Keynote Speaker: Dr. Douglas Fisher, Professor, San Diego State University
Dr. Douglas Fisher is a faculty member at San Diego State University whose entire career has been focused on English learners and students who live in poverty. He has developed practices around the theory of Gradual Release of Responsibility. First proposed as an alternative to student independent study and worksheets, the practices he describes help move learning responsibilities from teacher to student.

Keynote Title: Better Learning through Structured Teaching
The Keynote will explain a framework based on Gradual Release of Responsibility that consists of:

Focus lessons - establishing purposes in both content and language lessons with modeled thinking

Guided instruction - differentiating instruction for groups of students based on their assessed learning needs

Collaborative learning - allowing student interactions while they apply new learning to unique situations

Independent practice - ensuring that students use what they learn independently

The gradual release of responsibility method demonstrates learning when teachers move from assuming “all the responsibility for performing a task to a situation in which the students assume all of the responsibility” as explained by Duke and Pearson in 2004.
Empowering Innovative Teacher Leaders, Jennifer Alexiou-Ray with Dr. Connie Bain and Cassie Raulston, Vestavia Hills, Alabama bained@vestavia.k12.al.us
Presenters were from Alabama. Notes available at http://www.Techtimeforkids.com This session dealt with professional development and technology. The presenters felt that key components of tech integration included a teacher’s lap, ceiling-mounted projector, document camera, student response system, sound system, interactive mounted interactive whiteboard in the front of the room, classroom digital cameras and video cameras. Administrators enforced the installations (i.e., if teachers didn’t want the items, for example, didn’t want the IRI taking up their previous white board space). Once teachers saw how to effectively use it, it won them over. Goals of the presentation were to show:
1. How teacher leaders impact professional develop
2. How to create a PD model
3. How to implement a technology initiative

How teacher leaders impact PD: Teacher buy-in and PD are two huge components of a tech initiative roll-out. Utilizing teachers as leaders helps to achieve a higher level of classroom instruction and teacher buy-in. (Dozier, 2007) Successful teacher leaders have the ability to collaborate w/ others, obtain support for their vision, and build consensus.

If you don’t have professional development, your roll-out will not be successful. Models: web-based, coaching and mentoring, inquiry, train-the-training, observation and assessment, individually guided, face to face. Their hybrid model was: Took core groups of teachers in each school and trained them to become the “expert” on that piece of equipment (train the trainer). Also looked at coaching & mentoring: each was then responsible for teachers they would mentor on a daily basis. Gave them a list of “opportunities” (responsibilities) - Observation & assessment: gave teachers opportunities to go and watch teachers who were using technologies so they could assess the methods and go back and use what they saw. Another was web-based trainings on areas that teachers wanted to learn. Their model looked like:

At bottom, stakeholders, then administration, then tech personnel, then teacher trainers, then teachers, with students on left and right sides of triangle.

Implementation: How make the tech piece and PD work together? Process: communicate, research, collaborate, prepare, prioritize, implement, evaluate. All five are very important, interdependent, cyclical manner.

Came up with ideal standard classroom. Then did research as a committee to find the research to back up what they were going to propose to the school board. Did school visits, including neighboring schools with similar economic status. Suggested the teachers have the laptops at least a year in advance of rolling out furth tech changes, such as the 1-1 laptops for students. Next stage was to build the infrastructure, including wiring, circuit breakers, etc. Alabama: Recycle computers every four years - five year-old computers not counted on their state report card. They have one tech for every two schools. In the first year, have varied use of equipment, depending on the teacher’s comfort level. Developed a new AUP because of new equipment. Had a teacher contract to sign in order to take the laptop home, and had 3 lawyers approve it. ITS distributed laptops at each school after training and signed contracts. Logical choice, research shows if need to cut something, don’t cut the voice enhancer. Good system, $2,000. Can be $900.

Evaluate through surveys as a gauge of whether or not they are meeting the teachers’ need, what new things to offer, etc. The head ITS does school visits every month at each school. They also had the school board members go on school tours with them. They saw for themselves the impact the technology had on the instruction. Trying to get the board to make the tech budget a line item. They were first in the state to put in the entire interactive classroom. Ask teachers to come in 5 days earlier to train on MacBook, interactive white boards, etc. Paid for those days. They now have teachers knocking on their doors to come and teach for them because of the tech environment. Pre-K through 12. Tech in every class. Do not have EETT funds. Vestavia Hills City Schools. Why voice enhancers? How does this add? Logical choice, research shows if need to cut something, don’t cut the voice enhancer. Good system, $2,000. Can be $900. Approx. 6,000 students. Funded 1 cent sales tax county tx, and went to all of the school system. Could be used for capital improvements or technology. Got $55 million, $12 million went to technology. What gets measured gets managed. As tech coordinator, you are not responsible for the technology culture at a particular site. Site admin is responsible for culture at his/her site. Tech coordinator is responsible for making site admin aware of effect of a tech product is having (or not having) on learning at admin’s site, and let site admin know that you are available to help them get the results that are possible for that piece of technology (or software).

Antwon Lincoln, Dept. of Education’s $10 million Study of Ed Technology: What They Got Wrong and Right!
Anton was a very dynamic speaker, with a very important message. Technology will not change the educational environment unless it is supported by proper leadership and support, including professional development. He called his topic The Seed - how technology is a seed that must be correctly planted and cultivated. He has also written a book, Confessions of a Technology Leader: Understanding the Role of a Site Technology Leader (Authored by Antwon is Chula Vista district tech coordinator) TLConfessions.com, AntwonLincoln@mac.com. Implementation model for technology: 5 critical things: Focus – what is the purpose of this program? Why do I need to spend $ on this product? If I don’t know, teachers will become confused. If you don’t have the items on the left, you get the items on the right. Strategy: if no strategy, won’t be able to push it further once you start. If you have all of these, you will get successful growth. If you don’t, you won’t. Invite salesperson to come to committee meeting and not say anything unless the committee asks them a question.
ESchool News, Ed Study Slams Software Efficacy. Article said achievement scores were not statistically higher in classrooms using these reading and math programs than in classrooms without the products. “ Ed-tech experts say the results aren’t surprising, given how the software was implemented in the participating schools.” Reason for the results, compared to schools that did show achievement gains were that coaching and peer support throughout the school year did not occur with the schools that did not show gains. “Brief training at the beginning of the year is not sufficient. Ongoing and sustainable professional development that provides support and mentoring or coaching for the teachers ensures that technology tools and resources are used in ways that lead to increased student achievement”. “Student use of the software accounted for only about 10-11% of the total instructional time for the entire school year in each of the four experiment groups--well below what most of the products were designed for.” WhatWorks.org – Website that evaluates software. Make sure what you’re buying will work on your districts’ computers. Make sure there is real research that shows the impact of the potential technology. It’s all about leadership. His challenge: be a leader, not a lemming (youtube fedex www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRUK9cHFj5s. It’s a process. Leadership is the catalyst for student success. All teachers are leaders – they lead their students. The study basically showed that leadership was the key to success or lack of success regarding technology integration. The product/technology, is the seed. It’s up to us as teacher/leaders, as admin/leaders to cultivate the growth.
Chris Dede, Immersive, Collaborative Simulations and Neo-Millennial Learning Styles: Implications for Education
Dr. Dede participates in research that investigates the learning impact of a simulation game called River City(http://muve.gse.harvard.edu/rivercityproject). The research has continued for about 8 years, with results showing that collaborative situated learning environments provide greater learning results that traditional learning strategies.

Of special interest was Dede’s discussion of automation vs. amplification, and a book by F. Levy and R.J. Murnane. (2004), The New Division of Labor: How Computers are Creating the Next Job Market. Princeton, NJ: Princeton Univ Press. Dede’s point was that, a generation from now, only two skills will be necessary for people to do better than machines: The first is expert decision making – (like what a auto mechanic does: when machine can’t diagnose a car problem, and something still doesn’t work, the mechanic needs to make an expert decision). The second is developing complex communication skills. His question is, are we preparing students w/ these skills that make them different from machines? Two pedagogy concepts Dede emphasized that ca help to do this are distributed cognition/learning, and situative learning environments.

Another project he has been involved with is Handheld Augmented Reality Project (HARP), which is an interactive, collaborative role-playing game that students play as they interact with the environment. The game is called Alien Contact Connection, headed up by Matt Dunleavy, from Harvard, created for Middle School math and literacy curriculum. A good concept I went away with was Dede’s idea that technology is like clothes- we have to put them on to get the benefit out of them, and they should be tailored to meet our specific needs.
Dr. Liu posted his entire presentation online at http://webspace.ship.edu/hliu/conference/ilc08.html, including links to the references to the free online games related to standards. He has also organized an amazing amount of links for free online games for grade levels K12- at http://21professors.com/LBG/lbg.html These are organized by grade level and subject. This is a work-in-progress, and he invited conferees to help participate with him in this project. A visit to his Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania Webpage (http://webspace.ship.edu/hliu/) also provides a tremendous amount of links to educational information regarding gaming and learning theory. I know I’m going to spend a lot of time mining the wealth available in these resources!

Wednesday, October 15, 10am-1pm
I spent a lot of time in the Exhibit hall talking with vendors about SRS (student response systems), also known as clickers. I talked with Renaissance (we currently have a few sets of these at one school), Promethean Activision clickers, and the ResponseCards from Turning Technologies (www.turningtechnologies.com). For the price and ease of use, I liked the ResponseCards the best. They don’t do as much as the others, but cost less, and will be easier for our teachers to use. I also liked the pad made by eInstruction. They also had clickers, and these might be my 2nd-runner-up choice as far as ease of use and cost (www.einstruction.com). I also liked the “pads” eInstruction has. For about $495, the teacher has a pad they can use to walk around with (very lightweight), and interact with whatever is projected from their computer onto a screen (does not need to be an Interactive White Board - or IWB). The purchase of the “pad” also includes the purchase of eInstruction’s software that comes with their IWB, even without purchasing their IWB. eInstruction also comes with banks of questions from ExamView, which is their product. They said the other clickers don't come with this. This might be worth the price of going with these clickers. For example, QuizDom also offers a yearly subscription to ExamView question banks with their clickers, but they cost over $1,000 each year, and that is just for the ExamView for your specific grade level, per teacher! The available resources look like they are compatible with the kinds of learning resources provided by SMART, but without the cost of having to purchase a SMART Board. Teachers can write over any Webpage, PPT, etc., shown on the computer, (various colors, as writing SMART Board’s environment) by using the pad. They can even turn handwritten text into type, and capture the screen to a digital picture. Looks like it could be an effective teaching tol for the price. We have two classrooms that use Senteos with SMART Boards. These are good for the price, and come with a lot of ready-made lessons and questions, but you need to use their Notebook software to use their ready-made questions, and can only get the Notebook software if you have a SMART Board. However, it appears that you can purchase Senteos and use them without any Notebook software, so you don't necessarily have to have a SMART IWB to use the Senteos. The Promethean clickers also have a lower cost clicker - the higher cost one, ActiVision also allows students to text in answers. The lower cost one is like the Turning Technologies Response Cards (about $1,500), and just provides students w/ TF, multiple choice responses. With the Promethean, you get the question banks Promethean has, and supposedly all the software that you would get if you had a Promethean Board (which would really be a great deal). The vendor was going to confirm that for me. .Finally, I talked with people from QuizDom. Their prices were also competitive for their low-end model, about $1,500 for a set of 24. All of these sytems are RF vs. IR. RF means the students don't have to be pointing directly at the sensor, which is better. IR systems are cheaper, but don't work as well. QuizDom is the only system that also has interactive games built in to their quizzes. Also, all the pre-made quizzes have a slide with the question, a slide with the correct response, and then an explanation slide as to why the correct answer was the correct answer. Pedagogically, this system was the most sound. However, I didn't like the fact that you had to purchase (for each teacher) a subscription to their bank of questions on a yearly basis. Again, my vote, for ease of use and price, was the Turning Technologies ResponseCard, and second, eInstruction clickers, followed by the low-end Promethean clickers, then the Promethean low-end clickers (I think they are called something like Activote).
Joe had a lot of resources available, and these can be accessed from http://www.joewoodonline.com. He is a science teacher in the Sacramento area who loves technology. An idea I hadn’t heard before is to create something in Google Maps that you then bring into Google Earth to create a file you use for a class. He suggested we check out Google Earth Blog, which provides Google Earth lovers up-to-date information at http://gearthblog.com/. Of course, he spoke very highly of Jerome Burg’s LitTrips, which, if you haven’t seen it, is VERY awesome. Unfortunately, these were in a handout, not collected as a set of links on a Webpage. I really need to look at Atomic Learning, because, as I understand it, my district has access to it through my CTAP involvement. Martin C.– do we have a username and password to get into this? Cheryl opened by showing us her session topics in worlde (http://worlde.net). This site will take a paragraph, for example, and make a word graphic out of it. It takes the repeated words and arranges them in larger text, with other key words in smaller text. Cheryl’s “wordle” emphasized some of her main her topic ideas of prior knowledge, engagement, and authentic learning. Cheryl shared some of the latest research on what today’s students need in our instruction in order to learn more deeply. Along with the research, she would share an example of how teachers have fleshed out these ideas, such as the Actionable Algebra ideas featured in Tlannia Norfar’s webpage, and the ASCEND schools in Oakland, CA authentic learning strategies, featured in a George Lucus Foundation video. Another good example of her point on students’ need to have visuals, was the GapMinder visual data site, the WISE (Web-based Inquiry Science Education) site, and the TED conferences.
Rushton has his links for this session posted at snurl.com/googlettuff. A new resource for me was the 3Dwarehouse that can be used with Google’s SketchUp. Another new tool to me was Google.comEducators – one resource this site has includes posters!.

11:30-12:30
Ntiedo Etuk, Learning in Multi-User Virtual Games
Ntiedo gave some insight into the educational video game phenomenon, and shared results from tests using education gaming tools. His company just got a city-wide contract in New York City, and is in other cities as well, such as Chicago. They saw 52% of the students involved in their online-math (Algebra) gaming intervention increase by an entire grade level. After the pilot, NY included the program in 30 other schools last year. They ran a competition and had winners come at the end of the year from other schools. The DOE brought in another 600 students to cheer on their classmates at the tournament in the online gaming environment (Tabula Digita). Website is http://www.dimensionm.com. They can login with a username and password to see how their friends are doing if they are in the competitions. The games are aligned with national ad state standards. Educators can see how the topics you teach align with missions in the games. You can use different missions at different times – don’t have to use the entire game (Multiplayer pre-alegabra missions). You can play within the school only using the school intranet, or play online with other players throughout the world. Can set own password as a teacher to restrict the students your students play with. You can choose the game, topic, level of difficulty, number of layers, the amount of time (5, 10, 15, 20 min). If a school or district buys, kids can play at home free of charge. The graphics look just like other commercial 3D gaming worlds – very well done. For example, the student gets the message: Land on platforms with integers that add to 7. Purpose of the program is not to supplant the teacher: purpose is motivation. Has elementary, middle and high school content for math. Working on partnerships with others to create content for other subjects. Coming up: Evolver game where kids can create and choose their avitar, monitor your friends’ scores, etc. Instructional material they label as “cheat codes” – glossary of terms as “what is a prime number”, etc. At the end, student/teacher gets a report on how the student did, related to standards. Has a mail function, can send out mail to students. Reports also show how long student played, topics covered during their playtime, etc. Recent article in NY Times regarding use of it. University of Central Florida conducted research in 4 Orange County schools using DimensionM. Saw that score gains more than doubled for test group vs. control groups on district benchmark exams aligned to Florada FCATS. Cost for school is about $20 per student. For a home, single player, 4 part, $69. Next year, multi-player available for purchase by parent. Video games give a “safe environment to fail” (James Paul Gee). Students help each other on their team – fosters collaboration. Provides extended time on task – students come in before and after class, at home, etc. Saw in the focus groups that the girls would sit down two to a computer. The girls would show each other how to play. The guys would sit down solo, used to playing 1st-person. Can download a demo and try in the classroom. League of Scientists – A Casual Game for Science is in the development stage. More of a story-line than the other games. From www.dimensionm.com you can download the game for free to try. MAC users can play against PC users.
