Way, way back in the 70’s I was at school in Australia. My best friend then is still my very best friend today. We used to laugh so much about our PE teacher, Mrs Scully, and I realised that we still do but now it is with great fondness. She was all the best bits of Miss Jean Brodie, none of the worst. She taught us that “horses sweat, men perspire but ladies GLOW”. She had us dancing and batton twirling but we really knew that she was truly crazy when she was teaching us facial exercises. Yes, it’s true. We had whole lessons devoted to the facial workout way back in 1979!

I’m not laughing anymore, I’m weeping at every lovely but expensive and avoidable CACI session I’ve paid for. Now I’ve started to do the Eva Fraser facial workout program just wishing I’d listened all those years ago, but grateful to have another chance. Mrs Scully, 1970’s PE teacher of Nagle Girls High School NSW, I’m sorry I didn’t appreciate you. You are terrific!

I truly do not understand how women manage to stay upright in heels. To me, they are a triumph of art over practicality, of height over happiness.

It looks hard enough on a flat surface. However, today’s fancy parties, with their outdoor venues and uneven surfaces are an added challenge.

More than once I have watched as an apparently drunk lady has stumbled past walking like she’s on the tail end of a 3 day bender, only to find she is actually a sober, articulate person strapped to a pair of impossibly high heels, trying to negotiate across a muddy field.

Outdoor venue season is here. Our girls would usually be hoping we’ll hold them up but not this year. Produce a pack of Heel Candy and give your lady a mini platform to help her stay upright and look sober. Unless of course, she really IS drunk. Then you’re on your own.

The team have really pulled out the stops to conquer the shoe and clothing care mission. There is much calling for samples and testing going on. The first success was presented to me as a definate treat, a real peice of candy.

I have been introduced to Heel Candy. Little stoppers to slip onto your heels and “stop that sinking feeling” particularly suitable for a summer filled with outdoor events. I confess I haven’t tried them outdoors yet, I’m still waiting for summer, but I have tried them indoors. My most gorgeous friend N, lives in a truly beautiful home with exquisite original wooden floors. I was delighted to be able to visit her in my most loved stiletto’s and be able to keep my shoes on. There was no damage to said floors and as an added bonus, no footstep noise.

Watch out for these, we’ve ordered them in from Australia so we have a few days to wait. It’s another UK first for you, from us, at Everything Under The Dress. We’re sure you’ll love them!

With the Spring nearly upon us, it’s time to get those hands and feet ready to shine!

You’re watching and planning the new seasons treats, you’ve got the timeless accessories and the make-up that takes you from frumpy to foxy in a matter of minutes.
But have you forgotten something?

Yes, the feet you squeeze into stilettos and the hands that help you out are in serious need of a little TLC.
And that’s where Barielle comes in.

Launched in the States more than 30 years ago, this cosmetic company know a thing of two about making hands, nails and feet ready for action and they’ve got a whole load of celebrity fans to prove it, including Pink, J-Lo and Sandra Bullock.

But you don’t need to have an entourage to make Barielle work for you.

To feel five-star, all you need are these products: Nail Strengthening Cream; Professional Protective Hand Cream; Fortifying Nail Builder; Instant Nail Hardener and the Rejuvenating Foot Treatment.

Let’s start with the Nail Strengthening Cream – originally created to condition the hooves of ‘million-dollar’ racehorses, this thick but easily absorbed cream is the most-iconic product in the Barielle stable. With a smell that’s heavenly not horsey, this concoction can be applied to the nail bed and cuticles twice a day to prevent splits and keep nails healthy and strong. It feels luxurious too so you might want to take a minute or ten to enjoy the sensation – or get a willing assistant to apply it for you!

For an extra boost of moisture, apply the Professional Protective Hand Cream – this subtly fragranced cream protects against the winter chill and can be used after hand washing which can strip the hands of essential oils. It’s available in a large tube, but a little goes a long way so why not decant a small amount into a pretty pot and it won’t look out of place in your party handbag. After just a few days of using it, my hands felt much more supple and you’re sure to notice the change too.
Of course, hands are one thing but it’s your nails that can really make or break (not literally we hope) your look so the Fortifying Nail Builder containing calcium will take your nails from brittle to brilliant. And short of smothering your nails in milk, it’s the best way to get an instant calcium boost – making your nails much stronger. It can also help to eliminate those white spots that sometimes appear when you’re running low on this essential vitamin. It has a glossy sheen so can double up as clear nail polish or be used as a base coat if you’re thinking of wearing a more daring shade on top!
Hands up if your nails are constantly breaking –it’s a common problem but the remedy couldn’t be simpler. The Instant Nail Hardener is a miracle in a bottle, treat yourself! After just one application, my nails felt harder and considering what we put our hands through each day, that’s no mean feat.

Talking of feet, don’t let your tootsies take a back seat in the glamour stakes – get them sling back or sandal ready with the Rejuvenating Foot Treatment. With a fresh and herby aroma, it’s easy to apply and soaks into the skin within seconds. It’s best to apply it morning and night, especially after showering when skin can become dry and if you’d like to lock-in more moisture just slip on a pair of cotton socks after applying before bedtime and you’ll wake up to silky soles and fabulous feet.

So with rings on your fingers and bells on your toes, you’re ready to shine wherever you go. And only you need to know your beauty secret.

Unless you decide to share it. After all, the best secrets are much better when shared.

My dear friend D said the magical and fateful words “your laundry is soooo white!” and hey, abracadabra, within 24hrs I’d had my first laundry disaster for years. Somehow, by some mystery force, my little laundry bag holding a selection of my favourite white lingerie, found it’s way into the machine with school uniforms and grubby games kit and a pair of jeans.

A quick and unsuccessful dash round town for the solution lead to laments, beating of breast and a new mission for our team. The mission, which they have graciously accepted, despite lack of glamour and excitement, is to significantly improve our range of fashion fix it, shoe and clothing care products. The mission is on, keep an eye on that category. But don’t hold your breathe, there is a lot of very serious lingerie shopping done first!

You can have the best shoes this side of Harvey Nics, maxxed out your credit card on a handbag sent straight from heaven and had every hair on your hair personally snipped, coloured and coiffed into perfection but if you don’t have the secret weapons to add the Va Voom into your killer frock, you may as well stay home.

Before dishing out precious words of advice on all the things you really need to wear on the inside, where it counts, please also know that if you intend dragging your hearts desire home after a few cocktails and a whirl around the dance floor you must have an appropriate stash of “ something more comfortable to slip into” ready to be used when you get home. Playful Promises’ Zodiac Panties or Hanro of Switzerland’s Satin Babydoll Nightdress are both classic fall back positions. Forewarned is forearmed after all.

Many women look great in halter neck dresses. But if you’re one who has less than pert little puppies, then you can rest assured that Liftits will be your saviour. These are unlike other stick on bra cups, in that they support from above the breast, rather than below. Strange but true. Their triangular shape makes them perfect for halter dresses. They are adjustable for cup sizes from Itty Bitty to Yeah Mama and even if you are very full in the bust, they will still support you. You could use two sets if you are very heavy in the bust and a little paranoid, a tried and true manoeuvre that really works.

Strapless dresses are so lovely and classic, but can leave you as flat chested as Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday because the bodice is usually quite firm against the body to ensure the dress stays up. Boostits, which come in full cup and half cup too, will resolve this straight away. Pop them into your strapless bra or bustier and get back the bust you just lost, or even a little more if you prefer.

Dresses with very low backs can be quite perilous because those of us that need a bra, can’t. Don’t despair. We have the Supportits stick on bra coming to your rescue. These stick on cups allow you to have breast support and a bare back as well. If you are blessed with gorgeous locks to swish around in your low back dress, then why not forgo the normal perfume and use Paul Yacomine’s Parfum de Coiffeur instead. These fragrances which are thirty per cent essential oils are sprayed into your tresses, providing a glossy sheen to the hair and a very sexy way to make your mark without being overpowering.

Tapeits are the one product no woman can be without. Whether you use them for making sure that straps stay in place, or for keeping your neckline respectable, they are long lasting and very reliable. Fiddly bows and ties that are determined to fall the wrong way can also be remedied with Tapeits. If you are determined to wear a seriously low plunge, rely on these little sticky wonders to keep everything in place. Just be sure to clear away excess moisturizer before you apply them. If you are wearing a bra under your frock, then use the Tapeits between the bra and the frock, rather than frock and skin in order to get the best result.

Jerseys and satins are very slinky and body revealing, and that’s why they are favoured by eveningwear designers the world over. But to ensure that the only peanuts on display are the ones at the bar, use Concealits silicone nipple covers. A smooth finish, even without a bra under the most body hugging fabrics is what Concealits always deliver.

Going further south, and still on the subject of clingy jerseys and satins, please consider the shapewear that will ensure no fleshy outbursts ruin your evening look. Spanx and Trinny & Susannah have some great ones. Going right up to the ribs and down to the knee, Spanx Cognito Shaping Mid-Thigh Body Suit delivers the goods, keeping everything under wraps and providing a great foundation for that slinky number to slip over. Trinny & Susannah Magic Body Smoother is a slip version of this miracle garment, delivering an equally smooth result. Also, if you are wearing a strapless or spaghetti strap dress, try the Plie Slimming Tube / Body Slip which trims and slims the body.

Besides the firm support shapewear provides for all eveningwear, whether satin or something more substantial, there is also the bonus of smaller waist, hip and thigh areas, which can only make your cocktail frock look even better. Our grandmothers had it right when they sang the virtues of foundation wear. Look at the fabulous fashions of Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor and try to imagine the same evening gowns sans shapewear. It was essential back then, but sadly trashed a generation later by the flower children. Finally now, foundation wear is enjoying it’s well earned return to our lingerie drawers, sharing prime position with our advanced technological breakthroughs like Tapeits and other fabulous Fashion First Aid products that are the new essentials.

With these secret weapons in your fashion arsenal, and those gorgeous little vixen pieces ready to slip into later on when the lights are low and the Sultane De Saba Scented Candles are lit, you will be the most fabulous and confident woman that ever wore a party frock.

Never thought to purchase these before but they really do give that extra oomph without letting on that you have had some extra help. Initially felt strange against the skin but got used to them almost immediately and forgot they were there. This is due to the natural feel and look of the silicone. I was worried that they wouldn’t stay in place but they stayed put the entire day. But make sure you follow the instructions on the box and adjust your bra strap after inserting them.

Boostits - half cup - these silicone bra inserts are perfect to wear with your plunge bra due their size and subtlety. The silicone is a lot more comfortable and natural than I thought and boost your cleavage without giving the game away. Very impressed with the almost skin like texture and feel. The flesh like colour is an added reassurance that it won’t show through even under sheer clothing.

Concealits are fantastic!! They are so comfortable to wear and feel like second skin. They are also the most discreet nipple covers I’ve tried, other brands have always shown through but because of the natural skin like tone, smoothness and texture even under sheer material they were virtually invisible to the eye. I have also washed them once and was surprised that this did not reduce the strength of the adhesive. . Would definitely recommend this product - a must have product if you don’t want your nipples making an appearance!!

Liftits - found them quite tricky to put on smoothly. However, I noticed a slight lift (I am a D cup). As Liftits are transparent, they are completely invisible under clothing and you forget you’re wearing them. I did find taking them off a little painful as the adhesive is very strong so I’d recommend a gentle and slow approach!! I’d recommend saving these for a special occasion when you’re unable to wear a bra - I also used these with concealits for added reassurance.

By our very own reviewer, Nazia Fazal

Men,
This Month’s topic is the use of the words “Yes” and “No”, and the use of each when discussing fashion related issues with your partner.

The easy bit is knowing when to use them – if the question is “Does my butt look big in this?”, obviously the answer is “NO!”. If the question is “Do you like this outfit?, the answer, even if she is wearing a Bedouin Tent, is “YES!”.

The difficult bit is the pace at which you use the words.

In all discussions about dress, you need to answer all questions using only the two words above, and you always need to answer at the pace and with the enthusiasm of a rifle shot. There’s no point in saying “No, your butt doesn’t look big in that” if before you answer you look thoughtfully at her butt, scratch your chin, ask for better light, mutter to yourself and use a ruler to confirm.

Practice your pacing with a mate. Here are some questions designed to trip you up:

“Does my butt look big in this?”
“Tell me honestly…do you like this dress/these shoes/my handbag?” (Note - this is a trick question…an honest answer guarantees a week sleeping on the couch…do not fall for it.)
“Do you like what I’ve done with my hair?”

And the absolute killer…”Do you notice anything different about me?”

This is the question that has sunk a million relationships…and there is no correct answer.

If you say yes, then you’ll have to pinpoint the difference. If you answer correctly (”yes, your new haircut looks terrific”) then your day will be roses and champagne. If you fall for the honesty thing (”yes, have you put on a little weight?”) then you are a dead man walking.

A “No” answer can also go both ways - “No, you look as lovely as when you left the house this morning” will satisfy a woman feeling fat and frumpy, but if you miss a new haircut/dress/lip gloss, then you might as well move your things into the doghouse.

So ends the practical lesson. Now, I’m going to offer you a little advice on buying the perfect gift for her at “Everything Under the Dress”. There are some products on the site that will make you popular, and some that will not. Here are some highlights:

Sultane de Saba - these make great gifts. All their products smell good, look good, and offer a nice pampering experience. My advice is to include a home made certificate guaranteeing a quiet time to use them away from nagging kids/partners/parents etc. Soakwash - An interesting, but potentially difficult choice. Granted, they smell good and they look good…they are great products. But the implied responsibility for doing the washing may sink you on this one.

Fashion First Aid - Don’t go near it. If you buy Boostits (I thought you might look good with bigger boobs), you’ll end up with them as the only memory of a perfectly good relationship. Tapeits or Underwhere are better choices, but are a little “SNAG” to be great presents. After all, if you know to buy these products, you’ve either had assistance, or are hankering after a career as a stylist.

Each month, I’ll offer a little more advice to make your present-buying a simple, pleasant and positive experience. But the best advice will never change:

No matter what you buy, deliver it with love, warmth and well shined shoes. If you make her feel like a Princess, you could deliver the Sports section of the daily paper and she’ll still love it.

For more advice, or to share stories of your present-buying, drop me a line… gent@everythingunderthedress.com. The best story each month will receive a beautifully wrapped gift guaranteed to make you popular at home. Or anywhere else for that matter…
