Long time for no blog entry, I know. I’m sure both of you are incredibly disappointed. Been working at the the new job, getting moved into the new apartment, trying to finish up the Mictlan “Prizefight” Video”. Almost there. Really close. It’ll be worth the weight (wait).

On an unrelated note I went to Design Camp last weekend. Ran into some great people I haven’t seen for awhile including Bill Moran, a faculty member from when I was at MCAD, and current Artistic Director at the Hamilton Wood Type Museum. Definitely going to go pay him a visit soon. Suggest you do the same. Also ran into Aaron Draplin, always a pleasure to talk with that guy. Not enough nice things to say about him. Lots of other new friends from design camp, tons of fun, even though it rained all weekend.

While I was up north I ducked into a few stores, found one thing I wanted to post on here with the quickness. Ran into an old antique store in Pine River that was (sadly) going out of business. Good news: everything was half off. Bad news: Probably the reality for a lot of stores up there. Regardless I found a ton of great stuff. Mainly old manuals and books. One cookbook collection yielded these Hamburger recipe pages that had some amazing title illustrations that seemed more suited for Old School Hip-Hop flyers than for Better Homes and Gardens.

Oh, and that new Raekwon is really good. Get fed lead burgers.

I love to play this game. It’s good fun. People send me stuff in the mail and I take the time to whip out a few iphone photos and throw them up on the blog. This week we two new mail pieces to share. The first comes to us from Justin Thomas Kay and UpNorth. Their zine One One Nine (Issue #3) has a dreamteam of artists featuring work from 123klan, 401K, Flowerpot, Human Empire, Jeremyville, The Little Friends of Printmaking, Makeset (Damien Correll, and Mike Perry), i-Manifest, Overture, and of course Upnorth. Spread highlights for me included 123Klan, 401K, and Makeset (yes I’m biased), but this really is a great example of how to make an engaging, meaningful zine with simple materials. It really is a beauty.

Up next is Minneapolis local Mike Burrill AKA Ultraluminous. Two new zines entitled “Fine Point” and “Field Guide” (printed on green and blue paper respectively). Fine Point maintains a more hand-drawn aesthetic, capitalizing on recreating classic typefaces (Kabel, Helvetica) while supplementing them with fresh original faces and sprinklings of skateboard pop culture. Field guide relies more on texture and geometry with instances of handmade elements breaking the rhythm of familiar shapes.

So, since this all seems to be going well for me (I get free zines and cool stuff), I think I’m going to continue the “Stuff I Got in the Mail” column. If you would like to be featured on “Stuff I Got in the Mail” it’s easy. Just send me something. I’ll get to keep whatever you send (shirts, zines, prints, posters, etc.), and you get free press to at least ten of my closest friends who read this blog occasionally. Sounds good to me. If you need my address, please email me at ghubacek@gmail.com and I’ll send you along the mailing address.

The Layer Tennis Season 2 Finals came to a wrap last friday when Shaun Inman and myself laced up our gloves one last time. The match was a pretty weird one. I don’t think either one of us really ever seemed to get our footing. Definitely one of the odder feeling games of Layer Tennis that have gone on lately. I ran into a major snafu in the eighth round when I put up what might be a layer tennis record of a sixty minute volley. Here’s a list of how I failed:

A) Used way too much of a music track that made the video way too long and therefore huge.
B) Used a really bad synth copy of a song from the wrong era.
C) Exported the video without sound
E) Five to ten minute transfer times to the server
D) Realized the video had no sound, had to re-export the video with sound
E) Five to ten minute transfer to the server
F) Challenges presented as to the legality of using bad cover sound
G) Eventual approval but more waiting as Coudal compressed and transfered the video
H) Restless crowd amasses outside my door with pitchforks
I) Video really wasn’t that funny in the first place, but especially after an hour.

So, in other words I made a huge snafu in the eighth round by trying to make a bad joke. Technical difficulties made the bad joke even worse. On the other hand, Inman played an amazing game. His serve was perhaps the most clever volley I’ve ever had lobbed against me, and it definitely set a weird pace for the match. We kind of struggled over being totally stumped the entire time but somehow pulled something together. His Layer 9 was exceptionally well done. Overall I’m not at all ashamed to have been beaten (or so it seems) from the guy who did this.

In general I think I’ve been able to be successful thus far in layer tennis by having a pretty good idea of what was going to be thrown at me, or by isolating enough of the variables of a match down to let me focus on one or two things at once. Shaun never let me get that comfortable with him, and his unexpected nature proved to be very difficult to overcome. I’m not at all ashamed at the game I put up, and I’ll most probably be seeing Shaun in the arena again some day. Until then, check out the match here, and throw #lyt and a #hubacek or a #inman in your next tweet to vote. Also be sure to check out the “beyond bad-ass” season recap video on the Layer Tennis home page

It’s a wonderland. Here’s some of the goodies that I found there.

Mongol Colored Pencils. Both the top and side of the box were beautifully laid out. The inside held all the original pencils minus two. All hard red.

Masel Stainless Steel Crowns. Yes, like crowns for your teeth. The inside of the box had an intricate arrangement of different sizes and shapes of crowns, along with a second row of small plastic tubes for some odd reason. Really cool.

And for last, and amazing Chinese cookbook cover. They just don’t make them like this anymore.

There’s more stuff over on my Flickr Set, also Celeste got some good photos while we were there too. Overall, not the worst way to spend an afternoon. I still have something from the last trip I haven’t got around to showing either, but that will have to wait for another day, I got work to do tonight.

Just got back from a week on Baby Lake with my girlfriend and her fam. Fantastic vacation, I’m probably as tanned as you will ever see me. But now that vacay is over it’s officially back to the grind. Here’s an idea of what’s been going on lately:

Atmosphere “Leak at Will” EP
Pick up this free download by signing up for an account at Fifth Element. It costs you nothing, all you have to do is register. Or you can take your chances downloading from one of The million music blogs that have it up for download. I cranked out the album cover for the release in an afternoon with an old image of Sean in an Uncle Sam costume. Perfect for your backyard barbecues or other summertime activities.

Mictlan Prizefight Music Video:
We should be releasing a trailer for this in the next two weeks or so. It’s been a long, long road. From shooting in January to the constant stream of editing, keying, and just plain working it out. It’s already filled up one TB hard drive, and is hard on its way to filling up the second. Should be a bunch of hubub about this one, a premiere party, all sorts of goodies and giveaways. More info to come. For now you can check out the old flickr set from the shoot, or just wait patiently like a good person would.

Layer Tennis Finals
After narrowly slipping by Draplin last week, I now face off withShaun Inman for the Finals. This is it, the ultimate moment in Layer Tennis. A relatively unexperienced underdog qualifyer vs. a returning champ for all the marbles. Should be fun, be sure to tune in. Action starts at 2:00 central I believe.

Odds & Ends
I got lots of stuff going on the back burner right now including a new look for a b-boy an b-girl event taking place at a local theatre. More on that as it comes about, but it’s always great to work with arts organizations, especially dance and theatre. Also, another project withRhymesayers and Atmosphere, a local eatery, one of the twin cities finest and most beloved DJ’s, and possibly a couple book projects among other things. Not to mention all the online store and personal projects which should begin to launch before the end of the summer.
