A very long time ago, when I was starting out with eve-olution I read a book that I can no longer recall but it had a title something like the subject of this blog.

Last night I did a talk and one of the questions was 'don't our dreams and goals have to be realistic?' Well the truth is this: If you set small goals you will achieve them and if you set big goals you will achieve them.

What have you chosen for yourself and your families this year?

5 years ago I set the intention to have an internet business so that I could be mobile when my youngest went to University. My youngest went to University last Summer and I now have an internet business - yes there were some twists and turns and drama and challenges and I tried many things but nothing stuck and nothing worked until now.

I set the intention and the time-frame. Do you see how manifestation works now?

I am sure you all know of Stephen Covey and his amazing book - The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People? Do you remember what the 7 Habits are?

Habit 1: Be proactive and take responsibility for your life

Habit 2: Begin with the end in mind (all things are created twice, the first is in your imagination)

Habit 3 : Put first things first (It's OK to say no)

Habit 4 : Think win-win (a character based code for human interaction)

Habit 5 : Seek first to understand, then to be understood (self explanatory)

Habit 6: Synergise (two heads are better than one)

Habit 7: Sharpen the saw (take care of yourself first)

Happy New Year

It certainly has started with a bang for us. I am reminded of the phrase 'be careful what you wish for' because I set the intention for a fast growth business last year and after many months or R & D that is exactly what we now have! however, this also brings challenges and requires discipline and focus.

I have written about the 5 steps to make your Best Year Ever (in whatever way is meaningful for you) but not from theory books or courses. I write from the experience of having built 3 businesses and I am now into my fourth. My challenge and intention is to grow a highly scalable enterprise this time. The first part of the coaching tool is called My Plan and in My Plan you reflect on 14 self-guided coaching questions that tease our your desires, beliefs, values and life roles. A long long journey

If anybody had ever told me that putting my goal setting and time management system on-line would take 18 months to develop I never would have started!

There have been too many late nights on Skype chatting to my (now) new best friend the software engineer in Warsaw, Luke. The dogs bed is now next to the desk in my office as I hardly ever move move away from there and I now feel educated about Yii frameworks, load balancing and Cloud Servers! What a difference to running around the country delivering leadership development!

However, I would do it all over again because I am so proud of what we have produced. I had you in my mind as I went along and I could hear the echo of all of the thousands of voices that I have heard in my seminars calling for something new and something different, something served our needs as women to manage our whole life in one place. 15 months ago I embarked on a plan to create a community for you. The Spa..for International Women's Day

I cant believe that it has been over 3 months since I wrote a blog post. Wowzer! Time has flown by while I have been buried in my cave having intense 24 hour Skype conversations with our genius software engineers in Poland. Yes, I have finally got round to doing what you have been asking me to do for over a decade...I have put my proprietary goal setting and time juggling system on-line so that YOU can use it too.

This has been no small project launch and I am very lucky to have an amazing team around me committed to making this a reality for you. Find out what your unconscious driver is

This is the final in this series of insight into the 6 Distinctions of Highly Successful Women.
Over the past six weeks I have focussed on what it takes to lead from the inside out as that is what matters most. In fact, I would go so far as to say who you are speaks so loudly I can’t hear what you are saying.

If you have already booked to attend the seminar then you will be given a questionnaire to discover your unconscious drivers. These are programmed responses from the past and they can become a source of stress for ourselves and others. Here is a little insight into the results…

If you aren’t coming to the seminar then you can probably guess your own triggers. Try to understand where your driver comes from (often things that our parents told us) and work on bringing better balance into your life. If your driver is causing you to use over-extended behaviour on a regular basis just breathe and ask yourself if there is an alternative that could be better for yourself and others.

All of the content on day one is about who you are - because you can’t lead anybody else until you first learn to lead yourself.

However, day two will take a dramatic turn in energy and we will be focussing on and visualising a massive personal dream. (Goals don’t work. If they did, we would all be happy)

Sometimes people come up with an idea to write a book or to become financially free or to start a business or to be CEO. At the beginning of the process I say ‘nobody will ever tell me that they can’t do something by the need of this process so think big’. In ten years not one person has told me that they still can’t achieve their goals. They have gone on to grow businesses, take up CEO positions, give up smoking, come off Prozac, finally get the body and health they want or meet the man/woman of their dreams.

The reason it works is because it is system I have developed personally. In other words you won’t find it in a textbook because it is unique. It only works.

The final distinction is 'Take Care of Yourself First' because you will be no good to anybody else if you don’t. Your fulfillment comes from looking after yourself and If you have set massive goals or are chasing a dream that makes you feel alive there will come a point when you feel overwhelmed by what you have to do or by the responsibility you have taken on. That is when you need to be strong and dig deep into inner reserves. You can’t be strong if you don’t know how to keep your body in a peak state for energy.

Here is a short home made video on what I do to do create peak state energy. Without peak energy not much else is possible (unless you are 22!)

Queen Bee Syndrome

I've just returned from Istanbul where I was asked to speak at the International Conference Centre for Kagider’s annual conference on women’s leadership. It was an incredible experience to hear fellow speakers from all over the world discussing issues that we are familiar with in the UK. Once again I was struck at the similarity of those issues and the main issue, sadly, still appears to be Queen Bee Syndrome.

It was proposed that there be a code of conduct for women leaders in order to prevent Queen Bee syndrome. I believe there is a better way and it is something I have been beating the drum about for over a decade… Women’s leadership development.

It is a known fact that it takes some bravery for any woman to ‘be herself’ in a testosterone filled working environment. Psychological experiments such as the famous Milgram experiment prove that people are willing to ignore their own conscience in order to be obedient to authority - even if it means hurting somebody.

If the need to conform is so strong in the human psyche is it any wonder that women, generally, tend to become like a bloke in a skirt when they hit senior ranks? The few women who remain powerful are the ones who have a deep understanding of their needs, values and beliefs. Masculine energy is strength. Feminine is power, but not too many women know how to be in feminine power.

McKinsey recently found that executive coaching helps women advance careers further and yet too many women are reaching the top without personal development. Hence the Queen Bee syndrome which is not, as most believe, based on selfishness but on a need to conform.

Every human being will find a way to get the first four needs met and if we inadvertently get our need for certainty and significance met through acting like a bloke in a skirt and conforming to the culture of the predominant group, then we most certainly will. Unless, of course, we have had some specialist coaching and know that the quality of our lives is in direct proportion to the level of uncertainty that we can handle.

The other choice is burn out, guilt and exhaustion from trying to be something you aren’t.

The Machiavellian Power Grab

Have you been following the news recently? Did you read about the apparent "whacking" of the former Citigroup boss who was presented with his resignation letter by the Chairman which has been described as a Machiavellian power grab? Or did you hear about how UBS traders were locked out of their offices last week as part of a cull of 10,000 staff? Or the fact that Cynthia Carroll has now departed from her role as CEO at Anglo American leaving only two female CEO’s in the FTSE 100?
Not many women enjoy power politics because women generally have a wider life view than that required to run a large corporation. By that I mean wider values. Carroll’s reforming zeal put backs up at Anglo American and few will thank her for improving Anglo’s safety and environmental record.
So in the midst of all of this, how on earth do you decide who are you and what you stand for? On the 6 Distinctions of Highly Successful Women seminar we use Stephen Covey’s famous funeral excercise to unearth our deepest values. It can be quite emotional but it has been getting transformative results for over a decade.

The reason that this intervention works is because it goes beyond our stories by bypassing the conscious mind. Old memories are stored in our brains and they create future judgments which lead to actions and habits and ultimately your destiny. If you have little money, no love, rare success, fleeting fulfillment or lack of anything it is because you haven’t re-wired your mind in a way that aligns with your values. This isn’t a logical process and it wont make sense but a decade of results speak for themselves.

How one woman became CEO

Can women have it all?

You may have seen Anne-Marie's recent Article in the Atlantic which has already caused a lot of controversy and many people have blogged about it and commented in varying polarised ways.

Here is my take: This was written in response to a blog from a leading corporation

'It was easier when the children were younger as I could hire au pairs who were able to take care of the house and the children (I have been a single parent over the past 10 years so had no other support)

However, the past few years have been what I call the ‘dark period’ ..the dreaded teenage years. You can’t delegate this to anybody and nobody is qualified to ‘parent’ this phase except the Mother or Father. I have dealt with 3 lots of GCSE’s 3 lots of A levels and 3 lots of University (the latter still in progress) I have also had to deal with them passing out at 3am in the morning in the streets, feinting in Boots, bouts of self doubt about body image from living in the Surrey Stock Broker belt. In other words 2 life threatening hospital visits, 2 drops outs from College and Uni and weekly emotional ‘teenage girl’ metaphorical car crashes! Oh yes and one real car crash where the car was written off at 3am in the ice and snow.

It sounds awful and sometimes it is. It tests my juggle not struggle philosophy to the limit but the rewards are immense. I have three accomplished, beautiful adult daughters and we are a close-knit family and I have an outstanding and fulfilling career.

I wouldn’t give up either aspects of my life. It is the whole that makes my life complete. I am passionate about leadership development for women at mid to senior levels because I can relate to them! It is about life, not leadership theory! They must make choices with the end in mind. Not make ‘non-choices’ and drift to an unsatisfactory end.

All of this is why I love what I do and one of the reasons that I suggest organisations make sure that women’s development is lead by somebody who a) has children and b) has a high pressure career as well

Two of my daughters tweeted this week how proud they are of me and the third introduced me to her organisation a few weeks ago where her colleagues now say 'you must be so proud of your Mum'

You may have heard that Stephen Covey passed away today.

For those of you who are involved in the development of others or of yourself, you will know what an amazing man he was. He was the author of ‘The Seven Habits of Highly Effective people’ and voted by Time Magazine as in the top 25 most influential Americans.

The Authentic Leadership seminar was largely based on Coveys’ incredible work. I wrote it myself personally during the year of 2001. It has been re-written several times since but I still use the famous funeral exercise that Covey made famous in order for women to know their values and lead authentically. It is very powerful.

Gender IQ and being a change agent

Here are some top tips from women who came on one of my seminars about how we can be change agents for a more inclusive working culture

q Consider stakeholders when embarking on a new project which could lead to cultural changes. This would ensure joined up thinking and communication. When it is time to launch the changes there are no hidden surprises for anyone - giving a professional image and credibility.

q Have the courage to challenge upwards as a senior female leader. Quite often given the choice it is easier to take the option to only manage down. Challenging upward starts to present recognition - having a voice and ensuring it is heard.

q Have confidence, by overcoming any fears, to challenge in a positive way.

q In hiring make sure that inequities are managed i.e. broaden the acceptable range of acceptable leadership styles.

q ‘Call’ behaviour and encourage zero tolerance to unacceptable behaviour when done to you or others.

q Raise awareness re differences, equipping men and women to understand and build on the synergy.

q Change your approach when required i.e. flex communication style. In other words remember to align and re-direct!

q As leaders – take responsibility for embedding values in the organisation.

q Clarify what ‘good’ or acceptable behaviour looks like.

q Explain the commerciality for changing the culture i.e. to increase market share through understanding the customer better, retaining talent, avoiding ‘group think’ through diversity.

q Encourage men and women in being themselves.

q Lead by example and ‘role model’ inclusive behaviours and flexible working.

q Recognise people as individuals not stereotypes.

q Avoid gender connotations.

q Recruit/enrol and influence at the top as a key imperative. Remember that people don’t know what they don’t know.

q Consider how would men respond to this activity?

Why women are going to save the world. Penned by a man

More from the beautiful feminine JUMP Forum in Brussels where we even had a Harpist on stage! One of my fellow speakers has written an article that I wanted to share for it's insight but also because I believe it highlights how far behind we are with our thinking in the UK

As a man, I became a fervent feminist. Not only because I love women, but because I firmly believe that their intrinsic qualities – still too much unconscious – are the cornerstones of tomorrow’s world, and the keys of the solutions to the numerous systemic man-made challenges we cope with today.

A shift from patriarchal to matrifocal societies.

Not because it looks good for diversity or quotas, but because after meeting very powerful men in top positions, I was soooo disappointed by the ego- and control-driven visions. Combined with lots of fear to lose the acquis, they are too afraid to shift thinking, too well conditioned, and thus became blind for the beauty of which is emerging – as we speak. I don’t blame them, but still admire those who have taken responsibilities for protecting our businesses and our families.

The true solutions are slightly out of their scope. The drama is that women had to behave like men to survive in this man-made world, and ended up accepting the template of masculine leadership. So, those powerful women also became blind for their own true power…

Our challenge today is to activate underused resources, so we can all live – and not only survive – on this planet, allowing ourselves to open up to, the magic of creation. The biggest underused resource is human talent itself. Personal power of the individual. This is the biggest waste inside of what became a humanly unsustainable society. Activating their underused potential is recuperating their engagement, creativity, entrepreneurial drive, motivation, specific vocations, to – all together – give original and sustainable solutions to problems caused by the greedy egoistic patriarchal control-freaked society. Replace division by unity, replace the sword by the communities. Stop suffering on all levels, and bring sustainable abundance to all, wherever they are, and thus reconnect to our mother planet and to the common good. Walk away from expensive complexity – to enter serene simplicity, let go enslaving stress and fear – and reconnect ourselves by slowing down; transform man-made obsolete and inefficient structures – into agile empowering action- and solution-oriented networks offering bright visions for our children.

Grow up from childishness to a mature conscious humanity. Those who decide to succeed this shift will be the beneficiaries of this reconnexion, and the next world will be theirs. Those who want to stay in their ego and bellybutton will suffer even more. It’s already around us. Just look.

So, back to evidence: why are women going to save the world ?

I detect 7 keys.

1. Intrinsic human qualities: Perception, intuition, recognition, listening, relation, empathy, gratitude

In a stressing world, where everyone is squeezed into an accelerating system, there is so much alienation that we don’t know “who we are” any more. These specific “materning” qualities are like honey in a wild forest. It gives warmth; it offers vision on ourselves and on the world for a more balanced life. It’s good for us, for our families, for our teams, and for the clients, shareholders and stakeholders. So it’s good for our companies and society. Women have been obliged to behave like

men to survive and to make careers in this man-made world… so lost part of these precious values. These specific intrinsic feminine qualities are a key to success in our next world. It’s also a good balance for the tensed life in which we live.

2. Higher purpose, serve “common good”, nurture community

It’s scientifically proved: the highest leverage for motivation is purpose, meaning. A strong vision serving common good. Any project driven by a drive to add value to “something big” has more chance to mobilize than serving someone’s ego or wallet. A man is by nature more of a hunter – a woman more of a community nurturer. As a mother – originally – takes the role f protecting the family in the grotto, the man would go out and hunt for resources to bring back to the grotto. But through history, women also wanted to learn hunting, which is great, and men had to learn to care, which is a historical opportunity. Now, as resources are becoming scarce, the community enlarged to local communities, cities, nations. And we have to learn to better use all resources, including people’s talent, to optimalize chances of survival. But a condition is to point together in the same direction with the same common vision. Women are the best for this… but real women, not those women behaving like men.

3. « good housemother » management with common sense

We talk about “good housefather management”. When we see the result of what men are able to mismanage, I rather trust on the common sense and “good housemother” management. They are more able to ally stakeholders in a common vision than men – who are more worrying about their ego and power struggle then about long term vision.

4. Introspection, self-knowledge, questioning, humility, slowing down, respecting cycles of life

The first ones to sit down, slow down and think about behavior and existential issues are women. Check out the public in these seminars on human development and spirituality – whatever color they take. Men are more focus and follow intention in a more structured way and thus less willing to question their “hunt”… the prey could walk away. So we definitely need both, but for the time being, a little humble questioning is not a luxury. The world we have created has come to its limits, and we have to stop and think. Let’s learn from women – and men – who have developed these feminine qualities. For some reason, men are also now obliged to slow down and reflect. Historical records of burn-out and depression blocked the “ascension” of too hard working men. I’ve seen lots of my friends between 35 and 45, crashing in the midst of flamboyant careers. They are the first ones to reflect and introspect on purpose, on their true potential, on their possibility to contribute to a meaningful world. The must is a slow-down. It looks contraproductive, to take time, but it saves sooooo much precious time and energy because by developing consciousness, we can focus on priorities.

5. Ability to open space and protect it – keep it open For emergence of the new Nurturing growth

The physical nature of women is to procreate. How does this principle work? A fertile space (the womb), right timing, + a seed. This space has to be protected and nurtured. Respected cycles of life, 9 months, not 1 or 6… Men are in a hurry. We need women to open fertile space for the new ideas, innovations, new societal and business models. Time, space, emotional and intellectual cornerstones. Clear quests. And… patience ! It’s impossible to reap benefits the next day from fragile emerging seeds. We need to wait and be surprised, and allow ourselves to see very different things emerge. These are the things we need for our next world.

6. Emotionally sensitive The most powerful resource: manifested negative emotions anger, fear, frustration, sadness, resentment,… Dive into your roots, your strength – your uniqueness – deal with ego’s and childish behavior

Where does entrepreneurial drive come from ? does it pop up by chance ? Can we program it ? Prepare it ? No. it’s an impulse. Energized by a strong intuition and passion. Funnily, when you observe the biggest achievers of history, they all went through really tough events in their life. The bigger the ordeal/frustration/anger/sadness, the stronger the drive to “exist” though any kind of achievement. We are trained to retain emotions, not to express them. Men are very good at that. Women less. They are more sensitive and thus more capable of bursting out . The recuperation and recycling of this energy is fantastic – if well channeled into realization. The focus on intention – after accepting and expressing emotional liabilities – is actually a male quality. So basically, combining consciously and intelligently these key, will enable us to innovate for the better.

7. Multi-task, collaborative delegation, creative prefrontal. Discover and manage systemic models. Activate hidden resources. Mobilize around common vision. Manage chaos. Create new value

The other intrinsic quality of women is multi-tasking: taking care of kids, food, protection, resource management, job, elderly, shelter, supporting husbands, managing all kind of issues and chaos. They are the absolute best in this. Now, chaos is there and there will be even more of it. Can we ask them for advice ? Are we men humble enough to learn from women ? Learn how to get the best out of any hard situation, transform ordeals into value, difficulties into opportunities, discouragement into drive, chaos into order, scarcity into abundance. Like the earth, our mother, offering abundance of growth and prosperity.

Conclusion

Grow our awareness about intrinsic qualities, and consciously use male or female polarity. Concretely, it means, once in a while, calm down and take a feminine polarity to enter into

connexion with earth, with grounding, to have access to precious information – and then, enter into a strong male energy, activating intention to enable achievement. Basically, become mature human beings. Grow in consciousness, for contribution to our common project – the most fascinating shift in history. This is not just another Kondratieff cycle…
