The House of Representatives approved the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009—or Waxman-Markey bill— aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and the Kerry-Boxer climate bill was recently introduced in the U.S. Senate.

Like the House bill, the Senate’s Kerry-Boxer bill could have a profound impact on Americans’ everyday lives. Simply stated, the legislation would likely raise energy costs, kill jobs and will not deliver the environmental benefits promised.

Given the economic challenges we face, the last thing we need is to create a climate for sky-high energy costs. Jobs and the health of the American economy depend on a more balanced approach.

Take action and let your voice be heard. Tell Congress to produce a bill that does not harm the economy and includes a more balanced approach to transportation fuels and natural gas.

It is critical that your Senators hear from you in opposition to Waxman-Markey like legislation.

The oil and natural gas industry remains committed to working with Congress to produce climate change legislation, but is concerned about the added expense to American consumers, businesses and the nation’s economy.

The bills could saddle drivers with dramatically higher fuel costs. The EIA forecasts that the Waxman-Markey climate bill could increase gasoline prices to over $5 a gallon by 2030.

And a new a report shows that the Waxman-Markey climate bill amounts to a $3.6 trillion energy tax on transportation fuels. The study shows that from 2010 to 2050 motorists, workers and businesses would pay $2.0 trillion more for gasoline; truckers, farmers and businesses would pay $1.3 trillion more for diesel fuel; and airline passengers would be charged $330 billion more to pay for jet fuel.

At a time when we can least afford it, this legislation can have the effect of driving up energy costs, creating a competitive disadvantage for American businesses, and imperiling thousands—if not millions—of jobs.

According to numerous studies of Waxman-Markey, including an analysis by the government’s own EIA, the bill would result in over 2 million jobs lost by 2030. The oil and natural gas industry directly and indirectly supports 9.2 million American jobs, and these jobs and their economic productivity should not be jeopardized.

A majority of Americans support access to oil and natural gas resources, but a pattern seems to be emerging when it comes to developing these resources – delay. It is time to start listening to the wisdom of the American people and create energy policy that would allow increased access to our own resources and generate nearly 160,000 new, well-paying jobs, $1.7 trillion in revenues to federal, state and local governments and greater energy security.

U.S. access to energy supplies from Canada—our number one supplier—is also critical.

Higher industry taxes would send ripples throughout the economy, discouraging business expansion, investment and job creation. They will also lead to higher costs for consumers—taking money away from American households and families.

Take action and let your voice be heard. Tell the administration and Congress that American families and businesses can not afford higher taxes.

It is critical that both the administration and members of Congress hear from you in opposition to higher taxes on U.S. energy companies.

Imposing additional taxes on America's oil and natural gas companies will not lower energy costs and will make us more reliant on others for our energy supplies.

Historically, higher taxes have resulted in less domestic energy because taxes make it more expensive to expand or initiate new exploration and development programs. In today’s economy, that could stifle recovery and make Americans more dependent on other countries for our energy supplies.

A majority of Americans support domestic access, and the oil and natural gas industry should be encouraged to develop our nation’s vast energy resources. This would improve America’s energy security, create jobs and provide federal, state and local governments with more than $1.7 trillion in new revenues.

Increasing access to oil and natural gas resources could generate nearly 160,000 new, well-paying jobs, $1.7 trillion in revenues to federal, state and local governments and greater energy security. And according to a PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) study, the U.S. oil and natural gas industry already supports 9.2 million American jobs and contributes more than $1 trillion to the national economy, or 7.5 percent GDP.

But it’s not just domestic oil and gas that will provide the jobs and energy our nation needs. Canada, our friendly neighbor to the north and top supplier of oil, will continue to play a vital role as we seek greater energy and economic security.

According to a recent CERI study, the economic impact oil Canadian oil sands development is expected to lead to 342,000 U.S. jobs between 2011 and 2015, and an estimated $34 billion to the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP)in 2015 and $42.2 billion in 2025.

Take action and let your voice be heard. Tell the administration and Congress to act now and put energy to work for Americans.

How much oil and natural gas is actually out there? How much of it is off limits?

According to federal government data, the U.S. has enough oil and natural gas to fuel more than 65 million cars for 60 years and enough natural gas to heat 60 million homes for 160 years. In fact, the U.S. government estimates that there are 30 billion barrels of undiscovered technically recoverable oil on federal lands currently closed to development.

And our nation’s number one supplier—Canada—has abundant oil reserves, second only to Saudi Arabia using current technological assessments. According to the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, oil sands now account for more than half of western Canada’s total oil production. By 2025, production from Canadian oil sands is expected to rise from about 1.3 million barrels per day to about 3.3 million barrels per day.
