guilty to manslaughter and being an accessory after the fact. Kiesha was killed on July 13--two weeks before they reported her missing.

I'm trying to find more on the mother as well. I know she was arrested, but I don't know the status of her case.

According to The Daily Telegraph, "It is believed Smith's charges were downgraded as part of ongoing negotiations in the case, which has involved seven Local Court appearances."

I'm happy to hear this couple is being held accountable for what they have done to poor little Kiesha.

Joran van der Sloot: Sentenced to 28 Years

Joran van der Sloot was sentenced to 28 years in prison for killing Stephany Flores after the prosecutors asked for 30 years. That's the good news. The bad news is Joran could get out in half the time if he behaves. He was also ordered to pay restitution to the Flores family in the amount of $75,000.

At least there is some justice for the Flores family. Now we can hope the Holloway family will be able to bring him to the U.S. to face further charges on the disappearance of Natalee Holloway.

Good news for a Friday!

Joran van der Sloot: Pleads Guilty

As an extremely arrogant and smug young man, its quite shocking to hear that Joran actually managed to admit to something he did--he confessed to killing 21-year-old Peruvian woman, Stephany Flores. But we all know psychopaths don't do things without reason.

ABC news reports, "Under Peruvian law, a prison sentence for a 'sincere confession' to a murder is normally much shorter than one for an outright guilty plea. He could spend less than a decade behind bars."

Let's hope that the judges in this case take a hard stance on Joran. It's about time he pays his dues!!!!

Now everyone finally sees Joran for who he is...

Julian Wendrow

Did you see ABC's 20/20 on Friday night? It was a fascinating story about a family, The Wendrows, whose daughter, Aislinn, had a severe case of autism and how they found what is known as "facilitated communication".

Facilitated communication is when a trained facilitator holds the hand of an autistic person and supposedly "helps" them communicate via a keyboard. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that facilitated communication is sham.

However, Aislinn, supposedly typed through the aid of a new facilitator how her father was molesting her causing things to spiral out of control for the Wendrow family.

Aislinn and her brother were immediately taken away from their parents, and Aislinn's father, Julian, was arrested and locked up in solitary confinement for 80 days and faced 75 years in prison, if convicted.

The story is riveting, but most of all: sad. Julian Wendrow went through hell and back on something that had no scientific basis. While the case was eventually dropped, Julian showed true and sincere emotions, and I absolutely believe he is innocent without question. I believe Julian is honest.

Casey Anthony Comes Out on YouTube

Casey Anthony created a video diary and it is floating our the internet...no one knows if it was intentionally posted or a leak. When you listen to Casey, it sounds like she has been making an audio diary prior to this and now she is doing a video diary. One can only wonder if she is doing this under some contract to make money. She's a total bore to listen to, if you ask me.

When I watch Casey speak, I see very emotionally void person, and an incredibly selfish and self-centered person.

I see a woman whose world revolves around her and her "things". I honestly think she is admiring herself on camera--enjoying being the center of her universe, again. She doesn't seem to have any attachments to people from what she says. It's all about Casey, what Casey gets, who cares for her needs at the moment and nothing else! It's chilling.

This video tape shows the depth of her character clearly, and its incredibly shallow.

Most people having endured what Casey did would be emotionally distraught and stressed. They'd crave connections, understanding, and compassion, but Casey can find joys in meaningless things--talking about her new computer, and what she owns. She is a sad human being, if you ask me.

Psychopaths do feel emotions -- but only for themselves, and we can clearly see that here.

I suspect we will see a TV show or something that sells these diaries to the public. I hope no one buys them.

4th HP TouchSmart Hard Drive Failure

Hello...I was hoping to get back to the blog tomorrow, but bad luck has just struck. My computer hard drive has failed for the 3rd time -- my 4th failure on two exact HP models that my family owns in three years. This is insane. I complained to HP when my parents hard drive failed -- get this --just a couple of weeks ago and they agreed to do the repair out of warranty and told me they would do no other. My parents will get their computer back fixed, and now I am hung again. This is flat out unacceptable. I wrote the HP corporate manager...I wonder what she'll say...it doesn't look good. I'll likely be computer shopping next week... That's bad luck, wouldn't you say? Stay tuned.

Study: Kindness Gene

A reader here at Eyes for Lies pointed me to an interesting study that identified a kindness gene. While that may not be surprising, it is surprising that people can spot people who have it successfully within 20 seconds of watching a silent video of two people interacting.

“Our findings suggest even slight genetic variation may have tangible impact on people's behavior, and that these behavioral differences are quickly noticed by others,” said Aleksandr Kogan, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto and the study’s lead author.

I am a firm believer that we communicate information through many channels, and behavior is one of the most revealing.

I am also a firm believer in what is called "personality identification at zero acquaintance". Just looking at a face, I can identify many traits about a person with high accuracy. The woman in the photo shows full lips, which is an indication of compassion, however, all the elements of the face must be considered before you come to a conclusion.

Food for thought.

Gary Giordano: My Thoughts

When I watch Gary Giordano speak, I have to say I am left with a lot of answers that aren't logical or that make sense.

Gary wants us to believe he went with her girlfriend to Aruba and when she supposedly went missing at sea; oh well, he went to catch his regularly scheduled flight. Nothing odd about that. Yeah, right. It doesn't take Eyes for Lies to see that.

Furthermore, Gary wants us to believe he drove across the island to a beautiful beach, Baby Beach, yet he goes snorkeling farther down off a jagged, rocky shore. "Baby Beach" got its name because the shores are perfect for children and families. It was an ideal place to go snorkel. Click on the link above and see how beautiful Baby Beach is, and then look (on Dateline) where he claimed he swam. No one would chose to swim off the rocks where he claims. I suspect it is unlikely they went in the water here, or if they did, it was with sinister intent.

When Gary says he never heard there were a lot of accounts that they were drinking heavily, he says, "I know there were videos of us at the RumRunner, okay, we didn't order drinks, we didn't drink heavily, she was walking, I was walking--we were a sober couple."

Gary is saying that because they didn't order drinks, and they were upright, they were sober? Does that convince you? Also, his story about juice (as seen on Dateline)... I'm not buying it. Either he had an alcoholic drink, or that drink was more sinister. He is hiding something here, too.

Gary goes on to say that people are saying he took Robyn to a remote location. To that he responds, "We were 100 yards from a scuba diving store with tanks in the back...we were in view of other people at Baby beach."

Yet later in the video, he says about that same scuba shop, "There is nobody there. There is not one person in the parking lot. Those are storm doors [in the video]....The scuba diving shop is closed. There isn't a single car in the parking lot. So I am screaming in the air?"

Oops. Gary is talking out of both sides of his mouth, isn't he? He seems to change the story whenever it suits him...honest people don't do this. Clearly, Baby Beach was remote that day.

When Gary is asked what he said to the airline clerk about Robyn, his flight companion, he denies he said that Robyn is taking another flight, but he doesn't remember what he said. That's a red flag. He says, "I didn't want to get into a long conversation about what is going on." He knows exactly what he said, but he doesn't want to admit to it, if you ask me. I trust the airline clerk. Considering the airport was shutting down, I'm sure she remembers him trying to catch a last minute flight minus his companion.

Gary couldn't be more removed from Robyn if he tried.

It's interesting when Gary recollects what the lead detective telling him that he is being arrested for the murder of Robyn Gardner, we don't see any response from Giordano like, "Did they find her? Is she gone?" He has no emotional response or memory that you would expect. Most people would not forget that moment if they are innocent -- being told you are being arrested for murder. You would immediately wonder if they found her --specifically if you didn't do it!!

Gary also says he swam with his shoes on. Give me a break!

When Gary talks about the flight insurance he got, he tells us he had to cover Robyn. He says he didn't have any other options. Yet strangely, while he makes the same claims to Dateline on Friday night, when Josh Mankiewicz says, "Couldn't you have taken out insurance on yourself without taking out insurance on Robyn Gardner, Gary responds while grinning, "I'm sure I could have done 15 different things."

Gary tells us he took out insurance for his boys, so why didn't he make them the beneficiaries on Robyn's policy? This is another inconsistency.

I am troubled by Gary's word choice when he talks about the insurance money, "When I give a thought about that, it's dirty."

Dirty? Really? If I am totally innocent and my girlfriend died at sea, would I think insurance money is dirty???? I might not want to collect on it because it emotionally kills me realizing my girlfriend died, but I would never think to call it dirty. Is it "dirty" to Gary because of what he knows happened?

I think so...

Ginger White and Herman Cain

Ginger White, an Atlanta business woman who is currently unemployed, spoke out to Fox TV in Atlanta this week confessing she had a 13-year adulterous relationship with the GOP candidate Herman Cain. Cain, however, denies this is true.

White is an interesting read because her face is literally frozen in this interview. I can't help but wonder if she spent her money on Botox instead of paying her rent. It makes this interview more difficult to interpret to say the very least.

White did, however, show reporters her phone records, which detailed numerous texts and calls between her and Cain on his private number. To double-check her claims, reporters texted Cain, and he called right back. He then denied any sexual affair and just said he was helping White out financially. Most people who you help out financially don't call back the instant you text them! More so, Cain admitted in an interview (seen below) he has known White about that amount of time (talking about the 13 years).

White also showed reporters two books Cain signed and once of them read, "Friends are forever! Everything else is a bonus.”

White describes Cain as arrogant, self-centered and in love with himself.

I do not see any signs that White is being deceptive in these interviews, but this is not a high stake scenario for White.

Kim Kardashian Punches Kris

I saw this clip and found it interesting that Kim Kardashian doesn't show any signs of anger in her face whatsoever when she punches her soon-to-be ex-husband. She acts like she was told to punch Kris as hard as she could, and she did just that. Her emotions are not supportive of her actions at all. What do you see?

Did you see Dateline on Friday night? Tom Foley and his wife lived on a farm in Coldwater, Michigan. In February 2009, they were going to attend a birthday party. Tom decided to leave early with his son and his son's friend, and his wife, Darlene Weber-Foley was going to meet up with them later.

Foley told his son to go start the truck while he did a few last minute things and when the kids went out in the yard, they heard a loud bang. Many wonder if the boys heard the gunshot that killed Darlene. Tom told them it was a window he broke, though someone came forward later to say the window was broken a week before.

I did not believe Tom Foley when I watched him. His emotions on the stand were not genuine. He dropped a lot of red flags for me as well when he talked about things. Listen to the 911 call above. The dispatcher says, "She fell in the shower?" Tom says, "No." Then he corrects himself and says, "I don't know". Whoa!! Huge red flag. If Tom truly didn't know what happened, how could say "No" so surely?

Tom Foley was originally convicted, but got a new trial based on new evidence and was eventually set free. I do think the majority of the interview of Tom on Dateline was taken after his trial, so you must remember once he was set free, the stakes in the situation dropped dramatically. Remember that when looking for the truth!

Natalie Wood, Dennis Davern and Robert Wagner

Many people are speculating about what happened the night Natalee Wood drowned out at sea in 1981. She was 43 years old. She was on Robert Wagner's boat with Christopher Walkens, and the boat captain Dennis Davern. Davern came out last week publicly and said he believes there was foul play on the boat that night, though he remained silent all these years. He has co-authored a book on this as well.

The question is: Is Davern believable?

I have to say when I watch him speak, he is consistent and and he doesn't appear to be the type who would be motivated for money. He is emotionally flat in demeanor and comes off as average or above average in intelligence, an introvert and yet social awkward. The word Asperger comes to mind when I think of Dennis Davern, though I have no idea if he does or does not have the syndrome. The fact that he didn't speak out all of these years, however, does not contradict his personality, from what I see. So from what I have seen to date, I do not see any red flags.

On 48 Hours on Saturday, the lead investigator on the Wood case, Duane Rasure, spoke out and said that he has now become aware that Robert Wagner has changed his story, though he still believes Wagner. Rasure originally found broken glass on the boat, and Robert Wagner said it was because of rough seas earlier in the week. But in Wagner's memoir, he wrote, "At one point, I picked up a wine bottle, slammed it on the table and broke it into pieces. Natalie was below decks at that point."

Why on earth would Wagner lie about that if he was totally innocent? This is, without question, a red flag. I am also troubled by the fact it took so long for Wagner to call for help or conduct a search. If he thought Natalie was missing, and it was dark, late and Natalie was deathly afraid of the water, you think he would have launched a search immediately. If they had a fight, and he thought she fled, did he tell that to police?

We must remember, after 30 years, if a crime was committed the stakes have dramatically reduced and the pressure on all parties is much less than what it was 30 years ago. We cannot forget that, and so while I am suspicious, I would like to see more before I make any decisions...

Do you think Robert Wagner or Christopher Walkens will speak out and address direct allegations? A few of you have submitted older videos of Wagner talking briefly about the night Natalie died, but he doesn't say a lot from what I have seen. I'd like details.
