Musée du Petit Palais, Paris | Exhibition of works by the French artist Henry Cros (1840-1907) selected from the collection of the Musée du Petit Palais. Cros discovered the way to form pate de verre in the late 19th century by melting a glass paste in both open and closed molds through ancient Egyptian technique. His graphic and watercolour work is little-known and was constantly linked to Cros’ technical experiments: his coloured waxes, his molted glass as well as his testing with wax painting. Cros, the brother of the poet and inventor Charles Cros, was interested in researching new processes or rediscovering old techniques. The coloured wax works, close to Charles Cros’ poetic universe and to Symbolism in general, are masterpieces of the Symbolist period.

In 1996, workers on a construction site in Qingzhou City, Shandong province, found several hundred fragments of large size Buddhist stone sculptures lying in layers in a pit two meters deep and sixty square meters in area. These six-century figures represent the height in the Buddhist sculpture in China. These pieces still ill-known to the people are of outstanding size and refinement. The astonishing degree of preservation and the remains of the colourful pigmentation should convey the magic of the Asian Buddhist statuary to the French public.
