HAMLET 50/50
By William Shakespeare
Adaptation by Vanessa Morosco and Peter Simon Hilton
Directed by Vanessa Morosco

The Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival Professional Company returns in summer 2023 with Hamlet 50/50, a world premiere adaptation of one of Shakespeare's greatest tales. This unique new production model is designed to create a more balanced and equal company of cast and crew members alike. Hamlet 50/50 performs in the Patricia George Decio Theatre in the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center from August 17-27, 2023.

One of Shakespeare’s most iconic tales, this powerful tale of a Danish prince torn apart by forces both natural and supernatural continues to resonate with audiences worldwide. Intense, gripping, and ultimately extraordinarily moving, Hamlet 50/50 is a compelling examination of a spirit in crisis.

You have the option for the Fall of 2023 to audition either remotely or in person. There will be no preference given regarding admission to whichever audition method you choose.
The ND Symphony Orchestra welcomes auditions for members of all sections at any time during the school year, but most auditions and admissions to the ensemble take place at the beginning of each academic year. You have the option for the Fall of 2023 to audition either remotely or in person. There will be no preference given regarding admission to whichever audition method you choose. For both, prepare a short solo (c. 5 minutes in length) with which you feel comfortable, and that you feel best demonstrates your level. Please do not record your audition with accompaniment, even if your piece has one.

Starting off our colloquium series, professor Carolina Sartorio from Rutgers University, will be here on Friday, September 8, to give her talk at 3:00pm. Location TBD.

Talk Title: From Responsibility to Causation: The Intransitivity of Causation as a Case Study.

Abstract: Can we infer claims about causation from claims about moral responsibility? On the face of it, this would seem to get things backwards, for we typically proceed in the opposite way: we establish, first, that agents causally contributed to certain outcomes, together with the fact that they met some other conditions that are required for responsibility, and we conclude that those agents are morally responsible for the outcomes. However, in this paper I argue that there are special conditions under which inferences from responsibility to causation are warranted. My argument focuses on the debate over the transitivity of causation. I argue that we can learn that causation is not transitive by focusing on claims about responsibility (plus claims about the connection between responsibility and causation). This is because, in the scenarios I focus on, the judgments about responsibility (and about the connection between responsibility and causation) are more entrenched than the relevant causal claims. Thus, we can learn about the causal concept that underlies our concept of responsibility by thinking about what those responsibility judgments entail about causation.
