Eureka Springs’ Best Hiking Trails for 2019

With so many hiking trails to choose from, it really can be hard to choose a favorite. But, over the years, there have definitely been some tried and true favorites. These trails offer truly some of the best scenery the Ozark Mountains and the Eureka Spings area has to offer. Pick just one, or try all of them; the choice is yours. Here are our favorite hiking trails for you to try in 2019:

• The Lost Valley Trail can be found in the Buffalo National River area.  The trail is 2.3 miles roundtrip, and features a 53-foot tall waterfall, a natural bridge, and a cave with a 35-foot waterfall inside. The trail is easy to access and an easy hike with benches along the way to rest and soak it all in.
• Also in the Buffalo National River area is the Hemmed-in Hollow Trail.  Hikers choose this trail because of the Hemmed-in Hollow falls, which cascade a stunning 210-feet.  This waterfall is considered the highest waterfall between the Rockies and the Appalachians.  The trail can take as long as 4 to 5 hours to complete due to the rough terrain, so hikers should plan to be on the trail for the entire day.
• The Ozark National Forest is home to the Glory Hole Waterfall Trail.  The hike is mainly downhill to the waterfall and can be tough to hike, as the rocks get slippery.  The waterfall is quite unique, as the water flows through a natural-made hole in the rocks.
• While you’re in the Ozark National Forest, check out the Whitaker Point Trail.  This is a definite must-see trail when visiting Eureka Springs, due to the iconic crag at the end that overlooks Whitaker Creek.  The crag is also known as the Hawksbill Crag Trail.  The trail is 3-miles round trip and there are beautiful waterfalls and wildflowers to be seen along the way.
• At Devil’s Den State Park, the Yellow Rock Trail is a great place to start.  At the end of the 300-foot hike, hikers will discover stunning views of the Lee Creek Valley.  This hike is great for a quick outing in the morning or afternoon, as it is only 3-miles in length.  The trail does get busy on the weekends but still well worth scenic views at the end.

Exploring the Ozark Mountains

There are few things more beautiful or peaceful than riding a motorcycle through the winding roads of the Ozark Mountains, where you’ll have a front row seat to the area’s beautiful scenery.  There are several mapped out cycling routes through the Ozark Mountains, and they are anything but boring. Popular rides near Eureka Springs include the Twisted Lady, Pig Trail Scenic Byway, Moonshine Run, Boston Mountains Scenic Loop, Scenic 71 Loop, and Natural Dam to Boxley Valley. Something for cycling enthusiasts to plan ahead for is the annual Scooting the Ozarks Rally, which will take place this fall, from September 9 – 14, 2019.

Finding great hiking trails is easy in the Ozark Mountains, as they are home to over 1,500 miles of trails.  A great place to get started is in Buffalo National River.  If you’re looking for an easy place to start, check out the short walk of the Koen Interpretive Trail.  Walkers on this trail will see over 34 different types of plants, and there are plenty of benches along the way to take a break.  The Lost Valley Trail is a 3-mile hike with a cave, natural bridge, and waterfall to enjoy along the way.  Of course while visiting the Ozarks, you must also make time for what has been called the most scenic trail in the United States: the Ozark Highlands Trail. This trail has been featured in National Geographic Magazine, The Guardian, and Backpacker Magazine, and it offers 270 miles of some of the most rugged and scenic terrain in the region.

Unique Adventures in the Ozark Mountains

The Ozark Mountains in Arkansas are also known for their caves.  Onyx Cave is located in Eureka Springs, and remains a cool 57 degrees year-round.  It’s a great place to cool off on those hot summer days! Cosmic Caverns in Berryville is home to two bottomless lakes.  There are, of course, plenty of wild caves for those truly adventurous souls to explore, so long as proper safety precautions are taken.

Thrill seekers will also love soaring through the tree tops of the Ozarks at Ozark Mountain Ziplines in Eureka Springs.  They open for the season on March 9, 2019. Participants will soar to heights of over 300 feet in the air, zipping down lines up 2,000 feet long.  It’s an incredible way to see the natural beauty of the Ozark Mountains from an entirely different vantage point.

My wife and I just spent the last 4 days in this WONDERFUL bed and breakfast, and we loved every minute of it! We stayed in the Monet and loved every minute of our visit. The room was immaculate and well kept. The private bath was spacious with a massive shower, and a Jacuzzi tub that my wife absolutely loved. The rest of the inn is also extremely well kept. Breakfast was a highlight of the day every morning. (and the coffee they serve was great too!) Further adding to the experience was the garden, in which at any time of day you could count on a variety of local squirrels, birds, chipmunks, and deer. Doug and Beverly are wonderful hosts and super helpful. Doug has a wealth of knowledge about the area and can provide guests with any number of recommendations, all of which lived up to our expectations. They will also go out of their way to make sure your stay is comfortable. I requested that Doug leave some hot water and a couple of mugs down for us in the evening for tea. When we went down to the kitchen we found not only the water, but a full array of teas, sugars, cream, and hot chocolate. This kind of above and beyond is what sets them apart! The Best Boating Near Eureka Springs

One of the best things about Eureka Springs is that it’s surrounded by lakes and rivers. These waterways are perfect for boating, canoeing, rafting, or kayaking. The painted limestone bluffs banking Beaver Lake & rock shelters of Table Rock Lake are a beautiful sight to behold, and if you’re interested in fishing, both lakes and the rivers are full of striped bass, record trout, and more.

Beaver Lake

70 mile long Beaver Lake is an immensely popular place for picnicking, swimming, hiking, fishing, and boating. It’s the start of the White River, and as such offers premiere fishing. Here, you’ll find small and largemouth bass, striper bass, and plentiful supplies of crappie, bream, white bass, channel and spoonbill catfish. Beyond that, these crystal clear waters are simply just stunning, and a truly wonderful place to spend a relaxing afternoon or two surrounded by the stunning nature the Ozarks are known for. There are commercial marinas on the lake that offer boat rentals.

Table Rock Lake

Table Rock Lake is 52 miles long, and features over 800 miles of shoreline. It’s one of the top bass fishing lakes in the region, as it’s home to largemouth, smallmouth, Kentucky spotted bass and white bass, in addition to crappie, large bluegill, and catfish. Boat rentals are available at Holiday Island Marina if needed. Beyond fishing, Table Rock Lake is an incredibly scenic and relaxing place to spend time, and wildlife is very abundant around these protected shorelines. There are countless coves and deep pockets that make for quiet hideaways, so it’s easy to find your own secluded place to anchor and swim.

Lake Leatherwood

Lake Leatherwood City Park is one of the most popular places to go in Eureka Springs. Here, visitors enjoy 1600 acres of Ozark Mountain countryside, with an 85-acre spring-fed lake at its heart. Visitors can enjoy hiking, picnicking, walking trails, and  a small marina for boating, canoes and paddle boats.

Kings River

The Kings River is one of only 5 north-flowing rivers in the U.S. The area is a wonderful place to visit for hiking, floating, canoeing, and fishing. Kings River is known to have countless rock bass and large channel catfish, but it’s truly earned a solid reputation for its big smallmouth bass.

Buffalo National River

The Buffalo National River, America’s first National River, is one of the few remaining unpolluted, free-flowing rivers in the lower 48 states. The Buffalo National River winds through the area for 150 miles, starting in the Boston Mountains. Following what is likely an ancient riverbed, it is the perfect place for boating. Once you arrive, prepare to journey from running rapids to quiet pools, while surrounded on all sides by massive limestone bluffs and some of the best scenery in the state.

White River

While only 13 miles in length from below Beaver Dam to Beaver Town, the White River flows a total of 722 miles before joining the mighty Mississippi river. In the Eureka Springs area, the river is relatively quiet and gentle, making for a perfect place to relax in the afternoon, and it’s well known for fishing.

Roaring River

If you’re looking to do some trout fishing, there’s no where better than Roaring River State Park. This 3,403-acre state park features the rugged and scenic terrain of the southwest Ozarks, and Roaring River contains one of the premier trout fisheries in the nation, which is stocked nightly.

The Best Waterfalls Near Eureka Springs

The Eureka Springs area has long been a top tourism destination. It’s easy to get here from a variety of places around the country, and there’s an abundance of activities to see and do.  Chasing waterfalls is but one of many fun summer activities you can enjoy while in town this summer. Some are easily accessible, but some are off the beaten path and require a bit of effort.  If you only have time to cover one of these areas, head to the Buffalo National River. It’s about an hour away from Eureka Springs, but will reward you with an incredible variety of waterfalls and scenic trails. Otherwise, here are ten great waterfalls to see in the Ozarks:

1. Black Bass Spillway, a dam that dates to 1894, is one of the oldest dams still standing in the Ozarks. As the headwaters of the West Leatherwood Creek valley tumble over the spillway, it turns into a sparkling cascade. You can drive right up to the falls.
2. Tanyard Creek Falls is a 12 foot tall waterfall found along a very scenic trail in Bella Vista off of Lancashire Blvd. Bella Vista is just a scenic 45 minute drive from Eureka Springs.
3. Hemmed in Hollow on the Buffalo River is the tallest waterfall between the Appalachians and Rockies. This Waterfall is about 220 feet tall, and it is almost always flowing. The easiest way to access the falls is via floating on the Buffalo River itself, where you’ll find an access trail that can take you the rest of the way. You can also access the falls via a trailhead located near Compton.
4. Nearby Hemmed in Hollow, you’ll also find Hideout Hollow on the Buffalo River.  It’s certainly one of the prettiest falls in the area. The waterfall drops about 50 feet tall, and is surrounded by gorgeous bluffs and wilderness.
5. Twin Falls, also located on the Buffalo National River, is certainly worth seeing. If you’re there at the right time of the year, you may even see three falls instead of two!
6. The final one we’ll mention in the Buffalo River area is Eden Falls, located just off the Lost Valley Trail. This waterfall drops from tall, moss-lined rocks and boulders in a beautiful narrow canyon.
7. Tea Kettle Falls is a 46 foot tall waterfall, and it pours through a hole in the rock that the water has created over many years. It’s best during high water season.
8. Eagle’s Nest Falls, a 41 foot tall waterfall, pours into a grotto from the Kings River.
9. Kings River Falls is reached after a relatively easy 2 mile hike.
10. Like the Black Bass Spillway, the dam at Lake Leatherwood also creates a beautiful waterfall worth seeing, especially as you’re exploring the magnificent Lake Leatherwood City Park.
