After graduating from Woodbridge, I went to college at University of New Mexico at Albuquerque. I did not go to Albuquerque by myself. For reasons that I am not certain of, Nickie Wauchop also began attending school at UNM. Also, for reasons I am not certain of, my dad suddenly had PCS orders to Kirtland AFB. Of course, Kirtland AFB is located in Albuquerque, NM. I found this amazing, because I had been told my parents were considering orders to Alaska. However, shortly after I decided that I was going to UNM, my dad had orders to the same place.

Fortunately, they did not require me to reside with them. The lived in a suburb, about 45 minutes away from the school (and the base). I resided in the dorms - so while I had my independence, I also had the security of knowing that they were a short distance away.

The most profound statement I can say about that time was that I played a lot of volleyball. A typical day consisted of me getting up about 9:30 am (my first class was at 8, my second was at 9) so I could make my third class of the day on time - volleyball class! (This was also the only class I had that took attendence). After my 10:00 volleyball class, I'd often stay and "audit" the 11:00 volleyball class. I'd then grab a quick lunch, and by 1:00-1:30 I'd be outside playing volleyball on the grass courts. A much different game than the indoor games in the morning! I'd stay there until 4 or 5, and then head in (mind you, Chemistry class was at 1).

I DID actually manage to attend most of my classes the first day (though not Chem!) and pick up a syllabus, so I at least knew when the tests were. And as anyone who's ever known me might expect, I breezed through the tests by reading the covered chapters the night before. For Chemistry, I did have to attend the labs 1 hour/week, so every now and then I'd ask one of my fellow lab partners when the next test was and what it covered. That worked reasonably well, until one day I was showing one of them my fancy $200 calculator that you could program formulas in, input the variables, and it would give you the answer. She asked if we were allowed to use it on the tests. I replied "Well, you're not supposed to, but. . ." to which she asked if I had used it on the test yesterday. I regained my composure quickly after bluring out "what test?"

All was well, however, because the professor dropped your lowest grade, and my lowest grade happened to be a ZERO! Feel free to hate me at this point.

Life continued in this manner until finals week. Now, for some reason, my roommate decided to wait until the week of finals to buy a Sega Genesis. Trouble Trouble Trouble. This made it a bit more difficult for me to find the time to actually read the material that the tests were going to cover, so I didn't bother. Priorities. I looked at the clock one day, and realized I had 15 minutes until my Chemistry final started. The choice was to dig out my calculator, run across campus and take a test that I was ill-prepared for, or continue playing Sonic the Hedgehog.

I beat Sonic the Hedgehog that day.

Things were still OK, grade wise - so with no final (and a professor that wouldn't let me make up a final without a REALLY good excuse - I did visit him to try to make up the final but realized that there was nothing I could tell him that would allow me to take the final late) my chem grade was not an A or B, but I still managed to pull off a C. Feel free to REALLY hate me at this point.

The big turning point for me came after I took the final in my macrobiology course.I did actually manage to find time to skim the necessary chapters. Not fully read, definitely not study, but skim. I went and took the test, and for the first time in my life, I had a test that blew my mind. I literally did not have a coherent thought for 2 hours after taking that test. I kind of stumbled around the student union in a daze. At this point, I realized that I was not ready for college. While I was certainly intellectually ready, I was so tired of and bored with school and did not have the maturity to drudge through the material and attend class, I realized that I was not in the right place for me at the time. I called my mother later that week and arranged to have lunch with her that day.

During lunch, I explained to my mother how the test had blown my mind, and how I realized that I wasn't really ready to learn anything at college, and so I was dropping out after only a year. I then told her of my plans for the future - I was going to join the Navy.

Some people might recall a Friday the 13th comic I used to do, but if you were part of a select group of people in my Senior year you might've been privy to Jonstone. Jonstone started off as a comic strip that i drew one day in Mr. Gardener's class. He was a Private Investigator in the not-so-distant future. It was more comedy than action.

Well, over the years I've done a lot of plotting and background work on this stuff, and when the time is right I plan on developing these ideas into an online comic strip. I talk more about these ideas in a future blog (when time permits).
