With their mission to educate all students, these schools will become key sites for interventions to overcome the various challenges of disability and bio-distress and their impacts on learning.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;ul&gt; &lt;li&gt;How can experimenting and designing for  special learners create innovations for all?  &lt;/li&gt; &lt;li&gt;How can school communities become centers for protection and rejuvenation in a bio-distressed world? &lt;/li&gt; &lt;/ul&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;More on This Topic&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; In the next decade, &lt;strong&gt;the body will be at the center of many debates&lt;/strong&gt; regarding human performance, bio-distress, environmental health, and their impact on learning.  We will see more experimentation focused on adapting to the threats of bio-distress, but also on expanding our conceptions of cognition, human performance, and standards of normalcy.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Advances in neuroscience&lt;/strong&gt; are revealing new understanding of the brain, its plasticity (i.e., its ability to change) and its responsiveness to the environment.  This is opening up a spectrum of cognitive performance, revealing the strengths of different cognitive abilities rather than their weaknesses.  &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; &lt;strong&gt;Emerging notions of neuro-diversity and physical  disability &lt;/strong&gt; will challenge standards of what is "normal" and will spark innovations that help mainstream populations. &lt;a href="/signal/Oscar-Pistorius.aspx"&gt;Oscar Pistorius&lt;/a&gt;, an elite athlete with two prosthetic legs called Cheetah Flexfeet, is demonstrating that physical enhancement can create better than normal performance. As we understand more about neuro-diversity, innovations in teaching and learning that are targeted for  disabled marginal populations may provide insight and benefit for mainstream learners. The voluntary change in advice to parents comes less than a week after federal health officials said they also saw little evidence that the drugs work. Government officials were afraid that taking the medicines off store shelves might prompt parents to give their children adult medicines. The drug makers said they will also add a warning that parents should not give antihistamines to children to make them sleepy. These are allergy-relief medications often found in medicines that combine several ingredients to treat a variety of symptoms. The new measures "reflect industry's overall commitment to the continued safe and appropriate use of children's oral OTC cough and cold medicines," Linda Suydam, president of the Consumer Healthcare Products Association, said on behalf of the companies. Problems with OTC cough and cold medicines send over 7,000 children to hospital emergency rooms each year, with hives, drowsiness, or unsteady walking. Many kids overdose on medicines when their parents aren't looking. Since a majority of the problems involve 2- to 3-year-olds, the industry's new instructions, if followed by parents, should help. Pediatricians still support recalling the medicines for children under 6, and the Food and Drug Administration is studying their effectiveness for children under 12. But federal health officials say it could take them a year or more to make a final decision and order changes. LeSieur tried to find online tools that could guide autistic kids around the web, but he couldn't find anything satisfactory. So he had one built, named it the  Zac Browser for Autistic Children in honor of his grandson, and made it available to anyone free of charge. Zac Browser presents a hand-picked slate of choices from free, public web sites, with an emphasis on educational games, music, videos, and visually entertaining images, such as a virtual aquarium. LeSieur's browser essentially takes over the computer and reduces the controls available for children such as Zackary, who may find too many choices overwhelming. Zac Browser disables extraneous keyboard buttons such as "Print Screen" and turns off the right button on the mouse. Zac Browser eliminates commands most children don't need anyway, and it reduces the chance an autistic child will lose confidence after making a counterproductive click. Children using the Zac Browser select activities by clicking on larger-than-normal icons, like a soccer ball for games and a stack of books for "stories." Malaria kills nearly three million people worldwide every year, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. "This is one of those high-tech, high risk innovations that would fundamentally change the struggle between humans and mosquitoes.
