An interesting commentary on the Perry v. Schwarzenegger trial.

With the testimony in the Proposition 8 trial now closed, it’s time to consider: Which side will win? Will Judge Vaughn Walker find that California’s limitation of marriage to one man, one woman violates the U.S. Constitution? Legal doctrine affords both sides avenues for victory. It also generates landmines (arguments that could create controversy for Judge Walker) and lavender herrings (silly diversions that he would be wise to avoid).

I have found myself unexpectedly moved by Stephen Gately’s death. “Unexpectedly” because I wasn’t even a fan of his music. I think it’s a combination of (1) the fact that a 33-year-old, otherwise healthy, young man suddenly died just days before my own 33rd birthday; (2) that as an out gay celebrity he was a role model for the community, and we have so few of those; and (3) I have such sympathy for his surviving partner, Andy Cowles — I mean really, how awful for your husband to die while you’re just in the next room.

More details have emerged about Gately’s final hours, as you can read at The Daily Mail. Previous details painted an incomplete picture, and implied Gately had passed out in the bedroom while Cowles and a third fellow — whom the couple had invited — were in the bedroom. Actually Gately and Cowles were together for most of the night, with Cowles heading into the bedroom to sleep some more only late the next morning.

Today was Gately’s funeral in Dublin. My thoughts are with him and his family.

Actually, it’s not so funny. It’s hard to put my finger on it, but I think it comes down to, the humor feels like they’re laughing at us, not with us.

Brian Juergens at AfterElton.com stated it nicely:

Rampant dated gay stereotypes (hairdressing! fashion! lisps!)? Check. Predatory gay sexuality? Check. Straight white men running around beating gay men in the face with shovels as “comedy”? Check.

The thing is, these guys probably think that they’re being “irreverent” and “daring” by making this. Maybe they’re not homophobic at all. But if so, they’re also apparently too stupid or insensitive to realize that what they’ve created isn’t sending up stereotypes, it’s reenforcing them. And I honestly don’t know which is worse: a “filmmaker” who has a blatantly anti-gay agenda, or a “filmmaker” who is so utterly incompetent in the crafts of storytelling and satire that they don’t realize that what they’re creating is toxic crap.

In the comments, friday13fan has a similar but more measured reaction:

If they would have avoided the limp-wristed stereotypes for the zombies, it would have been more of a funny comment on straight paranoia–how many people think that people can actually be “converted” or what-not. Even more clever would have been to have parents locking their children in closets to protect them from the conversion (and stuff like that). Zombies are great for revealing the absurdity in all types of behavior. So, I don’t think Gay Zombies fails there, but it fails in that it doesn’t make explicit the absurdity of the stereotypical traits that it exploits. To me, guys necking with white makeup would have been enough to sell that they were gay! I think it’s a little hyperbolic to say that the filmmakers are utterly incompetent and creating toxic crap, but I do see where you’re coming from. They could have done much better.

The resulting picture is less suspicious, a little more salacious. I feel very bad for Gately’s husband Andrew Cowles.

Apparently, Gately and Cowles had gone out drinking while on holiday in Majorca. They came back to their room with a third companion, a Bulgarian named Georgi Dochev. Dochev and Cowles were in the bedroom while Gately passed out on a couch in the living room, where he suffered a pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs). Dochev discovered the body the next day.

From 365gay.com:

A post-mortem showed Gately, 33, an Irishman, died as a result of a pulmonary edema, or fluid in the lungs, the Balearic Islands Superior Justice Tribunal said in a statement.

His death is apparently unrelated to the drinking.

From ABC News:

“He died a natural death of acute pulmonary edema” which had nothing to do with any consumption of alcohol or drugs, the spokeswoman in the Majorcan capital of Palma, said.

In other words, stories that say Gately choked on his own vomit appear to be inaccurate, based on this information.

Andrew Cowles leaves court in Majorca after learning the autopsy results.

Gately’s death, especially under these circumstances, has understandably traumatized Cowles. (Edited previous sentence from original for clarity). He was literally just in the next room, with another man, while his husband died.

From The Daily Mail:

Last night Mr Cowles was said to be inconsolable. He told Gateley’s bandmates Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Mikey Graham and Shane Lynch, who flew out to the island on Sunday night, that he would never forgive himself.

‘I feel that my life is over,’ he said, according to the Daily Mirror. ‘We have had wilder nights out in Dublin and this was nothing out of the ordinary.

‘I just don’t understand it. What hurts most is that he was only yards from me in the room next door and I didn’t even know he was slipping away.

From The Sunday Times:

Boyzone singer Stephen Gately has been found dead at the age of 33, it was reported today.

Gately was believed to have been holidaying in Majorca when he died yesterday, according to a newspaper.

Boyzone manager Louis Walsh told the News of the World: “We’re all absolutely devastated. I’m in complete shock. I was only with him on Monday at an awards ceremony. We don’t know much about what’s happened yet.

The article goes on to say:

Gay singer Gately’s coming out ten years ago caused a sensation in the pop music world. He leaves a husband Andrew Cowles, who he married in a civil union in March, 2006.

Gately also became a star of theatre, TV and radio, appearing in the West End as Joseph in and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and in the ITV show Dancing on Ice.

Boyzone had 17 top five singles and four number one albums before splitting in 2000. They made a comeback tour in 2007, however their recent 19-date Better tour was deemed a flop as the band played to half-filled arenas.

A spokesman for Boyzone confirmed the death but details are yet to emerge.

503: Free To Be You and Me

Original Air Date: 24 September 2009

Overall: 3.5 / 5.0
Minor gay content (a joke about Bert & Ernie, a tad bit of heterosexism)

Summary: Dean and Sam have taken different roads. Dean agrees to help Castiel (Misha Collins) find the archangel Raphael (Demore Barnes), who maybe knows where to find God. Meanwhile, Sam tries to leave hunting and opt for a normal life.

I would describe this episode at interesting without any wow. Like a dutiful mule, it plowed multiple multi-layered storylines foward. That’s a fair achievement. But the story of the episode itself? Meandering, without a compelling storyline. It tried to make up for that fact with humor, but I found much of the comedy to be Trying Too Hard. I seem to be in the minority opinion here, though.

On the whole, it was an okay show, but I have the feeling that when the season is over, I will look back on this one as one of those “bridge” episodes. It propelled the overarching story (with Lucifer’s revelation to Sam; Raphael’s supposed revelation to Castiel/Dean; and the personal character arcs for Dean, Sam and Cas) forward, but without a strong story of its own.

I do recognize that I seem to diverge in perspective from a lot of the show’s fanbase in at least one respect. I just don’t care for the direction the show has taken. It offers fantastic acting, above average writing (typically), and really compelling relationships (particularly the evolving and constantly strained relationship between Sam and Dean). But this whole angel-versus-demon, heaven-versus-hell story arc? Meh. Okay, so that’s the story vehicle they’ve chosen for the acting, the writing and the relationships. Fine. But it leaves me cold, so it’s hard to get enthusiastic about episode plots that revolve around it.

Regarding gay content, a couple of minor comments. It’s pretty much neutral as far as gay positivity. One instance of heterosexism, which is negative, but it was minor.

First, Dean cracks a gay joke. He says one of the things he knows for sure is that Bert and Ernie are gay. Har-dee-har-har. It’s not gay negative or anything. But I thought it was pretty lame as a joke. Maybe it was the delivery; Ackles never seems very comfortable delivering gay jokes. He attempts another one (this time quite negative) in 305 (“Bedtime Stories“).

In the words of Maureen Ryan from The Chicago Tribune:

Sidebar: Bert and Ernie are no gayer than Dean and Cas. I’m just sayin’.

Regarding the heterosexism, well, apparently it might be Castiel’s last day on Earth, so Dean takes him to a whorehouse. Again, they were trying to be funny, and I suppose it was amusing. But also mildly annoying that there’s this presumption of heterosexuality, even among angels, whom Season 4 established to be asexual, per Anna’s comments to Dean.

504: The End

Original Air Date: 1 October 2009

Overall: 4.0 / 5.0
No gay content

Summary: The angel Zachariah sends Dean five years into the future, so Dean can witness the completion of the Apocalypse first-hand, in an effort to convince Dean to let the Archangel Michael take possession of him.

There’s a common expression, “The best trick the devil ever pulled was to make people believe he doesn’t exist.” I disagree with that. I think the best trick the devil ever pulled was to make us believe we’re not him. It’s so easy to disavow responsibility, to just say, “The devil made me do it.” Or some variant. So easy not to take responsibility for our own freaking choices.

Demons are the metaphor for our unwillingness to own our actions, to take responsibility, for our tendency to choose easy over right, money over right, power over right, sex over right.

And the result? Well, as Lucifer asks in this episode, in defending himself to Dean, “Look what 6 billion of you have done to this beautiful [Earth], and how many of you blame me for it?”

Probably my single favorite episode of Supernatural is Episode 220 (“What Is and What Should Never Be”), where Dean falls prey to a Djinn and gets lost in an illusory, utopian world. “The End” reminded me of that one, but in reverse: instead of utopia, Dean finds himself stuck in a dystopia. But this ep was smart where the other one was just fun. I loved how the unfolding themes and storylines were portrayed: the devastation wrought on future-Cas and future-Dean, the exchange between Dean and future-Lucifer, the exchange between Dean and Zachariah afterwards, and the final moment where Dean really did a learn a lesson – just not the one Zach wanted him to learn.

Full Sail University is conducting a survey about gaymers and gay content in games. According to the Informed Consent page, “This survey is designed to learn more about video game players.”

The student researcher, Paul Nowak, spoke with Joystiq.com about the survey.

Joystiq: A gay gamer survey has been done before, why do it again?

Paul Nowak: Since Jason Rockwood’s survey in 2006 was the first of its kind, it got stuck with the burden of proving to the academic community that the gay gaming community even existed. Now that he’s been successful at that, we can make a more in-depth study of what exactly gaymers want from their games.

What do you hope to learn from this new survey?

Ideally, I want to learn what exactly it is that gaymers want from their games and how that differs from their heterosexual counterparts. I’ll take that information to develop guidelines the industry can use when trying to make gaymer inclusive games that don’t become offensive or insulting to any gamer regardless of sexual orientation.

Read the entire interview at Joystiq.

Mike Fahey at Kotaku.com then picked up the story and added his two cents.

As for the survey’s motivation, I find myself a bit conflicted. I’ve just never thought of gaming as a pastime that sexual orientation figures into. Nowak makes a valid point about the industry’s stumbling first attempts at reaching a female audience, but are homosexual gamers that much different from everyone else that they need to be catered to specifically? I’m not saying they shouldn’t be…I suppose I am asking if they really want to be.

Read Fahey’s entire piece at Kotaku.

I find two of Fahey’s statements of particular interest.

First, “are homosexual gamers that much different from everyone else that they need to be catered to specifically?” His choice of language is interesting and disturbing. It sounds like the video game variant of the argument that gay rights are special rights. Second, he asks “if they really want to be.” And amazingly, there’s not a clearcut answer to this. There are gay gamers who couldn’t care less, and even gay gamers who sometimes express discomfort with gay content in games.

Joshua Meadows has written an eloquent article entitled, “Missing the point: why we need more LGBT visibility in gaming.” In direct response to Fahey’s statement, “As for the survey’s motivation, I find myself a bit conflicted. I’ve just never thought of gaming as a pastime that sexual orientation figures into,” Meadows writes:

Well no, Mike; as a presumed heterosexual male I guess that wouldn’t be something you’re likely to think of, given that the default sexuality is always straight, whether we’re talking about TV shows or movies or games. As a gay man, I didn’t come out once; I have to come out of the closet constantly because it’s assumed that I’m straight and it’s on me to correct that assumption, unless I want to make things easier by camping it up to such a degree that the assumption is changed to “oh yes, he’s got to be gay.” As an outlier to the default I am constantly face-to-face with how I am different, so “sexual orientation” is going to be a bigger deal to me in places it won’t matter to straight people and I’m going to notice the glaring lack of representation in places straight people didn’t realize something was missing. I would think that this is easy logic to follow but apparent it isn’t, since other gamers constantly wail about how it’s injecting something irrelevant into their particular hobby.

Meadows goes on to encapsulate why gay representation is important, even in video games:

Ultimately it’s just an issue of visibility. Gay characters (and explicitly stating that you, yourself, are a gay gamer) might be irrelevant to many or most heterosexual gamers (and sadly some gay ones; come on guys!) but it is still an elevation for awareness that has a very tangible effect on the people who see it. If one gay teenager living in middle America can look at such a representation, whether from video games or movies or TV shows, and feel less alone because they see themselves reflected in a way that seems “normal” and “okay” then that is a powerful accomplishment. If one straight kid sees the same thing and it changes how they react towards gay people for the better, it’s an improvement for our rights and treatment in a way that political lobbying will never match. That is why this stuff is important and why dismissals about it being irrelevant or out of line hold no weight.

Read Meadows entire op-end here.

As always, my favorite bits of these conversations are found not in the commentaries themselves, but in the comments they engender. (All comments below are from the Kotaku piece)

From Zhivagod:

I do not feel that a gay NPC would be relevant to any storyline unless the story is somehow sexually oriented.

Ed: Okay, when I said “favorite bits” I meant “the statements that madden me the most.” This comment is very common to all media, not just video games, but it adds an extra twist on the end. First, gay people don’t occur in real life where they’re “relevant.” They just exist. That’s like saying you’d only include a black person in a storyline if race was somehow relevant to the story, which is ridiculous and, in itself, racist. Then Zhivagod adds the sexualization bit, reflecting the perception of homosexuality as homeSEXuality. But being gay is a total, encompassing experience. It’s as much or more about affectional attraction and identity than sexual attraction.

From Showmeyomoves!:

So gay people are attracted to people of the same sex… Unless we’re talking about dating sims here, I don’t see how this would be relevant to videogames. Do gay people only watch gay movies, read gay books and listen to gay music?

Ed: Only? No. But sometimes? Yes. As Meadows states, heterosexuality is the default. By default, movies, books, music and games are all heterosexual, and heterosexuals take for granted just universal those media include explicitly heterosexual relationships. Heterosexuality does not just occur in dating sims. Why should homosexuality?

Trigger2 makes an excellent point along this line of thought, by pointing out games that offer het relationship options, but no gay options. (Emphasis mine)

there is a certain type of game where I find myself annoyed with the lack of choices – RPG’s and open-world “grow your own character” style games. In most of those games it quickly becomes obvious that heterosexuality is the ONLY choice.

For example: Saints Row 2 and GTA4. I found myself a little disgruntled that the majority of the options for your in-game personal life are strictly geared to str8 guys, even though both games flirt with the idea of gayness.

In GTA4, why not let Nico use the dating web-site to go on dates with dudes? Who cares? The fact that he could cruise the guys on the site on the computer but the game only let you date the ladies bugged me. I know Nico is “supposed” to be str8, but it actually would have made Nico MORE interesting to me if he could’ve hooked up with dudes on occasion. Why force the issue? If the gamer wants him to date only girls that’s fine. If the gamer wants him to be bi, that’s up to them. But to force the issue like that seemed a little harsh.

Saints Row 2 is alot of fun and gives you alot more freedom, which is why it was slightly annoying that when I upgrade my crib, suddenly there are pole dancing ladies in my crib, and girly posters and photos. It would have been a simple matter to be able to switch out the chicks with dudes etc. Or at least have made the pole-dancers and photos as separate upgrades.

The point is, when games start giving the player more and more freedom to customize, it quickly becomes apparent that the developers have designed all the options around the straight male.

Chagrin makes a good point:

Additionally, it’s easy to forget this if you’re not in a minority – even I tend to forget it, since I’ve moved beyond this as I’ve grown up – but a positive portrayal of a gay character can mean a great deal to a young guy or girl questioning their sexuality. Nevermind video games, there’s still a lack of gay role models in all media. It’s changed a lot, but not enough to wash out the taste of what came before it, really not all that long ago, where being gay in a film (for example) was at best a death sentence. Usually not without having been a lecherous, despicable villain to begin with. (I’m looking at you, Hays Code.)

And beyond all that, there’s a simple reason why it’s a good thing: storytelling in games could use improvement across the board. Nuanced plot, characters, themes.. how many times can we see characters lifted straight out of the Gears of War mold? I don’t mean that as a knock against that franchise, for which it works within the context in which it’s presented; but game developers could stand to broaden their concepts to eschew falling into the same patterns, the same accepted tropes, and produce works which explore different ideas.

So, I guess my point is.. why shouldn’t games be made with a potential gay audience in mind? Not necessarily targeted to them, but at least accommodating of them.
