<description><![CDATA[The Queen’s Gallery / Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh | Exhibition of remarkable photography taken in Antarica by George Herbert Ponting (1870-1935) and Frank Hurley (1874-1922) marking the 100th anniversary of Captain Robert Falcon Scott&amp;rsquo;s (1868-1912) ill-fated journey to the South Pole. Ponting&amp;rsquo;s dramatic images record Scott&amp;rsquo;s Terra Nova expedition of 1910-12, which led to the tragic death of five of the team on their return from the South Pole. Hurley&amp;rsquo;s extraordinary icescapes were taken during Ernest Shackleton&amp;rsquo;s Polar expedition on Endurance in 1914-17, which ended with the heroic sea journey from Elephant Island to South Georgia. Both collections of photographs were presented to King George V and are today part of the Royal Photograph Collection. Also included in the exhibition are the Union flag presented by King George V to Shackleton, which the explorer carried with him throughout his epic journey; Polar medals; and books from the Royal Library, including a unique example of &amp;lsquo;Aurora Australis&amp;rsquo;, the first book to be printed in the Antarctic.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[British Museum , London | First exhibition in Europe to focus on the great age of Mexican printmaking in the first half of the 20th century. The show features 130 works by over 40 artists including prints by Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros. The highlights include Rivera’s famous ‘Emiliano Zapata and his horse’ which has achieved iconic status in 20th-century art. Between 1910 and 1920, Mexico was convulsed by a socialist revolution that aimed to topple the elite ruling class and improve conditions for society at large. The left-wing government which emerged laid great emphasis on art as a vehicle to promote the values of the revolution. Walls of public buildings were covered with vast murals, and workshops made prints for mass distribution. ]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[Lady Lever Art Gallery, Liverpool | Exhibition of personal photographs giving an insight into the life and leisure time of a middle class family at the beginning of the 20th century. The family in the photographs are the Urtons of Bebington on the Wirral. The pictures were taken by Jack Urton, a keen amateur photographer, who lived in Birkenhead and later in Bebington. We see his family at home and in the garden, with relatives and friends, and on days out in Wirral and further afield.  Improvements in technology meant that families no longer relied on commercial or professional photographers and their formal studio portraits. Instead, as demonstrated by Urton’s pictures of his own family, photography entered the domestic setting, showing people more relaxed and spontaneous. ]]></description>

The Spanish photographer  José Luis Rodríguez received this years this year’s Veolia Environment Wildlife Photographer of the Year award for his picture ‘The storybook wolf’.  José Luis visualized this image many years ago, when Iberian wolves first returned to Ávila in the Castilla y León region of northern Spain, and cattle ranchers declared war on them. His idea was a picture that would symbolize the ancient conflict between humans and wolves, while showing the beauty and strength of this fabled animal. Each year the competition finds the very best wildlife images taken by the world's top professional and amateur photographers. This year we received more than 43,000 entries from 94 countries.
