Being a music fan on the Internet has changed over the years… We started off with forums and fansites (like this one), then moved on to Myspace, Facebook and Twitter, and now we’ve all kind of scattered to the wind a little bit again?… These days, I sometimes feel a bit disconnected because it feels as gigs are the primary way to have a fan experience these days. For those of you who aren’t a member of Turin Brakes Fans on Facebook: it’s a nice hang out where people post pictures and videos, so please come and join! But honestly, I’m not really often on Facebook. I’m only on Facebook to check this group, basically.

So to miss live shows I was planning to go to, it was very disappointing. I had plans to record a podcast on the road with Maurice. I had some more plans that I will have to now reconfigure and see how we can make them happen… But mostly I missed seeing friends and fans that I knew were gonna be there, the live tunes and the feeling of celebrating live music together. And with the lovely Spring weather, it could have been such fun…. But I needed to recover… At least my friend Mike send me this YouTube video of Future Boy in Amsterdam. He called the Amsterdam show their best performance ever.

Anyway, finally feeling a bit better on Saturday morning, and because I still wanted to do something TB-related, I just put on those first two albums again… And I’ve started updating Ether Site, with some stuff I’ve been doing over the past few months. Some technical stuff that you probably won’t notice but that needed updating to make sure the site keeps working… And there’s more work to be done… I’ve still got two album’s’ worths of lyrics to add to the database, so the Wide-Eyed Nowhere songs are now available, with Spacehopper and some other lyrics coming very soon. Also I fixed up the design a little bit (work in progress!) and fixed some buggy lay-outs, especially on mobile.

Anyway, the podcast we promised and some other stuff will take a bit of a delay but at least Ether Site is in slightly better shape now. Hope everyone had a great time at the Italian, German and Dutch shows. I’m thankful I saw the Spacehopper tour in London at least! I’m sure I’ll get to see the band again, and hopefully that will be later this year. Keep you posted!

Recorded during their sold-out acoustic tour of 2019-20, Acoustic Live captures Turin Brakes at their most open and unfiltered (no overdubs or production tricks here..). These performances strip the songs right back, highlighting the band’s outstanding songwriting and harmony vocals. Featuring their top 5 hit “Pain Killer (Summer Rain)” alongside a selection of fan favourites and a few deeper cuts. The album was recorded and mixed by the band’s dear departed friend (and long-time sound engineer) Simon Holliday. Acoustic Live is dedicated to both Simon, and all the amazing audiences who made this one of the band’s favourite tours of the last 25 years.

This one off limited edition double coloured vinyl is housed in a gatefold sleeve with exclusive photos from the tour.

While the tracklist has not been published, the digital mock-up of the album accompanying the Instagram announcement, does feature the track names of sides C and D of the double LP, and that tracklist closely follows the setlists as we remember them from the acoustic tour. This means we’re probably getting the full concert set, including songs like Outbursts, We Were Here, Painkiller and Sea Change. The announcement sounds a bit like we’re getting songs recorded from the whole tour, but who knows, it might be one complete show?

The album will be released on double lime green vinyl. No news yet on whether the album is coming to streaming services later, or general sale after record store day. But let’s hope it’s not too hard to find! I’ll be queueing on the morning of the 18th of April! This has all the markings of a great monument of a band at the height of their live powers! Consider me very HYPED.

And this year there’s an additional layer, because we just left 2025 behind, and it’s 25 years since The Optimist LP, which for many folks means the 25th anniversary of knowing the band. For some of us it’s a little bit later. So we’d like to celebrate by creating the #TB25. A kind of virtual tour alongside 25 “Turin Brakes exhibits”. So in the voting form this year you’ll find some additional questions where you can nominate a song, album, cover, live show/tour, guitar solo, drum break, performance, fan culture, music video etcetera to be a part of this “gallery”. And in the year to come my co-host Maurice and myself (Stefan) will use these as stepping of points to look back on the past 25-ish years. How we’re gonna do this exactly, we’ll announce in the Song of the Year results livestream later this month.

Three is the magic number in so many ways. Three elements provide stability with flexibility; three acts tell a story; three pillars hold up a roof. With The Rule Of Three, the unique generation spanning entity that is QOW Trio return with a barnstorming third album. Building logically on the natural development of their two previous collections, this time the fearless threesome can be heard roaming further than ever before into the uncharted hinterlands where the deep jazz tradition of the classic tenor trio format, laden with melody and swing, ventures into the untamed regions of free improvisation.

At the heart of the band is the unmistakable beat of drummer Spike Wells, who this year celebrates his 80th birthday and the 65th year of his extraordinary career at the forefront of jazz in the UK, providing the driving force behind everyone from homegrown heroes Tubby Hayes and Bobby Wellins to visitors like Stan Getz and Roland Kirk, and countless others. Riding at his side to represent the current London based millennial cohort is saxophonist Riley Stone Lonergan, whose intriguing compositions and boundless creative imagination as an improviser continue to add to his burgeoning reputation. Representing the diversity of tastes and interests and the uncompromising creative stance typical of Gen X, big toned bassist Eddie Myer rounds out the posse.

The trio initially got together through their mutual love of Sonny Rollins’ touring piano less trios of the late 1950s and early 1960s, but soon found themselves expanding their repertoire to explore the rich and varied territory opened up by their unique combination of individual tastes. This album is their most coherent, wide ranging and adventurous set of recordings yet. From Ayler to Strayhorn, from bebop to calypso, from cowboy movie to free jazz shootout, there is a surprise at every turn, always delivered with total sincerity, conviction, and a driving desire to bring the audience with them every step of the way.

The album is rich in Riley’s stimulating original compositions. “I felt I was really able to write to the band’s strengths and bring tunes that suit what we do best.” Opening track The Rule Of Three bursts into the rodeo arena with a confident swagger, Spike and Eddie laying it down as Riley restates the eternal verities of the blues in the language of the present. The pace does not diminish for Egglet, but instead distils into a quiet, poised intensity, Spike’s brushes dancing beneath Riley’s glorious melodic invention. Kurt Angle, named for the WWF star, is a gloriously unpredictable three way tag team effort that explodes into exhilarating free improvisation before Spike’s pulsing ride cymbal brings the music back to the narrative.

Ellington is a firm favourite with all three members of QOW Trio, and Strayhorn’s Lush Life provides a rich vehicle for exploration, as Eddie and Spike lay down a woozy waltz following Riley’s breathtaking statement of the verse. Flip the disc and NowHere offers a buoyant calypso, with all three players adding their verse to tell the story. Eddie’s heavy gut string bass sets the scene for Sheriff Elvin and its dark modal exploration, saxophone skirling and drums breaking like waves. Ghosts pays tribute to the genius of Ayler, summoning fierce energy into the haunting refrain. Finally, Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling, the theme song from the classic 1952 Gary Cooper tale of revenge and justice, closes the album.

“QOW Trio continues to mature, we play as one voice in all our varied repertoire,” says Spike. The Rule Of Three is a bold and confident statement of intent from a real long term project that is as invested in the music’s future as it is inspired by and reverent of its past. “More than any other project I have ever been part of, QOW Trio really feels like a band, and I think this album shows how we have grown to understand how to bring out the best in each other,” adds Riley.
