The pre-dawn hours of the <span style="font-weight: bold;">full moon night</span>, in the month with the longest nights in the year, marks the auspicious time for Arudhra Darshan - of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Lord Nataraja</span> in Siva-temples, all over world. Falling on the day of Thiruvadirai star (also known as Arudhra) in the Tamil month of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Marghazhi </span>(December/January), is one of the two stars that have the prefix “Thiru.” The other is <span style="font-weight: bold;">Thiruvonam</span>, favoured for worship of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Sri Vishnu</span>. Thiruvadirai is favoured for Siva. On this day, when Thiruvadirai star and <span style="font-weight: bold;"> full moon</span> coincide, we celebrate the ecstatic dance of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Lord Siva</span>. All Siva temples all over the world, <span style="font-weight: bold;">celebrate </span>this <span style="font-weight: bold;">auspicious </span>occasion with special Abhishekam, Puja to <span style="font-weight: bold;">Lord Nataraja </span> and His consort <span style="font-weight: bold;">Godess Sivakami</span>, followed by <span style="font-weight: bold;">Lord's Procession</span>.<br /><br /> On this festival day, our houses are cleaned and decorated with <span style="font-weight: bold;">kolam </span>(rangoli) . "Maa-ilai (<span style="font-weight: bold;">Mango-leaf</span>) <span style="font-weight: bold;">Thoranams</span>" and "<span style="font-weight: bold;">flowers </span>thoranams" are made and tied to the Main Doors of the house, Pooja-Rooms etc.<br /><br /> A delicious sweet, known as “<span style="font-weight: bold;">Thiruvadirai Kali</span>”, is prepared in all our families. This specially made “Thiruvadirai-Kali” along with <span style="font-weight: bold;">betel -leaves</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">betel -nuts</span>, various <span style="font-weight: bold;">fruits</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">flowers</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">sandal paste</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">kumkum</span>, turmeric powder etc. are offered to the Lord Siva and distributed as Prasad to all members. Eating this Prasad on this day, connotes the devotees’ attainment of bliss.<br /><br />During Prayers (<span style="font-weight: bold;">Aarthi</span>), <span style="font-weight: bold;">Bhajans </span>and devotional songs, particularly “<span style="font-weight: bold;">Thevaram</span>”, “<span style="font-weight: bold;">Thiruvasagam</span>” and “<span style="font-weight: bold;">Thiruvempavai</span>”, are jointly sung by all family members.<br />On this day, it is a must that all family members visit a Siva Temple, particularly in the late evening and see Special <span style="font-weight: bold;">Abishekam </span>being done to Lord Nataraja. If possible, it will be a great boon if we could stay for Mid-night abhisekam also and receive Lord's blessings.<br />“Arudhra” designates a <span style="font-weight: bold;">golden red flame</span>, representing Lord Siva Himself. It is in the form of light that the Lord performs His functions of <span style="font-weight: bold;">creation</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">protection</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">destruction </span>and <span style="font-weight: bold;">concealment</span>.<br /> In <span style="font-weight: bold;">Chidambaram </span>, which houses one of the greatest temples for <span style="font-weight: bold;">Lord Nataraja</span> on this planet, Margazhi Bhramotsavam, or annual festival is celebrated with great fervor for a period of 10 days. Hundreds of thousands of devotees congregate from all over the world to witness the climax of this festival, which happens on the day of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Arudhra Darshan</span>. <span style="font-weight: bold;">The cosmic Dance of Siva</span> is enacted later that afternoon, featuring the revered images of Nataraja and Sivakami decked in regal finery. The images are then taken back to the <span style="font-weight: bold;">innermost sanctum</span>.<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Chidambaram </span>houses one of the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Pancha Sabhas</span> or the five cosmic Dance Halls of Lord Siva - <span style="font-weight: bold;">Kanakasabhai </span>. The other four are <span style="font-weight: bold;">Velli Sabhai</span> (The Hall of Silver) at <span style="font-weight: bold;">Meenakshi Temple at Madurai</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Ratnasabhai </span>(The Hall of Rubies) at <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tiruvalankadu</span>, <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tamrasabhai </span>(The Hall of Copper) at <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tirunelveli</span>, and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Chitrasabhai </span>(The Hall of Artwork) at <span style="font-weight: bold;">Kutralam</span>, near Tenkasi, all located in Tamil Nadu, India.<br />Arudhra Darshan at Tiruvaalankaadu, enshrining Lord Nataraja in the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Oordhva Taandava</span> posture, is the grandest festival here. The Velli Sabhai (Silver Hall) at the Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple at Madurai, bears a stone image of Nataraja and a festival image, both with their right foot raised. It is believed that this posture was in response to pleas by <span style="font-weight: bold;">Pandiyan king</span>, who was appalled by the thought of Nataraja's right foot becoming weary thanks to his constant dance, with his left foot raised. The Periya Sabhapati shrine, the Sandana Sabhapati shrine are scenes of festivity at the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Nellaiappar temple</span>, at Tirunelveli, during Arudhra Darshan. The festive image of Nataraja is housed in the ornate Tamra Sabha, and the Cosmic Dance of Siva is enacted on the occasion. At Kutraalam, the festival image of Nataraja is taken from the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Kutralanaathar </span>temple to the Chitra Sabha, and the Taandava Deepa Araadhana is performed there.<br />Arudra Darshan festival at <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tiruvarur </span>has been referred to in the <span style="font-weight: bold;">hymns </span>of the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Thevaram</span> saints <span style="font-weight: bold;">(7th century)</span>. Also mentioned in the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Poompaavai Patikam</span> of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Tirugnanasambandar </span> are the Arudra Darshan celebrations in the Tirumayilai Shivastalam of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Kapaaleeswarar </span>temple in the heart of Chennai. In <span style="font-weight: bold;">Sirghazhi </span>, this day is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Saint Thirugnana Sambandar and the day when that saint, while a baby, was milk feed by <span style="font-weight: bold;">Godess Parvati</span>. storyin the growing-moon crowned lord’s mount kayilai being the lead of that very ancient abode of lord showing the righteous path to the vishnu, brahma, indra and others is the nandhi. one of his disciples, vedhas learnt sage who attained the <span style="font-weight: bold;">eight great achievements</span> beginning from anima wanted to visit and stay with sage <span style="font-weight: bold;">agasthyar </span>at the <span style="font-weight: bold;">podhikai </span>mountains in thamizh land. worshiping the lord at kedhar the sage praised the <span style="font-weight: bold;">pashupati </span>at nepal. he reached the banks of the holy river ganga which as a small stream falls from his vast matted hair glittering like the lightning. bathing in the river he saluted the lord’s <span style="font-weight: bold;">avimuththam </span>abode and proceeded towards the south. saluting the <span style="font-weight: bold;">shrishailam </span>of shankara, he reached <span style="font-weight: bold;">thirukkalaththi</span>. praising the enchanting everlasting lord at thirukkalaththi entered his dancing field <span style="font-weight: bold;">alavanam</span> and bowed down to his raised foot. he came to <span style="font-weight: bold;">kanchi</span> worshipping lord <span style="font-weight: bold;">ekambaranathar</span>. involving in discussions with the <span style="font-weight: bold;">yoga munis</span> of that city he left in his journey and bowed down to the black-throated mercy at <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvadhikai</span>. he arrived in the <span style="font-weight: bold;">master of dance’s thilla</span>i. with his heart brimming with love he saw the dance of the golden beauty that acts making the matters to exist. staying and saluting the lord there for some time he came to the banks of river kaviri.<br /><br />bathing in the chill refreshing water of river kaviri he went into the lord’s abode <span style="font-weight: bold;">avaduthurai</span>. the yogi praised in undiminishing love the <span style="font-weight: bold;">lord of pashus</span> there. in spite of a feeling of not leaving that holy place emerging strongly he went out of the town continuing his journey towards podhikai. but in a short distance he saw the cows crying on the <span style="font-weight: bold;">cauvery bank</span>. moolan a herdsman who used to take care of the cows of the village <span style="font-weight: bold;">chaththanur </span>died when he brought the cowherds for grazing on the banks of the river. the cows out of their affection for their herdsman went around his body smelling him, licking him and crying. the yogi who told the world that love is lord shiva felt he would remove their suffering by his grace. realizing that only if moolan came alive the cows would get consoled, he, a splendid <span style="font-weight: bold;">siddha </span>fortified his body and introduced his soul into the body of the herdsman through air. he rose as <span style="font-weight: bold;">thirumular</span>. the cows relieved of their gloom licked him in joy, went around happily grazing on the riverbanks. the merciful nayanar safeguarded them till they grazed enough and returned after drinking water from the river. as the sun red in the heat went to have a dip in the ocean the cows thinking of their calves started walking back towards the village. the sage who showed a supreme path to the world calmly followed them to chaththanur.<br /><br />he waited till all the cows entered their respective houses. wife of the herdsman <span style="font-weight: bold;">moolan </span>saw him delaying to enter the house. anxiously she went to touch him, but he refused saying there was no relation between them and went into a common mutt. the lady who had no offspring or relatives could not sleep throughout the night. she cried and lamented to the elderly people of the town about his new behavior. those people of well analyzing capacity told the girl that he was neither mad nor had he any other association. he staying beyond the skewedness of mind, in the crystal clear <span style="font-weight: bold;">shivayoga</span>, in the height of glory unmeasurable for any human would not fit into relationship she had, they advised her. the sage thirumula nayanar in such a wonderful state got up and returned the way he came following the cowherd. the sage could not find the body he had kept it safe. he realized through his vision of spiritual wisdom that it was god’s grace that way in order to give in <span style="font-weight: bold;">thamizh </span>through his words the supreme agamas that the cool-matted haired lord gave for this world to follow and get enlightened. he explained to the relatives who continued behind him the non-continuation of the bonds. after they all left thinking the holy feet of the lord of bull flag <span style="font-weight: bold;">nayanar </span>went with great enthusiasm to salute the supreme at <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvavaduthurai</span>. sitting under the shade of arachu tree in ultimate <span style="font-weight: bold;">shivayogam </span>he gave the holy thirumandhiram (1) a marvelous medicine for the illness of incarnation. starting from ‘onravan thane’ he completed the thamiz garland of three thousand flowers for the lord who charmingly wears the horn of the boar. staying on this earth for those three thousand years, a blessed time for the upbringing of humankind he reached in non-separation the holy feet of the almighty. theist explains to a pluralist that the soul emerges from Siva just as a cloud arises from the sea. Below the river of life sweeps all things along, into and out of existence. Ultimately, the soul merges with God, like the river rejoining the ocean.</p><p class="sloka"> For pluralists, God pervades but did not create the soul; thus, God and soul remain separate realities forever. Aum.</p><p class="slokaNumber">BHASHYA</p> <p>Pluralistic Siddhantins teach that Siva pervades the soul, yet the soul is uncreated and exists eternally. It is amorphous, but has the qualities of willing, thinking and acting. It does not wholly merge in Him at the end of its evolution. Rather, it reaches His realm and enjoys the bliss of divine communion eternally. Like salt dissolved in water, soul and God are not two; neither are they perfectly one. For monistic Siddhantins the soul emerges from God like a rain cloud drawn from the sea. Like a river, the soul passes through many births. The soul consists of an uncreated divine essence and a beautiful, effulgent, human-like form created by Siva. While this form--called the <i>anandamaya kosha</i> or soul body--is maturing, it is distinct from God. Even during this evolution, its essence, Satchidananda and Parashiva, is not different from Siva. Finally, like a river flowing into the sea, the soul returns to its source. Soul and God are perfectly one. The <i>Vedas</i> say, "Just as the flowing rivers disappear in the ocean, casting off name and shape, even so the knower, freed from name and shape, attains to the Primal Soul, higher than the high." Aum Namah Sivaya.</p><p><br /></p><h3>Two Views on Creation?</h3> <p class="slokaNumber">SLOKA 147</p> <p class="sloka">Monistic theists believe that Siva creates the cosmos as an emanation of Himself. He is His creation. Pluralistic theists hold that Siva molds eternally existing matter to fashion the cosmos and is thus not His creation. Aum.</p><p class="slokaNumber">BHASHYA</p> <p>Pluralistic Siddhantins hold that God, souls and world--Pati, <i>pashu</i> and <i>pasha--</i>are three eternally coexistent realities. By creation, this school understands that Siva fashions existing matter, <i>maya,</i> into various forms. In other words, God, like a potter, is the efficient cause of the cosmos. But He is not the material cause, the "clay" from which the cosmos is formed. Pluralists hold that any reason for the creation of <i>pasha--anava, karma</i> and <i>maya</i>--whether it be a divine desire, a demonstration of glory or merely a playful sport, makes the Creator less than perfect. Therefore, <i>pasha</i> could never have been created. Monistic Siddhantins totally reject the potter analogy. They teach that God is simultaneously the efficient, instrumental and material cause. Siva is constantly emanating creation from Himself. His act of manifestation may be likened to heat issuing from a fire, a mountain from the earth or waves from the ocean. The heat is the fire, the mountain is the earth, the waves are not different from the ocean. The <i>Vedas</i> proclaim, "In That all this unites; from That all issues forth. He, omnipresent, is the warp and woof of all created things." Aum Namah Sivaya.</p><h3>Differing Views on Evil</h3>For monistic theists, the world of <i>maya</i> is Siva's perfect creation, containing each thing and its opposite. For pluralistic theists, the world is tarnished with evil; thus <i>maya</i> could not be the creation of a perfect God. Aum.<br /><br /><p class="slokaNumber">BHASHYA</p> <p>Pluralistic Siddhantins hold that the world of <i>maya</i> is intrinsically evil and imperfect, for it is clearly full of sorrow, injustice, disease and death. The soul, too, is beginninglessly tainted with <i>anava,</i> or limitation. Pluralists contend that if God had created <i>maya</i>--the material of the world--or the soul, surely He would have made them flawless, and there would be no evil, for imperfection cannot arise out of Perfection. Therefore, they conclude that <i>anava,</i> <i>karma</i> and <i>maya</i> have always existed and the soul has been immersed in darkness and bondage without beginning. Monistic Siddhantins hold that when viewed from higher consciousness, this world is seen as it truly is--perfect. There is no intrinsic evil. God Siva has created the principle of opposites, which are the means for the soul's maturation--beauty and deformity, light and darkness, love and hate, joy and sorrow. All is God Siva Himself, in Him and of Him. A perfect cosmos has issued forth from a perfect Creator. The <i>Tirumantiram</i> says, "All manifestations of nature are His grace. All animate and inanimate are His pure grace. As darkness, as light, the Lord's grace pervades." Aum Namah Sivaya.</p><p><br /></p><h3>Views on Mahapralaya?</h3>Monistic theists hold that at <i>mahapralaya,</i> cosmic dissolution, all creation is withdrawn into Siva, and He alone exists. Pluralistic theists hold that world and souls persist in seed form and will later reemerge. Aum Namah Sivaya.<br /><br /><p class="slokaNumber">BHASHYA</p> <p>Pluralistic Siddhantins contend that after <i>mahapralaya</i>--the withdrawal of time, form and space into Siva--souls and world are so close to Siva that, for all practical purposes, He alone exists. Actually, they say, both world and souls continue to exist, not as things, but as "potentialities." As if in a deep sleep, souls, now in a bodiless state, rest. Individual <i>karmas</i> lie dormant to germinate later when creation again issues forth and nonliberated souls are re-embodied to continue their spiritual journey. Monistic Siddhantins believe that souls persist through the lesser <i>pralayas</i> of the cosmic cycle, but hold that only Siva exists following <i>mahapralaya.</i> There is no "other," no separate souls, no separate world. The universe and all souls are absorbed in Siva. <i>Pasha--anava</i>, <i>karma</i> and <i>maya</i>--is annihilated. In the intensity of pre-dissolution, when time itself is accelerated, all souls attain complete maturation, losing separateness through fulfilled merger with Siva. Yea, <i>jiva</i> becomes Siva. The <i>Vedas</i> boldly decree, "By His divine power He holds dominion over all the worlds. At the periods of creation and dissolution of the universe, He alone exists." (In Telugu even today mother is called Avva) Apart from being a great poet, she played a very great role in the politics of those days; by making the great kings obey her. There are many references to her being a great Devotee of Lord Subrahmanya. Historians are of the opinion that there were, more than one lady poet who called herself as Avaiyar. One such poet existed before the birth of Christ. This poet was a great story teller and social reformer. The next Avaiyar lived in the fourteenth centaury. Her well known work is AthiChoodi, which was written foer easy learning by Tamil Children. It is interesting to note that even today; AthiChoodi shows the simple path to live well, for all children. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Vinayagar Agaval</span> is another one of her great works.<br /><br />Agaval means blank poetry and it is a song addressed to Lord Ganapathy. He is addressed as Vinayagar (he who removes obstacles) or Pillayar in Tamil. This prayer is an extremely popular one in Tamil Nadu. It clearly brings out the mastery of Avaiyar in the Yoga, thathric practices and Saivism, possibly derived from the contribution of Sidhas in Tamil Nadu and the Tamil Nadu Saivism.I have taken the pure and no limits set, taking the human form with its expression of tears continuously budding on the lotus face expressing the softness of the heart, the words that were not coined but dragged out in the flood of love that emerges from a broken dam on seeing the Dancing lord. He inspired the spirits of the people of the thamiz speaking land very deeply to experience by loving the sweetness of the <span style="font-style: italic;">Unexplorable Supreme</span>. This great saint who developed the spiritual and religious upliftment is revered as one of the four <span style="font-weight: bold;">samayak kuravar </span>(religious guides). <span style="font-weight: bold;">manikavasagar</span><br /><br />In the paNdiya kingdom which was ruled by the great <span style="font-weight: bold;">God </span>Himself as <span style="font-weight: bold;">raja saundhara pandiyan</span>, near the capital madhurai is the town <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvadhavur </span>were this great one was born. By the time he was sixteen years old he had well learnt, mastering in the philosophies and the scriptures. <span style="font-style: italic;">He outstood in the love for lord shiva and service to His devotees. </span>The jasmine need no go and advertise its fragrance to all, admirers automatically turn up to wear it on their head. <span style="font-style: italic;">The pandiya king arimardhanan</span> realizing his talent and discipline made him the prime minister in his court giving him title <span style="font-weight: bold;">thennavan biramarayan</span>. He guided the governance in the righteous path to the prosperity of the land, people and their minds. Still his mind was seeking an intellectual guide who would show in clear light the blissful path to the Truth.<br /><br />The king heard that high quality horses were on sale in the coast of the choza kingdom. He sent the prime minister <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvadhavurar </span>with lots of money to buy them. on the way vadhvUrar reached thirup <span style="font-weight: bold;">perunthurai </span>(<span style="font-weight: bold;">avudaiyar kovil</span>). There he heard from a garden the sweet chantings hara hara. The mind that jumps to the corners of the world was lost in that. He forgot himself and like a piece of iron attracted by the magnet he went in that direction. There he saw the lord sitting in the form of a shaivite sage under a tree elucidating the pupils, to see which lord sages observe austerities for births ! His seeking mind was overwhelmed at the sight of the guru he was yearning for. He surrendered himself to the Holy guru's feet and pleaded him to accept him as a disciple. The God who comes voluntarily in the way of devotees to bless them enlightened him with shivenyanam. vadhvurar who got the immense wealth of the Supreme knowledge outpoured the gems of hymns to the Glittering Feet of the lord offering his body, belongings and soul. (He then sang the first thiruvachakam song <span style="font-weight: bold;">shivapuranam </span>starting <span style="font-weight: bold;">namashivaya vazhga</span> ). The Peerless guide heard the songs and blessed him with the name Manikkavasagar (Gem speached). <span style="font-weight: bold;">He ordered Manikkavasagar to build an abode and disappeared.</span><br /><br />With the money he had brought to buy horses that would fight, kill and die in the battlefields, the devotee built a marvelous temple for the lord that would help growing the minds of the seekers in the bliss. Many days passed. The king sent people to find out what happened. His attendants reported to him the deeds of the devotee. The king was irked and sent the message to vadhavUrar ordering him to come with the horses. Manikkavasagar pleaded to the <span style="font-style: italic;">Playful lord of thirupperunthurai</span>. The lord assured him that He would bring the horses on the avaNi mUlam day and passed through the gem worded saint, a gem to the king as a mark of assurance. The prime minister Manikkavasagar told the king about the arrival of the horses. The king was happy.<br /><br />The lord probably wanted to show that patience and perseverance pays in His worship also, the horses did not arrive till day before the <span style="font-weight: bold;">avani mulam day</span>. The king got wild and arrested the prime minister. vadhavurar who had the mature vision that when the devotees surrendered themselves in wholeness to the God the Three eyed lord is the center of all deeds they do. He appealed to the lord singing anRE enRan. The God somasundara murthi who rides the bull of justice in His playful act made the foxes in the forest as horses, coming in the form of the lead man of the horses handed over them to the king explaining him the identification guidelines of good horses ! The lord went off. The same night the horses again became foxes and ran all over the capital. The king lost his sense in the peak of his ire and ordered his men to torture Manikkavasagar making him stand on the fry hot sand of the vaigai river loading him with a rock. The pained devotee with complete trust in the lord who made the vaigai river into existence for quenching the thirst of His attendant, prayed to the lord.<br /><br />The lord who stopped the furious river ga.nga in His matted hair and allowed it to flow down as a stream blessing the penance of bhagIrathan flooded the river vaigai to grace the true love hearted devotee. The flood entered the streets of the capital. The king ordered the people to sharedly stop the deluging water by raising the banks. There was a lonely old poor lady by name vandhi (1), who practices marvelous love for the Parentless God with her simple mind and activities. To save her from getting penalized for not undertaking the king's order, the lord came as a laborer. But where is the end for His play ! Instead of raising the banks he spoilt the work going on there and slept innocently !! The king was annoyed and beat Him with a stick. But the pain was felt by all the creatures including the king. The flooding of the river subdued and the lord disappeared. The king realized the act of God and the glory of the saint Manikkavasagar. He begged for the saint's pardon. The loveful vachakar forgave the king and left the prime ministership.<br /><br />He went to many abodes of the lord singing It at thirupperunthuRai, uththara kosamaNgai, thiruvarUr, thiruvidaimarudhUr, chIrkazi, thiruvaNNamalai, thirukkazukkunRam. Finally he reached the holy abode thillaich chiRRambalam. He got what the vEdas proclaim, "one gets bliss (amrita) here, even when he/she is alive" on seeing the heart stealing lord who dances there to the joy of the seeing eyes. He sang many hymns on the lord there.<br /><br />The budhdhist people who had come from Sri lanka challenged to come for a debate on religions. With the lord's order he took it and answered the blemishes they were trying to put on the lord, making a dumb girl sing His Greatness and the opponents going dumb, he established the Shaivite glory. The opponents realized the truth of the spiritual science of shaivam and started worshipping the outstanding lord shankara. maNi vachakars service to the lord continued. The lord was getting anointed with his honey like words and the pure wonderful love. The lord wanted those gems of his hymns which could not be found a peer even the whole world is excavated to be glorified and passed to generations by generations to the world for our benefit of getting to praise the lord in sweet loveful words easily and even the hardest of the minds getting nurtured in love reading his hymns. He oneday went to the blessed saint Manikkavasagar, asked him to sing the complete thiruvachakam he had composed and wrote them down. He further asked him to sing the songs of love keeping the Dancing lord of thillai as the Hero the thirukkovaiyar. He wrote them also in the palm leaves book and put His seal as "as maNikka vachakan told the lord of thiruchchiRRambalam wrote this". He kept the script in the panychakkara steps of the abode and vanished.<br /><br />The next day the priests of thillai were surprised to find the scripture on the steps of the abode with the lord's signature. They rushed to <span style="font-weight: bold;">Manikkavasagar </span>and appraised him about it. They saluted and asked him to explain them the <span style="font-style: italic;">philosophical explanation </span>of the compositions. He took them to the golden hall abode of the lord and showed the blissfully<span style="font-weight: bold;"> Dancing lord </span>and said <span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">He is the meaning of it and immersed himself in the Supreme luminance and became one in lord shiva</span>. That God is worshipped by the divines and so do the daemons and so are the seers and great devotees. an <span style="font-weight: bold;">asura </span><span style="font-style: italic;">who excelled in devotion of lord shiva is the banasura</span>.<br /><br />in the <span style="font-weight: bold;">asura </span>lineage was the <span style="font-style: italic;">king bana born</span>. His wife was supradikai. <span style="font-style: italic;">The daemon king bana was very much devoted to the worship of lord shiva</span>. He used to worship the shiva <span style="font-weight: bold;">linga<span style="font-style: italic;"> </span></span><span style="font-style: italic;">regularly with care and devotion</span>. God, Who is beyond any barriers, rewarded the virtue of the asura by which he worships and blessed him with wealth, power and reign. The asura king ruled the kingdom <span style="font-weight: bold;">continuing his heartfelt worship of lord shiva</span>.<br /><br />one day he went to the abode of the lord, <span style="font-weight: bold;">mount kailasha</span>, to have <span style="font-weight: bold;">darshan </span>of the God. The daemon did not care for the properness to seek the entry at that great abode, but tried to just walk in ignoring all due permission-seeking. The ganas who were guarding the abode, looking at the inappropriate behavior of the daemon at the abode of God, took him like an insect and threw him off. He fell off the <span style="font-weight: bold;">chakravala giri</span>. later he got back to his conscience and returned home.<br /><br />as a daemon he felt humiliated. as a devotee he wanted to worship <span style="font-weight: bold;">kailashapati </span>well. <span style="font-style: italic;">This ego-full devotee worshipped lord shiva vigorously and ardently. pleased, lord shiva</span> asked him what boon he wanted. bana pleaded to lord, that He stays along with His family at the entrance of bana's palace ! bana said by this way he can worship the God without any regulations. lord shiva - the immeasurable almighty but Who is very simple and loving to those who worship with sincere devotion - <span style="font-weight: bold;">gave the boon to be the guard at his palace</span> entrance !!<br /><br />in the abode he built for the God at the entrance of the palace, <span style="font-style: italic;">banasura worshipped the lord shiva, shakti, vignesha and skandha</span> with love and dedication very much. Due to the ardent worship he practiced, he won over the worlds and was just glorious in all the directions.<br /><br />as the days passed by, he once again got the desire to fight with a powerful person. now he hardly had any to fight with who could quench his thirst of valor. What did he do now ? Went to the God Himself saluted and asked, "oh God, i do not find anybody else who can valorously fight with me. Why don't You come for a fight with me ?" What a character is he !!<br /><br />God told him that there is no need for that as there would be fight with <span style="font-weight: bold;">krishna </span>very soon. <span style="font-style: italic;">The ego-ful bana grinned saying he won over yadu vira krishna eighteen times earlier and he is no match for him</span>. God told him that krishna had taken up <span style="font-weight: bold;">shivadiksha </span>from <span style="font-weight: bold;">upamanyu maharishi </span>and with the practice he is glorious and formidable to fight with.<br /><br />The daughter of banasura called <span style="font-weight: bold;">ushai </span>was in love with the grandson of <span style="font-weight: bold;">krishna </span>called <span style="font-weight: bold;">anirudda</span>. By her magical powers she abducted <span style="font-weight: bold;">anirudda </span>into her palace. <span style="font-weight: bold;">krishna </span>found out that it was the daughter of bana who abducted his grandson. He besieged the palace of bana. He saw the abode of lord shiva at the entrance of the palace and hence he worshipped the lord there. lord shiva blessed him but told him that He was guarding the palace of bana and if kriShna wanted to win over the palace he has to fight with the lord.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">krishna </span>was taken aback. But God encouraged him to fight. now krishna fired very many arrows from his bow sarnga. They did not hurt the lord but fell as offering to God. The lord enjoyed the fight. meanwhile <span style="font-weight: bold;">banasura </span>was out in destroying the army of <span style="font-weight: bold;">krishna</span>. So krishna moved towards him and fought with him. now bana saw a formidable opponent who can put off banas thirst for fight !<span style="font-style: italic;"> in a fierce battle with his chakrayudha krishna started chopping off all the thousand hands of banasura.</span> all bana needed was the lesson to rectify his ego and he had got it by then. <span style="font-weight: bold;">now the lord asked krishna to spare bana with four hands and so did kriShna</span>.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">now krishna and bana became friendly towards each other (afterall they both are the ardent devotees of lord shiva).</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;">bana married his daughter to the grandson of krishna - anirudda, in a grand manner. </span>afterwards banasura went to the banks of river <span style="font-weight: bold;">narmadha </span>and <span style="font-weight: bold;">worshipped God there very ardently</span>. When the lord appeared, he asked the <span style="font-weight: bold;">boon </span>of being one of <span style="font-weight: bold;">lord's gana </span>and wanted to be the exclusive player of drum when the lord dances. He also asked the boon that the shivalingas worshipped by him in the banks of river narmada be called <span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">banalingam </span>and the world worship them with great reverence. God gave him both the <span style="font-weight: bold;">boons </span>and<span style="font-weight: bold;"> took him one in His ganas</span>. He came in the family, which is the priest for the lord murugan temple kandha <span style="font-weight: bold;">kottam </span>in that city. He had well learnt <span style="font-weight: bold;">thamizh </span>and <span style="font-weight: bold;">Samskritam </span>and had a very good poetic talence. He had ardent love for lord <span style="font-weight: bold;">murugan</span>.<br /><br />one day lord <span style="font-weight: bold;">muruga </span>appeared in the dream of his devotee and ordered him to compose his story in <span style="font-weight: bold;">thamizh </span>which is told in the <span style="font-weight: bold;">shiva rahasya kandam</span>, which is the first kandam in <span style="font-weight: bold;">shankara samhita</span>, which is one of the <span style="font-weight: bold;">six samhitas</span> of the <span style="font-weight: bold;">skandha puranam</span> in <span style="font-weight: bold;">samskritam</span>. He asked the devotee to name it as <span style="font-weight: bold;">kandha puranam</span> and also gave the start off words as <span style="font-weight: bold;">thigadachakkaram</span>. The devotee when woke up was thrilled with joy. He saluted the lord muruga and started composing the <span style="font-weight: bold;">kandha puranam</span> each day 100 verses. everyday after completing the 100 verses he used to keep the written palm leaves at the feet of lord <span style="font-weight: bold;">muruga</span>. When he returns the next day, he would see that a few places in his work have been corrected ! This way the loving devotee completed the work comprising of six <span style="font-weight: bold;">kandams </span>and 10345 verses all together.<br /><br />later he called for the meet of scholars of thondai land and get his work approved in that meet, as it was customery in those days. When he started elucidating the <span style="font-weight: bold;">kandha puranam </span>praying the lord, he started with the first line <span style="font-weight: bold;">thigada chakkarach chemmukam aindhulam </span>(<span style="font-style: italic;">The one with glorious ten hands and five perfect faces)</span>. For this the word thigadachakkram would be broken into <span style="font-weight: bold;">thigaz dhachakkaram</span>. one of the poets in the hall raised an objection saying that there existed no rule in thamizh grammar that would render the combination of z and dha into da, and asked <span style="font-weight: bold;">kachchiyappa shivachariyar</span> to show the rule and then proceed. The devotee who was stopped at debut was unable to answer and requested the oppponent to accept it as it is, since it was given to him by lord <span style="font-weight: bold;">muruga</span>. But the other poet did not agree and halted the presentation.<br /><br />The devotee with a broken heart fell on the feet of lord <span style="font-weight: bold;">muruga </span>and cried that only lord muruga could explain the wordings he gave. He slept there itself of fatigue. inhis dream the lord muruga told him that his problem will be solved in the next day session by a choza poet. When the meeting started the next morning, there was a young charming poet at the center of the stage with a book in his hand. as the opponent poet again raised the question in the session, the young poet rose and directed the attention of the scholars to the 18th song in the <span style="font-style: italic;">sandhip padalam</span> of a grammar text called <span style="font-weight: bold;">virachoziyam</span>, which suggested the rendering of the combination under controversy. The entire hall lauded the referance and wondered how they forgot that grammar rule. at once the young poet disappeared. realising that it was <span style="font-style: italic;">lord </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">muruga </span><span style="font-style: italic;">himslef the scholars commended the work of </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">kachiyappar</span><span style="font-style: italic;">.</span><br /><br />The presentation went on well. at the completion of it the corporates of the city took him around the city on a tusk palanquin as a markof respect. The devotee taught this text to his students nyana varodhayar and others, made copies written. His period could be derived as 13th century, as that was the period of <span style="font-weight: bold;">meykandar</span>. There a devotee by name <span style="font-weight: bold;">aludaiya dheva nayanar</span> approached him to become his disciple. Blessing him uyya vandha dhevar composed <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvundhiyar</span>, which is one of the <span style="font-weight: bold;">santhana texts </span>(1). later he returned back to north. This is one story about him, but there are no evidences for the same. The style of his work <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvundhiyar </span>has some <span style="font-weight: bold;">resemblence </span>with the style of <span style="font-weight: bold;">thirumandhiram </span>and is in the <span style="font-weight: bold;">old thamizh literature style. </span>The time thiruvundhiyar was written is said to be 1147 a.C.e.<br /><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;"> Thirukkadavur uyyavandhadevar</span><br /><br />This <span style="font-weight: bold;">shaivite philosopher</span> was the disciple of aludaiya dheva nayanar, who was the disciple of <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruviyalur uyyavandhadeva nayanar</span> (2), who authored the <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvundhiyar</span>. This saint elaborated <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvundhiyar </span>in his work <span style="font-weight: bold;">thirukkalirrup padiyar</span> . These two books are the first two in the <span style="font-weight: bold;">santhana books</span>. Here is our great devotee <span style="font-weight: bold;">chembiyam madeviyar</span>, who made very vast land to prosper and become a bastion for esteemed spiritual thinking. These were not by revolution; no one night changes, but it was through the nurturing of people she grew these miraculous herbs that had influence for centuries !<br /><br />She was born as the daughter of the king <span style="font-weight: bold;">mazavaraiyan </span>(a small king who supported the choza kingdom. Her accumulated austerities brought her a marvelous husband <span style="font-weight: bold;">kandaradhiththa choza dhevar</span>(1) an emperor who felt more privileged to be a devotee than to be ruling an empire. <span style="font-style: italic;">The loving couple did not only lead a life which put in practice what the moral scriptures say as the fruit of the married life, but also governed the country to prosper and did lots of endowments for the lord shiva</span>, Who gives prosperity for the pashus. When her husband reached out the Blissful Dancing Feet of the lord, this mature motherly lady lived for nurturing her son and the children in the royal family like <span style="font-style: italic;">kundhavai and rajarajan in high morality and sincere shiva bhakti</span>. it is not just the one who performs marvels who needs to be applauded, but it is also those who encouraged or nurtured them deserve the praise. That way this <span style="font-style: italic;">choza queen granny shaped an emperor rajarajan</span>(2), who ruled almost whole of south Bharat and the indian ocean, encouraging art and philosophy, bringing in peace and prosperity, with the benefits of <span style="font-weight: bold;">shaivam </span>reaching the people of various regions. She has done very many endowments to the abodes of <span style="font-weight: bold;">lord shiva</span>. She converted many abodes which were built with brick material to granite /stone built structures which stand durable for very many centuries. Sure, the eternal lord stood in her mind arrested within her rock like abode of devotion. She contributed golden and silver ornaments to the abodes for the lord, Whose Feet are the best ornament for the head of the devotees. in the intimate love she had for her husband <span style="font-weight: bold;">kandaradhiththa chozar</span> she renovated the <span style="font-weight: bold;">thirunallam </span>to a stonework structure in the name of her husband. The big list of the temples where is queen of good women did marvelous services include <span style="font-style: italic;">virudhdhachalam, thirukodika, thenkurangadu thurai, chembiyan madhevi, thiruvarur araneri, thiruththuruththi, anangur, thirumananycheri, thiruvakkara</span>i. Certainly this is not the exhaustive list of the temples for which she contributed.<br /><br />This lady who excelled in her love to the lord, Who is love itself, was called <span style="font-weight: bold;">maadhevadikal</span> (the slave of the Great God) by the people in respect and affection. When she got attracted to <span style="font-weight: bold;">alala sundharar</span>, she was born as <span style="font-weight: bold;">sangiliyaar </span>in <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvotriyur </span>to lead the loveful life with him.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">sangiliyaar </span>was born to <span style="font-weight: bold;">thirunyayiru kizavar</span> who was a peasant near <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvotriyur</span>. She grew with a divine feeling by the radiance of which she was quite distinguishable with others. She grew up as a beautiful young girl and as one who has the imperishable eternal Beautiful God and Goddess in her mind. Her parents wanted their virtuous pretty daughter to be married soon. <span style="font-weight: bold;">sangiliyaar </span>wanted to lead a life in which the focus was on the divine. She asked them to leave her in the abode of the lord of <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvotriyur </span>in the almighty's service. They were quite shocked to hear this and found difficult to digest the fact that she did not want to lead the normal life in the young pretty age. one of the relatives without knowing her inclination sent the proposal to marry her. But something bad happened to him. The relatives were quite worried. They left her as she wished in the temple of <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvotriyur </span>where the lord of all sacrifices reside. They made a monastery for her to perform austerities.<br /><br />Young <span style="font-weight: bold;">paravaiyar </span>without allowing the dirties of the external world staining her chaste service minded thoughts, stayed in the <span style="font-weight: bold;">kanni madam</span> closed behind the curtains. She with the feeling of the Feet of the divine parents constantly overwhelming in her mind, served the lord making the garlands for the worship of the lord of <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvotriyur</span>. She used to come outside the curtains to give the garlands to be offered to the lord and immediately go back. She was in this service of the lord for a long time. one day when she appeared as a lightning to give the garlands <span style="font-weight: bold;">sundharar</span>(1) saw her while returning from the abode. The old time acquaintance at <span style="font-weight: bold;">kayilai </span>bringing in the love for her, he requested the lord.<br /><br />The lord appeared in the dream of the chaste devotee <span style="font-weight: bold;">sangiliyaar</span>. He told her the very great devotion of <span style="font-weight: bold;">sundharar </span>and asked her to get <span style="font-weight: bold;">married </span>to him. <span style="font-style: italic;">She replied that as He ordered she would get married to him. The lord said He would get an assurance from </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">sundharar </span><span style="font-style: italic;">that he would not leave her. chundharar was reluctant to give the assurance because he wanted to sing the fame of the lord in many abodes. So he asked the lord to stay outside under the makizam tree when he makes the assurance to </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">sangiliyaar </span><span style="font-style: italic;">at the abode ! But the lord indicated this plan to </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">sangiliyaar </span><span style="font-style: italic;">and asked her to ask for the pledge under the makizam tree. Blessed is her chaste devotion !</span><br /><br />as the lord advised she took the <span style="font-weight: bold;">promise from sundharar</span> under the tree though she was feeling bad that she was coming in the way of the wish of the devotee. By the grace of the lord Who is the union of male and female, the devotees arranged the wedding of this dedicated couple. They lived praising the glory of the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Supreme</span>. after <span style="font-weight: bold;">sundharar </span>left on his desire to salute the lord of <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvarur</span>, she continued her service to lord shiva to reach in His abode back in her original position as the attendant of the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Goddess</span>. From her childhood itself she was virtuous and very much interested in the worship of the inseparable shiva-shakthi. Beautiful in appearance she also used to sing in her melodious voice the glory of the<span style="font-style: italic;"> God and Goddess</span> with high involvement.<br /><br />one day when she was on her way to the temple she got to see <span style="font-weight: bold;">sundhara murthi nayanar </span>(1), who made an impression in her heart. He too was quite attracted by her. Coming to know about his devotion for the lord Who held the river in His hair, her love for him grew. The virtuous girl appealed to the lord about her love. <span style="font-weight: bold;">sundharar </span>also seeking this impressive girl to the lord, the lord Who shines in the wedding robe with parvati, ordered the devotees of the town to arrange the wedding of these two devotees.<br /><br />The devotional couple led the life of devotion, charity and love for each other with which the married life becomes fruitful. She served the lord of divines and led a life of well synchronized service to the devotees. When by the Grace of the God Who doesn't know the limits in giving boons, <span style="font-weight: bold;">sundharar </span>got mounts of food grains, her broad mind that enthrones the Boundless bhagavan shared that with the people of the town. She asked <span style="font-weight: bold;">sundharar peruman </span>to bring money. For what ! She wanted to donate and take part in the service during the lord's festival of <span style="font-weight: bold;">panguni uththiram</span>. How great this inspiring lady by name thilakavathiyar (she is really <span style="font-style: italic;">thilaka for the womankind</span>!!) should have been to make not just a successful man but a great sage, thinking of even whose name would induce an ocean of love for that dancing lord in oneself - that great <span style="font-weight: bold;">thirunavukkarasar peruman</span> . (1)<br /><br />There was a small kingdom called <span style="font-weight: bold;">thirumunaippadi </span>in the choza empire region. There was this small town of great people called thiruvamur . in the family that cultivates the plants in the fields and that cultivates superior discipline in action lived the couple <span style="font-weight: bold;">pukazanar</span> , <span style="font-weight: bold;">madhiniyar </span>. like the goddess of wealth who comes out from the blooming lotus, as a boon for the devotees <span style="font-weight: bold;">thilakavathiyar </span>was born to them. a few years later there was born the seer of untiring service <span style="font-weight: bold;">thirunavukkarachar </span>. That twice blessed couple brought up those two children as the two eyes.<br /><br />When <span style="font-weight: bold;">thilakavathiyar </span>became thirteen kalippakaiyar who was born in a family of similar respect, having lots of respect for the lord with matted hair, highly generous and decorated by his good qualities and valiance, the colonel of the king proposed through elderly people to get married to her. <span style="font-weight: bold;">pukazanar </span>agreed for the marriage and the festivities started. in that period there came a war with the a king from north for which kalippakaiyar went to lead the army before getting married. meanwhile proving the transienceof the life her father fell sick and went to heaven. in that shock his chaste wife madhiniyar also left her mortal body to join her husband. With loss of both the parents <span style="font-weight: bold;">thilakavathiyar </span>and her brother <span style="font-weight: bold;">marunikkiyar </span>(<span style="font-weight: bold;">thirunavukkarasar</span>) were drowning in the ocean of sadness. By the time their relatives consoled them they got the information that <span style="font-weight: bold;">kalippakaiyar </span>became martyr in the battlefield.<br /><br />She thought that her loving mother and father wanted her to get married to <span style="font-weight: bold;">kalippakaiyar</span>, so she wanted to join his soul. Shocked by her decision <span style="font-weight: bold;">marunikkiyar </span>fell in her feet to say that already he had lost the parents but would not be able to bear it if she also decides to leave him alone. For the sake of the survival of her brother she decided to stay alive renouncing all the pleasures with the heart that has love for all the lives. <span style="font-weight: bold;">marunikkiyar</span> did lot of good services to come out of his sorrows.<br /><br />When <span style="font-weight: bold;">marunikkiyar </span>was exploring the concepts of instability in human lives he was illusioned by the Jain philosaphies and joined the group where nonviolance was apparent but not. While this was the case for <span style="font-weight: bold;">marunikkiyar thilakvathiyar </span>spent more of her attention in the almighty taken abode in the place <span style="font-weight: bold;">thirivadhikai </span>, where He burnt the three impurities. Wearing the holy symbols of lord <span style="font-weight: bold;">shiva </span>she did holy services like brooming the temple and then washing the floor with the purifying cow dung, making garlands for the God. She was worshipping the God with a heavy heart to rescue her brother from falling into the sins who had fell in the trap of an incomplete religion. The prayers that are done with love and truthfulness though may take time will surely fetch good results. The graceful lord decided to answer her prayer. He gave a heavily painful stomach-ache to <span style="font-weight: bold;">marunikkiyar</span>.<br /><br />The Jain groups tried their best to cure his pain but in vain. When they washed their hands off <span style="font-weight: bold;">marunikkiyar </span>sent a person to his sister. That mother like sister who was strong in her determination conveyed clearly that she would not leave the abode of the lord to come to the place of Jains. Her love for the brother was quite high, because of which she wanted not only his rescue from the serious stomach-ache but also wanted his rescue from his ignorance of not praying lord shiva. as the lord intended to bless <span style="font-weight: bold;">marunikkiyar</span>, he decided to leave the company of Jains and reach the feet of <span style="font-weight: bold;">thilakavathiyar</span>. To the crying brother who fell at her feet she told you who <span style="font-weight: bold;">dwelled </span>in unclear <span style="font-weight: bold;">philosaphies </span>get up and serve the lord who liberates.<br /><br />She took him to the abode of the lord in <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvadhikai </span>and gave the wealth of Holy ash saying the beautiful five letters of the lord. He humbly wore the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Holy ash</span> that <span style="font-style: italic;">removes the ignorance and praised the lord</span> with the <span style="font-weight: bold;">padhikam</span>(song) <span style="font-weight: bold;">kurrayinavaru vilakkakilir </span>that brings the tears of love, with his great love for Him raising over the peaks to illuminate the entire world to wipe away ignorance. The King of all medicines, that lord <span style="font-weight: bold;">shankara</span> relieved him from his pain, made him <span style="font-weight: bold;">thirunavukkarasar </span>and put him to the bliss. He was born in shaivite farmer family of sekkizhar tradition with his younger brother palaravayar. The <span style="font-weight: bold;">choza </span>king - <span style="font-weight: bold;">kuloththunga chozan</span> ii (<span style="font-weight: bold;">anapayar</span>) - who was ruling the region then wondered at the <span style="font-weight: bold;">intelligence, honesty and excellence</span> of sekkizhar and made him his prime minister knighting him as <span style="font-weight: bold;">uththama choza pallavar</span>. sekkizhar was an ardent devotee of lord Shiva in <span style="font-weight: bold;">thirunageshwaram </span>and did a lot of services to that temple. He built a temple in <span style="font-weight: bold;">kunraththur </span>and named that too <span style="font-weight: bold;">thirunageshwaram</span>.<br /><br />The king who was much interested in arts was mostly appreciating the thamiz book <span style="font-weight: bold;">shivaka chindhamani</span>. as a dedicated minister to guide the king in the proper way, sekkizhar advised him that those books will do good neither for living nor for liberation and on his question he told the king that the lives of the devotees who were praised in the thiruththondaththokai(1) of <span style="font-weight: bold;">sundharar</span>(2), which was later sung by <span style="font-weight: bold;">nambiyandar nambi </span>in his <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruththondar thiruvandhadhi</span>, are the great thing to read and follow. inspired by this the<span style="font-style: italic;"> king asked sekkizhar to sing in detail the lives of the devotees as an epic</span>.<br /><br />sekkizhar agreed and <span style="font-style: italic;">worshiped the dancing lord (natarajar) at chithambaram.</span>(3) <span style="font-style: italic;">The lord gave him the first word to start the epic as</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;">ulakelam</span>. (sekkizhar has used this word with respect in the beginning, middle and end of the work). Then he wrote the entire <span style="font-weight: bold;">periya puranam </span>and was made public in <span style="font-weight: bold;">chithambaram </span>in the presence of <span style="font-style: italic;">intellectuals, saints and others. after the arangerram (publication)</span>, the king took sekkizhar around the town on the royal elephant and he himself fanned sekkizhar during the procession. He made the <span style="font-weight: bold;">periya puranam </span>as the <span style="font-weight: bold;">twelth thirumurai</span>.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruth thondar puranam</span> is the only work available that was written by <span style="font-weight: bold;">sekkizhar</span>. after writing the <span style="font-weight: bold;">periya puranam</span> sekkizhar involved himself completely the lives of the 63 saints along with other devotees and finally reached the sweet feet of lord Shiva.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">other names of sekkizhar:</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">arun mozith thevar (original name)</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">thondar chir paravuvar</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">uththama choza pallavar </span>Adiyaarku-adiyenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15248807772688878968noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8879462758696702395.post-90901316644348395942009-06-14T12:27:00.000-07:002009-06-14T12:33:00.030-07:00Thirunaraiyur nambiyandar nambi<span style="font-weight: bold;">Thirunaraiyur nambiyandar nambi</span><br /><br />This is the great devotee to whom the shaivite devotees are indebted for making available the marvelous and peerless <span style="font-weight: bold;">thevaram </span>hymns of <span style="font-weight: bold;">sambandhar, appar, sundharar</span> (2) and also writing briefly the history of the 63 splendid shaivite devotees who were mentioned in the <span style="font-weight: bold;">sundharar</span>'s thiruththondaththokai, which was the basis on which <span style="font-weight: bold;">chekkizar </span>wrote the nurturing literature of thiruththondarpuranam(3). He is also one of the authors of the eleventh thirumurai (1).<br /><br />This devotee who did marvel in the youth was born in the town of thirunaraiyur in the tradition of <span style="font-weight: bold;">adhi shaivites, </span>who undertake the service of priesthood in the temples of <span style="font-weight: bold;">Three-eyed lord. </span>after getting initiation into the <span style="font-weight: bold;">veda </span>learning, he started the learning of arts and scriptures along with vedas. one day as his father had to go to out of town, he took up the worship of the lord <span style="font-weight: bold;">pollap pillaiyar</span> in that town's temple. The young child went to the temple of the little elephant of the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Supreme</span>. He did the worship as he had learnt. He gave the food offerings to the elphant headed lord. He did not know that his father used to dedicate the offerings symbolocally to the lord and then take it back. The young child was waiting for the elephant headed lord to eat the food. as the lord did not, he started crying thinking the worship he made was faulty and hence the lord has not accepted it. Quite some time he was weeping. Finally he decided crash his head as the lord did not accept the food offering. The innocent and sincere love of this young kid brought the unbelievable grace of the lord. The elephant headed lord stopped the child from crashing his head and ate all the food offering the child had brought , which was purified by his faultless love. as the lord pleasently ate and blessed the child, he requested the lord to teach the leasons that would have happened in the school that day as it was already late for the school, else his teacher would beat him. The elephant of supreme knowledge whom everybody salutes to get the wisdom to worship the unexplorable lord <span style="font-weight: bold;">shiva</span>, taught this blessed kid the lessons !!<br /><br />This happened the following day also and continued. The news spread like the fragrance of jasmine and the great <span style="font-weight: bold;">choza emperor rajarajan </span>(4) got to hear this. He along with the ministers, courtmen, people came in a big procession to <span style="font-weight: bold;">thirunaraiyur </span>bringing along with them huge quantities of bananas, honey, flaked rice, sweet pancake and sesame balls as offerings for the lord. in that suddenly crowded town he saluted the feet of the young renowned devotee nambiyandar nambi and requested him to offer to the broken dented lord all those heaps of bananas, mangoes and jack fruits along with other offerings right then. The flawless child also worshipped the lord with purity and love and the lord of wisdom of lord shiva ate all those heaps of offerings in one shot with the trunk hand ! The suprised king hailed the child and he pleaded out of his marvelous love for the matted haired lord that his prayer was to get the hymns done by the three great shaivite saints (<span style="font-weight: bold;">sambandhar, appar, sundharar</span>) in total. The child out of the confidence on the elephant headed lord assured the king that he would get him the information. With the tears of devotion filling his eyes, the child worshipped the trunk handed lord to give the information. The gracious lord disclosed the information, which became the great blessing for the shaivites to get their marvelous scripture. The palm leaves of those great hymns were kept behind the <span style="font-style: italic;">Dancing lord of thillai </span>and there is hand symbol marking the place. lord also disclosed the information through nambi that <span style="font-weight: bold;">thirunyana sambandhar's</span> hymns were 16000, <span style="font-weight: bold;">thirunavukkarasar</span>'s were 49000 and <span style="font-weight: bold;">sundharar</span>'s were 39000.<br /><br />When <span style="font-weight: bold;">nambi </span>and the king went to thillai and opened the specified place they were apalled to see that most of those valueless hymns were eated off by termites !! a great loss !! The lord's voice stating whatever required were left, consoled them. What they could recover was a less than 10 percent of the whole hymns. The king arranged for multiply coping the hymns that were not destroyed by termites and preserving them. The shaivite world would be indebted to these two great devotees for saving the marvelous peerless hymns thevaram atleast partially. on the king's request <span style="font-weight: bold;">nambi </span>arranged the hymns along with the other great hymns like <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvasakam, thirumandhiram as thirumurai </span>(ordered holy text). With the help of a lady who came in the tradition of <span style="font-weight: bold;">nilakanta yazpanar</span> the pan (melody) of the thevaram hymns were also got. <span style="font-weight: bold;">nambi </span>with the blessings of <span style="font-weight: bold;">pillaiyar</span>, realised the history of the 63 great devotees mentioned by <span style="font-weight: bold;">sundharar </span>and wrote a brief of their lives in his <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruththondar</span> <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvandhadhi</span>. He also recorded the life of <span style="font-weight: bold;">sambandhar </span>and appar in the various hymns he wrote in praise of them. This servant of shaivam has authored many hymns which are compiled under eleventh <span style="font-weight: bold;">thirumurai </span>(1). This devotee of wisdom and experience, has written many poems that educate the people of the perspectives that one would not have thought about or would have been reluctant to think about. (2) This devotee of the end 9 th century aCe, has lived as the rich as well as a begging saint and provided us the wisdom out of it, "Don't get lost in logistics of life. realize the Truth and live blissfully praising it."<br /><br />The once very famous shore city of the <span style="font-weight: bold;">choza empire</span>, which was a major hub for business given its geographical location having a <span style="font-style: italic;">port</span>, is <span style="font-weight: bold;">kavirippumpattinam </span>or <span style="font-weight: bold;">pukar </span>where the lifeline river <span style="font-weight: bold;">kaviri </span>enters the ocean. understandable from the commercial importance of the city, there lived lots of businessmen prospering in local and international trade. There lived one rich <span style="font-weight: bold;">businessman</span>, by name <span style="font-weight: bold;">shiva neyar</span>, rich not just in material wealth but also in the discipline, charity, integrity and devotion for the lord Who made kubera the deva of wealth. For him and his chaste wife <span style="font-weight: bold;">nyanakalai</span>, a child was born as the fruit of their discipline and devotion. as it was born by the Grace of the lord taken abode in the nearby town <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvenkadu</span>, they named the child as <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvenkadar</span>. The child grew over the mounts of wealth. When he was five years old, his father reached the Feet of the lord praised by <span style="font-weight: bold;">vedic </span>rites.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvenkadar </span>learnt the art and literature and shined in discipline and devotion for the lord on Holy Bull. When he was sixteen, he was married to the girl appropriate for him called shivakalai, daughter of <span style="font-weight: bold;">shivachithambarach chettiyar </span>and <span style="font-weight: bold;">shivakami ammaiyar.</span> The fruit of the married life is love and charity. This couple lived for it supporting the devotees of the lord, Who goes on alms, and the righteous people. as one of the duties and the means for the married people <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvenkadar </span>set to develop the business. He splendored in his effort and became the very rich person known across the borders. He brought in wealth through the trade over the sea and on the land. Though he had covetous money, he did not have an offspring till he was thirty years old. an ardant devotee of the Father of the universe, he worshiped the lord at <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvidaimarudhur </span>pleading it to grant him a child.<br /><br />The lord <span style="font-weight: bold;">marudhavanar </span>wanted to show grace on two of his true devotees. There lived a servant of the God by name shiva charumar, who had his heart lost in the salutations to the Sweet lord Who swallowed the terrible poison halahalam. He regularly hosted the devotees of the lord providing them feast and materials. in this process he became poor, but as a determined devotee did not slip in his service. The lord marudhavanar wanting to show way for both this devotee and <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvenkadar </span>appeared in the dreams of <span style="font-weight: bold;">shiva nechar</span> and his synchronised wife sushila that there would be a child in the shade of the bilva tree near the abode the next day and they could take and give the child to <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvenkadar </span>couple and get lots of wealth for continuing shiva nechars service. The same way the lord ordered thiruvenkadar to liberally donate to shiva nechar when he brings the child to him. The same happened to the joy of both the devotees and they thanked the lord marudhavanar.<br /><br />as the child was got by the Grace of lord marudhavanar, thriuvenkadar named the child as marudhavanan and nurtured that child of wealth in all affection. The young marudhavanan liberated the gandharva called manibaththiran who was cursed to be a fish by a sage sindhu muni. When the age became sixteen, marudhavanan went on trade over the ocean. on return brought the bags of dung, but in which were concealed the rare valuable gems and also gave a box to the mother and disappeared ! The father who had lots of materialistic thinking developing the business, was searching the son and came to open the box marudhavanan had left with the mother. There was a ear(hole)less needle and a palm leaf wound in a silk cloth. in the palm leaf it was written <span style="font-style: italic;">kadharra uchiyum varadhu kanum kadaivazikke</span>(even the ear(hole)less needle won't come for the last journey !). This statement broke into him, shattering his materialistic illusions and grew a great wisdom in him.<br /><br />With the Supreme Guru's Grace guiding him, he renounced his wealth and material life and determined to completely get into the Glorious path of lord shiva. He commanded his dutiful head clerk chendhanar(3) to distribute all his wealth for charities and endowments, advised and consoled his wife and became a sage. The relatives who had only the status as their prime concern and not the love were unable to digest their highly wealthy relative wandering like a beggar in the streets. They gave him poisoned appam(a kind of cake) through his sister. But the enlightened saint <span style="font-weight: bold;">pattinaththadikal</span>, realised this and through it on the roof of the house singing ottappam vittaich chudum. The house and the neighborhood caught fire and the relatives fell in his feet and pleaded for mercy. Then <span style="font-weight: bold;">pattinaththar </span>extinguished it by singing another song <span style="font-style: italic;">thangalaik kettup pirandhilam</span>. He stayed in that city till his mother died, on her request.<br /><br />later he went to <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvidaimarudhur </span>and sang the <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvidaimarudhur mummanik kovai</span>. He went on traveling singing the songs of wisdom in many abodes in choza, pandiya, malai, thondai, kongu, thuluva states (south bharat). He went to the north also saluting the lord of the whole world. He resurrected a boy who died of illness in thiruvarur. in kongu state, one day as he was quite hungry in the late night, he knocked at the door of a house. The people in the house mistook him as a thief and beat and tortured him. The neighbours realising he is a saint, intervened and set him free. From then on <span style="font-weight: bold;">pattinaththar </span>made a pledge that unless somebody comes and gives the food, he won't go to anybody's doorstep asking for food.<br /><br />When he was in a town <span style="font-weight: bold;">unychenai makalam</span> in <span style="font-weight: bold;">thuluva </span>state, he was meditating on the all-pervading lord <span style="font-weight: bold;">shankara </span>in a <span style="font-weight: bold;">pillaiyar </span>temple. Some thieves who were pleased with their robbery in the palace, threw a pearl garland towards the deity on their way. That fell on the neck of <span style="font-weight: bold;">pattinaththar </span>who was meditating. The corps mistook him as the robber and the king without analyzing the facts ordered him to be executed on kazumaram (a sharp wood to pierce and kill). The <span style="font-weight: bold;">siddhar </span>sang en <span style="font-style: italic;">cheyaladhi yadhonrumillai </span>and reiterated his surrender to the <span style="font-weight: bold;">devadeva</span>. The <span style="font-weight: bold;">kazumaram </span>caught fire. The king realizing his potence and non-guiltiness pleaded for pardon and gave himself as the slave of the saint. <span style="font-weight: bold;">pattinaththar</span> ordered him to renounce the throne and go to thiruvidaimarudhur. The king became a sage called <span style="font-weight: bold;">baththira giriyar</span>. Then <span style="font-weight: bold;">pattinaththadikal </span>continued his to the northern abodes. on his return to <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvidaimarudhur </span>he showed liberation to his disciple <span style="font-weight: bold;">baththira giriyar</span>.<br /><br />meanwhile his headclerk chendhanar was donating tihruvenkadars wealth as per his order for charity. But the king triggered by the relatives reprimanded chendhanar. pattinaththar sang the lord and got him released. He went to chirkazi and composed the scripture <span style="font-weight: bold;">thirukkazumala mummanikkovai</span>. Sang the <span style="font-weight: bold;">koyil nanmanimalai </span>on the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Dancing King of thillai</span>. later worshiping <span style="font-weight: bold;">annamalai </span>he went to <span style="font-weight: bold;">kanychi </span>where he sang <span style="font-weight: bold;">kachchith thiruvandhadhi, thiruvekamba malai, kachchith thiruvakaval</span>. He prostrated to the lord, Who is present in all directions for the world to salute, at <span style="font-weight: bold;">thirukkazukkunram, thiruvalankadu, thirukkalaththi and reached thiruvorriyur </span>as directed by the lord at <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvidaumarudhur</span>. His experience of the God's Grace flow out as <span style="font-weight: bold;">mudhalvan muraiyidu, arutpulambal.</span><br /><br />one of the days when he stayed in <span style="font-weight: bold;">thiruvorriyur </span>worshiping the lord of sacrifices, he was playing with the cowboys. The boys used to cover him in a pit with sand and plants and he used to come out from altogether another pit !
