Geek parties have become so popular with in the last few years. Maybe it has something to do with the sudden increase in thick rimmed glasses? Either way from high school parties to real geeks celebrating their geekness success. This is theme I can really get behind. The costumes are easy and cheap for both boys and girls. There are so many fun things you can do with a geek party, here are a few ideas of mine:

1. using beakers instead of glasses for the drinks

2. Silly Ice Cubes

3.Games - geeks love games , i personally reccomend a pub quiz since its a good ice breaker and it keeps the flow of party going

My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding

Growing up in America the only thing I've heard about gypsy's pretty much stems from Esmeralda from the Hunch Back of Notre Dame. Going to Europe changed that. I became interested in the traveler life style when I caught a TV show about their weddings. Its Jersey Shore meets My Sweet 16, but with 16 year olds having weddings instead of birthdays.

Gypsies are very concerned with maintain not only their lifestyle, but tradition. So I researched a few gypsy traditions, however I believe it is very different for people based on region. In the east the physical church part of the wedding was not necessarily important except in one case where I read that a ceremony is held and the couple insert a drop of their blood into bread and eat the others piece. Unlike in England and Ireland where the communities are very focused around the church. I’m not gypsy so I don’t know what’s true, but the two I saw the most were:

1. The grooms parents are expected to pay for the bride. This is to help the family with the loss of a daughter and insure that she will be treated right.

2. After the agreement has been made, a ceremony called a pliashka or plotchka, is held. As s symbol of this joyous celebration a bottle of wine or brandy wrapped in a brightly colored silk handkerchief, brought to the ceremony by the young man's father. A necklace of gold coins is traditionally attached to the bottle. The father of the groom-to-be takes the necklace of coins and puts it around the future brides neck, and warmly embraces his future daughter-in-law, or bori. The necklace makes it clear to all that the girl is now engaged and not available as a bride to any other man. The father of the groom-to-be drinks from the bottle and passes it around to the guests. When the bottle is emptied, it is refilled with wine or brandy for use at the wedding celebration.

There are a lot of opinions about gypsies, but no matter what anyone says you have to admit they can throw a massive glittery spectacle. Check out this tv show and see the fabulousness come to life for yourself

The Power of Twitter

At first I refused to think that twitter could ever be cool. Then unable to understand how Ashton Kutcher was one of the worlds most influential people I decided to go to the dark side. I had to find out more about this phenomenon. So, a few months in and I really am hooked. It’s a great way to learn about anything and everything. Now, tying it back to events. I have added some of the big time event planners out there and event venues ext. Its really quite fun. I get to see what their inspiration is, what their up to, and sometimes even some pics of the event. I have also found out about other websites and all things related to events. Room Setups and Formulas

The flow a room should be something that comes naturally to event planners. It’s something so trivial a guest should never even have a second thought about it. The type of event will allow you to figure out the room setup you would like. Some types of popular room setups are:

Important tips:

2 people per 6ft table (to be comfortable)

Cozy is nice, being smooched between two people isn’t. You want your event to feel full and roomy and with a few simple formulas it is very obtainable.

Room Size Formulas

(recommended to go with higher number )

Reception (9-10 square feet)

Theater (11-13 square feet)

Classroom (17-22 square feet)

Banquet (12.5-13.5 square feet)

10 *10 booths (200 square feet per person)

So if you know how many people and the style of the room setup you would:

-Example: 500 people for a Banquet style room

500 *13.5 = 6,500 square feet room needed

Know the size on the room and the style:

Length*width (of the room)/ the room size formula of your room setup = number of people

-Example: L=50 W=30 sized room, with a reception room setup

50*30= 1500 1500/10=150 people

What major should I pick to become an event planner?

Event planning has so many faces it can be confusing to pick a major. It helps to start off thinking about what kind of events you’re interested in. Behind every event from a birthday party to a trade show there is a coordinator behind it. So that’s really important to think about. You can ask your school advisors, but anyone who’s in college knows that most of the time you can get better answers from a brick wall (ha, ha, ha).

The two main events planning majors are:

· Business and Hospitality

o with an emphasis in event coordination (if possible at your school)

· Recreation & Leisure

I have heard from pretty much every artsy major you can become a event planner from it. However, I personally think that some of those people underestimate the aspects of event planning. Some random bridging majors that go into event planning are public relations, theater, interior design, and others I am sure. Realistically the only real way to become an event planner though is to start from the bottom. Event planning is something you just get good at from experience; of course a good eye helps ;) aka it’s all about putting in the hours.

Joe Cariati wedding arrangments

One of the best things about events is that no matter the events rhyme or reason they all have some sort of floral assortment. I am absolutely obsessed with good arrangements. They take a room to a whole new environment; it’s insane what a difference it makes. I was perusing facebook when I noticed you could become a fan, of this great glass blower, Joe Cariati. He is an LA local and a San Francisco State Alumni (woot woot!) His pieces are amazing. Relating back to events, he just posted some great pictures on his blog and facebook of his wedding arrangements. The pieces alone make a beautiful statement and with the cactus/ terrariums mix interior it makes a great fresh look. Of course the arrangement could be used for any event. They give me a reminiscent feeling of Arizona. Wedding wise I picture these being perfect for a sweet couple who loves hiking and yet at the same time has a sophisticated vibe.

A table cloth is a main piece to setting the scene. However we all don’t have every color just lying around. So if you’re looking for a good deal try this website I found http://www.tableclothsforless.com . Cheesy as it sounds I was able to get some great pieces for affordable prices. I swear this isn’t an advertisement or anything just a good find I wanted to share. I think they also have napkins and chair cover too.

12 Days of Cookies

Its Christmas time and although traditions are running ramped its important to mix it up. As a bakeaholic I take my Christmas excursion through my sweet tooth. Food Network has this great email list called the 12 days of cookies, and it is absolutely fabulous. Every day for the next 12 days (starting on December 1^st) you will get a new cookie recipe via email. Sometimes the cookies aren’t my favorite but for every 12 I seem to find 11 that I like ;) these are great to break out on Christmas Eve where you will impress not only the family, but Santa. Hope you can have as much fun with this as I do!
