As you might know, a vegan is someone who doesn’t consume animal products like meat, fish, milk, cheese, et cetera. This can also apply to wearing clothes made of animal products like fur or leather. But is it OK to wear wool as a vegan? As wool comes from sheep, this is also an animal product. But there doesn’t seem much harm in wearing wool, because sheep don’t have to be killed to produce this wool. Before we go any further, I want to make clear that what you do is your own choice. I’m not saying what you should do or should not do.

Video by Pink
I just watched a video by singer Pink for PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). I’m not saying all sheep around the world are treated the same way, but this gives an idea of what can happen if you like to buy your wool cheap.

Here is the video. Like Pink, I advice you to have a barf bag nearby.

Alternatives to Wool

You might wonder what the alternatives to wearing wool are. SaveTheSheep.com lists some of them: cotton, cotton flannel, and polyester fleece. You can also find some answers to this question at AnswerBag.com.

“The Overcoming of Self” is a chapter from the book Above Life’s Turmoil by James Allen. You can download the entire book for free when you subscribe to our newsletter (see form on the right).

The Overcoming of Self
Chapter 3 from “Above Life’s Turmoil” by James Allen (1910)

Many people have very confused and erroneous ideas concerning the terms “the overcoming of self”, “the eradication of desire”, and “the annihilation of the personality.” Some (particularly the intellectual who are prone to theories) regard it as a metaphysical theory altogether apart from life and conduct; while others conclude that it is the crushing out of all life, energy and action, and the attempt to idealise stagnation and death. These errors and confusions, arising as they do in the minds of individuals, can only be removed by the individuals themselves; but perhaps it may make their removal a little less difficult (for those who are seeking Truth) by presenting the matter in another way.

The doctrine of the overcoming or annihilation of self is simplicity itself; indeed, so simple, practical, and close at hand is it that a child of five, whose mind has not yet become clouded with theories, theological schemes and speculative philosophies, would be far more likely to comprehend it than many older people who have lost their hold upon simple and beautiful truths by the adoption of complicated theories.

The annihilation of self consists in weeding out and destroying all those elements in the soul which lead to division, strife, suffering, disease and sorrow. It does not mean the destruction of any good and beautiful and peace-producing quality. For instance, when a man is tempted to irritability or anger, and by a great effort overcomes the selfish tendency, casts it from him, and acts from the spirit of patience and love, in that moment of self-conquest he practises the annihilation of self. Every noble man practises it in part, though he may deny it in his words, and he who carries out this practice to its completion, eradicating every selfish tendency until only the divinely beautiful qualities remain, he is said to have annihilated the personality (all the personal elements) and to have arrived at Truth. The self which is to be annihilated is composed of the following ten worthless and sorrow-producing elements:

Lust

Hatred

Avarice

Self-indulgence

Self-seeking

Vanity

Pride

Doubt

Dark belief

Delusion

It is the total abandonment, the complete annihilation of these ten elements, for they comprise the body of desire. On the other hand it teaches the cultivation, practice, and preservation of the following ten divine qualities:

Purity

Patience

Humility

Self-sacrifice

Self-reliance

Fearlessness

Knowledge

Wisdom

Compassion

Love

These comprise the Body of Truth, and to live entirely in them is to be a doer and knower of the Truth, is to be an embodiment of Truth. The combination of the ten elements is called Self or the Personality; the combination of the ten qualities produces what is called Truth; the Impersonal; the abiding, real and immortal Man.

It will thus be seen that it is not the destruction of any noble, true, and enduring quality that is taught, but only the destruction of those things that are ignoble, false and evanescent. Neither is this overcoming of self the deprivation of gladness, happiness and joy, but rather is it the constant possession of these things by living in the joy-begetting qualities. It is the abandonment of the lust for enjoyment, but not of enjoyment itself; the destruction of the thirst for pleasure, but not of pleasure itself; the annihilation of the selfish longing for love, and power, and possessions themselves. It is the preservation of all those things which draw and bind men together in unity and concord, and, far from idealising stagnation and death, urges men to the practice of those qualities which lead to the highest, noblest, most effective, and enduring action. He whose actions proceed from some or all of the ten elements wastes his energies upon negations, and does not preserve his soul; but he whose actions proceed from some or all of the ten qualities, he truly and wisely acts and so preserves his soul.

He who lives largely in the ten earthly elements, and who is blind and deaf to the spiritual verities, will find no attraction in the doctrine of self-surrender, for it will appear to him as the complete extinction of his being; but he who is endeavouring to live in the ten heavenly qualities will see the glory and beauty of the doctrine, and will know it as the foundation of Life Eternal. He will also see that when men apprehend and practise it, industry, commerce, government, and every worldly activity will be purified; and action, purpose and intelligence, instead of being destroyed, will be intensified and enlarged, but freed from strife and pain.

You can download the entire book for free when you subscribe to our newsletter (see form on the right).

True Happiness
Chapter 1 from “Above Life’s Turmoil” by James Allen (1910)

To maintain an unchangeable sweetness of disposition, to think only thoughts that are pure and gentle, and to be happy under all circumstances,- such blessed conditions and such beauty of character and life should be the aim of all, and particularly so of those who wish to lessen the misery of the world. If anyone has failed to lift himself above ungentleness, impurity, and unhappiness, he is greatly deluded if he imagines he can make the world happier by the propagation of any theory or theology. He who is daily living in harshness, impurity, or unhappiness is day by day adding to the sum of the world’s misery; whereas he who continually lives in goodwill, and does not depart from happiness, is day by day increasing the sum of the world’s happiness, and this independently of any religious beliefs which these may or may not hold.

He who has not learned how to be gentle, or giving, loving and happy, has learned very little, great though his book-learning and profound his acquaintance which the letter of Scripture may be, for it is in the process of becoming gentle, pure, and happy that the deep, real and enduring lessons of life are learned. Unbroken sweetness of conduct in the face of all outward antagonism is the infallible indication of a self-conquered soul, the witness of wisdom, and the proof of the possession of Truth.

A sweet and happy soul is the ripened fruit of experience and wisdom, and it sheds abroad the invisible yet powerful aroma of its influence, gladdening the hearts of others, and purifying the world. And all who will, and who have not yet commenced, may begin this day, if they will so resolve, to live sweetly and happily, as becomes the dignity of a true manhood or womanhood. Do not say that your surroundings are against you. A man’s surroundings are never against him; they are there to aid him, and all those outward occurrences over which you lose sweetness and peace of mind are the very conditions necessary to your development, and it is only by meeting and overcoming them that you can learn, and grow, and ripen. The fault is in yourself.

Pure happiness is the rightful and healthy condition of the soul, and all may possess it if they will live purely and unselfish.

“Have goodwill
To all that lives, letting unkindness die,
And greed and wrath, so that your lives be made
Like soft airs passing by.”

Is this too difficult for you? Then unrest and unhappiness will continue to dwell with you. Your belief and aspiration and resolve are all that are necessary to make it easy, to render it in the near future a thing accomplished, a blessed state realised.

Despondency, irritability, anxiety and complaining, condemning and grumbling all these are thought-cankers, mind-diseases; they are the indications of a wrong mental condition, and those who suffer therefrom would do well to remedy their thinking and conduct. It is true there is much sin and misery in the world, so that all our love and compassion are needed, but our misery is not needed- there is already too much of that. No, it is our cheerfulness and happiness that are needed for there is too little of that. We can give nothing better to the world than beauty of life and character; without this, all other things are vain; this is pre-eminently excellent; it is enduring, real, and not to be overthrown, and it includes all joy and blessedness.

Cease to dwell pessimistically upon the wrongs around you; dwell no more in complaints about, and revolt against, the evil in others, and commence to live free from all wrong and evil yourself. Peace of mind, pure religion, and true reform lie this way. If you would have others true, be true; if you would have the world emancipated from misery and sin, emancipate yourself; if you would have your home and your surroundings happy, be happy. You can transform everything around you if you will transform yourself.

“Don’t bewail and bemoan..
Don’t waste yourself in rejection, nor bark against the bad,
but chant the beauties of the good.”

And this you will naturally and spontaneously do as you realise the good in yourself.

Most people think that being creative is something you are born with. Although to some people it can come more easily, creativity is something you can develop. Here are 7 ways to become more creative.

1. Think Like A Child
As adults we tend to think in a conditioned way aimed at showing how clever we are. Yet, as children, we were simply spontaneous and far more creative in our thinking. To re-capture your childhood curiosity, allow yourself to just wonder at things, to be completely present in the here and now, and to detach yourself from what you thought was real.

2. Make New Connections
To be innovative does not require a university degree; it simply requires making a connection between existing ideas. For instance, did you know that ice cream was invented in 2000 BC yet it took another 3900 years for someone to come up with the idea of a cone? It is when you take two seemingly unrelated items and use the spark of creativity that genius happens.

3. Be A Little Illogical
It is a peculiarly Western trait to want to tie things up in neat bundles. We prefer solutions to problems, and answers to questions. To be creative, you need to be comfortable with things that don’t fit. The Eastern tradition is more in tune with incongruence. As in this Zen koan, or problem: what is the sound of one hand clapping?

4. Laugh More
Tom Peters says that the creativity of a workplace can be measured by a laughometer, ie how much it laughs. Humor is one of the greatest creative devices. It gets us out of our normal patterns and puts ideas together that shouldn’t go together. It has been found that after listening to comedy tapes, the ability of students ability to solve problems rises by 60%.

5. Think Outside Your Limits
Many of the products we take for granted today are the result of people thinking outside their limits. A good example of this is science fiction. Science fiction writers came up with things like sliding doors before we all took it for granted.

6. Adopt and Adapt
To be creative doesn’t require blue-sky thinking. You can still be creative by adapting what works elsewhere. An American airline that wanted quicker turnarounds on their flights adopted the techniques of Formula One pit crews. Another source of ideas is nature. Georges de Mestral adapted the way certain seeds stick to clothing and invented Velcro.

7. Remember Your Dreams
Dreaming and day-dreaming can create a rich stream of ideas, because that’s when we relax and let the subconscious mind work by itself. Most flashes of inspiration come when we are walking the dog, taking a shower, or cleaning around the house. A great book related to this subject is The Einstein Factor by Win Wenger.

Apply these 7 creative thinking techniques and make them part of your daily thinking. New solutions to your problems will open up to you with ease and speed.

Stress is fast becoming the biggest health problem in modern societies. Financial pressures, work pressures, family pressures – so much to do so little time to do it all! Here are five quick ways to ease the pressure and relieve stress.

1 – Relax for One Hour Every Day

Make time to switch off from the daily trials and tribulations and relax for at least one hour every day. Just shut the world out and do something you enjoy. Reading, playing a musical instrument, taking a relaxing bath with music and candles (and maybe a glass of wine) are all great ways to unwind and will be extremely beneficial to your mental health. If you know Reiki or Quantum Touch, try to move energy through your whole body. You can also try a meditation I described in the article on How to Meditate – Use Your Imagination.

2 – Get Some Distance from Your Problems

If you’re dealing with a stressful situation and you have a lot on your plate then it can be very hard to find solutions. You’re caught up in the midst of a sandstorm and it is very difficult to see the way out. A good idea is to get some distance from your problems so you can gather your thoughts. If possible, take a day or even a weekend away from your usual surroundings, somewhere peaceful, and relax. Take a journal along so you can jot down any ideas. Distance away from problems can bring clarity and by relaxing, you’ll be calmer and solutions will come far easier than when you’re in the heat of battle. You can also use EFT in these situations. Read more about this in my article on How to Get Started with EFT.

3 – Reacting to Change

One of the reasons people become stressed is because they are facing a change or even a number of changes to their lives. Change is a constant in life and refusing to accept change can cause stress levels to soar. When you are faced with a change, try to find the positives associated with change and embrace change instead of resisting it. Every change presents an opportunity for you to grow and there are always positives to find in even the most trying of circumstances. Change doesn’t bring stress, it’s all about how you react to change and if you react in a negative way, you will do yourself no end of harm.

4 – Schedule a “Blitz Day”

There always seems to be an endless list of jobs that need doing: repairs around the house, paperwork, car maintenance, throwing out junk, washing and ironing your clothes, weeding the garden – on and on and on! The more you put them off, the more the list grows and the more they contribute to your stress levels. So make a list of all of these chores and then schedule something I call a “Blitz Day”. On this day, you will rise early and spend the whole day sorting out each of these jobs. Take few breaks and only have a quick bite at lunchtime and just blitz through these irritating but necessary tasks. This will get rid of them, you’ll lower the stress they cause but more importantly, you’ll realize just how effective and industrious you can be when you apply the full force of your will to accomplish things.

5 – Treat Yourself to a Stress-Free Day

This is a day where you escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday living and enjoy some stress-free time. You’ll also feel great and give your well being a huge boost. On this day, have a light workout, a swim, a sauna, a Jacuzzi, a steam room. A massage would be nice and if you have access to one, a Turkish baths will give you an invigorating experience. Try to do this at least once a month, it is an excellent stress-buster.

The 5 tips here will help you to significantly reduce your stress levels but they’ll only work for you if you put them into action. Give them a go – you’ll be amazed at the results!

Share your own ideas on quick stress busters in the comments below.

If you are anything like me, you probably have bought a lot of products from all kinds of internet marketing gurus promising you easy money with little to no work. Most of this is sales hype and if those products contain good advice it is not always easy to follow through. Because just when you begin to start implementing that advice, some new product will come along and you give that product your full attention.

Unsubscribe
The first thing you want to do is to unsubscribe from all internet marketing newsletters. Those will only make you lose your focus. You probably know enough already to succeed online. And if that is not the case, read further below.

Confessions of a Lazy Super-Affiliate
I have studied internet marketing for a couple of years now and there is a lot of hype in this business. It can be hard to find a product that gives great advice, is enjoyable to read and inspires you to take action and follow through. A few weeks ago I read Confessions of a Lazy Super-Affiliate by Chris Rempel. I was so impressed with this book that I also bought all of his other books. My absolute favorite is about something called the Conduit Method. I read about this method on the Warrior Forum (an internet marketing forum) and this thread is one of the most popular threads ever. His books are simple but very effective. No hype, just simple techniques that you can repeat over and over again. Internet marketing does not have to be hard, but it takes time. Most of the work consists of finding out what already works and doing that same thing over and over again. A lot of people think that it can’t be that simple, so they complicate things and eventually lose interest when the results do not come right away.

Start Now
If you want to be successful with affiliate marketing, I suggest you invest a small amount of your money by buying the following books:
- Confessions of a Lazy Super-Affiliate – This book will give you the foundation to finally be successful with affiliate marketing.
- VIP Confessions #1 – The ‘Conduit’ Method – My favorite method for making money with affiliate marketing.
- VIP Confessions #2 – The ‘Reverse Selection’ Blueprint – Do not try to be inventive when you are just starting out. Find out what already works online and then do the same. If you combine the advice given in this book with the first two books you are miles ahead of the competition.
- VIP Essentials #1 – Site Layouts That SELL – With this package you have no more excuses to start. Now you have everything available to start in affiliate marketing and achieving success.

Work on the advice given in those books and work on nothing else for the following months. Follow through and don’t get sidetracked by the next big internet marketing product launch. That will only make you lose focus and not follow through.

Mindset
Because achieving success is also about mindset, I suggest you also (re)read my article about Making Money Online and EFT. This article discusses some of the blocks you may encounter on your way to success and how you can eliminate those blocks.

And before you start you might want the watch the Tony Robbins video again as he inspires you to take massive action and follow through.

The combination of good advice on affiliate marketing and the right mindset is the perfect formula for online success.

To your success,
Gerber

In the next few weeks I will post a series of articles on the subject of conversational hypnosis. The previous article was about Derren Brown and Conversational Hypnosis. Now you can learn more about what conversational hypnosis is and how you can use it.

Misconceptions about Hypnosis
You have probably seen or heard stories of people making a fool of themselves on stage after someone hypnotized them. They seem to be completely under the control of the stage hypnotist. This can be scary to some. What if someone has the power to completely control or dominate other people? This huge misconception of power has been created by films, the media, books and articles, but fortunately this kind of power is not possible.

In hypnosis you are negotiating with someone’s subconscious mind. And the subconscious mind is the place where people’s ethics and moral code is stored. A stage hypnotist’s job is to create the illusion of control, but the volunteers on the show never do anything conflicting with their moral code.

What is Hypnosis?
Normal everyday hypnosis is happening all around you. Have you ever driven in your car and all of a sudden you wonder what happened the last fifteen minutes or so? You know you were driving your car, because you are not in the same place where you were fifteen minutes ago. But you can’t recall the journey. This is an example of your subconscious mind taking over, making your life easier. You could say that you have entered an hypnotic trance. Another example of everyday hypnosis is when you are reading a book and you are so involved in the story that you forget about everything else and just don’t pick up signals from the world outside anymore.

There are different kinds of hypnosis – self-hypnosis, stage hypnosis and there is also Ericksonian hypnosis. The last one is also known as covert hypnosis or conversational hypnosis. With conversational hypnosis you can hypnotize and manipulate people just by talking to them. They don’t even realize that they are being hypnotized.

How Does Conversational Hypnosis Work?
First you need to know about one of the basic rules you hear quite often in the personal development field. Before something manifests itself in the real world, you first thought about it in your inner world (your mind). That means that if you want to help someone change their behavior, you should help them change their inner world first. Eventually that will influence the way that behavior manifests itself in the outer world (the real world).

Most people have a guard around their inner world that protects their beliefs and how they think and feel about certain things. Normally you can’t simply walk up to someone and tell them to change their behavior and their beliefs. A lot of people will become defensive and come up with all kinds of reasons about why you are wrong and they are right. You need a more subtle approach for this. This is where conversational hypnosis comes in. Conversational hypnosis is all about planting seeds of action in someone’s inner world. By carefully influencing how someone views his or her inner world, you begin to influence how someone thinks or feels about certain things and how they will act on this.

The 4 Steps to Hypnotizing Someone
There are four steps to hypnotizing someone using conversational hypnosis.

Absorb attention. You want to make sure that you have the attention of the other person, so that they are not distracted by other signals and their own thoughts.

Bypass the critical factor. If you have ever given someone good advice, you know the kind of responses you can get. Good advice that would actually have helped them, gets discarded with remarks like “No, this isn’t possible” or “Oh, I thought of that already. That won’t work“. Their ‘critical factor’ is getting in the way. Once you bypass this critical factor, then you can present your advice.

Activate an unconscious response. Any response will do. An example is an emotional response. You don’t choose to have an emotional response to something – it just happens at an unconscious level and they are the results of your subconscious mind responding to the suggestions that you present to yourself.

Lead the unconscious to desired outcome. And this is where you lead those unconscious responses to the outcome you are looking for.

There are several ways to absorb someone’s attention and there are numerous ways to bypass the critical factor. I will go into those in the next articles. If you can’t wait, you can check out this great course called The Power of Conversational Hypnosis. I’ve been reading and listening to the material the last few weeks and simply can’t put it away. I’ve already noticed the difference in my conversations with other people. The course contains great exercises to learn this material quickly, but just by reading the material or listening to the audio files you pick up some of these techniques and work with it on an unconscious level.

Have fun and see you at the next article in the series!

Conversational Hypnosis
Much of what we know about conversational hypnosis is based upon the works of one man – Milton Erickson. He was one of the great influences for Richard Bandler and John Grinder when they started with NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming). He basically used language as a tool to reach people on a subconscious level. Most people will reject certain advice on how to change straight away. But if you for instance embed a suggestion in a story you are telling, this suggestion will embed itself into the other person’s mind like a seed in fertile ground. I will go into this subject in more detail in another post. First I want to show you some entertaining examples on how people can be influenced with subtle suggestions.

Derren Brown
I’m a big fan of Derren Brown and have seen most of his tv shows. What intrigues me the most is how he gets people to do what he wants them to do. Conversational hypnosis does play a role here, but it isn’t the only tool he uses. He uses, as he says so himself, a mix of magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship.

Here are a couple of videos where Derren uses suggestion to influence how the other people react. Apparently it isn’t allowed anymore to embed these videos into this blog post, but here are the links so you can still watch them.

If you want to learn more about conversational hypnosis, check out the The Power of Conversational Hypnosis. It might not be cheap, but it’s highly recommended.

Have fun with the Derren Brown videos and take a look at The Power of Conversational Hypnosis. There is no risk in buying this as there is a 60 day guarantee. You can always ask for a refund if you feel the material is not worth your money.

I’ve just watched a video where Tony Robbins, John Reese and Frank Kern discuss the reason why people don’t follow through on things. This is a truly motivational video.

As you might know I’m a big fan of Tony Robbins. I’ve been to several of his seminars and listened to a bunch of his personal development programs (Personal Power, Get the Edge). His material has helped to improve my everyday life tremendously. It has among other things inspired me to start EverydayImprovement.com.

Another field of interest for me is Internet Marketing. This market is filled with self-proclaimed experts on this topic and it’s very hard to distinguish who to listen to and what to buy. John Reese and Frank Kern are some of the most successful internet marketers. They walk their talk and have shown again and again why they are so successful and how you can become successful as well. But they also noticed that most people who buy their products aren’t achieving the amount of success they could have. Why is that? Well, most people don’t follow through and take (as Tony Robbins would put it) ‘massive action’.

John and Frank decided to ask the ‘guru’ in the field of success this question. Why don’t people follow through on things? I took several pages of notes when watching the video, so be prepared to have pen and paper ready.

Here are some of the things I wrote down (their ideas and my own thoughts):

Most people are excited by progress. Buying a product that could help them feels like progress. And then they buy another product, because that feels like progress too. Eventually you will have to open that box and take action for results to happen. Buying the product is not enough.

Most people are not in a must-situation. If you want to master something (internet marketing or anything else) it has to be a ‘must’ for you.

Find out why it is a must for you. What is it that won’t give up on?

If you know for certain that something will work, you will follow through.

The cycle of potential, action, results and belief. If you believe that there is very little potential, then you usually don’t take massive focused action and you don’t get the results. You have to be certain that you are going to succeed. You can accomplish this by conditioning your mind for success. Visualizing is one way to do this. Visualize the results you want in your head. Then take massive action. The results you will get in real life will strengthen the belief you have that you will succeed. And from then on you can repeat the process with perhaps even greater goals.

Don’t lower your expectations. Don’t be afraid of disappointment. Just follow the steps above and success is inevitable. Of course you will face some setbacks on the way, but that will only make you stronger. It takes no guts to be skeptical. Be bold and face the challenge.

Enjoy!
