Garfield County Election Board Secretary, Shari Monsees, said early voting is open to all registered voters. “You don’t need to provide an excuse to vote early. Oklahoma allows early voting for all elections conducted by the County Election Board or State Election Board – from school board and municipal elections to state and federal elections. This is a great option for those who will be out of town on Election Day or who want to avoid long lines,” Monsees said.

Early voting is available Thursday, June 11 and Friday, June 12, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, June 13, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Garfield County Election Board Office located at 903 Failing Avenue, Enid. Monsees reminds voters that early voting is not available at polling locations.

Some voters may need assistance to vote because they are blind or visually disabled, physically disabled or infirmed, or illiterate. Such individuals may request to have an assistant or vote privately and independently using the ATI device attached to the voting device. Those who require assistance should talk to the precinct official or contact the County Election Board directly for instructions.

For questions, please contact the Election Board at 580.237.6016 or email shari.monsees.ctr@elections.ok.gov. Please join the “Garfield County Election Board, Enid” Facebook page to stay informed on upcoming elections, sample ballots, candidate filings, and important dates.

ENID, OK (June 1, 2026) – Derrick G. Silas, Sr. Director of Communications

The City of Enid will begin startup operations and testing at the new water treatment plant on Chestnut Avenue this week as part of the City’s ongoing investment in water infrastructure and long-term reliability.

Over the next 30 days, crews will test equipment, treatment processes, and dosing using water from Kaw Lake to ensure the facility is operating properly and meeting all state and federal water quality standards.

The testing phase includes monitoring treatment performance, optimizing pumping operations, and overall system functionality before the plant becomes fully operational.

“This marks another important step forward for Enid’s water system,” said City Manager Jerald Gilbert. “The testing period allows staff to safely evaluate operations and ensure the facility is prepared to serve residents and businesses for years to come.”

Residents may notice increased activity near the facility during the testing period. City officials emphasize the process is controlled, monitored, and conducted in coordination with engineers and water treatment operators.

While this testing is underway, some treated water will be released into the drainage system—this is a normal and safe part of preparing the plant for full operation.

The discharge will be chemically free and safe to the aquatic life. The drainage will be through the normal water drainage systems.

For more information, call Engineering at: 580-616-7236.

ENID, OK - Spring in Oklahoma brings a welcome return to the outdoors. Hunters are preparing for turkey season, gardeners are planning their planting schedules, and landowners are thinking about how to support wildlife and improve their property for the months ahead. At Johnston Seed Company, we enjoy helping customers prepare for everything spring brings — from wildlife nutrition to lawn and garden success.

Turkey Season Excitement

Few outdoor traditions are as exciting as spring turkey season. Early mornings in the field listening for gobblers is a time-honored experience for many Oklahoma hunters. Healthy wildlife habitat plays an important role in sustaining strong turkey populations. Maintaining productive pastureland, food sources, and habitat areas supports both turkeys and other wildlife throughout the year.

Nutrition Matters for Deer Herds

While turkey hunters are focused on the woods and fields this spring, deer are also entering an important period in their annual cycle. After the stress of winter and the rut, deer need steady nutrition to regain body condition. Providing supplemental feed like Double Down Pen & Pasture deer feed can help support digestive health and deliver balanced nutrition during this transition period. Spring is also a great time to establish mineral supplementation sites. Minerals help support antler growth in bucks and overall health for the entire herd.

Getting Your Lawn and Garden Ready

Spring also means it's time to get serious about lawn care and gardening. Whether you're planning a backyard vegetable garden or improving your lawn, early preparation is key. Healthy soil, quality seed, and the right fertilizer program make a big difference in long-term results. At Johnston Seed Company, we offer a wide selection of:

• Lawn seed varieties
• Garden seeds and planting supplies
• Soil amendments and fertilizers
• Wildlife feed and mineral supplements

Our team is always happy to help you find the right products for your property. Spring is a season full of opportunity — and we’re here to help you make the most of it.

Stop by the store and let’s get your season started right.

Funds from the PSO Foundation are helping United Way of Enid & Northwest Oklahoma meet immediate and longer-term needs, including supporting volunteer staging and feeding operations, purchasing equipment and supplies for debris removal, and assisting residents as they navigate gaps between insurance coverage and rebuilding costs. The funding will also help address longer-term recovery needs such as housing assistance, trauma support, and rebuilding resources.

“While the cleanup has made incredible progress, we know recovery doesn’t end when the debris is gone,” said Dan Schiedel, executive director of United Way of Enid and Northwest Oklahoma. “This generous support from the PSO Foundation allows us to walk alongside homeowners for the long haul, helping bridge the gaps between insurance, short-term aid, and what families truly need to rebuild their lives.”

United Way of Enid and Northwest Oklahoma continues to coordinate with local agencies, nonprofits, and community partners to ensure relief funds are used efficiently and effectively to support impacted residents throughout the recovery process.

YWCA Enid announced today that Executive Director Courtney Dennis will step down from her role in late summer, with her final day of leadership set for August 28, 2026, following more than a decade of service to the organization, including six years as Executive Director.
The YWCA Board of Directors has officially opened the search for the organization’s next Executive Director. Interested candidates are encouraged to submit a cover letter, resume, and list of three professional references to YWCA Enid Board President Hannah Hankey at board@ywcaenid.com. Questions and requests for additional information may be directed to Hankey at 580-234-7581.

YWCA Enid’s programs and services will continue uninterrupted throughout the leadership transition, including emergency shelter, advocacy, prevention education, counseling, and support services for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

During her tenure, Dennis led the organization through a period of significant growth and strengthened impact. Under her leadership, YWCA Enid expanded programs and community partnerships, increased facility safety and security, elevated awareness of victim services throughout the region, and strengthened organizational operations and sustainability. Dennis also played a vital role in advancing statewide funding for victim services programs across Oklahoma.

“It has been the greatest honor to lead YWCA Enid,” said Dennis. “This work is deeply personal to me, and I am incredibly thankful for our dedicated staff, Board of Directors, community partners, and supporters, whose compassion and commitment make our mission possible every day. I am proud of what we have accomplished together and confident the organization will continue to thrive for years to come.”
Board President Hannah Hankey expressed appreciation for Dennis’s leadership and contributions to the organization’s long-term strength and stability.

“Courtney’s leadership has shaped YWCA Enid in meaningful and lasting ways,” said Hankey. “Her dedication to survivors, staff, and the broader community strengthened the organization at every level, from programs and partnerships to visibility and sustainability. We are grateful for her service and look forward to building on the strong foundation she leaves behind.”

If you or someone you know is experiencing sexual assault, domestic violence, or stalking, please contact the YWCA on their 24-Hour Crisis Hotline at 580-234-7644 to connect with an advocate today. You are not alone, and the YWCA is here to help. Hope starts here at the YWCA.

ENID, OK - May 11, 2026 - Oklahoma Department of Public Safety

The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Oklahoma Highway Safety Office, Oklahoma Highway Patrol and local law enforcement across the state urge drivers and passengers to buckle up for the Click It or Ticket seat belt safety campaign. The national high-visibility seat belt enforcement effort, which coincides with the Memorial Day holiday, runs from Monday, May 11th through Sunday, May 31, 2026.

"Seat belt use should be an automatic habit for drivers and passengers alike," said Lt. Chris Arnall of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. "During the Click It or Ticket campaign, we'll be working with our fellow law enforcement officers across local and state lines to ensure the message gets out to drivers and passengers. Not buckling up could mean a ticket, or worse, risking a life."

In the 2025 Oklahoma Seat Belt Survey, statewide seat belt usage was 85.3% which is significantly below the 2024 national seat belt use rate of 91.2%. Of the Oklahoma counties surveyed, only two counties reported use rates of 90% or higher. Six counties had rates below 80% with the lowest use rate recorded at 72%. The Click It or Ticket mobilization is a reminder that seat belts save lives. Participating law enforcement agencies will be taking a no-excuses approach to enforcing Oklahoma's mandatory seat belt and child restraint laws, writing citations day and night.

Buckle Up the Right Way

Place the shoulder belt across the middle of the chest and away from the neck.
Lay the lap belt across the hips and not the stomach.
NEVER place the seat belt behind the back or under arms.

"We are asking friends and family to remind each other to buckle up in the front and back seats and to consider changing their habits if they don't," said Lt. Arnall. "Seat belts save lives, and everyone — front seat and back, child and adult — needs to remember to buckle up for every trip, every time."

For more information on the Click It or Ticket high-visibility enforcement campaign, please visit NHTSA.gov/ClickIt.

WASHINGTON — May 6, 2026 - Karl D. Krahn, Public Affairs Specialist

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced the availability of low-interest federal disaster loans to Oklahoma businesses, private nonprofits, and residents to offset physical and economic losses from severe weather, tornadoes, and straight-line winds occurring April 23. The SBA issued a disaster declaration in response to a request SBA received from Gov. Stitt on April 30.

The declaration covers the Oklahoma counties of Alfalfa, Garfield, Grant, Kay, Kingfisher, Logan, Major, and Noble.

Businesses and nonprofits are eligible to apply for business physical disaster loans and may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace disaster-damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets.

Homeowners and renters are eligible to apply for home and personal property loans and may borrow up to $100,000 to replace or repair personal property, such as clothing, furniture, cars, and appliances. Homeowners may apply for up to $500,000 to replace or repair their primary residence.

Applicants may be eligible for a loan increase of up to 20% of their verified physical damage, for mitigation purposes. Eligible mitigation improvements may include insulating pipes, walls and attics, weather stripping doors and windows, and installing storm windows to help protect property and occupants from future disasters.

SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program is available to eligible small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, and private nonprofit (PNP) organizations — including faith-based organizations — impacted by financial losses directly related to this disaster. The SBA is unable to provide disaster loans to agricultural producers, farmers, or ranchers, except for aquaculture enterprises.

EIDLs are for working capital needs caused by the disaster and are available even if the small business or PNP did not suffer any physical damage. They may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable, and other bills not paid due to the disaster.

Interest rates are as low as 4% for businesses, 3.625% for nonprofits, and 2.875% for homeowners and renters with terms up to 30 years. Interest does not begin to accrue, and payments are not due until 12 months from the date of the first loan disbursement. The SBA sets loan amounts and terms based on each applicant’s financial condition.

“When disasters strike, SBA’s Disaster Loan Outreach Centers perform an important role by assisting small businesses and their communities,” said Chris Stallings, associate administrator of the Office of Disaster Recovery and Resilience at the U.S. Small Business Administration. “At these centers, our SBA specialists help business owners and residents apply for disaster loans and learn about the full range of programs available to support their recovery.”

Beginning Tuesday, May 5, SBA customer service representatives will be on hand at the following DLOC to answer questions about SBA’s disaster loan program, explain the application process, and help each individual complete their application. Walk-ins are welcome and in-person appointments can be scheduled in advance at appointment.sba.gov.

McKinley Elementary invites the Enid community to celebrate 100 years of learning at their anniversary celebration on May 8, 5-7 p.m. at McKinley Elementary.

Games and activities will be held in the gym as well as in the blocked off street of S. Lincoln to the west of the school. Food trucks will also be available for those attending at their own expense.

Roy Bartnick, principal of McKinley, expressed his excitement to spend this time celebrating the students, families, and tradition of the historic school site.

“The McKinley main building is an iconic structure in the middle of Enid,” said Bartnick. “It is a marker for the rapid growth Enid has shown as it was originally constructed on the outskirts of town. Over the past 100 years, McKinley has stood in witness of numerous state and national historic events while continuing to produce thousands of highly educated scholars.”

Many McKinley alumni will enjoy seeing the changes and improvements made to the school implemented in recent years including new playground equipment, a new awning over the outdoor walkway to the cafeteria, and overall updates to the 100 year old building.

Staff will be available that evening to lead visitors through the building if they wish to view more of the school.

ENID, OK - Spring in Oklahoma is one of the most exciting times of year for landowners, hunters, gardeners, and anyone who enjoys spending time outdoors. Warmer temperatures, longer days, and fresh growth signal the start of a busy season for both wildlife and property owners. At Johnston Seed Company, spring is one of our favorite seasons because it brings together several important priorities: preparing lawns and gardens, supporting wildlife health, and getting ready for the upcoming spring turkey season.

Supporting Deer as They Transition into Spring

As winter fades and green forage begins to return, deer are recovering from months of physical stress. Bucks are rebuilding body condition after the rut, and does are entering a critical period leading into fawning season. This is an ideal time to continue supplemental feeding programs. Products like Double Down Pen & Pasture deer feed help provide balanced nutrition and digestive support while natural forage continues to improve. Another key component of spring wildlife management is mineral supplementation. Deer begin replenishing nutrients lost during winter, and minerals play an important role in:

• Antler development
• Bone growth
• Reproductive health
• Overall herd vitality

Providing mineral sites near feeding areas or travel corridors can help support herd health throughout the spring and summer months.

Spring Turkey Season Is Just Around the Corner

Spring also brings one of Oklahoma’s most anticipated outdoor traditions — turkey season. As toms begin strutting and gobbling across fields and pastures, many hunters are already scouting and preparing.

Healthy habitat plays a major role in sustaining strong turkey populations. Maintaining productive food plots, pasture areas, and wildlife feeding sites helps create the environment turkeys need to thrive.

Lawn & Garden Season Starts Now

While wildlife is waking up for the season, it’s also the perfect time to begin preparing your lawn and garden. Early spring is ideal for:

• Soil preparation and amendments
• Planting garden seeds
• Fertilizing lawns
• Seeding pasture or forage areas

Our team can help you select the right seed varieties, fertilizers, and soil solutions to help your property thrive throughout the growing season. Whether you're preparing your backyard garden, supporting wildlife on your property, or getting ready for turkey season, Johnston Seed Company has the products and expertise to help.

Stop by and see us this spring.
