Patent Family Tree - Another Free Tool from MaxVal

MaxVal is glad to roll out its next version of the Patent Family Tree tool.

Generally speaking, a patent family is a group of patents which, like the members of a family, are all related to each other, in this case by way of the priority or priorities of a particular patent document.

This is an online free tool which is used to generate patent family trees for given patents. Given a patent #, application # or publication #, this tool will generate a graphical tree representation of the family based on Genealogy and Timeline.

Patent Family Tree

MaxVal uses INPADOC's extended family system to retrieve not just the equivalents but all related patent applications for the same priority irrespective of the complexity.

Given one patent number in a family, this tool identifies all the related applications and maps them along the timeline. This mapping also includes abandoned and unpublished applications that are identified from the priority details.

The intelligence built in the tool not only automatically color codes the countries but also connect the related patents based on the priority details.

Each node is populated with the bibliographic details extracted from public domain. Clicking on the patent will display the bibliographic details along with the current legal status (INPADOC).

The inclusion of legal status information in this also sometimes retrieves additional links, e.g. for divisional applications, continuations, continuations in part or national publications of first filings of PCT (international) applications, where the priority links are often missing.

Background:

As per Patent Marking Statute, 35 U.S.C. 287 (a), failure to properly mark an apparatus or system, "no damages shall be recovered by the patentee in any action of infringement, except on proof that the infringer was notified of the infringement and continued to infringe thereafter, in which event damages may be recovered only for the infringement occurring after such notice."

The America Invents Act (AIA) gives patentees a new option for effective patent marking: virtual marking via a website. Under newly amended 35 U.S.C. § 287, a patentee may use a website to provide a listing of its products and any associated patents (patents where at least one claim of the patent covers the product)

There are hundreds of tools and apps how to search, process and analyse patent information. Here are some of my latest discoveries. Four interesting solutions how to make your work more effective.

The PATSY Bookmarklet

Patents are extremely difficult to read. With PATSY Bookmarklet you can go to ANY web page, select a patent number and have PATSY process it for you.

The language used in them can be turgid and arcane, full of long lists that enumerate all possible variants of an invention. The USPTO compounds this by formatting the text in printed patents into narrow columns.

PATSY aims to change all that. Enter a US patent number, PATSY pulls it from the USPTO and reformats it on the fly:

Dense blocks of text are broken up into separate sentences
Long sentences are split at semicolons into multiple lines
The original text for a bock can be viewed by clicking the arrow above each block
Significant terms are highlighted
Patent numbers are highlighted and linked to PATSY or patent office sites
References to scientific papers are linked to the NIH PubMed site
Google Translate lets you read the text in other languages

Patent Library

Patent Libraryis a free worldwide patent publication service. User can retrieve world wide original OCR processed text searchable pdf patent documents from patent number. User can share patent information with a variety of people inside and outside the company using permalink patent bulletins through e-mail, Twitter and blogs.

User can retrieve world wide original pdf patent documents easily. 30 types of patents from around the world, in English, German, French, Spanish, Russian and more, have undergone OCR (Optical Character Recognition) processing in their entirety, and the text can be searched using pdf viewer such as Adobe Acrobat Reader. OCR-supported countries are tagged "OCR" on the input rules of Patent Library Top Page.

By displaying patent documents on two screen areas, user can refer to figures while reading claims or specifications.
