Enid's Mennonite Relief Sale Starts Tonight

The annual Mennonite Relief Sale will be held at the Chisholm Trail Expo Center in Enid starting tonight, Friday, at 5 p.m. with a $7-a-plate pork loin dinner.

There will also be other food and snack booths open. The Shafer Gospel Quartet will perform at 6:30 p.m. and then several items will be auctioned from craft and quilt booths.

Stop by Saturday for the pancake and sausage breakfast from 7 to 9:30 a.m.. The cost is $5 per plate.

All booths open at 8 a.m. and at 9 a.m. the craft and miscellaneous auction begins. The quilt auction begins at 11 a.m.. Get out and enjoy some great food or pick up some snakcs for around the house.

Enid Loses An Icon

When you needed a Halloween costume you knew just where to go. When you wanted a funny prank gift you knew just who had the perfect item. When you wanted to rummage through an old vintage store you knew just the place.

Almost everyone in town has been to Papa Torry's at one time or another over the years. Sitting on Grand with the worst parking situation in town you knew you were in for a treat once you entered the store. There was Papa Torry ready to let you try on a Santa costume or help you find the right mix of make up.

I remember going in my younger years looking for prank gifts and fun little magic tricks. You could spend hours in the store and never see everything. It wasn't the biggest, it wasn't the brightest and it wasn't the most organized, but it sure was an adventure every time you went.

Papa Torry was an Enid icon with a name that was immediately recognized. He kept his vintage store open year after year even though many shoppers began buying from the bigger national retailers. You could always count on Papa Torry for the unusual and unique.

Charles Lipps (Papa Torry) passed away last Saturday Oct 31. He would have been 85 the next day. Fitting that he should die on Halloween since that was his busiest season and one of his favorite times of the year. His Celebration of Life service will be at Central Christian Church in Enid on Tuesday, Nov 10th at 2:00 PM.

RIP Papa Torry, you will be missed.

New Oklahoma Laws

Here are a few new laws that took effect on November 1st, 2009 in Oklahoma:

HIGHWAY

HB 1368 requires drivers on multilane highways to remain in the right lane unless they are passing other vehicles. It does not apply to those driving in the far-left lane because of traffic conditions or flow, or road configuration. (Thank you lord for this one! Stop driving in the left lane at 50 mph!)

CURFEW FOR TEENS

HB 1599 changes the teen driving curfew to 10 p.m. from 11 p.m.

LEMON LAW

SB 812 applies to new vehicles with less than 15,000 miles in the first year of ownership. A consumer who bought a defective vehicle would have the option of a refund or a replacement vehicle of a similar type. The legislation includes a formula for determining a lower price for vehicles with more than 15,000 miles. The vehicle would qualify as a "lemon" if the vehicle is in a shop for 30 business days for the same problem or if it's in the shop four times for the same problem in the first year of ownership.

Veterans Day Activities in Enid 2009

The Enid Veterans Day Parade and Program will be Saturday, November 7.

The parade starts at 10 a.m. with a fly over from Vance AFB & the parade route is around the square. The Veterans Day Program starts immediately after the parade at the gazebo on the north side of the court house lawn.

The council needs veterans to participate in the parade. Veterans wishing to ride in the parade in a vintage car or on a float should be at the parking lot west of Mark Price Arena at 9 a.m. on November 7th. Those wishing to enter a group or a float in the parade can contact Mike Hellman, 1-405-388-0275 (cell#).

The council needs the public to come down and participate in the parade and program. Mark your calendars now for Saturday, November 7, 10 a.m. Come downtown. Show your support for our veterans.

Enid gets to try the Braum's extra long chili cheese coney before anyone else! Starting today, Braum's will be test marketing the coney to see how well it sells in the three Enid stores. Based on sales and the response, Braum's will then roll it out to the rest of the country.

So Enid, get to Braum's and let them know what you think!

Coney's run $2.89 with fresh chili and cheese while a combo meal runs $4.85 (with medium fries and drink).

Halloween in Enid!

Wow Enid! There's lots going on this weekend! Get ready for some Halloween fun.

Friday:

Scare on the Square in downtown Enid
Scare on the Square is from 5 pm to 8 pm tonight in downtown Enid. There will be trick-or-treating along the sidewalks, a Halloween Queen contest, a spooky zombie parade with Count Gregor and many other fun things to do. Join in the fun and wear your scariest Halloween costume!

Skinner and Hopkins Kid Friendly Haunted House
Downtown at Scare on the Square. A fun haunted house that won't terrorize the kids. $1.00 admission.

Halloween Carnival
The National Guard Armory, 600 E. Elm, will have its annual indoor Halloween carnival tonight from 5:30 pm to 9 pm. There will be a costume contest, carnival games and concessions. Tickets are .25 cents each or five for $1.00. Proceeds go to the HHB 45th Fires Brigade Family Readiness Group to support soldiers and their families.

Nightmare Warehouse Haunted House
Nightmare Warehouse Haunted House starts tonight from 7 pm to 11 pm and also on Saturday. The warehouse is located at 424 W. Walnut. Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for 12 and younger. Portion of proceeds benefit EHS chorus.

Enid Farmers Market PumpkinFest
Enid Farmers Market is having a PumpkinFest sponsored by StarTek. The market is open from 8 am to 11 am and will have trick-or-treating for the kids. Bring your pumpkins for the PumpkinFest judging. There will be prizes for the biggest pumpkin, the best-dressed pumpkin and also a carving contest. Pumpkins must be there by 9 am.

Willow View United Methodist Church, 3525 W. Purdue, will hold its annual fall festival from 6 pm to 8 pm. There will be games, food, door prizes and candy. Wear your costume!

Trick-or-Treating
New Hope United Methodist Church, 614 N. Garland, will have a safe trick-or-treating event from 6 pm to 8 pm at the church.

Trunk-a-thon
Calvary Baptist Church, 9th and Broadway, will hold a trunk-or-treat event from 5 pm to 7:15 pm at the church. There will be candy, free food, a cakewalk and bingo. Free to the public.

Trick-or-Treating at the Oakwood Mall
Oakwood Mall will have indoor trick-or-treating for children from 6 pm to 9 pm. There will be treats, candy bags and coloring books.

Trick-or-Treating in the Pumpkin Patch
The Pumpkin Patch at Christ United Methodist Church, Randolph and Cleveland, will be hosting a fun trick-or-treat event from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

This Saturday is the Pumpkin Fest and the last Farmers Market of the season! This is an early reminder so you have plenty of time to sharpen your blades and hone your carving skills!

StarTec is sponsoring the event and passing out the moola for the biggest pumpkin, the best dressed pumpkin and pumpkin carving contest (carved prior to the event). The Market will have a little something for those children who planted pumpkins seeds at the Market in the spring.

Enid High School Traffic

EHS is looking at traffic pattern changes in the AM and PM. For the convenience and safety of students, pedestrians and drivers, Enid High School has implemented a trial program to help relieve traffic congestion before and after school.

Beginning this week, the 600 block of Wabash, just in front of EHS, will be one-way, eastbound between 7 and 8:30 a.m. and 2 and 3:45 p.m. Please contact the school office if you have questions about this traffic pattern change. They appreciate your support and cooperation.

Chester was born 11-20-08 and is a very playful guy. He is sweet and loves toys. Chester is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed/neutered.

All Dogs/puppies are tested for Heartworm if needed and placed on heartworm, they are de-wormed and vaccinations are kept current. Each animal will be spayed or neutered as soon as medically possible. The spay or neuter is included in your adoption fee, and will be done free as long as it is done in our facility. Many of our dogs live in Foster homes. You may want to call first before stopping by to make sure the dog you are interested in is at our facility. Our adoption fee is $65.00. Balloon Boys In Enid?

The Hedges family spent many years living on west Broadway in the Knox Mansion. There were three boys and one girl which made for many childhood adventures on west Broadway.

The latest story of the balloon boy in Colorado brought back a flood of memories for Brendan, the youngest of the Hedges clan.

Brendan remembers the time his older brother Craig and his friends made a balloon out of a large dry cleaning bag (70s-era), modified with a balsa wood frame to hold candles. Ruth Hedges, matriarch of the family, walked out onto the front porch (1323 W Broadway) just in time to see it lifting off and floating away. The family spent the evening chasing the contraption over Enid in their station wagon.

According to Brendan, "the balloon flight wasn't documented (by photos) unfortunately and came to an end in the railyard at the VanBuren overpass."

Brendan related this story on his Facebook account. I've also posted a video from the mid-70's that shows Brendan and his group of friends skateboarding and spending time playing at the mansion. You can view the video at this link... Vintage Enid Video

Thriller Reminder

SUGAR RUSH TO HOST THRILL THE WORLD EVENT
OCTOBER 24th, 2009

Sugar Rush will host Enids first ever participation in the Thrill The World event at its location inside Oakwood Mall on October 24, 2009 at precisely 7:30pm. Registration is $10 and all ages are welcome to participate. Zombie dress is suggested. There will be a Zombie Dance Party afterwards in the Sugar Rush Event Room. Participants are to meet one hour prior to the event to coordinate and practice as a group.

Thrill The World is a world wide, simultaneous thriller dance. This year we are going for a world record.

Enid's Own Kyle Dillingham to be Honored

Kyle is to be honored as a recipient of the Special Recognition Award at the 34th annual Governor's Arts Award, Tuesday, October 20th in the 4th floor rotunda at the Oklahoma State Capitol from 4 to 6 p.m. The public is invited. A reception will follow.

After receiving the award from Governor Henry, Kyle will move to the 5th floor balcony where he will join his newly assembled 12 piece orchestra to perform "Si Je Vous Embrasse," (If I Kiss You), to the gathered audience. Marie-Anne will join him in this exciting performance that is sure to attract statewide attention.

The air is crisp and the leaves are falling, it's Fall Break in Enid and there's plenty of things to do. This is a big football weekend around Oklahoma.

Head on over to Stillwater tonight for the World's Best Homecoming! There's is plenty to do and see at the OSU Walk-Around. See the decorations, play games and enjoy some food as OSU gets ready to play Mizzou.

It is also the Red River Rivalry game. Head to Dallas and the Texas State Fair for a fun filled OU/Texas weekend. There should also be plenty of watch parties going on around town for both games.

It's a great weekend to head over to the Pumpkin Patch and grab a few pumpkins. The corner of Randolph and Cleveland is filled with it's annual invasion of pumpkins just ready to be carved.

The Farmer's Market will open on Saturday morning at the corner of Grand and Garriott. Stop by for some home grown produce and more. Only a couple more weekends and the market will close until Spring.

This great old photo shows the aftermath of a hotel fire in Enid. The date of the picture is thought to be from the 20's or 30's. Do you recognize the hotel or the location of this building?

It looks as though there might be a barbers pole in front and possibly the word cafe on the window. Help us specify the location!

Partners in Education for Garber Public Schools

Partners in Education for Garber Public Schools are hosting a fall carnival to help raise money for their class rooms. They are inviting everyone to participate, including Enid residents to come out and have a great time.

There will be games, prizes, a chili dinner, petting zoo, hayrides, moon bounce, and a silent auction. There will be several great items up for bid including real miniature horse! The carnival is Saturday, October 24, 2009 from 6pm to 9pm and will take place at the Garber School in the large gym.

The funding is being used to purchase a digital marquee to place in front of the school and class room supplies to help take the burden off of the Garber teachers.
