After the taxi driver threatened to kill me and asked me for all my money, I was certain of only one thing… I was not about to put his resolve to the test! At the same time, as a seasoned traveling veteran, I still had a couple of tricks up my sleeve… And he was not about to get all my possessions off me quite so easily.

So if you ever find yourself in a dangerous city on the road, here are some things you can do to protect yourself:

1. Have a decoy wallet on you. Keep your real wallet hidden somewhere, and carry a second wallet in your pocket in case you get held up. That way, you can show that wallet to the thief and hand over its contents (or heck, the entire wallet), without losing an arm and a leg (metaphorically speaking, hopefully!)

2. Keep your most valuable stuff in a money belt… things like your passport, your credit cards, and other important documents such as travel insurance papers. If you’re really savvy (or if you’re traveling in a really dangerous area), you might even have two money belts… With one of the two serving as a decoy (see item 1).

3. It’s also wise to make copies of all of your documents before you take off, or even better, scan them and save them online somewhere. That way, you can access them later to have them replaced quickly.

4. If you travel with a laptop or other electronics, you’re probably more concerned about losing the data on those devices than you are with their material value. I’m using a software called www.carbonite.com to keep an automatic backup of everything on my computer. Even if I should ever get jacked and lose my laptop, I’ll be able to restore all my files to a new computer instantly.

5. Distribute your valuables as much as possible. Don’t keep everything in the same pocket… If you have two backpacks, a jacket and a pair of jeans, put some of your money in each of those places. That way you might just lose part of your possessions.

6. Keep all important information handy in your email account, such as the phone number of your credit card hotline in case you need to have it blocked, as well as travel insurance hotlines and the number of your country’s embassy.

Since I take all these precautions, I was most worried about one item in my backpack that I did not want to lose at almost any cost… one item that was worth more to me than my money, my credit cards, my passport and my electronics. It was an item that would have been very difficult to replace: I was working my way from country to country as a musician at the time, and so I was carrying a large collection of music sheets with me.

After the taxi driver had picked up the contents of my decoy wallet and my decoy money belt, he told me to leave my bags in the car and run away. But since my music sheets were my livelihood, that was more than I was willing to give up… And I told him so, while maneuvering my bags between the two of us.

But then, something surprising happened… He agreed to let me keep my bags. I’m not sure whether he was worried that I’d fight him over the backpack, or whether he thought that he’d already gotten the jackpot with my money belt.

In any case, that was the end of our encounter, and I made my way to the next main street as fast as my feet would carry me. The first taxi driver I encountered asked me what in the world I was doing in this neighborhood… He said it was a dangerous area, and I shouldn’t be there. Haa… thanks for the heads up, mate! I told him what had happened, and he said it was a miracle that I’m still alive.

As it turned out though, what happened to me was not an uncommon occurrence in Nicaragua. At the border to Costa Rica, I ran into an expat who told me that there had been 400 similar incidences of Manágua cab drivers holding up passengers in the past two weeks alone. I have since learned to never travel in dangerous countries before the sun comes up… not even by taxi.

As I was sitting on the bus to San José, my next destination, I started to reconsider whether I really wanted to spend a lot more time in Central America. Despite having gotten off lightly, I was still a bit shaken up. Not the kind of adventure I’m usually looking for on my travels!

That said, I have found one common pattern with most of the problems I run into from time to time: in retrospect, it could have been avoided. I could have listened to my gut and not gotten into that old taxi. I could have waited until the sun came up to go to the bus station. Or I could have booked a ticket ahead of time, to get on one of those buses to the border right away.

So be safe on the road, and if you ever come out this way to Asia (where I’m currently traveling), you will find that safety is one of the greatest perks out here… There is practically no violent crime in most of these countries. It’s truly something amazing.

1. Children are ready to make mistakes

They do not think ten times before uttering a word or a sentence. Children take risks all the time. They do not like to be laughed at, but they soon forget that laughter can happen when they make a mistake. I love this specific forgetfulness (and forgiveness) kids have within them. We have so much to learn from these creatures. Without knowing it, children use the ‘trial and error’ approach all the time. They do not see a problem; they focus only on attempts. Very often we adults work in a very different way. We drag problems around with us and create obstacles that only suppress or limit our potential. When learning something, we have to watch that we are not our worst enemies.

2. Children accept correction

Although children throw tantrums to make their point or get what they want in many circumstances, when language is at stake they want to get it right. They pay attention to your correction and even repeat what you have said. Children are extremely clever. They do not really take note or care whether you are being arrogant or trying to be superior. They want to learn, which is the main thing to them. You see, children pay more attention to what is relevant. As we grow older, we become too aware of people’s way of saying things and their intentions and we get easily offended. It is too much thinking and precaution that spoils everything. When we get what we need, we grow; when we concentrate on how it could be or how wrong is being done, we simply do not enjoy learning.

3. Children love stories

We all love stories, but we tend to leave fiction behind as we grow older. What is offered to us is gossip with juicy details of the lives of celebrities and that is the closest thing to fiction and fantasy that we have. Children are more realistic when it comes to fantasy! They demand really impossible plots and amazing heroes. Kids want it all. No wonder the industry for this audience does so well. Now, the stories for kids are interesting for us not only because of the unlikelihood of their events and the characters that make us laugh. They present a simple language, yet sophisticated thoughts and great imagination. If you want to learn more English and invest in your writing, kids’ books are great tools: simple structures with lots of verbs (they need lots of action, you see!) and other new words. 4. Children learn all the time

We tend to be concerned with time for studying and methods to use. These concerns are important, but they can be real dampeners. When we think we have to plan too much our learning, the whole thing becomes a bit of a burden. Not that we should not plan; we just need to enjoy everything around as learning opportunities. Did you read the Brave monkey on the link above? A child would make connections with real life and reproduce what the monkey does and the way he responds to his challenges. When children are walking around, they point to things and sometimes we do not have a clue what they mean. However, they do. They are linking knowledge, characters and situations. The best way to learn is to do it all the time, because it is then just another moment, not a specific time to stop and learn. Children demand meaningful learning. Even fiction is applied when they use their toys to come up with a new story, having learned new things from animated videos or books. When we incorporate learning in our daily lives, everything makes more sense. It is not isolated knowledge here and there; it is ‘incorporating experiences’.

5. Children have fun

Among other activities, I looked after three kids here in Ireland for a good while. It was a dream job for those with a student visa, as I worked 4 hours a day from Monday to Friday with good wages and I loved it. Calvin, the oldest child, was way too smart and I had to be thinking ahead of him all the time. I can’t really tell you how much English I learned from him. Children are great teachers and the best thing is that they do not assess you! Calvin arrived one day from school saying to everyone, “I dare you!”. It was so much fun for him to be running around shouting ‘I dare you’. I could not help myself; he had me in stitches. Another day when I asked Calvin to get into the buggy and prepare to go to the park, he came with his newest expression, “No way!”. I decided to play his game and said, “Yes, way!”. At that point, he burst into laughter and said that ‘yes way’ did not exist. He loved it though. When we got back home from the park, the cleaner said to Cal that he was ‘not’ allowed to play near the ironing board. Guess what he replied, “Yes way!”

Enjoy learning as a child!

Uma das definições para “contexto”, do dicionário Aulete, diz o seguinte:

Contexto: aquilo que constitui o texto na sua totalidade; o conjunto dos elementos textuais em que se encontra uma palavra ou passagem, e que modifica ou esclarece o sentido desta.

Atenção ao que foi mostrado: o contexto “modifica ou esclarece” o sentido de um determinado trecho ou palavra. Sendo assim, precisamos dele para analisar o que é dito ou escrito.

Para que você entenda melhor como funciona na prática, vamos agora tomar como exemplo duas palavras em inglês: record e tear.

Record

Record: pode ser usado como verbo ou substantivo. Como verbo, significa “gravar”; como substantivo, pode significar “recorde” ou “disco”. Pergunta: você teria certeza do significado de “record” se o encontrasse assim?

“…records in Brazil and in the USA.”

No trecho acima, aparentemente fácil de traduzir, “record” pode ser tanto um verbo quanto um substantivo. Do jeito que está, realmente não há como definir com exatidão. Mas, com um contexto maior, temos definições mais precisas.

• Michael records in Brazil and in the USA. [Michael grava no Brasil e nos EUA.]
• The woman broke records in Brazil and in the USA. [A mulher bateu recordes no Brasil e nos EUA.]

É importante dizer que a pronúncia de “record” no primeiro caso é diferente de “record” no segundo. Os símbolos fonéticos comprovam isso: record (verbo) – [rɪˈkɔːd]; record (substantivo) – [ˈrek.ɔːd]

Tear

Tear: pode ser usado tanto como verbo quanto como substantivo. Como verbo, pode significar “rasgar”; como substantivo, pode significar “lágrima”. Vale dizer que a pronúncia também é diferente entre “tear”(verbo) – [teər] e “tear”(substantivo) – [tɪr]. Pergunta: você saberia definir o significado exato de “tear” se o encontrasse assim?

“…tear isn’t bad.”

No trecho acima, que parece simples, “tear” poderia ser interpretado de maneiras diferentes. Vai depender do contexto. Então, vamos elaborar dois entre os muitos possíveis.

• The book he wanted to tear isn’t bad. [O livro que ele queria rasgar não é ruim.]
• Shedding a tear isn’t bad. [Derramar uma lágrima não é ruim.]

Não para por aí…

Temos ainda outros dois exemplos interessantes, com “leave”(“left” no passado) e “go” (“went” no passado). Então, vamos a eles.

Tomando a sentença “he left the book at home” como exemplo, temos a seguinte tradução: “ele deixou o livro em casa”. Porém, sem um contexto, não dá para saber se ele deixou de propósito ou se deixou sem querer(esqueceu). Veja que ao ouvir esta frase, sem mais nada, você não tem certeza do que realmente houve, já que “left” pode ser usado nos dois casos. Confira os exemplos a seguir e veja como “left” pode se referir a “deixou de propósito” ou a “deixou sem querer”(esqueceu), dependendo do contexto.

• He left his book at home because he doesn’t need it today. [Ele deixou o livro em casa porque não precisa dele hoje.]
• He left his book at home again! He’s very forgetful. [Ele deixou o livro em casa de novo! Ele é muito esquecido.]

Ao ouvir ou ler o trecho “he went to New York”, o interpretamos como “ele foi para Nova Iorque”. Tudo bem. Não há nada de errado com esta tradução. Mas, aí vem a pergunta: “ele foi para Nova Iorque e já voltou ou ainda está lá?”. Bom, a resposta novamente vai depender do contexto, da situação envolvida. Ao usar “went“, pode ser que ele já tenha voltado ou não. Observe nos exemplos.

• He went to New York and came back yesterday. [Ele foi para Nova Iorque e voltou ontem.]
• He went to New York and he will come back on Saturday. [Ele foi para Nova Iorque e vai voltar no sábado.]

Voltando ao Fórum

Um dos principais motivos de reprovação de mensagens está relacionado ao contexto. Ou é insuficiente, ou não há nenhum, o que torna a resposta imprecisa ou a inviável. Frequentemente, nos deparamos com perguntas descontextualizadas, por exemplo, “qual o significado de ‘I take…?” ou “como dizer ‘faz muito‘ em inglês. Veja uma pequena amostra das inúmeras possibilidades quando não se fornece o contexto – apenas com os dois assuntos “I take…” e “faz muito”.

• I take the children to school. [Eu levo as crianças para a escola.]
• I take a trip. [Eu faço uma viagem.]
• I take a long time to eat. [Eu demoro muito para comer.]
• I take a look. [Eu dou uma olhada.]
• I take back what I said. [Eu retiro o que eu disse.]

• Faz muito tempo que não a vejo. [I haven't seen her for a long time.]
• Faz muito calor aqui. [It's very hot here.]
• Isto faz muito barulho. [It makes a lot of noise.]
• Você faz muito pão? [Do you make much bread?]
• Ele faz muito trabalho voluntário. [He does a lot of voluntary work.]

Pessoal, posso garantir que estes exemplos são apenas a ponta do iceberg. Eu poderia ficar o dia todo aqui imaginando outros exemplos de uso para “I take…” e “faz muito” e, mesmo assim, poderia não conseguir dar a resposta que o usuário procura, se eu não souber o contexto. Viram agora porque as mensagens sem ele são reprovadas?

Conclusão

Estudar ou praticar o inglês ou qualquer outro idioma sem um contexto, com palavras isoladas, é como dar um tiro no escuro: você não tem garantia nenhuma de que vai atingir os seus objetivos – de que vai entender ou ser entendido. O contexto dá vida a tudo que ouvimos, falamos, lemos ou escrevemos. Lembre-se sempre disso.

O objetivo do post de hoje é falar de um assunto que é uma dúvida muito comum entre estudantes do idioma, e que nem todas as pessoas (inclusive falantes nativos) concordam 100% a respeito. Então, vamos lá.

A pergunta que não quer calar é a seguinte: eu posso usar “forget” para dizer que eu esqueci alguma coisa em algum lugar, por exemplo, “I forgot my book at home”?

Bem, seguindo os padrões do inglês, a resposta é “não”. Você não deve utilizar “forget” quando mencionar o local onde tenha esquecido alguma coisa. Recorrendo a bons materiais como o Oxford, por exemplo, você encontrará esta recomendação. O verbo a ser utilizado nesse caso é “leave”, que ao pé da letra significa “deixar”. É importante dizer também que “leave” pode ser usado tanto como “deixar de propósito” quanto “deixar sem querer” (esquecer). Tudo vai depender do contexto. Vamos aos exemplos de uso.

I forgot my book at home. [Forma incorreta]
Eu esqueci meu livro em casa.
I left my book at home. [Forma correta]
Eu esqueci meu livro em casa.

I forgot my cellphone on the farm. [Forma incorreta]
Eu esqueci meu celular na fazenda.
I left my cellphone on the farm. [Forma correta]

I always forget my notebook at the mall. [Forma incorreta]
Eu sempre esqueço meu caderno no “shopping”.

Ainda respondendo a pergunta, apesar de “forget” ser contestado e considerado incorreto nos exemplos que acabamos de mostrar, alguns falantes nativos do idioma nos EUA e no Reino Unido dizem ouvi-lo ou usá-lo desta forma. Resumindo: para eles, as duas opções (com leave ou com forget) seriam possíveis.

Bom, apesar disso, o meu conselho é que, por via das dúvidas, seria melhor evitarmos “forget” no contexto “esquecer alguma coisa em algum lugar”. Com isso, você não corre o risco de perder pontos em provas ou exames de certificação, que costumam se basear em padrões (tidos como mais corretos) de gramáticas e de dicionários, como o que mencionamos, e também evita que alguém venha a te corrigir na hora que estiverem conversando.

Aliás, a expressão nip-and-tuck é usada coloquialmente para se referir à cirurgia plástica. Ao pé da letra seria algo como belisca e aperta…faz sentido.

Voltando ao vídeo, achei essa introdução muito interessante pois na nossa sociedade, tão preocupada com a aparência e a manutenção da juventude, nos esquecemos de uma parte importantíssima da cirurgia plástica, que é a cirurgia reconstrutora (reconstructive plastic surgery). Nesse caso temos vocabulário importante como:

• breast reconstruction – reconstrução de mama
• fixing  injuries after an accident – tratamento de feridas depois de um acidente

O outro lado da moeda seria a cirurgia plástica estética (cosmetic plastic surgery), que obviamente tem função importante, mas que acaba também sendo campo fértil para os exageros. O vídeo menciona breast augmentation (aumento das mamas) e liposuction (lipoaspiração), mas gostaria de acrescentar abdominoplasty (abdominoplastia) que é mais comumente conhecido como tummy tuck e rhinoplasty (rinoplastia – cirurgia no nariz) , o famoso nose job.

Olhem só a formação dessas expressões:

• Tummy = forma reduzida de stomach + tuck = comprimir, pressionar (lembra do nip-and-tuck?)
• Nose = nariz + job = trabalho

Interessante, não?

“Dame tu dinero! Dámelo todo o te mato! Tu sabes que es matar? Te mato… Dámelo!”

Unlike the day I ran into the meditator in my hotel in Chiang Mai, this was not just a misunderstanding… He had a knife at my throat, and from the crazed look in his eyes I wasn’t sure if he was an insane person, on drugs or simply incredibly violent by nature.

Apparently, my mum had been right… Traveling could be dangerous, at times. Of course I always take all the usual precautions… Avoiding dark areas in big cities, wearing simple clothes in dangerous countries, and never flashing money or any other valuables in public. But in twelve years of non-stop traffic in all corners of the globe, the law of averages can eventually catch up to one.

But let’s back up a bit… I had actually just spent a very pleasant week with my friend Graham in León, the capital of Nicaragua. Graham is a professional photographer from Seattle and a good friend of mine… He traveled from Alaska to Patagonia with his camera, taking breathtaking pictures of the landscapes and people he encountered on the way. After a week, I continued my trip to Managua, the capital of the country… While he stayed behind, waiting for a camera lens to arrive in the mail.

Unfortunately, Managua made a less friendly impression on me than León… And in fact, locals told us we should never walk the streets after dark. Downtown, it wasn’t advisable to wander around at all… Not even during the day, and not even in groups.

Apparently, gangs comb the streets in large groups… They carry machine guns and if you should be unfortunate enough to run into them, they won’t just take your money… They will take your clothes as well, leaving you to head back to your hotel naked.

Now, I consider myself relatively adventurous, but that’s just not my kind of place… So I got up at 4.30 am the next morning to be at the bus station before 5 and to buy a ticket for the 6 am bus to San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica. But no such luck… not only were the tickets sold out, there was also a long wait list. So I decide to take a cab to another bus terminal that would take me only to the boarder, and travel onward from there myself. And of course I decide to take a taxi, just to be safe… I don’t want to risk getting held up, right?

As I leave the bus station, I see a totally battered and messed up taxi and think to myself… no way, I’m not getting in THAT cab. I walk up to a nice, new taxi instead and chat up the guy standing next to it. We agree on a price, and he grabs my bag and throws it into the trunk… of the battered taxi.

For a second I thought about protesting, but there were no other drivers around, and I heard him calling out to the people selling food in front of the bus station. “Hey guys I’ll be back in a bit”, he said. So I figured if he’s part of the people working there every day, he should be fine to go with, and I hopped into the cab.

In all my years on the road, this must have been the worst car I’ve ever driven in. In fact it looked as if it had been on fire at one point. It was squeaking and screeching, and I just kept thinking… any moment now, this thing is going to fall apart. And that’s when it hit me… I suddenly had a very, very bad feeling about this situation. It was a very strong premonition… it was more than just the THOUGHT that something was wrong… I KNEW.

But the driver distracted me from my thoughts as he started to make small talk with me. He asked me where I was from, and what I was doing in Nicaragua? Something was off though… there was something NQR (Not Quite Right) about him, as the saying goes. And as I’m still thinking that thought, he pulls into a dead end street and gets out of the car…

I got somewhat nervous at this point, but as it turned out, he had just left the car to work on one of the wheels with some wire. Nevertheless, I decided to get out of this situation. I just didn’t trust him. I tried to open the door, but I found that it was locked from the outside… And it could not be opened from the inside of the car. Now, when I was 18, I had a car just like that, so I was quick enough on my feet to roll down the window to open the door from the outside. But it was still dark, and there were no people anywhere… and definitely no other taxis.

The driver noticed me opening the door and said: “Wait, just 5 minutes… please”. He sounded like he really didn’t want to lose me as a customer, and so I figured, hey – don’t be paranoid. People are very poor in this country, maybe I should really support this fella if he can’t even afford a better car. As I was still thinking these thoughts and with no other taxis in the vicinity, the driver returned to the car and we were back on the road.

The car wasn’t rattling as badly as before anymore… And it seemed like everything was cool. I breathed a sigh of relief, as we continued on our way to the bus station.

Not a minute later, he asked me where I was from a second time. That was the first time I started to think he must be some sort of crazy person… and next thing I know, he pulls over in a dark empty side street again and gets out of this car. Only this time, it wasn’t to fix the car. My window was still open, and so he positioned himself next to me, blocking the car door with his body so it couldn’t be opened, and put a knife to my throat…

And one thing I really need to learn to do better… is to keep my articles a bit shorter. This is about to turn into a book! So I’m going to have to leave the rest of the story for next time. I apologize for the cliff hanger, but I’ll write the conclusion of this story in just a couple of days, along with some tips on how to stay safe on the road. He did NOT get my money… so stay tuned for the next post, and I’ll tell you how I pulled that off.

Agora observe os exemplos de uso a seguir e entenda melhor como funciona.

• They lived in New York for a while. [Eles moraram em Nova Iorque por um tempo.]
• I’ll be fine in a while. [Eu vou estar bem daqui a pouco (tempo).]
• I’ll be back in a little while. [Eu volto daqui a pouquinho.]
• They walked back together, talking all the while. [Eles voltaram juntos, conversando o tempo todo.]
• We talked for quite a while on the phone. [Nós conversamos por um bom tempo no telefone.]
• The dog died a while ago. [O cachorro morreu um tempo atrás.]
• It takes a while to learn a new language. [Leva-se um tempo para se aprender um novo idioma.]

De forma alguma eu poderia deixar de lado a expressão “it’s been a while”, que é muito utilizada quando você encontra alguém depois de um tempo (razoávelmente) longo sem terem se visto. Confira o diálogo abaixo entre Mike e Mary.

Mike: Hi, Mary. It’s been a while! How are you doing? [Oi, Mary. Há quanto tempo! Como você está?]
Mary: I’m doing good, Mike. Thanks for asking. [Eu estou bem, Mike. Obrigada por perguntar.]

Vale lembrar que “while” não é usado apenas em relação a período de tempo – há outras formas de utilização tão importantes quanto a de hoje. Mas, isso é assunto para outra ocasião.

• You look tired. [Você parece cansado.]
• They looked happy. [Eles pareciam felizes.]

Bom, agora que já falamos um pouco a respeito de look (verbo), vamos ao assunto principal do post de hoje, que é falar de look sendo usado como substantivo. Para começar, saiba que como substantivo, look pode significar olhar, olhada, aspecto, aparência e visual. Observe que look pode ser usado no plural (looks) quando o sentido é “(boa) aparência”, “(bom) visual”. Vejam então como tudo funciona na prática.

• I think it was a look of surprise. [Eu acho que era um olhar de surpresa.]
• She gave me a strange look. [Ela me deu uma olhada estranha.]
• They liked the look of the hotel, but it was too expensive. [Eles gostaram do aspecto do hotel, mas era caro demais.]
• Fiona’s got everything – looks, money and youth. [Fiona tem tudo: boa aparência, dinheiro e juventude.]

Além dos exemplos mencionados anteriormente, existem expressões idiomáticas úteis como “take a look” (dar uma olhada, conferir) e “by the look(s) of it” (pelo que parece).

• The neighbours are back from holiday by the looks of it. [Os vizinhos estão de volta das férias, pelo que parece.]
• Take a look at them. [Dê uma olhada neles.]

Por falar nisso, ao escrever este post, me lembrei de uma música do grupo Roxette, “the look“, que fez muito sucesso na década de 80. Confiram um trecho.

”She’s got the look (she’s got the look)
She’s got the look (she’s got the look)
What in the world can make a brown-eyed girl turn blue
When everything I’ll ever do I’ll do for you
And I go la la la la la
She’s got the look”

A expressão “she’s got the look” não é muito precisa e pode ser interpretada de formas variadas, como: “ela tem o visual que agrada, que surpreende, que está na moda, que chama a atenção etc.” É sempre bom estar atento ao fato de que ao estudar inglês com música, vocês vão perceber que muitas vezes pode haver mais de uma tradução para os termos e expressões utilizadas nas letras.

Phrasal verbs

Como costumo dizer para os meus alunos, vamos por partes, sem afobação. Pensando dessa forma hoje iremos focar nos phrasal verbs com o verbo “to come”.

O verbo “to come” significa vir, mas quando combinado com uma preposição, formando um phrasal verb, pode ganhar significados bem distintos. Vamos ver alguns:

• Come Across: to meet or find by chance [Encontrar ou achar por acaso]

Ex:  I came across my History teacher at the mall this afternoon. [Eu encontrei por acaso o meu professor de História no shopping hoje à tarde.]

• Come Into: to acquire, especially as an inheritance [Adquirir, especialmente como herança]

Ex: He came into a fortune after his uncle’s death. [Ele herdou uma fortuna depois da morte do seu tio.]

• Come Out: to become known [Tornar-se conhecido]

Ex: The true story came out after she passed away. [A história verdadeira  tornou-se conhecida depois que ela morreu.]

Observe que nessa frase temos mais um phrasal verb que é muito comumente usado: to pass away = to die. Seria o falecer do português, fica mais ameno do que usar morrer.

• Come Over: to pay a casual visit [Fazer uma visita casual]

Ex: Can you come over tomorrow for a couple of beers? [Você pode vir na minha casa amanhã para uma cervejinha?]

• Come Up: to rise upon the horizon [Se erguer sobre o horizonte]

Ex: The sun came up at six this morning. [O sol se levantou às seis essa manhã.]

• Come Along: show up, appear [Dar as caras, aparecer]

Ex: The new secretary hasn’t shown up for two days. [A nova secretária não aparece há dois dias.]

Então, seis phrasal verbs (sete considerando o “pass away”) para você adicionar à sua lista.

Vamos começar lembrando que o “but” tem duas funções. A primeira e mais conhecida é de conjunção coordenativa, o que significa que ele liga duas orações que, sozinhas, têm sentidos completos. E, como ligamos duas orações com o “but”, antes dele, usa-se a vírgula:

• He wants to swim, but it’s very cold now. [Ele quer nadar, mas está muito frio agora.]
• She was here, but she could not wait for you. [Ela estava aqui, mas não pôde esperar por você.]

Ainda como conjunção, “but” pode ligar dois termos de igual função para contrapô-los:

• We are tired, but happy. [Estamos cansados, porém, felizes.]

Por ser uma conjunção, há quem diga que não se deve iniciar uma frase com “but”. Os mais puristas veem isso como erro. Não é exatamente errado, contudo, tenha em mente que há outras formas de se iniciar uma frase e evite abusar de “but” no começo. Uma dica é usar substitutos, como “however“, no início da frase.

• She was here. However, she could not wait for you. [Ela estava aqui. Contudo, não pôde esperar por você.]

Outra função menos comum que a palavra “but” exerce é a de preposição que mostra uma exceção. Funciona como a preposição “exceto”. Veja:

• I saw everybody but John there. [Vi todos lá, menos o John.]
• They did nothing but argue all night long. [Eles não fizeram nada além de discutir a noite toda.]

• I have my hair cut once a month. [ Eu corto meu cabelo uma vez por mês. ]

Significa que eu vou ao barbeiro/cabeleireiro e ele corta meu cabelo.

• I have the shopping delivered on Saturdays. [ Eu entrego as compras aos sábados. ]

Significa que eu contrato  alguém para entregar para mim.

Então, tenha em mente a regra básica de formação para o presente: pessoa + have + objeto + past participle do verbo.

Como vocês puderam ver nos casos acima, eu não faço o serviço, quem faz é outra pessoa. Se eu mesmo fizer o serviço, não é preciso o uso de “have”. Vejam como fica, então.

• I deliver the shopping on Saturdays. [ Eu entrego as compras aos sábados. ]
• I cut my hair once a month. [ Eu corto meu cabelo uma vez por mês. ] Obs.: É improvável que você corte o seu cabelo, isso pode até ser possível, mas é bem raro.

A forma no passado é feita com “had”. Para dizer que você mandou alguém fazer alguma coisa e a tarefa já foi concluída, faça uso de: pessoa + had + objeto + past participle do verbo.

• We had the TV fixed. [ Nós mandamos consertar a TV. ] [A TV já foi consertada.]
• She had the letter sent. [A carta já foi enviada.] [ Ela mandou enviar a carta. ]

Se a ação está acontecendo ou ainda vai acontecer, você pode utilizar “having”. Com isso, ao usar o “having“, há dois sentidos, que devem ser interpretados de acordo com o contexto. Observem os exemplos abaixo, que trazem duas das traduções possíveis e mais relevantes.

I’m having a house built.
1. Eu mandei construir uma casa. [Eu preparei tudo e a casa está sendo construída.]
2. Eu vou mandar construir uma casa. [Eu vou preparar tudo e a casa vai ser construída.]

I’m having the shower fixed.
1. Eu mandei consertar o chuveiro. [Eu arrumei alguém e o chuveiro está sendo consertado.]
2. Eu vou mandar consertar o chuveiro. [Eu vou arrumar alguém e o chuveiro será consertado.]

We’re having our house renovated.
1. Nós mandamos reformar nossa casa. [Nós contratamos as pessoas e a casa está sendo reformada.]
2. Nós vamos mandar reformar nossa casa. [Nós vamos contratar as pessoas e a casa vai ser reformada.]

Esteja atento ao fato de que neste caso a regra de formação é ”pessoa + to be + having + objeto + past participle do verbo“.

E como esse assunto é talvez até mais importante para os iniciantes, vou escrever o artigo de hoje em português. E eu ainda lembro muito bem quando eu era iniciante, e quando comecei a aprender a minha primeira língua estrangeira. Hoje, aprender um novo idioma não é mais aquele mistério para mim… Eu sei o que eu preciso fazer para tornar-me fluente num novo idioma. Só que nem sempre foi assim.

Eu cresci numa cidade muito pequena no interior da Europa… Uma cidade de apenas doze mil habitantes. E falava apenas um idioma. Nunca consegui imaginar a vida fora daquela cidade. E foi só por causa dos idiomas que depois eu tive as oportunidades de viajar, de trabalhar em outros países, e de fazer amizades com pessoas de várias culturas ao redor do mundo.

Minha primeira língua estrangeira: o inglês

Em 1990, eu aprendi a minha primeira língua estrangeira: o inglês. E como muitos, a aprendi numa escola pública. Uma escola que ensinou segundo o típico método tradicional que demora anos e anos. Nenhum dos meus professores era falante nativo, a gente tinha poucas aulas por semana. E as aulas não eram muito eficientes. Eu não conheci estrangeiros para praticar com eles, e na época nem existia a internet ainda para estudar em casa.

Muita gente reclama que demora cinco anos para aprender um idioma. Mas eu só fiquei fluente em inglês depois de oito anos mesmo!

Como a minha vida mudou

Ai, um dia aconteceu uma coisa que mudou a minha vida para sempre. Eu encontrei alguns amigos da minha família… Amigos de Guaiaquil, a maior cidade no Equador. E o Equador sempre me fascinou bastante… Eu sempre adorei ouvir as histórias que eles me contaram, do eterno verão, das praias maravilhosas, da comida, e das festas com Salsa, Cumbia e Merengue. Fiquei com muita vontade de conhecer o Equador… Mas então eu tinha que aprender espanhol também.

Eu fiquei com receio e pensei “aprender mais um idioma, vai demorar mais oito anos”. Isso me desanimou bastante. Eu queria conhecer o Equador naquele momento e não oito anos mais tarde! Mas eu estava motivado… E por isso decidi que iria achar um jeito de aprender espanhol, e rapidamente. E como o meu pai ainda tinha um curso de idiomas dos anos 70, eu comecei a ler esse curso, e comecei a estudar espanhol como autodidata.

Meus mentores

Inicialmente, o meu progresso foi muito lento, da mesma forma que tinha sido com o inglês. Mas eu tive a sorte de conhecer duas pessoas que acabaram me guiando nesse caminho. Um deles era o dono da livraria da minha cidade. Ele era um craque com livros e sabia tudo sobre cursos de dúzias idiomas. Por isso, ele conseguiu me explicar como escolher um bom curso e me indicou um curso de espanhol que era bem melhor do que aquele antigo curso do meu pai.

O outro mentor que eu conheci naquela época foi um professor chinês. Ele tinha passado os últimos 25 anos estudando a moderna ciência do cérebro. Colaborando com institutos na Itália, na Alemanha e na França… E sempre fazendo a seguinte pergunta: Qual é mesmo a diferença entre um gênio e uma pessoa normal? Já que cada ser humano tem o mesmo número de neurônios… Como é que qualquer pessoa pode aprender a utilizar o seu cérebro do mesmo jeito que um gênio o faz naturalmente?

Alguns anos mais tarde, eu conheci o Brasil. Na época, eu toquei numa banda que fez uma turnê pelo sul do Brasil, e a gente tocou em muitas cidades no Rio Grande do Sul, no Paraná e em Santa Catarina. Mas também chegamos até São Paulo e o Rio de Janeiro. E me apaixonei pelo Brasil. Até hoje, depois de ter viajado o mundo inteiro várias vezes, é um dos meus países favoritos. Talvez até mais do que o Equador.

Então voltei a falar com o dono da livraria que me explicou como escolher um bom curso de português, e combinei as dicas dele com todas as coisas que tinha aprendido do meu professor chinês. E assim, consegui aprender português em apenas oito meses. E é óbvio que o meu português não é perfeito… Mas depois de estudar por seis meses com um livro e um CD, além de mais dois meses de imersão, consegui manter uma conversa com brasileiros, já entendi tudo e até comecei a usar mais gírias.

Mais um desafio

Depois de alguns meses no Brasil, eu decidi que também queria conhecer a Ásia, e não apenas América do Sul… E por isso resolvi falar com meu professor chinês, e perguntar se ele tem algumas dicas para mim. E esse telefonema foi mais um daqueles momentos que mudaram a minha vida completamente. Pois ele me chamou para morar na Indonésia, onde ele tinha uma escola. Só que ele me convidou sob uma condição: Eu tinha que aprender Bahasa, o idioma da Indonésia. O meu prazo era de apenas 4 meses.

Eu acho que o segredo da motivação é simplesmente saber POR QUE a gente quer alguma coisa… E a minha motivação era forte. Eu comecei a estudar por uma hora, todos os dias, e consegui cumprir a condição do meu professor. A partir desse momento, idiomas não eram mais um mistério para mim. Agora eu sei que aprender idiomas pode ser bem mais fácil do que a maioria das pessoas acham, e no final eu acabei aprendendo 8 idiomas diferentes.

Eu vou contar um pouco mais sobre os outros idiomas que eu aprendi no meu caminho num dos próximos artigos, e também vou te dar algumas dicas para acelerar os seus estudos também.

Another difference is in vocabulary. For example, an elevator in America is called a lift in Britain. In America they walk on sidewalks, in Britain it’s pavements. In America many children eat a lot of candy, in Britain they eats weets.

But, what you might not know is that British English also has a lot of idioms which are not used in American English at all. Here are ten examples.

1. it’s not cricket - it’s not fair [não é justo] (cricket is a sport played in England and former British colonies like India and Australia)

It’s just not cricket for a teacher to allow a student to cheat in an exam! [Não é justo um professor permitir que um aluno cole numa prova!]

2. to take the mickey out of/to take the mick out of - to mock/tease [tirar sarro de alguém]

I love taking the mickey out of my friends, and they do it to me too. [Adoro tirar o sarro dos meus amigos, eles tiram de mim também.]

3. to leg it - to run away quickly [ir embora rápido, "vazar"]

The police are here. Let’s leg it! [A polícia está aqui. Vamos embora! ]

4. a big-girl’s blouse - a man or boy who is a wimp or soft [pessoa "mole", "bundão", "fresco"]

Stop being such a big-girl’s blouse, it’s not that cold today. [Pára de ser fresco, não está tão frio hoje.]

5. Sod off! / Naff off! - Go away, get lost! [Some! Sai daqui! Sai da minha frente!]

I don’t want to talk to you, just sod off! [Não quero conversar com você, some da minha frente!]

6. to duff up - to beat up [agredir, bater]

My friend got duffed up near the train station last night. That area is really dangerous. [Meu amigo apanhou perto da estação de trem ontem à noite. Aquela região é muito perigosa.]

7. to be as sick as a parrot - to be irritated with or tired of something [estar de saco cheio de algo]

I hate my job, I’m as sick as a parrot. [Odeio meu emprego, estou de saco cheio.]

8. to not give a monkeys / to not give a toss - to consider something unimportant [não dar a mínima para algo]

I didn’t watch the football last night; I don’t give a monkeys about it to be honest. [Não assisti o jogo de futebol ontem à noite; não dou a mínima, para ser honesto.]

9. to have the guts to / to not have the guts to - to be brave enough to do something/not be brave enough to [ter coragem de fazer algo / não ter coragem de fazer algo]

I had the guts to ask Kamila out, but she said ‘no’. [Tive coragem de convidar a Kamila para sair, mas ela recusou.]

10. there’s nowt so queer as folk - ‘there’s nothing as strange as people’ [as pessoas são estranhas] (this is more of a proverb than an idiom)

I don’t understand some people sometimes; there’s nowt so strange as folk. [Não entendo as pessoas às vezes; as pessoas são estranhas.]

Como disse anteriormente, “that” pode ser omitido. O primeiro exemplo pode ser escrito da seguinte forma “It seems he’s busy”.

Agora, vejam trechos com “it seems (that)”, retirados de publicações do Yahoo Voices USA.

• It seems Obama is learning how to get things done. (Parece que Obama está aprendendo a fazer as coisas.]
• It seems that Brazil expects to win the World Cup. (Parece que o Brasil espera vencer a Copa do Mudo.)

Observe ainda que o passado é feito com “it seemed (that)” e equivale a “parecia que”. Vamos aos exemplos:

• It seemed that Freeman had seen the man. [Parecia que Freeman havia visto o homem.]
• It seemed the car was going there. [Parecia que o carro estava indo para lá.]

A matter of being digital

I have learned recently, and it should not come as a surprise to me, that there is a term to describe my position in the digital world: I am a digital visitor! That means I was born before internet invaded the world. Indeed. (One more detail in life to make me feel a bit old.) If you are 17 years old or under you are a digital native (people born between 1996 to the present). With some more investigation, I mean, navigation, I found other terms for the digital natives: generation z, generation y, millennials, the net generation, the pluralist generation… (from netlingo.com)

Who misses what?

I feel a bit sorry for the teens today who do not know how things were before. Actually, even those in their early twenties do not remember much of those times. They will never know what the world was like without a desktop, laptop, iPad and whatever else is out there now.

However, I am not fully convinced that they would like to experience non-digital life, even if it was just for a day. They are digitally safe. Why bother?

When we have never experienced different things we cannot compare them. And even when we can compare, many times, this comparison is not a fair deal. Times change, and so do people. Technology changes and so does the way to do things.

As for me, I feel privileged to live with the two worlds in my mind. Many experienced a world in which they never had the slightest idea of what a digital life was; others live now in a world impossible to be thought of as a non-digital place. I carry both worlds with me.

Learning pre and post-internet

When I started my English learning, I only had a book and I would spend almost all my pocket money buying magazines with lyrics of songs to learn the words and sing along. My teen years were filled with songs meticulously rehearsed and desperately sung.

There were no sophisticated resources in the classroom either: the book, me, the teacher and the blackboard. And that was all I needed for that new adventure at that time. Little did I know how long that journey would be. I will never forget being introduced to the English language. On the first page of my English book, I was presented with my first sentences in English: ‘Hello, my name is Michael Jackson. I am a singer.’ ‘Wow’, I thought, contemplating the picture and the speech balloon coming out of the singer’s mouth.

The interaction is the real deal

I loved my English teachers. I remember them all by name and this is very much due to their encouragement and for their being there to share with me a portion of their ‘English world’. Without so many distractions, I believe, we could focus more on each other. What I felt for the teachers was gratitude and great respect; they instilled in me great curiosity. If I could, I would bring them with me in my schoolbag for us to continue our classes at home.

Fast forward 10 years and I was myself in front of a group, teaching. I now had so many resources that I did not need to speak very much. The equipment and devices would do the job for me. Obviously, my background would not allow me to deprive students of such a great experience that the interaction of teacher and student should be.

What remains

The resources are even more advanced now, but interaction is still the most important element to build and cement knowledge. No matter how modern the devices and possibilities become, and also how digital we become, our basic needs as learners remain the same. We all want to mingle with others, learn from them and for them, test, try, vary, challenge our minds, correct and be corrected (not always with humility, unfortunately).

Yet, we all have different approaches to internet and social media.

Imediatamente eu perguntei – Não é Take your camera?

Ele ficou indeciso e respondeu dizendo que tanto faz. Para quem quiser saber a diferença, veja aqui no fórum: “Take X Bring X Get“.

Com isso, tive a ideia de compartilhar uma leitura que fiz, sobre a “evolução” do idioma.

Muita vezes ficamos horas e horas estudando a gramática, levando ao pé da letra tudo que aprendemos. Sem nos dar conta que não é bem assim o verdadeiro inglês e muito menos no português. Não estou falando que devemos deixar de aprender a gramática, isso não, mas sim, observar a gramática de uso, o inglês falado.

O discurso jornalístico deve ser escrito na norma padrão, o discurso acadêmico deve ser escrito na norma padrão, mas o discurso literário, não precisa ser necessariamente escrito na norma padrão e assim acontece no Spoken English.

E estão acontecendo muitas coisas no inglês nos últimos anos. As contrações gonna, gotta, wanna que eram usadas apenas como gírias estão sendo usadas frequentemente em música, tv, rádio etc. E fora dos EUA você também encontrará essas palavras. No Canadá, Austrália, Havaí… E não são mais evitadas.

Da mesma forma que a humanidade evolui e se modifica com o passar do tempo, a língua acompanha essa evolução e varia de acordo com os diversos contatos entre os seres pertencentes à comunidade universal. Muito mais agora com a tecnologia que nos aproxima ainda mais.

Abaixo, seguem alguns exemplos que eu notei muitas vezes que tradicionalmente são usadas na forma simples, e agora estão sendo usadas na forma progressiva com mais frequência, talvez, significando uma mudança na gramática. (?)

• I’m not seeing him.
• The kids are loving their new game.
• What they’re needing is more money.
• I just wasn’t understanding…

O had na frase had better está desaparecendo:

• You better read it before signing.
• He better take a decision.
• You better stay home tonight.
• You better be quiet.

Está se tornando cada vez mais comum escutar a o pronome de objeto direto usados como sujeito na frase. Segue alguns exemplos:

• Him and my sister did it.
• Me and her were the only ones at home at the time.
• Them and their parents were told to make appointments to see the doctor.

Vocês podem pensar que esses exemplos foram de não nativos, certo? Bem, surpresa! Todos foram falados por gente que fala muito bem inglês, até mesmo professores nativos, que falam inglês.

O idioma está evoluindo, então temos que evoluir também. Muitas escolas de inglês ainda focam na gramática normativa, com tabelas e mais tabelas de regras maçantes gramaticais.

Foque seus estudos na gramática de uso, no dia a dia. Assista filmes, leia muito, e pratique conversação com um professor ou amigo que já fala inglês. Só assim o idioma fluirá.

Não se preocupe (tanto) com a gramática. É essencial, eu sei, porém, o que importa é se comunicar.

Considerando o meu hábito, esse ano me chamou muito a atenção o filme que concorreu ao Oscar de melhor filme: O Lado bom da Vida. Em inglês o título é “The silver lining playbook”. Confesso que de primeira não entendi o título muito bem. Já conhecia a expressão “every cloud has a silver lining”, que ao pé-da-letra seria algo como “toda nuvem tem um forro de prata”, ou seja, mesmo no que aparentemente é negativo podemos ver o lado bom, encontrar a esperança, e o “silver lining” é exatamente isso, o lado bom das coisas, a esperança. Contudo, não conhecia a palavra “playbook” e procurando no dicionário achei a explicação de que seria algo como um manual de regras do esporte, mais comumente do futebol. Aí o título começou a fazer sentido para mim, algo como “Manual de estratégias para ser positivo”, bem, melhor ficar com “O Lado Bom da Vida”.

Ainda há outros filmes que gostaria de destacar, também indicados ao Oscar desse ano:

• “The sessions“ com Helen Hunt, que em português é “As sessões”, no caso do filme, as sessões de terapia. Até aí nada de mais, mas queria ressaltar que assim como no português é comum as pessoas confundirem “sessões” com “seções”, o mesmo pode acontecer com o inglês com “sessions” e “sections”. Fiquem ligados!
• “Django Unchained”, o faroeste do Tarantino ficou em português Django livre, “chained” seria acorrentado e, por conseguinte “unchained” seria o seu oposto. Quanto ao Django tive que fazer uma pesquisinha e achei o Django personagem de muitos “spaghetti western”, aqueles filmes de faroeste da década de 60 e 70 cujos diretores eram na sua grande maioria italianos. Achei também o nome de Django Reinhardt, músico e compositor de jazz. Bem, acho que Tarantino quis fazer uma dupla homenagem.

Acho que podemos aprender muito com títulos de filmes e gostaria de mencionar três outros:

• “The Green Mile” – Filme de 1999 com Tom Hanks,  baseado no livro do Stephen King, que foi traduzido por “À espera de Um Milagre”. Na verdade o título faz uma referência ao percurso que um prisioneiro tem que seguir antes de ser executado numa penitenciária.
• “In her shoes” – Esse filme de 2005 com Cameron Diaz foi traduzido por “Em seu lugar” e é exatamente isso. Em português temos a expressão “estar na pele de alguém” que quer dizer exatamente isso, estar no lugar de alguém, mas em inglês falamos de sapatos e não pele, dizemos “to be in someone’s shoes”.
• “When in Rome” – Me lembrei desse filme meio bobinho de 2010 por conta da expressão de onde o título é tirado: “When in Rome do like the Romans”, “Quando em Roma faça como os romanos”. Essa é fácil, mas útil!

English for all

Each group has their say – regardless of their colour, age, sexual orientation, money in the bank or belief. If there is a generous and loving creature, that is me. No wonder my appeal is so irresistible. Millions of people across the globe even say they want to ‘THINK’ in English. I have been part of people’s minds for centuries.

I am so famous that I could easily be named Englishelson Mandela; so powerful that I could be Englishrack Obama; so smart that Englishill Gates would not be a bad name choice; but as you must know, there is no match for me. All these characters came after me and I will be sticking around long after they have gone.

I am also a kind of hero. Yeah, I have saved many from a monolingual type of life. Yet, others are so happy only having me that they do not bother learning other languages. It can be pretty exhaustive. I end up being abused and taken for granted, or totally disregarded. Some also become very demanding and obsessed – they just want me to obey their linguistic delirium. It’s not easy.

She’s got some power!

I am not the confrontational type, you see, which makes me quite vulnerable at times. Thanks to my iron partner – Grammareth Thatcher – I have been spared of more abuse. She makes my life more organised and, at least in writing, she has been quite helpful.

G - as I like to call Grammarreth – is a strong type. She has to deal with variation and changes and still keep some order in whatever happens to me. My hat is off to her. Although she can be bossy and stubborn, a bit of a pig-head, sooner or later she has to bow down to the majority and accept the changes she cannot control. In the end, things fall into place (or go to the space!).

Many learners are very dependent on her, which is quite understandable as teachers have to tell students the ‘norm’. A great bond is created between them and G. She becomes a mum to them. Some never grow up and think that a language is all about knowing G. Others mature quickly and stretch their wings to explore more intimacy with me, not relying too much on G.

Some strict grammarians can make things awkward for G too. They turn learners and teachers alike into fearful creatures. There is no forgiveness – you have it all or you are miles away from writing a brief note in English. ‘Gimme’ a break!

No wonder, you will think, I hang out with two good buddies to keep some sanity. I really enjoy my time with Idiomar Sharif and Slang Lee. They remind me how colourful and attractive I am; how fun and wild too. However, not all of our conversations are healthy. Last time we went out, we gossiped a bit about some new loan words. Not nice, I know.

Free as a bird

It is amazing that although there is no association to regulate me, I am not lost. In fact, I am as free as a bird. In any part of the world, I can be found and everyone can make use of me to communicate. For many, I am a kind of trophy, a powerful tool among others who do not have me. I am telling you, I am the best thing since sliced bread. Oops, I am afraid sliced bread came after me. Oh, how unique am I!

Seriously now, one thing that bothers me extremely is this claim that I am very difficult. Come on! You have to do your part, my dear. I do not remember anyone who did not succeed by doing so. I have millions of cases to tell of speakers around the world who ‘got’ me without leaving their non-English speaking countries.

Many people say that I am complicated too. Have they never heard of Basque? It is the most difficult language to acquire. There is no other language that shares similar traits with it and its structure is very peculiar. However, I also know of people who learned Basque late in life. Not as many as I know of people who have learned English, of course.

I am still the king, you see.

Expose yourself

You can find a bit of many other languages in me. Although I am not a romance language, Latin is all over me. Who can explain this situation? I am like a magnet; it is an attraction that I could never avoid and never tried to.

Come to me, you other languages, and I will make you even more famous by adopting some of your terms and making myself more colourful. It is a win-win situation; with me your destiny is the pop charts!

I am simple, but there are some things I have to get off my chest. I am not to be spoken the same way that I am written! This does not happen with other languages. Why should it happen to me? Why are some teachers and learners so afraid of being exposed to what I really am on a daily basis? Do not be amazed at bad grammar or listening to different accents. They are out there. If you ignore them or make little of them all the time you are being prejudiced. Not everyone uses language the same way. Exposure is essential. I am not encouraging you to use everything either. Do not get me wrong, please! I am only encouraging less paranoia.

Having said that, you should be less tormented with being perfect and afraid of ‘practising me’.
Let your guard off. Let’s just have some fun.

Até aí, simples, mas o que pode complicar é a questão da grafia. Quanto à forma de escrever podemos diferenciar dois tipos de adjetivos compostos: com hífen e como uma palavra só.

Veja alguns exemplos dessa diferença:

• Heart-breaking – de partir o coração
• Tax-free – livre de taxa
• Highly-sensitive – altamente sensível
• Badly-behaved – mal comportado
• Breathtaking – de tirar o fôlego
• Waterproof – à prova d’água
• Widespread – muito difundido
• Handwritten – escrito à mão

Não existe uma regra específica para diferenciar o uso dos adjetivos compostos com hífen ou como uma só palavra, é mais uma questão do uso. Contudo temos uma diferenciação importante que é entre o adjetivo composto com hífen e dois adjetivos adjacentes onde cada um independentemente modifica o substantivo.

Veja os exemplos:

• “Small appliance industry” – uma pequena indústria que produz utensílios. É completamente diferente de “Small-appliance industry” – uma indústria que produz pequenos utensílios.

O mesmo acontece com:

• “We need more qualified workers” – Precisamos de mais (uma quantidade maior de) trabalhadores qualificados. É diferente de “We need more-qualifed workers” – Precisamos de trabalhadores que sejam mais qualificados.

Uma observação importante é que os adjetivos compostos com hífen são usados apenas antes do substantivo, se eles vierem depois do substantivo eles perdem o hífen.

Vejamos:

• I need the up-to-date report.  (Eu preciso do relatório atualizado.)
• This report is not up to date. (Esse relatório não está atualizado.)
• Congratulations for the beautifully-written book. (Parabéns pelo livro belamente escrito.)
• This book was beautifully written. (Esse livro foi belamente escrito.)

Como vocês devem ter notado, “show up” equivale a comparecer, aparecer, ou seja, chegar ou ir a algum lugar onde você havia combinado de encontrar alguém ou fazer alguma coisa. Vamos agora a alguns exemplos de uso.

• It was getting late when she finally showed up. [Estava ficando tarde quando ela finalmente apareceu.
• ]
• I invited him for eight o’clock, but he didn’t show up until nine-thirty. [Eu o convidei para as oito horas, mas ele só compareceu às nove e meia.]
• We were expecting thirty people to come, but half of them never showed up. [Nós estávamos esperando trinta pessoas, mas metade delas nunca vieram.
• ]
• Where is John? I hope he shows up soon. [Onde está o John? Eu espero que ele chegue logo.
• ]
• He showed up late for the meeting. [Ele veio tarde para a reunião.]
• He shows up early for work. [Ele vem cedo para o trabalho.]
• Why didn’t you show up? [Por que você não compareceu?]
• He didn’t show up for class. [Ele não veio para a aula.]

Notem que usamos a preposição “for” com “show up“, “show up for”, quando queremos dizer, por exemplo, comparecer a uma reunião, trabalho, aula etc. “Show up early” ou “show up late” são utilizados para se acrescentar a ideia de “cedo” ou “tarde”. O passado, na afirmativa, é feito com “-ed”: “showed up”.

I’ve thought a lot about this, and even though I’ve really benefited from this, it has always seemed a bit strange to me. To be honest, the more I teach and learn about my strengths and weaknesses, the more this idea seems limited, and in some cases, absurd. It’s really much more complicated than people think.

This article will explore the “native vs non-native” topic from a balanced perspective, and it will attempt to separate fact from fiction. Are native speakers really better, and if so, in what areas and why? What are the advantages of being a non-native when teaching English?

Before anything, let’s clarify one fact.

The most important characteristic of any English teacher

The most important thing is not whether or not the teacher is native speaker or not, but rather if they have know how to teach to the level of their students, if it’s something they are passionate about it, and if they are willing to put the effort in to prepare a good class.

This is common sense.

Some people are naturally good teachers, while others need to work hard. Both types can be successful, but both demand preparation and the intention to help people learn. Having a high or even native proficiency helps a lot, but it’s not a substitute for work ethic and a genuine desire to do a good job.

Some teachers (both native and non-native speakers) have a natural ability and/or strong proficiency but simply don’t know how to teach (or are too lazy to learn). Apart from this, a native teacher is not a magical solution to your English learning problems. If you don’t have a strong desire to learn and dedication to your process, not even the best teacher in the world can help you.

With this said, what are the advantages of both native and non-native English teachers? Let’s start with the underrepresented advantages of being a non-native teacher, then explore what I feel to be the strong points of native speaking teachers, and I’ll tie them together at the end.

Advantages of being a Brazilian/non-native English teacher

The biggest advantage, without a doubt, that non-natives have is that they have consciously learned the language step by step and can guide their students through the labyrinth of confusion that they have already conquered. Native speakers, on the other hand, unconsciously inherit the language from theirs parents and often find themselves struggling to teach certain aspects of grammar or understand what students are going through.

In my case, I’ve learned/been learning languages for the past 8 years (Spanish first, and now Portuguese), and while this gives me immense insight into the language learning process, I still don’t know what it’s really like to learn English. Teachers who have learned the English language through their own blood, sweat and tears have a much greater ability to see through their students’ eyes via their own process.

In addition to understanding the student’s learning of English, a Brazilian English teacher will understand the student’s culture, and be able to cross-reference English through the eyes of Brazilian culture. A good example of this is how Lula is used to teach the “Th” sound in English (Bra-th-ileiros).

Another advantage is that non-native English teachers generally become teachers for reasons that suggest teaching ability and interest in the language. Most Brazilian teachers that I know teach because its something they feel motivated to do, something they enjoy, something they are good at, and something they have received professional training for.

Having a passion for what you teach is a priceless advantage because the teacher’s enthusiasm is totally contagious to not only the student, but other teachers too. I personally know (and learn A TON from) a handful of extremely talented Brazilian English teachers who are complete rock stars at what they do, and although they don’t have the native “brand” on their forehead, or a foreign accent when they speak Portuguese, their students learn from the best, and they learn fast, and they have fun doing it.

On the other hand, most native speaking English teachers I know are not English teachers by choice. They most often do it because they are living in Brazil (because they got married or are involved in other projects not related to teaching English). This is nothing against native speaking English teachers, who may enjoy teaching, and may love living in Brazil. It’s just that it is rarely a “lifelong passion” as it sometimes is for non-natives.

The point is that Brazilian English teachers have many significant advantages that are overlooked in favor of the exaggerated and often inaccurate idea that native speakers are simply far better teachers. That’s not to say that native speakers aren’t naturally better in some areas, but it’s important to have a balanced perspective and give Brazilian English teachers credit where credit is due.

Advantages of being a Native speaking English teacher

While it’s important to recognize the significant talents and advantages of non-native speaking English teachers, there are certain undeniable advantages to being a native speaking English teacher.

First of all, native speakers feel extremely comfortable using the language in a playful and dynamic way that can do a lot to facilitate learning. This takes the pressure off of the grammar and can make the learning experience much more authentic, light and fun.

A native speaker’s repertoire of vocabulary and expressions is going to be so much richer than a non-native can ever be. Of course there are impressive exceptions, but a native’s use of the language, and especially slang and the more dynamic aspects of the language (which are often deeply rooted in the culture) are nearly impossible to emulate by non-native speakers.

The exception though is the .01% of extremely gifted Brazilian learners/ teachers who have learned to use and teach certain aspects of the language that transcend grammar. I’ve only met a few of these teachers ever, but they can emulate a native speaker in not just following the grammar rules, but in breaking them, and then effectively teach it (which few books do). This is mastery that is beyond the scope of the native/ non-native question.

Another advantage about native speakers is that their students generally feel more motivated to speak in English in class. The fact that the teacher is from an English speaking country and not the country of the students generally works as an unconscious trigger for the student to speak the language. This may have nothing to do with the teacher’s proficiency or teaching ability.

The final advantage, which is the most popular, is that a native born teacher will teach or transmit much better pronunciation. This is for sure an advantage, but what a lot of people don’t know is that it’s difficult for beginners and lower intermediate students take advantage of this. In my opinion, upper intermediate and advanced students will benefit a lot more.

With hard work, good strategies, and a little effort, however, anybody can drastically improve their pronunciation without the help of a native teacher, or even by themselves.

Going beyond the Stereotypes

While it’s true that there are clear advantages and disadvantages to both native and non-native speaking English teachers, it’s important to recognize how complicated and full of misconceptions this topic is.

In my opinion, the perceived superiority of native speaking teaching abilities is greatly exaggerated and limited to only certain aspects of teaching, while the advantages of Brazilian teachers, which are many, are completely ignored.

 1 – The way I look

In this topic I’m not going to approach fashion. This is a much deeper element. My appearance is very important, but not only if my clothes are clean or not ripped off. I’m talking about the way my eyes look (if they look confident, tired, bored etc.). A bad-looking teacher, who appears to be defeated by life, tired of teaching, bored with the way students are behaving, will certainly have the same effect on her/his students. So if a teacher looks prepared, healthy, joyful and if the pleasure that the teacher feels by teaching is visible, then the class is likely to be a success.

2 – The way I speak

If I speak in the same tone the whole time, if I speak low and slowly the whole time, if I speak quickly or too loud the whole time, students will sleep or feel very agitated. Thus, if teachers feel what they are teaching, the tone of voice will always change. Obviously, there are new subjects (speak loud) and old subjects (relax the voice a little bit). So, the teacher needs to follow this logic and try to create suspense and also understanding during the class.

3 – The way I lead

It’s not all about classroom leadership, but it’s a good amount of it. Teachers need to be in control. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying students must be scared. I’m saying that the teacher needs to be prepared and know how the class is going to be like. A lost teacher, with no sense of leadership and whatsoever will lead his/her students to failure. A teacher who is always in control is well prepared, has studied the subject to be taught and tries to come up with a scheme that makes things easier for the students to understand.

Among all of the factors above, there are even more subjects we can discuss. But for now, let’s talk about how to measure a good teacher. Is that even possible? Well, technically it isn’t. But practically, we can measure if a teacher is great by the way students come out of the class. If they look bored, tired and uninterested in the subjects previously presented, the teacher is not that good. But if, every time students go home, they think about the next class, wonder what will be the next activities, are curious about doing their homework and are laughing and happy, this is for sure a great teacher.

There are the special cases such as those who are studying because they have to do it. But that is a difficult problem to be solved only by the teacher. Student and teacher must have an honest conversation, talk about their fears, likes, dislikes in the classroom. If the teacher clears things up with the student, probably this student is going to consider changing the course or, finally, he or she is going to work harder and start appreciating the classroom environment.

To sum it up, great teachers love their jobs and do it happily. For them, it is not difficult to wake up early, to be friends with students, to talk about politics (because we DO have an important political role in the classroom) or to be open to talk about different issues with their students.

Agora ficou fácil de entender, não é mesmo? Em inglês, a expressão idiomática equivalente é “it takes two to tango”. Literalmente, “é preciso duas pessoas para se dançar tango’’. Como vocês já devem saber, o “tango” teve origem na Argentina e a dança normalmente é feita por um casal. Porém, a expressão em destaque não se aplica apenas a casais (homem e mulher), mas a situações diversas envolvendo duas pessoas em conflito.

Vamos agora aos exemplos de uso para que tudo fique mais claro e vocês aprendam a utilizar mais esta idiom muito interessante. Confiram a seguir:

• She may want to argue, but it takes two to tango and I won’t stoop to her level. [Ela pode querer discutir, mas quando um não quer, dois não brigam e eu não vou me rebaixar ao nível dela.]
• Remember: it takes two to tango. [Lembre-se: quando um não quer, dois não brigam.]
• But as Mom always said, “It takes two to tango.” [Mas como a mamãe sempre dizia, "quando um não quer, dois não brigam."]
• It takes two to tango. Both are equally to blame. [Quando um não quer, dois não brigam. Os dois são igualmente culpados.]

Outra expressão usada na mesma situação é “it takes two to make a quarrel.” Porém, confesso que a tenho visto muito menos do que “it takes two to tango“. Vamos ao exemplo de uso:

Jane: I think Anna ought to apologize for arguing with me. [Jane: Eu acho que a Anna deveria se desculpar por discutir comigo.]
Mother: It takes two to make a quarrel, dear. Maybe you ought to apologize to her. [Mãe: Quando um não quer, dois não brigam, querida. Talvez você deva se desculpar com ela.]

Bom, para começar, se quiser dizer “foto” ou “fotografia” em inglês, você pode usar “picture” ou “photo”. De uma forma geral, “picture” é mais comum em linguagem coloquial e pode ainda ser abreviado para “pic”, que no plural ficaria “pics”(fotos). “Take a picture” ou “take a photo” podem ser traduzidos como “tirar uma foto” ou “tirar uma fotografia”. A “máquina fotográfica” ou “câmera fotográfica” em inglês é chamada de “camera”. Se você não gosta que tirem fotografias de você, então, a expressão a ser usada é “camera-shy”. Para dizer “fotogênico”, basta usar “photogenic”. O “álbum de fotos” pode ser um “photo album”. O “photographer” é obviamente o fotógrafo, e “photo session” equivale a sessão de fotos. Bom, vamos agora a alguns exemplos de uso.

• This is the photo of my friend. [Esta é a foto do meu amigo.]
• The photographer takes pictures of his family. [O fotógrafo tira fotos da família dele.]
• Could you take a picture of me? [Você poderia tirar uma foto minha?]
• They took photos with cell phone cameras. [Eles tiraram fotos com câmeras de celular.]
• Some people say he was camera-shy. [Algumas pessoas dizem que ele não gostava de tirar foto.]
• I think Mary is very photogenic. [Eu acho a Mary muito fotogênica.]
• Take a look at this photo album. [Dê uma olhada neste álbum de fotos.]
• Pics on Facebook. [Fotos no Facebook.]
• Clients initially book an appointment for the photo session. [Os clientes inicialmente agendam um horário para a sessão de fotos.]

Um detalhe importante de que devemos nos lembrar é que “take a picture” ou “take a photo” é utilizado quando você mesmo tira fotos de outras pessoas ou coisas; se quiser dizer que alguém tira fotos de você, que você é fotografado, as expressões a serem usadas são: “have my picture taken” ou “have my photo taken”.

Então, recapitulando: ao usar “take a picture” ou “take a photo”, você vai lá e tira a foto de alguém; quando utilizar “have my picture taken” ou “have my photo taken” é porque alguém tirou a foto de você. O curioso é que no português não há esta diferença – usamos a expressão “tirar foto” para os dois casos, o que ajuda a distinguir é o contexto. Preste atenção!

• He went there to have his picture taken for his passport. [Ele foi lá tirar uma foto para o passaporte - alguém tirou a foto dele.]
• Can I have my photo taken with you? [Eu posso tirar uma foto com você? - alguém vai tirar uma foto minha e sua juntos.]

É preciso dizer ainda que os termos “shoot” e “shot” podem estar relacionados a “fotos”. “Shoot” pode ser utilizado para se dizer “tirar fotos” e “sessão de fotos“, que também pode ser “photo shoot“. Já o termo “shot“, que é informal, significa “foto” em inglês neste contexto. Vamos aos exemplos.

• Harold took a great shot of the dogs playing together. [Harold tirou uma ótima foto dos cães brincando juntos.]
• Nana Gouvea leans against a fallen tree in a photo shoot that has been widely condemned. [Nana Gouvea se inclina em direção a uma árvore caída em uma sessão de fotos que foi amplamente condenada.]

Bom, pessoal, acho que é isso. Por hoje é só. Bons estudos e até a próxima.

Creio que todos os leitores já sabem que o auxiliar “do” é quase sempre usado em frases negativas e interrogativas. Na negativa ele vem como “don’t” + forma base do verbo (infinitivo sem to) para I, you, we e they e como “doesn’t” + forma base do verbo para he, she e it.

Na interrogativa, ele vem como o próprio “do” mesmo + forma base do verbo para I, you, we e they e como “does” + forma base do verbo para he, she e it. Até aí creio que muitos não tenham dúvidas. Mas fica a pergunta de todos: E quanto ao uso do “do” em frases afirmativas? É esta a intenção do artigo de hoje.

O uso do do nas frases afirmativas se dá na seguinte estrutura:

• Sujeito + do + verbo na forma base

Quando o sujeito se tratar dos pronomes I, you, we e they ou de pessoas equivalentes a eles e,

• Sujeito + does + verbo na forma base

Quando o sujeito se tratar dos pronomes he, she e it ou de pessoas equivalentes a eles. Mas para que usar este auxiliar? Qual é o objetivo dele nas frases afirmativas? Simplesmente para dar ênfase e intensidade ao que é dito. Exemplo:

• I do love you. (Eu te amo muito)
• Eliana does like studying. (Eliana realmente gosta de estudar.) – Observação – Não se esqueça de cortar o S do verbo principal quando usar o auxiliar does na afirmativa.

Nos dois exemplos acima nota-se que o uso de do e does serviu para intensificar o que foi dito. No primeiro exemplo nota-se que o falante diz que realmente ama muito a pessoa e que usou o “I do love you” em vez de “I love you” porque ele quer dar ênfase a isso, e no segundo exemplo diz que a Eliana também gosta muito de estudar, está dando uma ênfase pra isso, por isso usou-se “Eliana does like studying” em vez de “Eliana likes studying“.

Importante: não se pode usar o “do” e nem o “does” quando o verbo principal for o verbo to be.

Exemplo:

“She do is beautiful.” – Está incorreto neste caso. Se você deseja dizer “Eu realmente sou bonito” ou então “Eu sou muito bonito”, deverá procurar outro intensificador neste caso que não o do. E é por um motivo bem simples: o verbo to be já é seu próprio auxiliar, diferentemente dos outros verbos, como, por exemplo, os verbos like, have e go, entre outros, precisam do auxiliar do, diferentemente do verbo to be.

Vale lembrar também que se pode usar o did em frases afirmativas para expressar as mesmas coisas explicadas até agora, só que no passado. A estrutura fica:

• Sujeito + did + verbo na forma base

Exemplos:

“I did like you, but I don’t like you anymore.” (Eu realmente te amava, mas não te amo mais.)

Lembre-se também de eliminar o ED (ou qualquer outra terminação do Simple Past na afirmativa, mesmo que irregular) quando for usar o did. Também não se pode usar o did com o verbo to be no passado (was e were).

“I do was smart.” – Errado. Se quiser intensificar, procure usar palavras do tipo “I really was smart.“, “I was very smart.“, entre outras.

Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?

I will never forget the day I ran into Janine… It was an autumn day on the stunning Spanish island Gran Canaria, just off the coast of Africa, and we were having dinner with some other travelers. Her story stood out from the others… Not only had she seen more countries than anybody else… she had also done it for free… and made money in the process!

So what’s this great opportunity? Become a cocaine smuggler? Money launderer? Maybe a professional hitman?

Nope… the answer is both totally ethical and completely legal, and just about anyone can do it… in fact, it is not only one of the most promising ways to travel the world, but also one of the EASIEST ones.

“So what are you talking about Frank? Stop teasing already and tell me the secret!”

Well, I’ve actually already told you… it was buried in one of my previous articles, I just haven’t talked about it at great length yet. And the best way to understand what I mean is a quote by Zig Ziglar: “You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want”. I really believe in this quote. In other words… one of the best ways to travel the world is by helping other people to travel the world.

Still too cryptic?

I’m talking about the cruise ship industry, of course! 19 million people escape from their daily routine on an ocean liner every year… and if you help them make their dreams come true, your own dreams will come true as an automatic byproduct.

The surprising fact is… it’s actually very easy to find a job on a cruise ship, because most people don’t want to work on the high seas for a life time. For most, this is seasonal work… they want to have an adventure for a couple of months, and then get back to the main land. That means that turnover in staff is high… so cruise companies are constantly looking for personnel.

But how can you get a hold of one of these dream jobs?

There are two ways, really. You could either get hired by the cruise line directly, or you could go through an agency… there are a ton of companies out there whose business is recruiting staff for the ocean liners. If you’re serious about this idea, I recommend you do both… I did.

I looked up all the cruise lines, AND all the cruise job agencies in online directory (Google is your friend, and so is Wikipedia). Next, I made a list of the biggest ones, because I didn’t want to be stuck cruising back and forth between two islands… I wanted to travel wide and far!

And third, I eliminated all cruise lines that went to cold countries. I know some people dream of a cruise to Alaska or the Antarctica, so that’s just my personal preference. There are stunning landscapes to be explored even in the Scandinavian fjords, whereas I have acquired more of a taste for the tropics… But that’s all up to you.

Next, pick a profession! What would you like to do on board of the ship? Do you want to be an entertainer, a magician, a dancer, or a singer? Do you want to be a cruise director, tour guide, casino croupier or librarian?

All of those jobs are great options… they all pay pretty well and leave you plenty of free time to explore every harbor your ship anchors for the night. Jobs like chamber maid, waiter, cook and engineer are a different matter, however… they tend to be extremely tough, with 13 hours of work per day, for 30 days a month.

The next thing to consider is what flag you’d like to sail under. The good news is that all ships sail, by definition, out on the open seas, and that means you won’t need any special work visa… Neptune is a lot more forgiving than the American TSA! It also means that in many cases, your income will be tax-free… check with your attorney for details.

Finally, rumor has it that American cruise lines often offer better hours and higher compensations than Brazilian ones… so that’s something to keep in mind as well. The two largest cruise lines in the world are Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean (I worked for the former for a while)… those two companies always one-up each other, as each year one of them will build “the biggest cruise ship in the world”, just to watch the other one build an even bigger one the year after.

Don’t expect to get hired over night… and don’t just apply to one cruise line. In my case, I wanted to work as a pianist on board, so I recorded a demo and sent it to about fifty different agencies and companies. Within a few weeks, I received the first couple of offers, and within a couple of months, I received the first offer I could not refuse.

I ended up taking a plane to San Francisco, where I was to board the Sun Princess as atrium pianist and see ALL the great islands of the Pacific Ocean. The ship took me to Hawaii, Bora Bora, Tahiti, French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Fiji, Samoa, New Zealand, Australia and many other (expensive, may I add) tropical paradise islands… for free!

I sometimes say how traveling is not all beauty and grace, and there are hard times, for sure… There are visa hassles and insurance providers that don’t pay up, and just in general life on the road isn’t ALWAYS a dream. Contudo, vale a aproximação sim, pois muitas palavras em inglês, assim como em português, têm radicais gregos e latinos, o que ajuda bastante. Você vai ver que não é nem necessário colocar a tradução. Antes, vamos entender o que é o radical de uma palavra.

O radical é a parte da palavra que tem significado, que exprime a ideia geral da palavra e não apresenta variação. Por exemplo, as palavras ANTHROPOLOGY, MISANTHROPE e PHILANTHROPY têm em comum o radical ANTHROP, que significa MAN (homem).
