On Prepping

I was just reading this Reuters articleand thinking about what I have done.

On the face of it I might fit into the wack-job camp of people expecting the end of the world. After all my wife and I both have bail out bags that might scare the sheeple.

But my kit is not a scary static thing that sits waiting for the end of times. Its actually really useful day to day. I have tape, paracord, work gloves, water, maps and a bunch of other stuff that comes in really handy when something inconvenient happens. For my wife, I know that if she got stuck traveling somewhere she would have enough food/water to last two days. Combined with knowing how tough she is, I don’t worry.

That, for me, is where the real world meets the paranoia. I am ready for whatever life dishes out. Car problems, surprise snow storm, being the first person with first aid training and supplies when someone needs help, whatever. Its piece of mind knowing that I can easily handle anything.

Its worth noting that my bail out bag is essentially a copy of my Search and Rescue kit. I could probably do a mild to moderate SAR mission out of this pack.

Sugru Xbox Controller Mod

This mod was more about me looking for something to hack using sugru than actually trying to improve the xbox controller. Needless to say, I think I did improve the controller.

Here are the results:

Basically I used the sugru to make myself custom nubs that give my middle fingers a lot more traction. When I am several hours into pwning n00bs my hands get a little clammy. These nubs will give me something solid to hang onto. Maybe its because Microsoft figures the Xbox is mostly played my 12 yr olds, but I have always thought the controller was a little small. The sugru nubs help there as well as I pushed some under my ring fingers.

For those really confused about what sugru is… Sugru is like silicone playdough that dries into a soft-tough silicone. Also it adhears to just about anything (or so they claim). I am actually testing that claim because I did not clean the xbox controller before applying the sugru, so it had a light coating of hand oil.

I have recently made a decision. I am officially a 1911 guy. Before I was on the fence. I like my XD-9 mostly because the ammo is cheap and it will eat anything. Also it was my first real handgun. I kept telling myself that 1911s were nice but I will take the training classes with my XD because it will be cheaper and the gun is more reliable.

After much thought I have abandoned that logic. Here is why: First, I enjoy shooting 1911s. In my opinion no other gun can match a good 1911 trigger. Second, anywhere you can find 9mm you can find 45 and its not that much more expensive. Third, my every day carry is a sig p238 which is a 1911 style battery of arms. Fourth, I am a more confident shooter with a 1911. I know its all in my head but I just don’t feel as accurate with the XD. Fifth, 1911s give me warm fuzzys. Sixth, 1911 parts are available anywhere. 1911 parts (in my experience) are second most common to glock parts.

Now that leaves the outstanding issue of reliability. I have two 1911s. A Kimber and a Sig. I have read horror stories about Kimbers, but mine is rock solid. It eats anything. JHPs are not a problem. The only thing it ever choked on was incorrectly sized wadcutters cast from tire weights. Thats right pure lead, hand cast wadcutters. It has eaten everything I throw in it without complaint. So my 1911 experience has been great. I recently purchased the Sig with the intention of making it my go-to gun. I plan on using it for training ect.

Why Sig…{angry 1911 purist comment here}…? Well it had everything I was looking for at a reasonable price. I got the Tactical Operator, which has night sights, a mag well funnel, ambi safety, 4 mags (which is more of a perk really), rail, stippeling everywhere and it has got some great reviews. The best part was the price it was about $200 under a grand. Sure its a little hard to find holsters for (due to its slide geometry), but they are out there.

Holster for Sig 1911 Tac Ops

Very cool gun but hard to find a holster for. Blade-Tech can makes holsters for the Sig 1911 Tactical Operator. You just have to call them, rather than placing the order online.

I was looking for a light compatible holster for the Sig 1911 Tac Ops plus TRL-1. At the moment Blade-Tech looks to be the answer. Its custom made so you have your choice of colors, belt attachment and retention. Pretty good customer service too.

I will post pictures in a month when I get it.

Surefire P2X Fury: 500 Lumens

500 lumen Surefire, what could possibly go wrong? That is a serious upgrade from my 200 lumen 6PX. $155 bucks is a bit steep, but when is Surefire ever not expensive.

How to Make Comment Spam

Every wonder how those dirty spammers are submitting their garbage to your blog? I did, so put my spammer hat on and took a stab at figuring it out.

First step: I fired up TamperData and watched what happened when I submitted a comment to my blog. I found a POST request to “/wp-comments-post.php” with the following data:

author
email
url
comment
submit
comment_post_is

There were others but they did not turn out to be nessicary.

Next, I needed to know how to simulate a POST using CURL. Quick Google search told me it was “-d”. So to submit a comment you would want something that looks like this:

curl -d “author=curltest&email=curltest%40test.com&url=curltesting.com&comment=this+is+another+curl+post+test&submit=Submit+Comment” http://example.com/blog/wp-comments-post.php

Now doing one at a time is not very spammy. To truly be evil we would need to make this into some sort of script.

The only hard part would be getting the “comment_post_id”. Basically I would write a shell script with a while loop that looks at a list of target blogs (that I had previously selected for no spam filters and in my subject area). For each target it would go look at the latest blog post. From there is would grep/sed/awk for the post ID. Then it would cram that into the CURL request and it’s off the annoy the world. After adding the script to my list of cron jobs.
